Carpet cleaning
Nard has become a little incontinent in his old age, so we borrowed a carpet cleaner from a neighbour.
It's amazing how scruffy this rug was, but thankfully we don't have many carpets so it didn't take too long

Carpeteria..still in business!
On Virginia street, Reno, NV..at first I thought it was closed, but it's still in business. It opened in 1980. View large and on black. I shot this from the In-N-Out burger drive-thru from across the street, I was sitting in the car, so am sorry about the clarity!

Coffee at the Metro 29 Diner in Arlington, VA
I made this shot while having breakfast with a good friend a few years back. I used to live in Arlington, VA and frequented this diner quite a good bit. I'm a non-smoker and I was always disappointed that the smoking section was the most interesting place in the diner. The smokers had the best booths with the best light and they were right next to the counter service bar. I do think the smoking section finally got put somewhere else.

Site Notice 2010
Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire
In 2006 Tesco announced plans for a new store on an ex-industrial site with listed buildings. Local residents and traders, worried about the impact a new store would have on the town centre and traffic, started a campaign to oppose the plans. In August 2009 a new application by Tesco was given outline planning permission for a store, car park and petrol station at the former Carpets of Worth factory site in Severn Road.
In October 2009, the Co-op won the go-ahead to bring a new legal challenge to the grant of planning permission to Tesco. Appeal Court judge Lord Justice Dyson ruled that Midcounties Co-op has an arguable case, justifying a full appeal hearing on a date yet to be scheduled. Please see an article in the Kidderminster Shuttle, 27th October 2009.
In April 2010 the Co-op took their battle to stop Tesco opening in the town to London’s Court of Appeal. The Midcounties Co-operative Limited is asking Lord Justice Laws, Lady Justice Smith and Lord Justice Rimer to quash the planning permission granted by Wyre Forest District Council in May 2008 for a Tesco at the former Carpets of Worth site, in Severn Road, on the grounds that a condition limiting the retail floorspace is unclear.
At the end of July the three judges ruled that the condition was "sufficiently clear and certain" and that the permission should stand. Please see an article in the Kidderminster Shuttle, 29th July 2010.
In September 2010 Tesco submitted a further detailed planning application to Wyre Forest District Council that if approved would allow it to proceed with development of a new supermarket in Stourport. The company has previously received two outline planning permissions from the council for two separate sets of plans for the former Carpets of Worth site. Please see an article in the Kidderminster Shuttle, 1st October 2010.
On 12th October Wyre Forest Councillors approved Tesco's application for a new supermarket, car-park and petrol stations. Please see an article in the Kidderminster Shuttle, 13th October 2010.
Background
On the 3rd January 2008 Stourport town councillors again deferred discussion of Tesco's planning application until they received a report on traffic impact from Worcestershire County Council. Please see article in the Kidderminster Shuttle for more information. On the 3rd March 2008 Wyre Forest District Council Planning Committee approved Tesco's outline planning application. The Town Council also voted 10-2 in favour of the application.
However, the application came back to the planning committee in May after new information was received that suggested the extra traffic could cause unacceptable levels of air pollution in Stourport town centre. But at a meeting on the 15th May the Planning Committee rejected the new evidence and re-approved the planning application. For further information please see the Kidderminster Shuttle, 16th May 2008
On the 5th September 2008 the Express and Star reported that the Co-op has called for a judicial review claiming the decision to give the new store the go-ahead was flawed.
In August 2009 a new application by Tesco was given outline planning permission for a store, car park and petrol station at the former Carpets of Worth factory site in Severn Road. Members of the district council’s planning committee voted overwhelmingly in favour of granting delegated approval to the bid subject to referral to the Secretary of State and a long list of planning conditions. The conditions included “extensive” highways improvements with the construction of a new pedestrian bridge and a new link road to Discovery Road. For further information please see an article in the Shuttle, 7th August 2009.

