The Musical Instrument making area of the Vogtland , around Markneukirchen and Klingenthal stretched across the Czech-German border, the czech side being predominantly German speaking. The firm of Franz Michl had branches on both sides. The postmark was bi-lingual until October 1938 when all traces of the czech language were removed from the postal system in the Sudetenland and the Hindenburg stamps replaced those showing Czech heroes. 10 heller was equivalent to 1 pfennig.. The postcard firm of Gerhard Dick of Erlbach was located right beside the border and he also marketed photographs of the Bohemian area around Graslitz (Kraslice). A fine museum of Musical Instruments is still located in Klingenthal, a small town which formerly also operated trams.
The 1930s postage rate to EUROPE for postcards was 150 heller, but for neighbouring countries ,Germany certainly, a 120 heller rate obtained. Inland was 50 heller (100 heller = 1 Koruna or Crown)

Tascam GTR1
With TASCAM's GT-R1, you can plug in and record anywhere. It combines a portable recorder with an instrument trainer for the ultimate songwriter's toolkit. Record using the built-in stereo condenser microphones, or plug in your guitar or bass to record using the amp simulator, reverb and multi-effects. The GT-R1's built-in rhythm machine sets the groove when beginning your song, and the overdub mode allows you to build a song step-by-step.
TASCAM's GT-R1 records in MP3 or WAV format, 16-bit or 24-bit. A generous 1GB SD card is included to get you started, and the USB 2.0 jack charges the recorder and copies your recordings to your PC or Mac. There's a low cut filter and analog limiter to keep levels under control, whether you're improvising in the studio or recording rehearsals or concerts.
There's no better tool for learning new songs and solos than TASCAM's instrument trainers. Load MP3 files into the GT-R1 and plug in to play along. Loop a section of a solo with two button presses, then slow it down without changing the pitch. You can even switch on a Guitar or Bass canceller to play along with the original rhythm section. The GT-R1 also includes a chromatic tuner and metronome for practice and warmup.
Don't go anywhere without your guitar and your new songwriting partner, the GT-R1.

Janelle Monáe
Janelle Monáe (born December 1, 1985) is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and performer. She is currently signed to the Wonderland Arts Society and Bad Boy/Atlantic Records. Monáe first introduced herself to the music scene with a conceptual EP, Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase), which gained her a Grammy nomination for her track "Many Moons".[1] The EP failed to make much of an impact commercially peaking at 115 in the United States.[2] In 2010 Monáe released her first studio album, The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III), a concept album sequel to her first EP. It was released to general acclaim from critics and gained a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album; the song "Tightrope" was also nominated for "Best Urban/Alternative Performance". The album also made more of an impact commercially, peaking at number 17 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
In 2007, Monáe released her first solo work, titled Metropolis. It was originally conceived as a concept album in four parts, or "suites", which were to be released through her website and mp3 download sites. After the release of the first part of the series, Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase) in mid-2007, these plans were altered following her signing with Sean "Diddy" Combs's label, Bad Boy Records, later in the year. The label gave an official and physical release to the first "suite" in August 2008, which was re-titled Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition) and included two new tracks. The EP was generally well-received by critics, garnering Monáe a 2009 Grammy nomination in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance for her single "Many Moons",[6] festival appearances and opening slots for the indie pop band Of Montreal. Monáe also toured as the opening act for band No Doubt on their summer 2009 tour.[7] Her single "Open Happiness" was featured in the 2009 season finale of American Idol.[8] Monáe told MTV about her concept for her new album and also discussed her alter-ego named Cindi Mayweather, she said:
"Cindy is an android and I love speaking about the android because they are the new “other”. People are afraid of the other and I believe we’re going to live in a world with androids because of technology and the way it advances. The first album she was running because she had fallen in love with a human and she was being disassembled for that."
In a November 2009 interview, Monáe revealed the title and concept behind her album, The ArchAndroid. The album was released on 18 May 2010. The second and third suites of Metropolis are combined into this full-length release, in which Monáe's alter-ego, Cindi Mayweather—also the protagonist of Metropolis: The Chase Suite— becomes a messianic figure to the android community of Metropolis.[10] Monáe noted that she plans to shoot a video for each song on The ArchAndroid and create both a movie and graphic novel based on the album.[11] The Metropolis concept series draws inspiration from a wide range of musical, cinematic and other sources, ranging from Alfred Hitchcock to Debussy to Philip K. Dick. However, the series puts Fritz Lang's 1927 silent film Metropolis, which Monáe referred to as "the godfather of science-fiction movies," in special regard.[12][13] Aside from sharing a name, they also share visual styles (the cover for The ArchAndroid is inspired by the iconic poster for Metropolis), conceptual themes and political goals, using expressionistic future scenarios to examine and explode contemporary ideas of prejudice and class. Both also include a performing female android, though to very different effect. Where Metropolis android Maria is the evil, havoc-sowing double of the messianic figure to the city's strictly segregated working class, Monáe's messianic android muse Cindi Mayweather represents an interpretation of androids as that segregated minority, which Monáe describes as "... the Other. And I feel like all of us, whether in the majority or the minority, felt like the Other at some point."[12][14]
Monáe received the Vanguard Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers at the Rhythm & Soul Music Awards in 2010.[15] Monáe covered Charlie Chaplin's Smile on Billboard.com in June 2010. In an NPR interview in September 2010, Monae stated that she is a believer in, and a proponent of time travel. Monáe performed "Tightrope" during the second elimination episode of the 11th Season of Dancing with the Stars on September 28, 2010.[16] Monáe performed at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2011 alongside artists Bruno Mars and B.o.B; Monáe performed the synth section of B.o.B's song "Nothin' On You" and she then performed her track "Cold War" with B.o.B on the Guitar and Mars on the drums. Her performance received a standing ovation.[17]
Her single, "Tightrope" was featured on the American Idols LIVE! Tour 2011, perf
Label...
I knew there was some sort of label under that nasty finish but I didn't know what it was. I started removing the finish with laquer thinner and discovered this! It's a chart labeling the string numbers, notes and scales of how to play the thing! How cool! Bad thing is, in getting the finish off the thinner also wanted to take off the black dye they used for the label, so a lot of it came off. bummer.

