The Science Center at Swarthmore College has these in all the restrooms. There are no paper towels availabe. Typical of dryers like this, signage claims that there is a cost savings over using paper towels, and that there substantially less paper pollution.

The lack of paper trash is of course absolutely true, and I'm sure it's also true that there is an energy savings over the electrical costs of producing and supplying paper towels. But I think the source of the energy savings is because students don't _use_ the dryers (the vented air can warm up the water on your hands, but it takes about 2 minutes to get fully dried). I would estimate that only 5% of students now wash their hands after using the restroom. And, of course, all the bathrooms are designed such that you have to use your hands to open the door to exit, so it doesn't really _matter_ whether you wash your hands! Moronic building design. The end result is that bathroom facilities are substantially _less_ sanitary than those that have paper towels. (Hospitals, by the way, promote the use of paper towels so that people can open the door with the paper towel; trash cans for the towels are therefore also on the _outside_ of the restroom.)

And since it's the Science Center, and I'm a scientist, I just want to mention that the temperature of the air is actually _perfect_ for getting a culture of bacteria kick started. If the air doesn't hurt and blister, it's not hot enough to be sanitizing.

So the net result is that students transfer all their diseases to each other, and go off to their rooms and use huge boxes of bleached-white tissues on their runny noses.

As an aside, if you are going to design a label that gets slapped onto millions of dryers worldwide, for the love of God hire an editor to check it over. The label on the one pictured is redundant, repeats itself, and says things in the same way multiple times. Drives me crazy every time I look at it.

For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for compressed air and gas dryers and centralized automatic lubricating systems for pneumatic fluid power systems.
