(10) John DeGroot House Port Richmond, Staten Island Constructed c.1870, the John De Groot House is one of only three houses in the Second Empire Style that remain standing on Richmond Terrace between Sailors Snug Harbor and Port Richmond, recalling the period when that thoroughfare was lined with grand houses. John De Groot, the builder of this house, worked for over fifty years for the nearby New York Dyeing and Printing Establishment, a textile dyeing business that was the first and one of the most important early industrial concerns on the island. De Groot was a descendent of a prominent family that had settled on Staten Island around 1730 and intermarried with several of the island's leading families. This house occupies a portion of a tract of land that had been acquired by his grandfather in 1802 and incorporates part of an early vernacular house erected by his father in the 1810s. The front portion of the house, constructed by De Groot c. 1870, comprising a three-story mansarded main block and two-story mansarded dining room wing, is carefully sited to take advantage of the sloping topography. A fine example of the Second Empire Style, it retains its historic form and most of its historic detailing. Notable features, typical of Second Empire style, include the floor length parlor windows and double-door entry, heavy molded cornices and scrolled brackets, and the convex mansard roof that still retains its hexagonal slate shingles and gabled dormers. Convex mansards were less frequently employed than concave or straight sided mansards, and have not survived in great numbers, making this an unusual survivor. Description The John De Groot House is located on a trapezoidal lot that extends about seventy-four feet along Richmond Terrace and about 172 feet along Alaska Street, its eastern boundary. The ground level slopes upward from Richmond Terrace and has been terraced behind a fieldstone retaining wall along the western property line. Non-historic metal post-and-wire fences extend along the northern and eastern property lines. In addition a non-historic wood picket fence extends along the southern property line and eastern edge of the back yard. The house is set at an angle to Richmond Terrace and is set back from the streets. An early-mid twentieth-century concrete stair leads from the sidewalk along Richmond Terrace to a concrete path leading to the front stoop of the house. This entry is no longer in use. At present the house is accessed from a driveway constructed with historic paving blocks (probably an early twentieth century composite material) in the rear side yard of the property facing Alaska Street. A non-historic pathway partially lined with sections of fence leads from the driveway to the side yard and then curves around the house to approach the front stoop. The sections of fence lining the path incorporate historic elements salvaged from other sites but most of these do not appear to permanently affixed. There are also dog runs with non-historic fencing and non-affixed dog houses in both the front and rear yards. None of the sculpture in the yard or the porch is permanently affixed. The house has an irregular plan. It is comprised of a three-story mansarded main block, which is three bays wide and two bays deep, a mansarded two-story plus basement dining room wing, a two-story kitchen-bathroom addition dating from the late 1800s, and an angled ell at the southwest corner of the building that was originally a one-and-a half-story gable-roofed Federal house and was raised to two-stories in the late 1800s. The exterior of the house was modified c.1915 when it changed hands and from the 1970s to 2005 as the present owner has sought to stabilize and restore lost elements to the exterior. The house rests on a brick basement and fieldstone foundation walls which are visible on the west side of the house where the ground level declines sharply. All of the basement window openings have been sealed. The house's upper walls are sheathed with-historic wood shingles that conceal original clapboard siding. The windows have molded wood surrounds. Some windows have historic two-over-two wood sash dating from the 1870s; other windows at the rear of the house retain historic early twentieth-century surrounds and one-over-one wood sash. A number of windows have been replaced with non-historic wood six-over-six wood sash. Most of the windows are protected by non-historic storm windows. The convex mansard roofs on the main block and the dining room wing retain most of their original hexagonal slate shingles and molded metal flashings (The shingles at the northeast corner of the main block have been replaced with non-historic hexagonal shingles). The gabled dormers retain their segmental arch window surrounds and decorative hoods enriched by small eared brackets. [1617] Coles Corner Corner of Fargate & Church Street, Sheffield. John, Thomas and Skelton Cole, described as silk mercers and hosiers etc. opened a store at No 4 Fargate in 1847. The business prospered and a large new drapery store was erected on this site in 1869 designed by local architects Flockton & Abbott. The pavement outside the store became known as 'Coles Corner' and for many generations became a favourite meeting place and landmark in the city. This tradition largely disappeared with the closing of the store in 1963 and its relocation in Barkers Pool. The Cole Brothers, John, Thomas and Skelton, sons of a shoemaker, were born respectively in 1814, 1824 and 1827. The two elder boys were both apprenticed to drapers and by 1847 felt they had enough experience to open their own business, at 4 Fargate. They described themselves as `Silk Mercers and Hosiers` and were soon joined by their younger sibling. The business had expanded considerably, occupying premises in Fargate and Church Street, and the brothers had now become `Silk Mercers, Shawl, Mantle and Carpet Warehousemen, Bonnet Makers and Sewing Machine Agents`. In 1869 rebuilding was begun and was finally completed in 1879. More adjacent property was acquired and rebuilt to match the new shop and two storeys were added to the central portion. Between 1896 and 1902 all three brothers died. They had seen their draper`s shop develop into one of the foremost businesses in the city. `Cole`s Corner` had become a favourite meeting place and the building was one of Sheffield`s best known and well-loved landmarks. In 1898 the business was registered as a limited company and it was the next generation of Cole sons that took the enterprise into the new century. Draperies In some of the (very minimal) paperwork that we received about moving to Okinawa before we arrived, it was mentioned that you should buy curtains and rugs back in the States before you arrive because there aren't many available here. Every shopping trip I've gone on belies that