Hotel Strathcona Photo-a-Day II Day 5 Vancouver's proximity of wealthy and new clashes strongly with its poverty and weathered. Hotel Strathcona, in the midst of Canada's worst drug addiction region stands as one of many symbolic buildings of how the city has neglected to deal with the drug problem with anything other than irritated contempt. However, attitudes do seem to be changing, despite the recent problem of designating old hotels into condominiums. Our Hotel Park House Hotel on the Sandringham estate. Run and operated by the Leonard Cheshire organisation. It's a very very posh swanky hotel which is designed and equipped especially to give disabled people and their carers a well earned break. I have to say, it was incredible. Before this building was converted for use as a hotel, it was owned by the Althorpe family, and was the house where Diana, Princess Of Wales was born and raised, and the hotel is adorned inside with portraits and tributes. Park House Park House Hotel is set in an impressive Victorian country house, within it's own grounds on the Sandringham Royal Estate in West Norfolk. The Queen made Park House available to Leonard Cheshire as a Hotel for disabled people. It was the childhood home of Diana Princess of Wales. CHEAP HOTELS IN DISNEY WORLD : HOTEL GARNI SCHLOSSBLICK : KEY WEST BED AND BREAKFAST FOR SALE. Cheap Hotels In Disney World
DR1021st/ "FEAR" Most if not all tourists visiting the Dominican Republic ( the country that shares the island of Hispanola with Haiti that's HAITI as in EARTHQUAKE ) head straight to the beaches on the east coast. Sea sun sand from morning till sunset with cakes of suntan lotion on their skins they lay on chaise lounges/beach towels, drinking their guts up, staring at the same thing they can stare at on any other island and after 5-10 days of the same routine leave so proudly, feeling so vain about their dark sun tan which translates into having had a terrific wonderful exotic "fun" vacation, that everyone at work will admire, applaud and envy! They talk about the food the slowness of the natives and actually make statements about the nation as if they really and truly left their hotel to see the natives in their habitats. I have been told that Hotel reps warn tourists not to leave the hotel environs to avoid serious theft rape and other cruelties. Tourists are made to be fearful! Fear leads to inertia, stagnation, and a "follow the leader mentality", i.e people become sheople......as in sheep. Inertia leads to ignorance ignorance leads to boredom, bigotry racism close-mindedness, and to a lack of understanding about this and other nations. Fear produces Philistinism. Philistinism is a derogatory term used to describe a particular attitude or set of values. A person called a Philistine (in the relevant sense), is said to despise or undervalue art, beauty, intellectual content, and/or spiritual values. Philistines are also said to be materialistic, to favor conventional social values unthinkingly, and to favor forms of art that have a cheap and easy appeal (e.g. kitsch). There are people who go to DISNEY WORLD every year. Do you get my point? ill keep trying. (Celebrating 50,000 views at FLICKR) thank you all very much ! gracias merci 04 Disney's Contemporary Resort Our previous trip to Orlando wasn't much fun. It was a last minute decision to take Chris there just months before Stephy was born. We figured by the time Stephy was old enough to travel, Chris would be too old for Disney's magic. We booked a cheap package because it was an unbudgeted trip. And we thought we wouldn't be spending much time at the hotel. Turned out Chris fell ill and we spent days in our room. So this time, we picked a decent hotel, the Contemporary Resort inside Disney World. It was an excellent choice. The room was comfortable and service was excellent. Plus we saved tons of time traveling to the theme parks. And we could avoid the crowds during off hours, so there's no line up for us!! ONE WASHINGTON CIRCLE HOTEL REVIEWS - CARLTON HOTEL RATES - HALL GAP ACCOMMODATION. One Washington Circle Hotel Reviews
