Alice in Wonderland was the theme yesterday. And it could’ve quite easily have been wonderland, but instead it was a day both good and bad, which started off with having to wake up after 3 hours sleep.
A slow journey on the Metropolitan Line yesterday ended up being one of the factors to make me late for a doctor’s appointment I’d been waiting weeks for. To add insult to injury, I had to endure an iBus-infected smelly metal thing on wheels, which crawled through the daytime traffic and then stalled to a halt on the approach to the Barking road when we got stuck behind a hearse. A hearse.
A bloody hearse.
I get to the doctor’s surgery about 15 minutes late and no sooner had I walked in through the front door and my name was called to see the most miserable doctor alive in Room 6. There was no time to turn off my iPod, which was blaring out some power metal, and when I walked into the tiny room, my playlist had started the next track.
Before the song was even finished I was dismissed from the doctor’s with a in hand (for something I stated wouldn’t work – and it doesn’t), not even being allowed to mention my other ailments at the time (which include some sort of neck muscle strain, a possible trapped nerve and a respiratory problem) and simply being told to book another appointment with somebody else (this was just regarding my asthma – he wouldn’t even look at anything else I had). I left the surgery bewildered (and my iPod was still playing – and just ending that track that had started playing when I’d walked into Room 6). Cue angry face.
Somewhat peeved, I decided to move onto the next activity for the day, which involved me having to make my way to North Greenwich and get picked up by one of my friends in his car as we were going to somewhere in Kent he knew for a country pub lunch, but this was not without its hiccups; like a close head-on collision we had on a winding country road, and me pointing out omens like a police car already involved in a crash along the way and a fire engine somewhere else. To cap it all off, an ambo (which seemed huge as it drove quite close past the window we were sitting next to) decided to make an appearance, something I scoffed at, until I realised the paramedics were now making their way through the pub to attend to something. With my angry face now having dissipated, I cowered in my seat in fear, whilst I tried to eat my beer battered haddock (and ‘frites’) without too much distraction.
Omens aside, the place was quite picturesque – the pub was off the beaten track in some little village somewhere, right next to a little river, which was right next to some huge arsed field full of hairy looking cows that were grazing opposite the window. It was weird for the city girl like me, and whilst all this country living was just a stone’s throw away from where Kenneth lived (some place called Swanley), I wasn’t exactly finding it easy to be told that the nearest Tube station was North Greenwich – which was a good few miles away in another county. It was all quite pleasant though, and the drive (even down to the near-miss accident) reminded me of going out for drives with Mike in a place call Sarratt, which had winding roads and what I called a ‘tree tunnel’ (where the trees on either side of the road reach over and across to each other to form a continuous leafy ‘tunnel roof’ above the road). I had lots of fun pointing out pretty Porsche 911s (there seem to be lots in Kent) on the drive back on the M20 to North Greenwich.
About three hours later, I found myself back at North Greenwich heading onto the train, going towards Hounslow as my Father had told me that him and my Mother would be making a surprise visit to my aunt’s as it was her birthday and because she needed some cheering up (she hasn’t had much luck recently, what with some bastards snatching her banking card off her whilst she was using a cash machine inside a bank). I decide to head straight there as doing so would mean I would get enough time to sit around for a bit before heading home and getting back in time for dinner. So I make the journey I loathe so much via the nightmare that is the Piccadilly Line and then walk the long walk from Hounslow East Station to her house, only to find that nobody is in.
I call up my Father to find out where everybody is and what’s going, and he comes out with something along the lines of 1) nobody is home, so my parents have decided to go out to Oxford Street and 2) they thought I’d call them first before making my way down there (despite the fact I already said that I would go there straight away). Cue annoyed face. They tell me I might as well go home. (More annoyed face appears.)
At the same time, I get a text message about something that more or less crushes my creative world completely. With a tiny rage beginning to bubble its way to the surface, I catch the Route No. 111 back down towards Hounslow East Station,
John Horwood's skeleton Bristol University
John Horwood was convicted of murder in Bristol, England, in 1821.
He was the first person to be hanged at Bristol New Gaol. His skeleton was retained, and most recently was kept hanging in a cupboard at Bristol University with the noose still around its neck.
He was buried alongside his father on 13 April 2011 at 1.30pm, exactly 190 years to the hour after he was hanged.
Horwood was an 18 year old miner from Hanham and the tenth child of Thomas Horwood.
Horwood's relationship with girlfriend Eliza Balsom ended in 1820. In 1821 he saw her with a new boyfriend, and threw a stone which struck her on the temple. The stone only caused minor injury, but she was treated at the Bristol Royal Infirmary for a depressed fracture and Dr Richard Smith decided to operate, causing a fatal abscess, and she died, four days later, on 17 February 1821.
Dr. Smith gave Horwood's name to the police. The trial took place at the Star Inn in Bedminster on 11 April 1821, and Smith testified against him. He was hanged two days later and his body was handed back to Dr. Smith for dissection. Smith also had the body skinned, tanned and used to bind the papers in the case.
This document is now kept in the Bristol Records Office. It is embossed with a gallows motif. The practice of anthropodermic bibliopegy is known to have been practiced since the 17th century, and it was common to use the murderer's skin in this manner during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Smith kept the skeleton at his home until his death, when it was passed to the Bristol Royal Infirmary and later to Bristol University.
The funeral was arranged by Mary Halliwell, the great-great-great-granddaughter of Horwood's brother.
The coffin was draped in velvet and carried on a wheeled bier in the manner of funerals of the period of his death.
Horwood went on trial for murder, was convicted and sentenced to death at the New Gaol in Cumberland Road. In the days leading up to his death he became grateful for the comfort of religion and said:
‘Lord, thou knowest that I did not mean then to take away her life but merely to punish her: though I confess that I had made up my mind, some time or other, to murder her.’