By Chris Neal - Performing Songwriter Magazine
Daryl Hall & John Oates: WEB EXTRAS
In the November issue of Performing Songwriter you’ll find our in-depth cover story on the most successful duo in pop history, Daryl Hall and John Oates. In these exclusive outtakes from our interviews with the two, each discusses his latest projects away from his longtime musical partner. Hall talks about the inception of his Internet series Live From Daryl’s House, as well as his interest in renovating homes. Meanwhile, Oates recounts the recording of his new solo album, 1,000 Miles of Life, and his immersion in the music-making community of Nashville.
DARYL HALL
Where did the idea for Live From Daryl’s House come from?
I won’t say I’m easily bored, but I like to keep moving. I like to keep changing things and evolving. I wanted to go beyond the idea that you’re just playing songs to an audience in a traditional way. I was looking for more interesting ways to do that, and what I decided is to bring the audience to me rather than go to the audience. I wanted to make the audience feel almost like one of the musicians in the room. From there, I said, “Well, maybe I should have some guests, because otherwise it’ll just be me, me, me.” That’s when it really took off, and I realized that that’s what I was looking for all along.
How do you figure out who’s going to be on with you?
I’ll give you an example. I have a 15-year-old stepdaughter who is a total musician, and she has the same tastes that I do. She’ll play me a song she likes and I’ll go, “OK, let’s call that guy up and see what happens.” Things generally happen like that. Someone will say, “Here’s an artist who’s influenced by you, or has mentioned you in the press or just sounds like you, or sounds like something you would relate to,” and I literally call them. I try to keep managers out of this and get directly to the artist, person to person.
Have any of the collaborations particularly surprised you?
Every show is a surprise. They are all memorable, that’s what I love about the show. Every show is my favorite in a different way.
How did you get interested in renovating houses?
I’ve always been interested in antique architecture. I grew up in an historical area with old houses. My family owned and lived in historical houses, and they were also craftsmen. My grandfather was a stonemason, a brick chimney-maker and a sculptor, and did a lot of work on houses. My father built houses, including his own. So I’ve always been around construction sites.
This may be a corny question, but is there anything similar about that and songwriting?
That’s not a corny question at all—in fact, it’s absolutely true. I find a house-building project is very similar. As with any creative project, you get a broad idea, you get a team together and that team executes. You oversee its broad strokes and then pay attention to detail.
JOHN OATES
On this record you wrote with people like Jed Leiber and Bob Mayo. How have you adapted to writing with new collaborators?
It’s one of the most exciting things. Every person you collaborate with brings something different to the table. I’ve worked with a lot of different songwriters, and what I’ve found is it’s almost like therapy. You have to open up to another individual, and another individual has to open up to you. I think there has to be a lot of trust, because you have to feel that no idea is too stupid to throw out there on the table. Even if the idea sucks, it may lead to a thought process from the other person that could take you somewhere else. You also have to have a musical rapport. At least you have to be coming from the same place in terms of the direction of the song.
How did you get involved with the musical community in Nashville, where the new album was recorded?
In the early ’90s, Daryl and I weren’t touring very much. I was working with a guy named Jerry Lynn Williams, who passed away recently. He was one of the great American songwriters as far as I’m concerned—the beauty of how he could communicate an idea in a very simple way, that was just so on the money and so soulful. Jerry introduced me to a couple of publishers in Nashville and they asked if I wanted to come down and write. I learned a lot about the business of songwriting and how it works in Nashville, the agendas that artists and publishers have.
I had this misconception that I was writing country songs. But then I realized that they weren’t country songs, they were just John Oates songs. They were very personal, and I thought I had missed the target. In retrospect, I had really hit the target in a big way. One of the songs on the new album, “I Found Love,” I wrote in ’93 when I was getting ready to marry my wife. That song was so real and so personal. When I resurrected it this past year and looked at it again, I went, “Wow, that’s like an autobiography. No wonder no country artist picked it up—no one could sing it except for me.” It was one of those things where sometimes you don’t really know what you a