Major General George H. Thomas Major General George H. Thomas Thomas Circle, 14th and Massachusetts Ave NW Sculptor: John Quincy Adams Ward Date: 1879 Medium: Bronze ---Thomas, a Virginian and graduate of West Point had served under Robert E. Lee in the west in the pre-civil war army, but in 1861 decided to cast his lot with the Union army. ---the heroic stand of his troops during the Chattanooga campaign in 1863 earned him both the nickname “the rock of Chickamauga” and the command of the Army of the Cumberland. Thomas became a major general after the rousing victory at Nashville where he defeated The Confederate Army of Tennessee. ---at the fourth reunion of the Society of the Army of the Cumberland in 1870 just after Thomas’s death, the members had voted to erect a monument to their fearless, stubborn leader. ---By 1873, the Society after creating committees in each state to raise funds had $10,000. Petitioning Congress, the Society asked for condemned canons for use in casting Thomas’s likeness. Congress agreed, giving 88 old bronze cannons and an appropriation of $25,000 for the statues pedestal. ---1873, seven sculptors submitted models for the statue, none of which were liked by the Society. The Society empowered the search committee to find a nationally recognized artist who would do the General justice ---1874, a contract was signed with New York sculptor, John Quincy Adams Ward for a 14’ high equestrian statue to be produced within 3 years for $35,000. ---Ward’s had come to the attention of the committee thru his previous works which include: …Seventh Regiment Memorial in New York’s Central Park …his 1872 portrait statue of Major General John Fulton Reynolds on the spot where Reynolds had fallen on the Gettysburg Battlefield ---this commission was Ward’s most important to date for a couple of reasons: …commissions for equestrian monuments were hard to come by …a successful equestrian monument in Washington would lead to future commissions, which it did for Ward (the James A. Garfield and Gen. Philip Sheridan Monuments) ---1875, Ward began working, using photos of Thomas, his uniform, and his saddle which were provided by his wife. Spring of 1879, Ward had completed the plaster model, so he invited the press, officers of the Society of the Army of the Cumberland, Thomas’s family, and several army officers to his NY studio to see it. They all loved it! It was put back under wraps until its unveiling in Washington while Ward finished his work. ---November 19, 1879, the national press converged on Washington for the dedication of the statue to Gen. Thomas, leading “Harpers Weekly” to call it the grandest ceremony ever in the capital. The “New York Times” claimed it drew the biggest turnout since the Grand Review of the troops in May 1865. Neither publication was exaggerating since it had only been a mere 12 years since the end of the Civil War, trainloads of veterans arrived, some came for the 11th encampment of the Society of the Army of the Cumberland which had commissioned the statue, impromptu reunions occurred on sidewalks, in hotels, and in the saloons. The federal government closed for the event. ---the parade second only in size to the Grand Review stretched for over two miles. Homes were decorated with bunting, the circle itself was surrounded with banners bearing the names of all the generals with whom Thomas had served. ---President Rutherford B. Hayes, the cabinet, congressmen, members of the military and many other dignitaries gathered to watch the unveiling. Sen. Stanley Matthews (OH) delivered the address recounting Thomas’s “conspicuous and unselfish devotion to public duty” concluding with this hope “when marble shall have crumbled to clay and brass become corroded by the rust of time, may the liberties of the people which he defended still survive, inspired to deeds of virtue and heroic duty by the memory of his example”. ---when the flags parted, a huge approval went up from the crowd, there was Thomas astride his horse silhouetted against the sky (some said too high). ---together the horse and rider are one of Ward’s most successful works, conveying power, strength, and action. The horse exudes a nervous energy in sharp contrast to the calm confidence of its rider. The horses four legs planted firmly on a slight incline, the horse sniffs the air with dilated nostrils. Its mouth is open, its head tossed back, and its ears are erect, while its mane and tail blow in a stiff breeze. Thomas sits atop, relaxed, wide brim hat in hand (an effect to allow the viewer a good look at Thomas’s face. ---the veterans in attendance said that Ward had perfectly captured him. ---Critics regard this as one of the best equestrian statues in the city Washington DC - Foggy Bottom: Washington Circle This equestrian statue of Lieutenant General George Washington, executed by Clark Mills, was dedicated in Washington Circle on February 20, 1860. Mills modeled his 9-foot bronze portrait after Jean Houdon's famous and much copied bust of Washington. The statue was authorized by an act of Congress on January 25, 1853 and again on February 24, 1860. Mills had originally designed an elaborate base, complete with relief panels and additional figures of Washington and his general, but a lack of funds resulted in a much simpler 9-foot, 8-inch marble base. The sculpture was temporarily moved during the early 1960s when the K Street underpass was built. It was reinstalled in 1963. Washington Circle is a traffic circle located at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue, New Hampshire Avenue, K Street, and 23rd Street, N.W. The through lanes of K Street (U.S. Route 29) travel underneath the circle in a tunnel, while the service lanes intersect the circle. ROMANTIC CHICAGO HOTELS - NEW WORLD RENAISSANCE HOTEL KOWLOON - HOTEL MAGNAN NICE. Romantic Chicago Hotels
