He is arguably the most important figure in the development of modern automatic and semi-automatic firearms and is credited with 128 gun patents[3]. He made his first firearm at age 13 in his father's gun shop, and was awarded his first patent on October 7, 1879 at the age of 24.[1] Browning influenced nearly all categories of firearms design. He invented or made significant improvements to single-shot rifles, lever-action rifles, and slide-action firearms. His most significant contributions were in the area of autoloading firearms. He developed the first reliable and compact autoloading pistols by inventing the telescoping bolt, integrating the bolt and barrel shroud into what is known as the slide. Browning's telescoping bolt design is now found on nearly every modern semi-automatic pistol, as well as several modern fully automatic weapons. He also developed the first gas-operated machine gun, the Colt-Browning Model 1895—a system that surpassed mechanical recoil operation to become the standard for most high-power self-loading firearm designs worldwide. Browning's most successful designs include the M1911 pistol, the Browning .50 caliber machine gun, the Browning Automatic Rifle, and a ground-breaking semi-automatic shotgun, the Browning Auto-5. These arms are nearly identical today to those assembled by Browning in the 1920s, with only minor changes in detail and cosmetics. He was unenthusiastic about the idea, as were Mattel's directors. During a trip to Europe in 1956 with her children Barbara and Kenneth, Ruth Handler came across German toy doll called Bild Lilli. The adult-figured doll was exactly what Handler had in mind, so she purchased three of them. She gave one to her daughter and took the others back to Mattel. The Lilli doll was based on a popular character appearing in a comic strip drawn by Reinhard Beuthin for the newspaper Die Bild-Zeitung. Lilli was a working girl who knew what she wanted and was not above using men to get it. The Lilli doll was first sold in Germany in 1955, and although it was initially sold to adults, it became popular with children who enjoyed dressing her up in outfits that were available separately. Upon her return to the United States, Handler reworked the design of the doll (with help from engineer Jack Ryan) and the doll was given a new name, Barbie, after Handler's daughter Barbara. The doll made its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York on March 9, 1959. This date is also used as Barbie's official birthday. Tagged! Tagged by my best friend Carlina :] These photos were taken when i was in the 8th grade. 1. I'm a 17-year-old Texas Native. 2. My first language was Spanish. 3. I've been dancing since I was 1 1/2 years old. Since then I have had a series of injuries including: a pinched nerve in my back, shin splints, pulled muscles, severe knee popping, severe shoulder popping, and so forth. Every day I wake up, my feet ache to the point of wincing at the slightest pressure. 4.I have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). I take medication for it every day. Some side-effects that effect me are anxiety, depression, panic-attacks, and hunger issues. 5. I have a brother and a half-brother who i regard completely as just my brother. 6. I have never dyed my hair in my life even though I've sort of wanted to. I'm way too afraid of losing my natural color. I could never dye it back, since it's so unique. 7. My boyfriend and I will have been dating for three years on January 11, 2009. I had asked him out first (he let me down gently), and then he asked me after seeing me at school the next day. I've liked him since I've seen him even though he made fun of me. Apparently little boys do pick on you when they like you :P 8. I've been made fun of all of my school life until 9th grade. People called me Beaver, because of my teeth, and made fun of my face and glasses. Now people don't waste their time making fun of me because they know I simply don't give a crap what they think because they're complete and total idiots who will never go far in life unless it involves makeup hair products and cheating. 9. If my schedule isn't insanely busy, i go insane. I need stress. I need a lot of things in my life. The Toy This was shot in a class setting, and the model was a beginner as well, but clearly a natural. I was pretty proud of the idea to give Eva something to play with. Not that it was completely original, but nobody else in the classroom thought of it, and everybody got good shots from it. Eva did her own makeup and hair. Overall, a great model. And - get this - she is a good photographer in her own right. She said she wanted to explore the other side of the business, so she branched our into modeling. The light was set up by the instructor, so I cannot take credit for it, and clearly it's a major component of the finished product. I take credit for giving the model a prop, posing her, picking the best shot out of a series, and post-processing. Tagged (just now figured that out) I finally figured out why people were adding me to their pictures. Duh! Its means I was tagged! At first I was like "WTF? I'm not in this picture..." yeah I'm a bright one.... I have a one and a half inch line of perfectly round skin blots that looks just like a little brown caterpillar, dead center of my belly (I was born with it.) When I was little I use to draw wings on either side of it with markers or my mom’s makeup pencils and call it “my butterfly.” I have thought and thought about getting it removed, but each time I make the appointment I cancel shortly after, because I start getting sad at the thought of not having it because I’ve had it all my life and its kinda like my trademark. Yeah…leave it to me to get sentimental about skin blots… :P 2. I’m not sure when, but somewhere down the line I developed the habit of eating pancakes with my fingers. I rip the pancakes in little pieces then dip it in syrup on the side, like a finger food. I love pancakes, but never order them in public because having to practice manners and eat them the proper way is almost physically painful for me. 3. My SL name is actually my RL nickname and am called by it more than my real name. My dad gave me the nickname Ray, as a short for my name when I was little because he had really wanted a boy. 4. When I was in the 6th grade my teacher gave the class a writing assignment, to write a scary story but old school kinda scary, not just chalked with a bunch of blood and gore. She was trying to give us an example on how to be scary without getting gory by describing this scene from an old movie where two women that are friends are sharing a bed while staying at a haunted house and the lights are off. One