Scratch is visiting for the weekend Scratch is a ten month old orange tabby male that found us a few months back when his parents were on vacation and he was left outside. His next door neighbor was making sure he had food. It took a few weeks before we were able to locate his home but were finally able to send him back home with his family. Since then Scratch visits us almost every day. This week Scratch's mom took us up on our offer to care for Scratch while they are gone camping for weekend. This morning Sheila brought Scratch over so he knows he has her blessing to be here this weekend. Scratch has stayed close to our house all day like he knows exactly what is going on. These photos were shot during one of Scratch’s recent visits. Scratched Door Scratched red door in Southern Spain, taken with an Olympus OM-1 and printed for my degree show. J0231290025 The winning schools of An Taisce Green Schools Energy Project sponsored by ESB Electric Ireland were announced at an event in Tailors Hall, Dublin today attended by Minister of State for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Fergus O’Dowd. The overall winner was St. Catherine’s Senior Girls’ School in Cabra, who partnered with their catering company, Glanmore Foods to consider how the business could improve energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint. The young students, aged between 7 and 12, from St. Catherine’s Senior Girls’ School conducted a site visit and energy efficiency audit at Glanmore Foods and proposed a range energy-efficient suggestions including: turning appliances off standby, changing to CFL light bulbs where possible, turning machines off when not in use in the factory and encouraging staff to walk and cycle to work. Furthermore, the girls calculated that the school used 15,170 plastic water bottles each year, which they felt was wasteful, so together with Glanmore Foods they considered some energy efficient alternatives and are now fitting water filters in each classroom. This has resulted in a reduction of bottle usage to 189 per year, leading to a massive energy saving as the bottles no longer need to be produced or recycled. In recognition of their creative solutions, the school was awarded the top prize of €4,000 by Susan Kinane, Business Markets Manager, ESB Electric Ireland. An Taisce Green-Schools Energy Project sponsored by ESB Electric Ireland is a schools initiative that educates young people about the benefits of energy efficiency. The project is targeted at national schools that are already in the An Taisce’s “Green Flag” programme and brings local businesses and schools together to demonstrate the practical application of energy efficiency. This year saw schools from all over the country partnering with local business, such as Colgate Palmolive and the Nenagh Guardian, to develop projects illustrating the practical application of energy efficiency. Speaking at the prize giving ceremony Susan Kinane of ESB Electric Ireland said: “ESB Electric Ireland is committed to working with businesses and households to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste. The ease with which the companies were able to adapt to the children’s energy conservation suggestions demonstrates how simple improving a business’s energy usage can be. Each year we see that young people have the creativity and determination to seek solutions that will enhance how we consume electricity. I would like to congratulate all of the students that submitted projects this year; the standard was very high and choosing an overall winner was a difficult task. Minister of State, Fergus O’Dowd said: “Energy awareness is critically important in today’s world, and giving young people an understanding of energy efficiency and conservation is an important aspect of their education. I would like to congratulate the work done by An Taisce through the Green Flag programme in making learning about energy and environmental protection both interesting and relevant. I would also like to commend ESB Electric Ireland as without the support of big-business, projects like this do not happen. I would like to congratulate all of the schools who submitted projects and indeed the businesses that worked with them – in these times energy efficiency also means reduced cost for business and so it is something that is relevant to everyone.” Speaking at the event, Patricia Oliver, Director, An Taisce said: ““Yet again the innovative ideas of our Green-Schools students have resulted in positive actions that make a real difference to our environment. The ESB Electric Ireland Green-Schools Energy Project gives the students an opportunity to affect change in their wider community. Our research shows that the 2040 schools working on the Energy theme have reduced their energy costs by on average 22% - resulting in cost savings of €2,400 per school per year. This suggests savings of over €5million in energy costs made by schools with Green Flags in Ireland. The hard work, support and dedication of our schools and our sponsors make the huge success of the programme possible” Sheila Ryan, a teacher at St. Catherine’s Senior Girls’ School said of the project: “Saint Catherine’s Senior School is a DEIS Band 1 School and it was great to see the children taking part in such a valuable learning experience. The response by Glanmore Foods was so positive and really boosted the children’s self esteem. We are planning on re-visiting the factory to see the changes in real life over the next couple of weeks.” Runners-up and winners of a €2000 Sustainability Fund, were •St. Thomas’ S.N.S., Jobstown, Tallaght, Dublin 24 who partnered Colgate-Palmolive •The Monastery School, Tipperary Town who partnered with Tipperary Co-Op •CBS Primary School, Nenagh, Co. program airplanes flying straight to the recycle bin if you're hemming and hawing over where to put your wedding money, just remember this picture if you're considering selling the farm for things like wedding programs... if you're opting not to make your own invitations, one piece of advice i found was to get one fancy set for a keepsake [if you ask, some folks will do the proof in the fancy stuff], then do the rest in a more cost-effective manner. eg. get one letterpressed or engraved invitation and have the rest thermographed or flat printed. the (approximate) 50% savings are staggering and just as nice. we