O.W. Fischer, Maria Schell German postcard by WS-Druck, Wanne-Eickel, nr. F 44. Photo: Klaus Collignon. Austrian actor O.W. Fischer (1915–2004) was one of one of the most popular and highest-paid actors in German-language film in the 1950’s. He played the lead in dozens of light romantic comedies and historical pieces. Unlike countrymen Curd Jurgens, Maria Schell and Romy Schneider, he never made it internationally. Otto Wilhelm Fischer was born in 1915 in Klosterneuburg near Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now Austria). He was the son of a lawyer. After German and art studies at the University of Vienna he went to a drama school in 1936. He began his career later that year at Max Reinhardt's theatre company in Arthur Schnitzler’s Liebelei. He soon became a popular star in both German and Austrian playsand made the leap to German cinema. His first appearance in Burgtheater (1936, Willi Forst) led to 40 other films such as Anton, der Letzte/ Anthony the Last (1939, E.W. Emo), and Meine Tochter lebt in Wien/My Daughter Lives in Vienna (1940, E.W. Emo). In 1942 he married Czech actress Anna Usell, and the couple stayed together untill her death in 1985. From 1945 to 1952 he was an ensemble member at the famous Vienna Burgtheater. Known as Europe's answer to Cary Grant, O.W. Fischer specialized in romantic roles starring alongside Maria Holst, Marte Harell, Liselotte Pulver, Winnie Markus, or Ruth Leuwerik. These films include Marchen vom Gluck/Kiss Me Casanova (1949, Arthur De Glahs), Erzherzog Johanns grosse Liebe/Archduke Johann's Great Love (1950, Hans Schott-Schobinger), Heidelberger Romanze/Heidelberg Romance (1951, Paul Verhoeven), Tausend rote Rosen bluh'n/Thousand Red Roses (1952, Alfred Braun), and Ein Herz spielt falsch (1953, Rudolf Jugert). ‘Das Traumpaar’(dream couple) O.W. Fischer and Maria Schell made seven films together, such as Bis wir uns wiedersehn/Till We meet Again (1952, Gustav Ucicky), Der Traumende Mund/Dreaming Lips (1953, Josef von Baky), Solange Du da bist/ As Long as You're Near Me (1953, Harald Braun), and Tagebuch einer Verliebten/The Diary of a Married Woman (1953, Josef von Baky). Most of those productions were financially successful and he became one of the two highest paid actors in Germany. (Curd Jurgens was the other one). He also starred in the title role in the classic German film, Ludwig II (1955, Helmut Kautner). Fischer occasional assisted on directorial chores during the 1950’s. In 1955, he directed and starred in Hanussen (1955, O.W. Fischer, Georg Marischka), a film detailing the life of Erik Jan Hanussen, the Devil's Prophet, a well-known psychic who collaborated with the Nazis. While the film is considered highly romanticized, it assisted historians and biographers in uncovering previously unknown facts. In 1956 he directed and starred opposite Anouk Aimee in Ich suche Dich/I Am Looking For You (1956, O.W. Fischer), based on the play Jupiter Laughs, by A.J. Cronin. In 1956 Universal Studios signed Fischer to star with June Allyson in a remake of My Man Godfrey (1957, Henry Koster), but his Hollywood break ended before it began: When Fischer reportedly lost his memory during filming, he was replaced by David Niven. Other sources say that differences with director Henry Kosters and Universal Studios eventually cost him his contract.. So Fischer returned to Europe, where he acted in films like Peter Voss, der Millionendieb/Peter Voss, Thief of Millions (1958, Wolfgang Becker) and Menschen im Hotel/Grand Hotel (1959, Gottfried Reinhardt) with Michele Morgan. In the 1960’s O.W. Fischer and his wife Anna moved to Vernate, Switzerland. He kept appearing on tv and in the theatre. ROMANTIC DC HOTELS. SAVOY HOTEL GEORGETOWN. Romantic Dc Hotels
