About Grand Trunk
Formerly known as the Travel Hammock, Grand Trunk was established in early 2002 after two adventurous entrepreneurs met while backpacking in Thailand. The duo's first products were hammocks designed to set up pretty much anywhere, but as the company expanded its product selection to include shelters, quickset tents, and more, the company changed its name to Grand Trunk. Selling "goods for the road," the company is continually working hard to find new and exciting products based on the founders' shared enjoyment and adoration for the outdoor lifestyle. Grand Trunk is named after the Grand Trunk Road, a.k.a. the Long Walk, Southeast Asia's most colorful overland passage and an enduring symbol of freedom and adventure. Built in the 16th century and expanded by the Mughal and the British Empires, the Grand Trunk Road today stretches from Kabul to Calcutta, over the Himalayas and through the desert plains of India. Throughout history, the Grand Trunk Road has been key in the movement of explorers, travelers, goods, and ideas.

Looking North-Northeast

This was a Ben Franklin store when I came to the area in 1981. It sits right behind Perkins at 1828 Santa Fe.

Later, between about 1985 and 1991 it was a Food4Less grocery store. It was much too popular for its own good as a Food4Less in this size building.

The lines at the checkstands would extend 10-15 feet into the stock aisles, making it impossible for shoppers to wind their way thru the store properly.

It was cheap, but a shoppers' hell.

Venture was a discount store started by May Department Stores in 1968. It rivaled Target which was started by Dayton Department Store out of Minneapolis. Obviously we know which discount store won the battle. Venture closed all of its stores in 1998.

Our Venture closed here in Champaign as well and became a K's Merchandise which closed a few years ago. It's now a Hobby Lobby.