CARPET CLEANING BUCKS - CLEANING BUCKS

- A vaulting horse
- A male hare, rabbit, ferret, rat, or kangaroo
- (buck) vaulting horse: a gymnastic horse without pommels and with one end elongated; used lengthwise for vaulting

- (buck) dollar: a piece of paper money worth one dollar
One of the great things about cleaning up my backlog is I can now shoot film - develop -- scan -- and even print - all in the same day. Pretty cool, eh?
So -- this photo was taken around noon today. I'd say it was around 48F -- but Mae INSISTED on wearing her "baby coat" - and "my owl hat" -- I tried to tell her it was going to get even warmer -- but nope -- she didn't want to listen to old dad...
So -- I decided to take her to the lake -- yes, it's true in Toronto - as it is in Chicago - it's cooler by the lake! It was actually pretty nipply down there -- but she was prepared...
I shot this frame with a camera I picked up for $150 -- and with Shanghai GP3 100 speed film. I read horror stories about the film -- how awful it is -- What you see here is a straight scan -- I didn't have to clean the neg up at all -- there was NO dust - or if there is, I can't see it.
The only thing is the film IS very curly - but what do you want for about a buck a roll?
In other news: I've made it through four days of caring for Mae on my own. I don't have any real complaints -- other than the fact that one of the dogs - (not my angel of a dog) - ripped open a garbage bag of diapers I was going to toss out this evening - I'll just leave it at that -- no description -- but Mae's carpet needs replacing...
Just 4 more days to go...
The buck stops here...
This city buck caused my heart to skip a beat..
I guess he would be classified as "atypical"..LOL made a goof - see note..
Still don't know if hunters are allowed to take deer in the city.
Bow season started here too.

Carpet Python
This python was settling down for the night on a precarious branch in the mangroves. About 12 feet below was the Brisbane River. We were just above it on a boardwalk behind the mangroves which are flowering and I think the snake was nicely positioned to grab any bird that came to feed on the nectar. It was a mid-sized snake.

SEAGRASS AREA RUGS. AREA RUGS
Seagrass area rugs. Price of carpets.
Seagrass Area Rugs
- (Area Rug) A rug intended to cover a limited area of a floor. Area rugs come in a variety of different materials, including wool, leather, silk and more.
- A rug that covers only a part of a floor in a room
- (area rug) a rug that only covers part of the floor of a room; a carpet
- Rugs are also woven or felted from fibers, but are smaller than the room in which they are located, have a finished edge, and usually lie over another finished floor such as wood flooring.
- Seagrasses are flowering plants from one of four plant families (Posidoniaceae, Zosteraceae, Hydrocharitaceae, or Cymodoceaceae), all in the order Alismatales (in the class of monocotyledons), which grow in marine, fully-saline environments.
- A salt marsh grass that is grown in paddy-like fields and flooded with sea water during the crop cycle. The hard, almost inpenetrable seagrass is spun into tough strands which resist most stains and dirt. Material is anti-static and provides a low dust and allergy-free environment.
- A grasslike plant that lives in or close to the sea, esp. eelgrass
- any of various seaweeds that grow underwater in shallow beds; "seagrass provides a protective environment in which young fish can develop"
Seagrass trio
I love seagrass in the bathroom, and when I saw these (in all sorts of yummy colors) at World Market for $2.99, I couldn't pass them up.
But I wanted them raised safely off the surface of the countertop. So I sliced up a synthetic wine cork, and hot glued a little "leg" to each corner. It seems to do the trick pretty well!
from dining to kitchen wide angle
I stenciled the dining area seagrass rug with wood stain for pattern and interest.