My mom has always been a big believer in encouraging musical creativity. I took some guitar lessons as a kid and played drums in a band in high school. I've tinkered around with a cheap Fender Squier guitar, learning chords and basic songs.
I played several acoustic guitar models in a sound room at Guitar Center and found that I really prefer the sound of the Taylors. I had no idea that I would be the owner of such a finely crafted guitar so soon. Thanks mom and dad.

Just Because Your Star Shines Bright, Doesn't Mean My Star Doesn't Shine
I don't normally photograph people, but something about this gentleman playing the saxophone for money in front of Fishbone's in Greektown inspired me. Instantly the line by Billy Bragg ( "Just because you're better than me, doesn't mean I'm lazy" ) popped in my head. So many people walked by him, without even giving him a second glance ( or any loose change ) . He was trying everything, impressive scales, the theme to Sanford and Son, etc. There was a chill in the air and people just ignored him to get to the casino quicker. It made me realize how quickly we can make a judgement about someone. For all you know, he could be going to Wayne State University to complete his doctorate and just wanted to make some extra money. All we are saying, is give people a chance....

Willie Nelson's guitar "Trigger" [Explored 11/15/11, #495]
In 1969, the Baldwin company gave Nelson an amplifier and a three-cord pickup electric guitar, that Nelson played with such intensity he broke it. He sent it to be repaired in Nashville by Shot Jackson, who told Nelson that the damage was too great. Jackson offered him a Martin N-20 nylon-string acoustic and, at Nelson's request, moved the pickup to the Martin. Nelson purchased the guitar unseen for $750 and named it after Roy Rogers' horse "Trigger". The next year Nelson rescued the guitar from his burning ranch.
Constant strumming with a guitar pick over the decades has worn a large sweeping hole into the guitar's body near the sound hole—the N-20 has no pick-guard since classical guitars are meant to be played fingerstyle instead of with picks. Its soundboard has been signed by over a hundred of Nelson's friends and associates, ranging from fellow musicians to lawyers and football coaches. In 1991, during his process with the IRS, Nelson was worried that Trigger could be auctioned off, stating: "When Trigger goes, I'll quit". He asked his daughter, Lana, to take the guitar from the studio before any IRS agent got there, and bring it to him on Maui. Nelson then hid the guitar in his manager's house until his debt was paid in 1993. (Wikipedia)

I was named after a song:
Sweet Lady Genevieve - The Kinks
Once under a scarlet sky I told you never ending lies,
But they were the words of a drunken vagabond
Who knew very well he would break your heart before long
Oh forgive me Genevieve.
Now I've come back to see Sweet Lady Genevieve,
This time I'll give you some security
And I will make promises I can keep
So will you come back to me Sweet Lady Genevieve.
Let me rock you, hold you,
Take you in my arms.
Forgive me, please,
Smile away all your sadness, put your trust in me.
Oh if you come back to me Sweet Lady Genevieve,
I'm not the impetuous fool you used to know
I know that I used you and I hurt you so,
But that was so long ago Sweet Lady Genevieve.
Oh, love me,
Take me in your arms.
Let me rock you, hold you,
Smile away all your sadness, put your trust in me.
Once under a starry sky I led you on and told you lies
Drank too much whiskey on that hot summer night.
I acted so slyly because you were acting so shy,
Oh forgive me Genevieve.
If you come back to me Sweet Lady Genevieve,
You're not the child who smiled so innocently
And I'm not the rogue that I used to be,
So will you come back to me Sweet Lady Genevieve.
Oh Genevieve, Oh Genevieve.

The Wings of the Dove
I finally finished reading Henry James's "The Wings of the Dove" this evening. I started it in November last year, but half way through had a break for other, less heavy-going books. I started it again from the beginning a couple of weeks ago, reading, and also listening to it. That's something I do with more 'difficult' books- effectively it means I read the book twice over, which is very rewarding.
I did enjoy the Henry James, though the rather convoluted prose can be hard work. Nor just the prose, but the way he hints rather than states things directly. And the focus is very much about what goes on under the surface of relatonships, rather than what actually happens. Fascinating- but hard going. James seems to have recognised this himself- he advised one of his readers to take "The Ambassadors " slowly, at about 5 pages a day.
The Borges is a very refreshing change- short pieces, of a page or so each, about mythological animals. It's a bit like a medieval Bestiary, a dizzying tour of the classics, Arabian Nights, forgotten Renaissance writers, Icelandic myth and the ramblings of assorted mystics and visionaries. Borges makes a superb erudite and gently ironic tour guide.
