Clusters of people admire the furniture displayed in the windows of the storefront as patrons enter the building. The store is heavily adorned with signage and an American flag. Men, women, and children, including a man pushing a handcart, walk on the bustling sidewalk. A woman with a girl, and a delivery boy, cross the street near the "No. 21 Exchange & Richmond" streetcar, a "H. Adolph" delivery wagon, and another laborer pushing a handcart. The McDonald's and the Holiday Inn (in back) are quite excellent Playskool products (the "blockhead" people). In the foreground is a Brunswick bowling alley (Child Guidance was the maker, a commenter below tells me). The supermarket at left is a cheapo brand -- unfortunately, none of the biggies made a supermarket. Fisher-Price Printer's Kit Just found this Fisher-Price Art & Crafts Printer's Kit on eBay. No More Aerosol I used to do this job with spray cans for money even, but I couldn't face the thought of all those chemicals going into the air. So I rolled the job. The first coat looks awful, but the trick is not to fuss over it and do it quickly, but not sloppy. The second coat will do the job. I got a nice textured finish and used the whole quart. Spray finishes scratch off easily. Hopefully this will be better even though it is latex and not oil based. 22April2009 Hot and Steamy should have put my hair up before I walked out the door today, it is crazy hot and humid. Todays outing: get gas for the car, drop off things at goodwill, visit auntie Lorna at work and pick up more spray paint for patio furniture. kyle and the last days of the beach house 1 when i first rented the land for my beach house i figured i’d plop down a house and maybe stay a month or two. it’s a pricey plot, but well worth it, 4096 sq. meters, on the corner of an island with a delightful build (more than just an island split into rectangles), and very well managed. what really grabbed me though, was the tiny island i have just off the my beach. the whole place was adorable! the house i had bought for it was very open, and i tried to go for a consistent design; an interior with modern furniture, and a black/white color scheme with red accents, contrasting with a very dense, closed in jungle just outside the house walls. this picture shows me looking down into the living room, with the wide curved windows above me, looking out to the sky, and to my left, some of modern furniture, and then a bay window looking onto the wooden dock that extends just over the water’s edge. at the very right of the picture you can see some of the white sand from that tiny island. originally i had many more extra palm trees and jungle plants around the house, although i pulled out a lot of those to free prims for my spaceship, HDF Glissette, that i set up at 2 km. between the house, the beach, the tiny island and my spaceship, i have had many, many delightful adventures. alas, my days on the beach are numbered. i’m going to leave when my current rent ends in early november. i have been on this plot for 18 months. i have very serious mixed feelings about moving, although i am also very much looking forward to my new home, in a new spaceship. i’ve been in sl for over 3 years now, and a substantial chunk of that has been in this place. i still have about a week left, unless someone wants to give me 10,000 lindens :) outfit: Innocentia Gown for 18th Century Versailles by Fleur de Lys and Dojo Couture (Sanders Beaumont) hair: Juliette, by Sirena (Natalia Zelmanov) Beach House Kids Room A custom desk with a Wave-shaped backboard is the centerpiece for a kid-friendly beach house guest room. The Palais Theatre, St Kilda was constructed in 1927 as the Palais Pictures, to a design by prominent Sydney-based theatre and cinema architect, Henry E. White. It was built on leased Crown land for the American entrepreneurs, Herman, Harold and Leon Phillips, who had previously established Luna Park (1912) and the Palais de Danse (1913) in St Kilda. The Palais Pictures building replaced an earlier Palais Pictures which was built c1920 and destroyed by fire in 1926. It was designed to seat up to 3000 patrons and incorporated generous backstage facilities and a broad proscenium. Like its predecessor, the form of the new Palais Pictures conformed to that of the adjacent Palais de Danse, with the adoption of a curved, aircraft hangar-type structure. The Palais Theatre is a free-standing, rendered, concrete encased steel frame building, with brick infill walls. The roof is a two level, shallow-curved corrugated iron roof, supported on steel trusses. Extensive