Goodbye Bob Long
Bob Long retires as News Director from KNBC today and this weekend he hops on a plane for Istanbul Turkey, where he will teach journalism ethics at Bahcesehir University. Bob and my dad, David Browning have been friends since the late sixties, when they worked together as news writers at KNXT (now KCBS). Bob remembers me as a rug rat and was gracious enough to hire me at KNBC nearly 40 years later. With his signature bow tie, the fully stocked bar in his office and his witty, measured adherence to quality storytelling, he was our brassy link to the golden days of journalism. KNBC will sorely miss him.
From: Long, Robert (NBC Universal, KNBC)
Sent: Wednesday, August 26, 2009 11:18 AM
Subject: Last Writethru
BURBANK (AP) -- Los Angeles newsman Robert Long today announced his retirement from KNBC. A station spokesman, who would give her name only as “Trixie”, said that KNBC staffers were sorry to see Long go, but they’d get over it. The man some called “The General” because of his remarkable resemblance to Marine Corps hero “Chesty” Puller, is thought to have begun his career in journalism at the age of 14 over shots and beer in a Washington, D. C. saloon. Archives of The Washington Post (in the 1950s cities had information distribution systems called “newspapers”) show that Fidel Castro was in town to meet with President Eisenhower and try to establish normal relations with the U. S. Legend has it that Castro dispatched one of his lieutenants to round up some women for a discussion of Marxist metrics that evening at the embassy, and ran into Long over brewskies. Long allegedly told the “barbudo” what he knew about finding women and out of sympathy for the youngster’s bizarre notions on the subject, the freedom fighter invited Long to hang with Castro and the boys and learn a thing or two. Thus, folklore has it, began the long career of a man investigative journalist and longtime Long associate Frank Snepp described as “Zelig with a gun”.
“He was always around the ball but no one knew what position he played or what team he was on,” Snepp said. “First there was the Castro thing, then a meeting with Khrushchev. He was at Time Magazine when Kennedy was murdered and showed up at Yale with George Bush. In the thick of things in Vietnam, he was an advisor to a Marine general who was killed in action. Then he shows up in the Congo with Mobutu and in Beirut during the civil war. It goes on and on. The guy’s a freak.”
Ed Asner and Bill Shatner held a joint newsconference shortly after word of Long’s retirement leaked out. “We made a good living portraying this guy on TV,” Shatner said. Asner added, “I’m probably too old to play him again, but MTM and I have talked about a reprise of some of his best newsroom stuff. She’s never forgotten working for him at CBS.” Reached at his forward command post, Camp Barsac, Long said, “You’ve got to filter all that through a good martini. A grenade went off near Frank’s head in Saigon, Asner’s a commie, and Shatner never got over my working with Nimoy.” Asked if he was leaving KNBC because he was too “Old Corps” to handle new technologies and the rise of “citizen journalism”, Long hurled his Zippo at the questioner’s head and snorted, “No one has ever accused me of giving a damn what people think. If I wanted their opinion, I’d give it to them. That’s what real journalists do. As for that Israeli Rosetta Stone of an operating system, I can make it do barrel rolls. I’m leaving because I’m turning 65, you moron. It took me weeks to figure out how to enroll in Medicare and that was a sign. I could sit around channeling Jerry Dunphy or go to Istanbul to teach at a private university and fish for Turkish trout in the Atlas Mountains. It’s a no-brainer.” “All I can say about that,” Snepp said, “is watch the Middle East. Long thinks he’s some kind of Jedi and he’s on a mission. Let’s pray the Turkish power companies aren’t into wind farms.
Now the official version from general manager Craig Robinson:
From: Robinson, Craig P (NBC Universal) Bob Long possesses many great qualities and one of his best is that he's a man of his word. He has long maintained that 2009 would be his final year leading a newsroom and, sadly for us, he is keeping to that plan, announcing his retirement effective Friday, September 25th. Also true to form, his next move will be exotic and glamorous - he is leaving on October 1st to teach a semester of journalism ethics at Bahcesehir University on the Bosphorus, the legendary waterway that divides Europe and Asia in Istanbul, Turkey. Those of us who have worked with Bob are members of a small and privileged club. Trying to explain the gift of this experience to someone who hasn't is nearly impossible. He taught us something new every day, and every morsel was accompanied by laughter and humor. I had the rare chance to work with him twice and I don't take that privilege lightly. Bob's professional acknowledgements include numerous Golden Mikes, Emmys and Edwa
Mariah's Bedroom
I finally finished Mariah's bed-room room-box. It's in one-and-a-half-inch scale (1.5 in. = 1 ft.). The floor is made of cherry veneer. The moldings and fireplace are painted plywood, except for the mantle, which I made by cutting apart a picture-frame. I used a mini brick "wallpaper" for the inside of the fireplace. The whole thing is built inside of an Ikea drawer.
The rug and bed frame are from Gail Wilson's Hitty kits. I made the bed hangings from my own material and intend to upholster a wing chair to match. I also plan to replace the handkerchief-blanket with a quilted coverlet. Speaking of Gail Wilson, I made Mariah's dress from some of Gail's "Mini Prints" fabric.
The chairs are from an Ebay auction, I don't know who made them originally. Mariah's trunk is from the American Girl Felicity set. The candlesticks are antique and hold birthday-cake candles.
Eventually, I want to make a needlepoint sampler to hang above the fireplace, a round tea-table, a candle stand, and a vanity table. And of course, I'll be adding crown moldings, some day. But for now, Mariah is happy with the room as it is.