designed our programs, had them printed up at the local print shop, then gathered a trusty sweatshop to assemble them. i think the total cost of printing and cutting 100 programs in half was around... $8? i checked out a DIY wedding website for ideas on how to do them, and if i remember correctly, they were charging around $2.50 per program--the package included the two pieces of fancy paper with the program info on them and a wood stick to glue in the middle, but you still had to assemble them yourself. pretty much, no matter how gorgeous the majority of paper goods you cash out on may be, they're going to end up in the recycle bin. Consumer sentiment ticked up in March and it appears businesses are feeling more positive as well. According to a CEO Economic Outlook Survey, America’s top CEOs are expecting an increase in sales, along with increased or stabilized capital spending and employment. Over the past several months, the hot topic of health care reform took much of Congress’s attention. Now, with the bill passed into law, the government is turning its attention to other matters to help bolster the economy including the job bill and financial reform. High unemployment and elevated levels of foreclosures and distressed homeowners continue to be two of the biggest factors in preventing a robust recovery. The government’s attentive attitude toward these obstacles is seen as a positive sign by industry and economic experts. The Housing Market Existing Home Sales Existing home sales softened in February. According to Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, the widespread winter storms during the month may have masked underlying demand as “buyers couldn’t get out to look at homes in some areas and that should negatively impact near-term contract activity.” February sales of 5.02 million remained 7 percent above the 4.69 million-units last year. Median Home Price The median price for an existing home was $165,100 in February, a 1.8 percent drop from February 2009. Distressed homes, which accounted for 35 percent of sales last month, continued to skew prices downward as they typically were discounted in comparison with non-distressed homes. Inventory Total housing inventory rose 9.5 percent to 3.59 million, representing an 8.6-month supply at the current sales pace. Compared to the previous year, there were 5.5 percent fewer homes on the market. Mortgage Rates Mortgage rates dipped to 4.99 percent in February from 5.03 percent in January. During the first week of April, rates crossed the 5 percent threshold but still remained near historically low levels. While the full effect of the Federal Reserve mortgage-backed securities purchase program’s expiration at the end of March is yet to be seen, the Fed echoed its accommodating policy to support the economy. Affordability Affordability remains at record levels, supported by the lowest mortgage rates in decades, low home prices, and the first-time home buyer tax credit. The home price-to-income ratio continues to remain well below the historical average of 25 percent. The ratio now stands at 14.2 percent. Sources: National Association of Realtors, Freddie Mac Government Action Mortgage Relief for Unemployed Attempting to overhaul its foreclosure prevention program, the Obama administration took noteworthy steps to help the unemployed stay current on their mortgage through tough times. While the trouble in the housing market stemmed originally started with loose lending practices, high unemployment and underwater homeowners are now the major factors contributing to foreclosure. The program will now: Require lenders to “slash” payments for the unemployed for 3-6 months. In some cases, payments could be deferred entirely. Cut payments to at least 31 percent of previous income, about the same amount that unemployment insurance pays. Become effective over the next 6 months. Not require new taxpayer funds. The program has only used a small portion of its $75 billion allocation. Source: The Washington Post Helping Underwater Homeowners Underwater borrowers are one of the major driving forces behind foreclosure. It’s estimated that one in four homeowners owes more than their home is worth. Economists categorize these borrowers as “high risk” because they can’t sell or refinance. The government is taking the following steps to address underwater borrowers: Principal Reduction. Lenders will be asked to reduce the principal loan balance if it is 15 percent or greater than what the home is worth. This will only be available to borrowers who are current on their mortgage payments and they will need to stay current to “earn” the full reduction over three years. FHA Refinancing. I know that I'm a kitchen appliance lover, but this might put me into the whore category. We make a lot of Hulk Smoothies (spinach, apples, water), so that's how I justified it. 1974 Fame shower "2nd Series" The final design configuration of the "2nd Series" shower from Fame. Whatever could be its version along its production, it always have had the same size, which was exactly the same of the Lorenzetti shower, so it has about 5.5" of height x 5" of diameter, its upper cover has about 4.5" of diameter and the maximum diameter (clamp) is 6", but unlike the Lorenzetti shower, this one made by Fame is quite heavy and required a strong pipe to stand it... if you ever saw some electric shower installed in pipes with a cord or a wire from the roof attached to the pipe, it means that there was one of this shower installed there in the past... This guy was a best seller and like the shower from Lorenzetti, it was one of the most popular electric shower in the 70's. Believe it or not, people used to give it as a wedding present! Well, if an electric shower itself can be scary enough for non-brazilian people, seeing this specific model working may sound terrifying, the coil heater support is made of a big and solid piece of ceramic and it amplifies the ressonance of the water when the coil heater is working and it sounds like a high voltage arc light, someting very unfriendly for a device that mixes energy with water in a metallic recipient... Anyway, this is one of the most long lasting shower ever made and with it Fame get a great position in sales of electric showers in the 70's. 1974 Fame shower "2nd Series" The final design configuration of the "2nd Series" shower from Fame.