use was made of steel framing, with the dress circle cantilevered from a steel frame, to minimise the number of columns required in the auditorium. The highly visible side and rear facades of the free-standing building have minimal decoration, placing emphasis on the front facade. Conceived as a signboard, the central section of this main facade incorporates a large descriptive sign on a curved, rendered parapet. Domed towers flank the facade in a similar manner to the Luna Park entrance and the Palais de Danse facade. Wanting to convey a sense of modernity, Henry White stated that he adopted no particular style in the design of the Palais Pictures building. The interior, described at times as Spanish, French and Oriental, includes a large, double-height entrance foyer with giant order columns, and two sweeping staircases to the dress circle foyer above. Walls are decorated with a disc-like surface pattern and columns have a scagliola finish. Two open wells in the upper foyer, a rectangular one over the lower foyer and an elliptical one over the back stalls, are an important aspect of the design. The internal early/original decorative scheme of the Palais Theatre, designed mainly by Melbourne firm A.E. Higgins, is substantially intact. The interior of the Palais Theatre is adorned by a variety of lighting, including candelabras, wall lamps and illuminated glazed panels. The lighting is either part of the A.E. Higgins decorative scheme or is part of a suite of light fittings manufactured for the Palais Theatre by Victoria's pre-eminent manufacturer of lighting and hardware, William Bedford Pty Ltd. Some of the William Bedford light fittings are now located off-site. A switch/power board located in the dome originally controlled the lighting in the theatre. In addition to the light fittings, the building retains many other carefully resolved original or early design features including: . Illuminated glass directional signs to the ladies and gentlemen's cloakrooms; . Illuminated exit signs; . Tip-up theatre seating, associated foot warmers and attendant piping; . In 1973 the outdoor promenade to the upper foyer was infilled across the front facade, significantly altering the building's external appearance. The Bedford lights are significant to the cultural heritage significance of the place and in their own right. Certain items within the building contribute to the heritage significance of the place but do not warrant registration in their own right. 100 Ways of a Wanderluster For those of you disinclined to reading novels at the present time, this is a self-portrait at Cascade Creek in Yosemite--one of the most beautiful waterfalls I've ever seen. A whole bunch of yellow-gold creeks come together and tumble over the mountain. Absolutely unbelievably beautiful. Here are 100 factoids: 1. I am most at peace when outside. Perhaps I’m horribly spoiled by living in Oregon, surrounded by some of the most beautiful places in the world. The only thing we don’t have here is San Francisco. 2. 4:00am is probably my favorite time of day. I usually wake up, look at the clock, realize I still have a few hours to sleep, roll over, get extremely comfy, and drift back to sleep. It’s great. It’s an odd sense of freedom. 3. I love to bake. It’s like a full-on recreational sport for me, involving tons of sticky, disgusting dishes piled everywhere. My favorite thing to bake is cinnamon rolls, which sometimes turn out perfect, and sometimes turn out as sugary little puddles. Oh well. Just need to bake more. 4. I know where Robin Williams and Nicolas Cage live in San Francisco. Robin has a pet dinosaur and Nick’s driveway gets blocked a lot. I want to go to a party on Robin’s back porch. 5. When I was less than five-years-old, I fell off a horse and landed in a pile of poo. It wasn’t my fault. The person leading me around wasn’t paying attention and a branch swept me right out of the saddle. I still remember looking at myself in the mirror back at the barn and bursting into tears because I had brown goo all over. 6. When I was 8-years-old, I had a dream about being a princess in a forest and having a prince named Eric arrive and play at swords with me. It’s still the most vivid dream I’ve ever had. 7. I have a savings account for a trip to New Zealand before I turn 30. I put money in every month. Design Study: Price Tower. Bartlesville, Oklahoma. By Frank Lloyd Wright. IMG 3055 The Price Tower was commissioned by Harold C. Price, for use as a corporate headquarters for his Bartlesville company. His wife, Mary Lou Patteson Price, and his