1103 Juliana St -- Circa 1899 -- Dills/Letich/Creel House Dr. A.H, Kunst, was apparently retired and living in this house in 1911: The following was reported in The Gazette Times, July 16, 1911: Dr. A.H. Kunst, was the former superintendent of the State Asylum for the Insane at Weston (as it was then known). Kunst’s mother was a sister of US Senator Johnson N. Camden of WV. His only sister, Mrs. William B. Craig, was wife of the noted congressman from Selma, Ala. Kunst’s brother Carl killed himself in Weston, his mother dropped dead in this house. His son, Earl Kunst, authored two romantic novels, “Justine” and “The Tragedy of Fairfax”, but separated from his wife and while in the process of divorce, checked himself into the Continental Hotel in Washington DC and shot himself in the head. News reports said he left directions for a messenger boy to come to the room at 2:30am, and when Charles Langley, the telegraph messenger went to his room, he found Kunst dead. He left a letter contemplating suicide, and paid for his room with his last money, as only one cent and two car tickets were found in his pocket. He went to his room, placed his head between two pillows, no doubt to muffle the sound when he fired the shot. In an envelope on the dresser addressed “To the Public and My Father” in it was found a messages Kunst had written in Atlantic City on July 7, a week before his death. One of the Atlantic City letter said “Standing in the Valley of the Shadow of Death, the veil of the incongruities of the mortal existence is lifted, and I understand—it was a vision clarified by suffering—that this special destiny was to be mine. I knew years ago. I have no regrets, for great is to be the compensation. I don’t know where I am going, but I am on my way. Good-bye.” In another message, written at the seashore, he told who he was and asked that his father be notified of his deed at his home, 1103 Juliana Street, Parkersburg, WV. He also wrote his father “Dear Papa—I have no remorse, for all is well. You could not have done otherwise. Good-bye for a little while.” His last message was to A.W. Chaffee, manager of the Continental Hotel: “Forgive me, please, if I have done you an injury. In taking my life, should I soil, deface, or destroy anything, inform my father, Dr. A.H. Kunst, 1103 Juliana Street, Parkersburg, WV, and he will make ample settlement.” ASTSWMO - Farewell - 110708 - 058-5x7 Nook for the bed (king, very comfortable) in the room at the Hotel Helix. Some people thought that there wasn't enough room to walk along the side of the bed if you had to get up at night. I personally liked the curtains that couldbe draw across the foot of the bed, creating a private, romantic alcove. Not that I needed a private, romantic alcove, but it is a nicethought... Brussels: Welcome Hotel No joke, this was in my parents suite at the Welcome Hotel in Brussels. Each room was decorated (tackily) in the style of a different exotic locale. My parents stayed in "Egypt" which was complete with a gold sarcophagus, King Tut carpeting, hieroglyphic murals and...a light-up pyramid. I could not wipe the smile off of my face for hours. Executive Suite Tuesday, Oct 24, 2006. Houston, Texas. Was working from the Houston office yesterday. Arrived on Monday night and left on Wednesday morning. The Park Inn Glasgow. George Hotel Edinburgh. Boutique Hotel Offers The Park Inn Glasgow
George Rogers Clark final daleglasgow070410 mod8 v1sm I began this painting as commission from Jim Reger of King George County to pay tribute to a Virginia hero from colonial times-- the Revolutionary War in 1779. Jim and I met to talk through the size of the painting and how it would be placed in his office at the Reger group. He provided an earlier image of an oil painting by Ezra Winter of George Rogers Clark done in the 1930’s for the then new memorial in Vincennes Indiana. I agreed it was a beautiful piece of art and set out to create a sketch with my own view of how a picture if this hero of Virginia would be portrayed. I saw this story as a divine possibility, God allowed men to do the impossible. When the war was not going well in the northwest territory, Clark, a savvy Caroline county native with some frontier military experience in Kentucky, got an audience with governor Patrick Henry, a secret meeting in Williamsburg, Virginia. Henry also met secretly with close associates and finally provided Clark with money to form an expedition to the Ohio valley to protect the settlers from Indians but more from the English.. Clark was an excellent choice for the subject of a painting. The expedition of 170 men traveled 180 miles in an Ohio winter, with water to their shoulders, soaked to the bone, slept by meager fires to recover at night, and maybe have food enough to keep them strong enough to march. Morale was always low, but Clark always had ways of bolstering their resolve. He at times would send men ahead of the group to say that the water was shallower and they were near dry land. At their arrival to Vincennes Indiana, Clark warned the English controlled town of a battle coming to their fort and for any men to join them. At the amazement of Clark—he had caught the English off guard in their winter’s nest without troops –but with enough explosives to blow up the fort. Over the next night and day, Clark’s force sent destructive fire into the