Labour-saving electrical appliances were used in more and more homes. At the beginning of the decade, a quater of the houses had access to an electrical supply and, even though the national grid was complete in 1934, only half had electricity by 1939. The telephone ws used in most business offices, but was far less common in the home.
The cinema now offered 'talkies' and cigarette cards of film starts were a popular subject to collect. Mickey Mouse mania abounded. The game of Monopoly arrived in 1936. Radio was an established part of daily life, boradcasting news and shows like 'The Crazy Gang' and 'Band Wagon'.
A wave of new chocolate treats swept through the sweet shops during the Thirties - Kit Kat, Mars bars, Rolo, Quality Street and Roses. Sliced bread was a novelty, and crispbread the healthy option to encourage the fashionable pencil thin figure.