16 random facts
I've been tagged in what seems to be quite a charming game, that's doing the rounds, of getting to know more about one another here on Flickr.
Asked to share 16 random facts you may not know about me, here they are:
1. I grew up on a farm in South Africa where I still cherish my most fondest of memories. We had the whole barn filled with hay and everything, plus 2 dams that resided on either side of the house.
2. I won a Willards Cheese Curls painting competition when I was 12 years old and earned the nickname 'Chip' for years to follow.
3. It later became Hunter. Which is my second name. (It was going to be my first name, with Lee as my second but for some reason a cousin of mine shared Lee and so my folks thought they'd be original and chose Craig as my first name instead. I knew 10 Craigs by the time I left high school.)
4. I procrastinate.
5. I pay a lot of attention to the geometry of everything. I have, many times, walked into a room where every step I take avoids intersecting with any imaginary adjacent or parallel line that's created by the nearby objects and furniture on the floor. This especially includes floors with tiled carpeting. (don't ask)
6. I have good aim. In the all-boys high school I attended, every kid wanted to be on the shooting team, but they made tryouts for only one additional placing every 3 or so years. I made it. There were nearly 400 of us who competed for it at the time. Subsequently, it's helped in other ways though: playing pool, darts, 1st-person shooter games and winning teddy-bears at fairs. In my other life, I was a sniper. ;)
7. I have a script for the most awesome movie ever. (But it's impeded by fact no. 4)
8. I've had 3 near-death experiences. One involved a car stopping on the edge of a cliff (driver was asleep at the wheel), the second involved myself falling off a cliff (I landed on the only tree sticking out of the rock-face) and the third involved a taxi bus hitting me while crossing the road. (If you know anything about South African minibus taxis, you'll know that this one's a miracle on its own.)
9. I also have two scars. One behind my left ear at a very young age from a kid who threw a lead pipe at me in a playground and one above my left eye-brow from an attempted surfing accident. Incidentally, two of my front teeth are also false. They were severed when in junior school by a kid who tripped me while running in gym.
10. Surprisingly, I've never broken a bone in my body.
11. I was obsessed with magic as a kid. I believed my parents couldn't afford to get the magic set I wanted, so I used to collect my own tricks, as well as invent new ones. Today I can't remember a single one of them. Not even a decent card trick.
12. Lasagna and trifle are the only meals I'll still go so far as having thirds of.
13. I was once visited by a ghost. It happened about 10 years ago and tormented me for three to four nights. It tried to visit me once a few years later but I know how to drive it away now.
14. I secretly dig chick flicks.
15. I have a major fear of snakes. My first encounter was at the age of 4 when a mole-snake slid over the back of my legs in long grass while playing hide and seek. Since then I fear of finding one in my shoes.
16. I want to be known for creating at least one truly amazing thing but I fear I'm running out of time.
hobbit hole
Some Hobbits live in "hobbit-holes", traditional underground homes found in hillsides, downs, and banks. Like all Hobbit architecture, they are notable for their round doors and windows.
"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.
It had a perfectly round door like a porthole, painted green, with a shiny yellow brass knob in the exact middle. The door opened on to a tube-shaped hall like a tunnel: a very comfortable tunnel without smoke, with panelled walls, and floors tiled and carpeted, provided with polished chairs, and lots of lots of pegs for hats and coats -- the hobbit was fond of visitors. The tunnel wound on and on, going fairly but not quite straight into the side of the hill -- The Hill, as all the people for many miles round called it -- and many little round doors opened out of it, first on one side and then on another. No going upstairs for the hobbit: bedrooms, bathrooms, cellars, pantries (lots of these), wardrobes (he had whole rooms devoted to clothes), kitchens, diningrooms, all were on the same floor, and indeed on the same passage. The best rooms were all on the lefthand side (going in), for these were the only ones to have windows, deep-set round windows looking over his garden, and meadows beyond, sloping down to the river.
- J. R. R. Tolkien, "The Hobbit"