Horwood went to the gallows on Friday, 13th April 1821, three days after his eighteenth birthday. He left behind a verse which was printed and sold on the day of execution. It reads:

MY PREVIOUS TIME HAS BEEN EMPLOYED
IN RIOTING AND MIRTH.
ELIZA, OH ELIZA DEAR!

John Horwood was publicly hanged on top of the prison gatehouse in front of an assembled crowd.
Such was the appeal of these open air executions that some parts of the crowd risked being pushed into the unfenced New Cut river by their sheer weight of numbers.
After the execution, a group of friends and family lay in wait hoping to prevent the conclusion of the boy's sentence - his dissection.
They planned to ambush the cart carrying his body and spirit it away by boat back to his home village of Hanham.
However, the gaol authorities thwarted this plan by delivering the corpse under cover of night to the Bristol Royal Infirmary, where the surgeon Richard Smith carried out the dissection as one of his classes.
Murder's Skin
Horwood's body after the execution was given to a surgeon at Bristol Royal Infirmary to be dissected for the benefit of medical students. The anatomist kept a detailed record of his findings and, after completing his work, had them bound together with a transcript of Horwood's trial.
His flayed skin was taken to a tanner, who turned it into leather for the equivalent of ?1.50. The surgeon, Richard Smith, spent a further ?10 having the book bound and the front cover embossed with the skull and crossbones at each corner. The words Cutis Vera Johannis Horwood ('The Skin of John Horwood') were added in gilt letters.
A book bound with a murderer's skin is on public display for the first time.
For decades the book languished in the infirmary's library before being transferred to the Bristol Record Office, where it has gone on display as an exhibit in the National Archive Awareness Month.
The book, bound in Horwood's skin, which resembles tanned pigskin, is beautifully hand-tooled around the edges and bears a picture of a gallows on the front cover.
Horwood enjoyed the distinction of being the first prisoner to be hanged at the new Cumberland Road gaol (the original was burnt down during the Bristol Riots). The moment he was pronounced dead, Horwood’s body was commandeered by Richard Smith, the surgeon who accused him of the crim