of the women suddenly says in the darkness “Stop gripping my hand so hard, you’re hurting me! Let go!” The other women then replies “What are you talking about? I’m not touching you.” That srsly freaked me out so bad, to this day I still have to sleep with my hands tucked into my blankets, tucked under my chin, or buried behind my pillow. I cannot sleep with them uncovered, I get freaked out. Yeah…I’m a tardface :P 5. I enjoy sleeping in my husband’s PJ bottoms more than my own, even though mine are way cuter. Hehehe 6. My new favorite show is Rue Paul’s Drag Race. I have a fascination with drag queens I can’t really explain…their just so glamorous and diva-ish…I love em’! Plus, its just pure fun to see a man’s interpretation of what a glamorous woman should look like. 7. I absolutely HATE HATE HAAAAAAAAAAAATE the feel of Styrofoam against my skin and/or the sound of it rubbing against itself. It drives me up such a wall that my whole body will actually involuntarily shudder. Packing peanuts are fine, but if a box is packed with block Styrofoam I actually have to have someone else open it for me. I have no clue why. 8. I’m in my late 20’s but actually still have a hard time not giggling if someone says the word “penis” or “vagina.” I have no problem with the word cock or pussy but for some reason the more formal versions of those words give me the giggles. Yeah, go figure…. :P The morning after Anyone wanna wake up with me tomorrow morning? I woke up today slightly headached and hungover after yesterday's party, and just thought I looked hilarious. This really was literally after being up for 3 minutes. (I couldn't be bothered to remove my makeup last night. The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle LIFE AND TIMES OF VIVIENNE VYLE:SSN1 - DVD Movie The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle is one of British TV's most savage, and most magnificent, TV series. In the way that Ricky Gervais' The Office skewers the corporate life, Vivienne Vyle takes on daytime TV, the sleazification of talk shows, and the insatiable drive for those with fame for more of the same. Yet Vivienne Vyle is far darker than its counterparts--the humor is black and bleak, the satire biting yet riveting. The series is a splendid showcase for the many talents of star Jennifer Saunders, whose Absolutely Fabulous airhead persona only slightly informs the character of the back-biting, driven, yet deeply emotionally needy talk show host Vivienne Vyle. It's a performance TV fans won't soon forget. Vyle is the host of a cheesy British talk show (the name "Vyle" can't be a coincidence), and Saunders' character is a cross between Jerry Springer and Sally Jessy Raphael--taunting guests about their children's paternity, their spouses' fidelity, and worse. "How does it feel to be a worm? Because that's what you are, you know," she goads one hapless guy, with a shaved head except for five stalactites of bangs across his dim forehead. As with Vivienne Vyle's American counterparts, fisticuffs often break out, though the British audience, while eating up the spectacle, is oddly and politely quiet. The worse the antics of the guests, the more the ratings of Vyle's show climb. And Saunders is a wonder at portraying, almost sympathetically, the ego-driven force behind the sleaze. Her marriage may be one simply of convenience, and as she recovers from a brutal beating she received on one show, all she can plaintively think about is having a baby. Saunders' Vivienne may be a media monster, but she has dark yearnings like the rest of us. Also terrific is Miranda Richardson, who plays the Vivienne Vyle show's manic, ditzy producer, Helena. As with Saunders, Richardson gives a top-notch performance that's not always easy to watch. The set features six 30-minute episodes, which though biting, is so well written, directed and acted that it is truly compulsively watchable. --A.T. Owen has super sensitive skin, and often has mild bouts with eczema. It good, because it never ever affects him, but as a mother I always worry a bit. Lauren Before Makeover Lauren's another beautiful ballerina friend of mine. Because of the performances, she has to wear makeup quite often. Since she has really sensitive and very dry skin that breaks out easily, it's always a challenge to find makeup that works for her. Day 8 - Before & After A friend of mine gave me a picture today which has inspired me. It starts off with: "WARNING!!! Things NOT to say to someone with a disabling chronic condition." It hit home. 15 reasons it gives. This is the first. "But you don't look sick". Ok, let me tell you something. Look up. Yes, that's me. Before, and After. The first picture was taken this morning, BEFORE my meds kicked in. So I was in considerable pain, and I didn't care that I took a snapshot that shows my face breaking out, redness, the awful bags under my eyes and my seemingly endless pout I have. Not intentional. Don't tell me I don't look sick. I don't sleep well. Toss and turn. The meds help me manage the pain, not the spasm- yet. But here we go... This afternoon, when I finally found the energy to do... The right photo. Makeup. A swipe of mineral foundation here, some concealer there... Blend it in, ok skin's an even tone. Add some more concealer to under eyes- try to blend the awful blue and black half moons that seem permanently camped out there. Fail. Well, not totally.... You can't see them AS bad. Swipe some color onto my lids. In an attempt to make myself feel better, I try different combinations. This happened to be Mandarin and Cranberry, and a pretty white shimmer on my brow bone. Color in my brows, I almost forgot... Then grab the black eyeliner. Go over it with Fig to tone down the black... Mascara, and another sweep of the brush to put more foundation on my skin. Evens it out even more- great stuff. A healthy swipe of bronzer (what a lifesaver...) mascara, and lip gloss. There you have it. I don't look sick anymore. I don't look rundown. I don't look tired. Exhausted. In chronic pain. In any pain. The color distracts and draws attention to my eyes. They, however, still reveal my story. Don't tell me I don't look sick. The consequences... Will be creative. flambeau mine rock sample 1 these rocks were not collected by me. for my geology class this semester we are required to do a term research project. we had lots of different options of things that we could do. i choose (well technically the teacher said that it would be a good project) to use x-ray analysis and microscopic petrology to analize the mineral makeup of three different samples gathered at the old flambeau mine (wisconsin). spent the morning working on that... hopefully it will work....