statement ... I can only imagine that they're talking about if you stay on one of the military bases for all your shopping. Red and yellow double border in arrowhead motif. West Indian. When most westerners think of saris, they tend to visualize dazzling gold and silver brocades. It is important to remember however, that brocaded saris represent only a fraction of the larger sari tradition. Indeed, many other kinds of saris have a minimalist simplicity to rival even the most opulent pieces in beauty. This West Indian sari from the collection exemplifies a kind of sari whose the artistry is too often overlooked. Within its simple geometric layout, a black ground accentuates the piece’s bright reds, yellows, and whites. The overall effect is boldly graphic. Less immediately striking, but no less important than the sari’s graphic appeal, is its carefully engineered drape. To create a sari light enough for hot weather, but heavy enough to hang neatly, its dense silk pallu are woven separately, and later joined to a thin cotton body with thickly woven borders. In many cases, a weaver will cover the jagged join between the sari’s pallav and body with a stripe. As in our piece, however, a weaver is just as likely to keep the join visible as testament to his skill. In Western India, saris woven in both cotton and silk are particularly appropriate for weddings, “as they reflect the union of two distinct materials” (1). Because the piece is black, it was probably not a bridal sari, and could have been worn by a wealthy or middle-class woman in everyday life. It is not likely that a respectable Russian wife would have posed nude in the late 19th Century, but this is no street walker. She is both young and beautiful. Her hair is expertly (and expensively) coiffed and, in the days before the safety razor had been invented, let alone the lady shave, her underarms have been shaved for her by an expert. Her jewelry is of an Avant Garde design. Her drape seems to be of silk, and in the days before true panchromatic photographic emulsions were generally available was either white, or at the blue end of the spectrum (think of all those blank Victorian skies). The photographer knew his business. The composition accords with the generally accepted rules taught by the art academies. The style is that of the artistic erotic nude, rather than the crude pornographic. The hands are placed so as to better reveal the model's figure, and the device of the hoop both aids this, and makes it less obvious. Strands of silk are delicately teased over her lower body, The black background emphasises the lightness of her skin. She may have been a professional model, a courtesan, or an aristocrat's mistress. I hope that she and her children survived the Revolution and escaped to France or America. Brutus And The Babe Hello Flickr Friends. Well I survived what ever that funk was I had last week. Felt well enough to go chase moose yesterday. A Flickr friend had alerted me to this bull. He had shot him on Saturday and did a heck of a job. It was a serious trail walk and a fairly long bushwhacking. I'm thinking 6-7 miles round trip. I know it takes me 2 hours each direction on the main trail. About 2/3rds of the way out I could see this guys rack shining like the full moon in a clear sky. He was laying down right against some Mountain Hemlock in the shade of course. It was so pretty for a while. From the place I first was him it was still ? of a mile to the bridge across a good size creek. Made that as quickly as I could but I kept stopping to look at him. He was probably 500 yards across the valley but his rack was visible 90% of the time. Anyway I make it to the bridge and up the trail a bit and cut back down the valley bushwhacking now. About knee high willows and of course lots of wet. Made it to a lone Hemlock which was my guide and there he was. Laying down with basically just his rack showing. You know I had to shoot the rack some. As I was didling around trying to get where I could see more than his rack a cow jumped up about 20 feet from me. Reminder Doug don't get so focused yer not surveying the surrounding area. She was a little pissie so I backed up to my Hemlock. Without it I was naked in New York. That bit of flurry got Brutus up for just 2-3 minutes. So I shot for all I was worth. Very tough shooting as he was against very dark green and his horns are so white that trying to find a shutter speed is not so easy. Anyway as I said 2-3 minutes and he flopped his big self down again and fell asleep resting on his nose then laid out flat resting on his rack. I know this rack has to be 75-100 pounds. I have wondered many times if they look forward to the rut completing so they can drop all that weight till next year. Now that would kinda make them think like humans right. Dont think so. The cow had laid down again through all of this. Was glad I could take my eye of her. Brutus would roll his head around and fall back to sleep. BTY when he was sleeping on his nose I could hear him breath. I backed up into the Hemlock and found a way to sit down, A little prickly but had to get off my feet a bit. Had a bottle of water ate some peanut butter crackers and relaxed as best I could. Three hours and 17 minutes later he finally stood up as did the cow. Shoot shoot shoot. Of course by then the clouds had thickened so light wasn't great. She wandered away fairly quickly and one he realized she was moving away from him he went after her. She would stop and feed he would stop and watch. Shoot Shoot Shoot. ;) As I was watching them go they were sinking a foot or so into the tundra and mud. Decided I would not follow. So headed back to the truck. A bit over 2 hours in light rain most of the way. So I had left the truck at 7 and didn't get back until 4:20. On the way out I did see a sow Griz and 3 cubs eating berries on the mountains across the valley. I had seen bear scat along the trail here and there. Brutus is master of the mountain right now. Its still a week or so before the big gathering happens and then we we will see. I'm glad to report that I actually feel good today but there just isn't enough light to go play in the woods. She is a real friend from the Lord and is a picture to me of how much God cares about the details of my life. San Francisco Federal Building Photo taken during tour of the San Francisco Federal Building by Morphosis / Thom Mayne. This building opened in 2007 and is considered to be one of the greenest buildings in the city. This office building has operable windows (no air conditioning), has lots of natural light, and a system of shading devices to control heat gain. Office Window Shade still like the shade device, but it keeps getting stuck. it slides either way. now i'm on a mission to find some fabric to make a curtain in front of it. i have NO CLUE what i'm looking for.