two sons, Harold, Jr., and Joe, rounded out the building committee. The Prices were directed to Frank Lloyd Wright by architect Bruce Goff, who was then Dean of Architecture at the University of Oklahoma, where the Price sons had studied. That relationship bonded into a life-long patronage of both architects by the Price Family. Wright designed an Arizona home for the senior Prices and a Bartlesville home for Harold, Jr., his wife Carolyn Propps Price, and their six children. Goff, who was also a tenant at Price Tower, became the favored architect of Joe Price, designing a bachelor studio on his family's property in Bartlesville and two later additions following his marriage to Etsuko Yoshimochi. Wright nicknamed the Price Tower, which was built on the Oklahoma prairie, "the tree that escaped the crowded forest," referring not only to the building's construction, but also to the origins of its design. The Price Tower is supported by a central "trunk" of four elevator shafts which are anchored in place by a deep central foundation, as a tree is by its taproot. The nineteen floors of the building are cantilevered from this central core, like the branches of a tree. The outer walls hang from the floors and are clad in patinated copper "leaves." Wright had championed these design ideas, which other architects had put to use before the construction of the Price Tower, as early as the 1920s in his design for an apartment complex of four cantilevered towers for St. Marks-in-the-Bowerie in downtown New York City. Following the effects of the Great Depression, the project was shelved and adapted by Wright for the Price Company in 1952. Wright, therefore, plucked his "tree" out of the "crowded forest" of Manhattan skyscrapers and placed it on the Oklahoma prairie where it continues to stand uncrowded by neighboring tall buildings. The floorplan of the Price Tower centers upon an inlaid cast bronze plaque, bearing the logo of the Price Company and marking the origin of a parallelogram grid upon which all exterior walls, interior partitions and doors, and built-in furniture are placed. The resulting design is a quadrant plan—one quadrant dedicated for double-height apartments, and three for offices. The materials for the Price Tower are equally innovative for a mid-twentieth-century skyscraper: cast concrete walls, pigmented concrete floors, aluminum-trimmed windows and doors, and patinated embossed and disstressed copper panels. The general geometric element is the equilateral triangle, and all lighting fixtures and ventilation grilles are based upon that form while the angled walls and built-in furniture are based on fractions or multiples of the triangular module. The lobby contains two inscriptions by Walt Whitman. One is from the concluding stanza of Salut au Monde, and the other from Song of the Broad-Axe.[3] Wright designed the St. Mark's project for apartments, but his Price Tower was to be a multi-use building with business offices, shops, and apartments. The H. C. Price Company was the primary tenant, and the remaining office floors and double-height apartments intended as income-raising ventures. Tenants included lawyers, accountants, physicians, dentists, insurance agents, and the architect Bruce Goff, who kept an office in the tower as well as rented one of the apartments. A women's high-end dress shop, beauty salon, and the regional offices of the Public Service Company of Oklahoma occupied a two-story wing of the tower, with a drive-through passageway separating the high and low structures. The Price Company occupied the upper floors, and included a commissary on the sixteenth floor as well as a penthouse office suite for Harold Price, Sr., and later his son, Harold, Jr. The H.C. Price Company sold Price Tower to Phillips Petroleum in 1981 following a move to Dallas, where their company is presently located. Phillips Petroleum's lawyers deemed the exterior exit staircase a safety risk, and only used the building for storage.[4] They retained ownership until 2000 when the building was donated to Price Tower Arts Center, and it has returned to its multi-use origins. Price Tower Arts Center, a museum of art, architecture, and design; Inn at Price Tower; Copper Restaurant + Bar, and the Wright Place museum store are the current major tenants with smaller firms leasing space. In 2002 Pritzker Prize winning architect, Zaha Hadid, was commissioned to design a museum expansion for Price Tower Arts Center—a project that was included in the 2006 retrospective exhibition of Hadid's work at the Guggenheim Museum, New York City.