Green Magic carpet for bikes!
Rose Quarter, Portland, Oregon. So glad they are finally let bikes through!
A year ago St. Patrick's Day 2008, Portland started putting down green bike boxes and green lanes on the pavement. I love them. And they really do work. I commute up to OHSU once a week all the way down Broadway, and it used to be a really aggressive ride where I had to fight my way through turning cars. While I still bike defensively, I don't have very many cars try to turn into me anymore. hoorah! The best part is after Broadway ends and I wind my way over to Terrwilliger Blvd, there is a really long green magic carpet green bike lane that goes around the corner. I feel like I'm flying!
House of Mouse
The Monster's Inc. Laugh Floor had so much potential, so I quickly themed it to the old TV show House of Mouse. Around the tables, our guests include Ariel's sisters, Lumiere, Magic Carpet, Ariel, and characters from Wonderland. I had many famous guests, like Minnie Mouse, Woody from Toy Story, Lilo and Stitch, Alice in Wonderland, and Will Turner to name a few. I would dress as Mickey and host the shows. The curtains on the stage would open to reveal movies and entertainment.

A strange attractor is created when lovers synchronize their minds, bodies, and computers using botanical substances.
An enchanted and skewed digital dream world, Strange Attractor inverts the Adam and Eve story and re-visions the Persian/Arabian tale of Layla and Majnun.
Sufi love madness meets media prophecy.

WELWYN CARPET MILLS - WELWYN CARPET
Welwyn carpet mills - Carpet show - Round rugs sale.
Welwyn Carpet Mills
- (Carpet mill) A sided rectangular designed treadle for treading a dog in place to condition and exercise with emphasis on lungs; slat mill; straight mill; treadmill.
- Welwyn is a village and civil parish in Hertfordshire, England. The parish also includes the villages of Digswell and Oaklands. It should not be confused with the newer settlement of Welwyn Garden City, about a mile to the south.
A Moving Carpet: The Life of Esther Mills
This book, the first of two volumes, describes the early life of Esther Brewer Mills who grew up on an Iowa farm in the early 1900's in a family of modest means and no family history of higher education. But, Esther at an early age decided to pursue a college education and, unlike most college women of her era who majored in traditional "feminine" curricula, she majored in Economics at Iowa State College. Financially, she worked and struggled her way through college having to drop out for a year in order to earn enough to be able to finish her degree and graduate. While at Iowa State, she met a young entomology student, Harlow Mills, and they eventually married. Following a short stay in Texas, they returned to Iowa where they had two sons, David (the author) and Gary. They lived for a year in Yellowstone Park where Harlow was a Ranger-Naturalist before moving to Bozeman, Montana where Harlow accepted a position as a professor and they set down roots. Volume One describes Esther's life up to the beginning of World War II and the birth of her daughter, Judy.