English fort, smashing any hope for the English victory. The English asked for terms of surrender to which Clark told them no terms accepted. The firing from Clark’s men continued, some 50 shots fired to every English attempt to fire. The next day an Indian party came to the fort and was surrounded by Clark’s men. 17 were killed in the exchange and 2 more were killed and thrown into the river as testament to their resolve. Two American prisoners with them were freed . In view of these overwhelming events, The English general Hamilton asked for a meeting—hoping Clark would allow them to leave as prisoners. Clark was convinced that the English were evil-doers with their scalping friends --the Indians were to be executed unless they surrendered. Clark responded: “I said that the cries of the widows and the fatherless they had occasioned upon the frontiers now required their blood at my hands and I did not choose to be so timorous as to disobey the absolute command of their authority, which I regarded as next to divine. I said I would rather lose fifty men than to surrender the power properly to execute this piece of business. If he chose to risk the massacre of his garrison for their sakes it was his own affair and I might perhaps take it into my head to send for some of those widows to see it executed.“ Hamilton left the meeting, Clark gave him till the next morning to decide. The next day the fort was surrendered, very orderly, Hamilton gave Clark his sword. Hamilton wept when he understood how few men Clark had in his force. The days that Clark and his men had come to defend our American interests were well spent, no men had perished in their calling. They had taken the enemy like Joshua marching around Jericho –until the walls came tumbling down—the enemy was defeated.— A triumph by the Divine. God stepped in for our American fathers and gave them victory, this is the spirit of my painting. I provided Jim Reger the rough sketch, he approved it in its form. The next day I left for Ohio to work with re-enactors from George Rogers Clark Historical Foundation. My wife Sharon , daughter Ellie and friend Allie began the full day trip and stayed in a Days Inn outside of Springfield near the foundation’s office. Rusty Cottrell, the foundation’s president and I met that afternoon and discussed history and potential locations for the photo shoot. We chose Hosterman lake in the GRCHF park as the site to photograph the re-enactors for the next day. We had about 10 re-enactors the next day, I showed them the sketch, they were excited, not having gotten in water with all their gear before. After 300 photos and a long day, With no way to appreciate their efforts, I thanked them all, offered each person a copy of the finished painting in print form and headed back to Virginia. I immediately created a new sketch with real characters. I was missing some integral poses, I contacted George Washington’s Fredericksburg Foundation to find two more re-enactors. They agreed, we shot them the following Saturday, a Glasgow Road, Kirkintilloch. A view looking up West High Street from the Glasgow Road. The old toll house is on the left and the Washington Inn on the right. The white buildings in the centre is a farm. All the buildings are still in place today and the scene is not much changed. The grassed area is the Victoria Park, now renamed as the Peel Park. These views of Kirkintilloch are from the out-of-print 'Kirkintilloch in Old Picture Postcards', by Don Martin. The nikko hotel : Hotel sales manager cover letter : Cheap hotels in mrytle beach. The Nikko Hotel
wifiing in the lobby (Or, no one but me is wifiing around here at nikko hotel tokyo) thanks for NTT docomo mzone so comfortable here. it only costs 350 yen or usd 3 or so a month if you have subscription with docomo mobile. extremely cheap compared to US counterparts - what is it T-zone 30 dollars a month? this photo taken by softbank smartphone x01ht.. you definitely need shozu which is very powerful in the wifi smartphone environment, would allow you to upload direct from mini sd card which is otherwise impossible without shozu. Japan is a wifi paradise in my opinion, thanks to Son san of softbank who implemented whatever he believes. The thing is not FON or docomo mzone or any other player that has extremely low awareness among conventional people. It is WIFI that's not known until this day to the general public. Docomo mzone, softbank mobile, FON, or even google mobile, and all the wifi providers should promote WIFI together to increase the awareness and to achieve critical mass. Or, they all gonna fail. Nikko Hotel Narita The Nikko Narita... a slightly better hotel than the other two I stayed at.. The Japanese are a little stingy with the pillows though..