My Love Letter
Dear Lauren,
These words come of ease, something I thought would never happen for as long as space and time was something that existed. I write you this letter out of the kindness of my cold heart, the heart that resides in my chest and could never be thawed even by the surface of the sun that lights your self-serving world. Out of the kindness of my heart I have wrote this to warn you of your fait beneath the manicured lawn your home is perched upon, a lawn which you do not mow, do not care for and rarely bother to notice. A place unworldly like the bed we once shared, but the similarities my dear end there. This place shares no comfort and gives no gratitude; on a good day the suffering is that of your lips being cut from your mouth to ensure they can never say my name again. A place that I spend my eternity dreaming up ways and reasons to ensure your trip to this place of endless torture and turmoil. Six causes and six reasons with six explanations that will last until the end of time.
The countdown begins...
It begins with the number six and your lack of kindness for the people I love, the ones not of blood but of common interest and choice, the friends which I could not live without. You never gave even one of them a chance to prove themselves worthy of your acceptance, but let me tell you the one thing, you never figured out is the tables were turned and they were not in your direction. I saw past those rumors and lies the others whispered, I believed in you for who you really were, but your ignorance never allowed your eyes to do the same.
Just above the scale of number six, weighting in at number five is your lack of trust toward the ones you supposedly love. The reassurances and faithfulness fall on def eyes and ears. The long nights awake in each others arms and phone calls neither of us wanted to end never did anything for your addiction to drama and chaos. I stood at your doorstep for the years we spent together, but you never felt safe and never were able to unlock that door of yours, we grew further apart with every empty excuse that passed your lips. I never meant you one bit of harm, I trusted your every breath with the heart that pumps my blood but your fingers never even touched the knob, you never intended to unlock that door.
Four more left and they just keep getting worse, this one is about the choices you have made. With your lack of common sense you never learned to think for yourself, going along with others and never being able to say no, your life has become a hodge-podge of those around you. You continue to follow the crowd just as a gaggle of birds that fly wondrously about the sky, with no destination, no interest and no true-self you will wander about and end up someone you don’t even know.
The top three, we are now at the bronze metal and taking the cake is your lack of understanding. I wish I could say I was sorry for the way that I am but my imperfections are things that I never was able to choose. With love comes understanding, this goes both ways and I'm sorry to say honey your not perfect either. Compromise I told you is what relationships are all about but you wanted no part of this one sided fairytale. Never relenting, never believing, you never could except that changes had to be made. This sword I'm afraid is tact sharp on both sides and I have bleed my share and wear my scar, but with your ignorance you thought these eyes would never notice the lack of a scab, a brand or even a scar on the skin of your highest. You never thought I would, but sweet heart I noticed.
The moral sins just keep getting better as the numbers get smaller and this one is for the lips that spew the lies that you sell. Continued accounts of our hardships kept on surfacing as this all began to come to a close, but with all these faults in what I saw as stable ground you still preached those three words that I would die for. Lying to my face and into my teary eyes you assured me those words were true, you were the one who taught me talk is cheap but I continued to buy every empty word you sold. Leeching off my pockets sucking blood in the form of dollar signs you never stood by a word you told me, and for that will you pay. This is the receipt for the damage you have caused and cash is not an option.
This is your last strike, the one that will forever solidify your endless decay under the world that revolves beneath your feet. You left me, without one chance to prove myself changed; I gave you so many second changes so many times before. Could you have done the same? Not a chance in this world, a world dictated by the needs of the only one that matters, the queen of the world as we all know it, you. For this one reason and this one reason alone you have earned yourself a front row seat to the freak show below. I gave you everything that I had, I had nothing but my life to give and the least you could have done was to do the same, but no, that door will stay locked forever

Now this was a difficult one.
Those flowers only open up through the day. Early mornings up until around 10:00-11:00 they are closed. And whats worse, that wagon is not really situated in a picturesque area. It's nice but too cluttered.
So I took a number of shots, on the ground looking up, from behind, from the top, skew angles,blant side shots,... anything. I tried a circular polarizer (to lessen the haze and get some blue in the picture) with a cheap Tian Tan square grad filter to darken that washed out sky. Mid-day photos are pretty difficult sometimes.
A surprising number of them worked pretty well but I only upload two here. This one and that washed out photo sepia-like effect...

Big-Budget Film Stunts Shine as 'Lights, Motors, Action!' Revs Up Its Engines for May 2005 Debut

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- High-octane energy explodes on one of the largest stages at Walt Disney World Resort beginning in May 2005 as the Disneyland Resort Paris-inspired "Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show" blazes into Disney-MGM Studios.
Featuring high-flying, gravity-defying automobile, motorcycle and high-speed watercraft stunts, the turbo-powered stage show will immerse park guests in the thrill-a-minute world of big-budget movie stunts.
When it opens, a cast of more than 50 will thrill audiences with pulse-pounding chases featuring automobiles, motorcycles and watercraft. Customized and modified, these vehicles will be piloted by a group of trained drivers throughout the show.
The arena for "Lights, Motors, Action!" -- a 177,000-square-foot facility featuring a Mediterranean village set -- is one of the Florida Vacation Kingdom's largest "stages," allowing stunt drivers to pack more edge-of-your-seat action into the show including high-speed spins, two-wheeled driving, jumps, pyrotechnic explosions, high falls and plenty of surprises created just as they are performed for the silver screen. The 5,000-seat stadium allows guests to see every inch of the non-stop action.
The premise of "Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show" centers around the filming of a spy thriller, with production crew members, stunt managers and a director and assistant director on the "live" set. Using a Tinseltown trick known as shooting "out-of-sequence," the director sets up the different stunts for the audience. After each scene is "filmed," the director then combines the shots to create the completed scene that is played on a giant video wall for the audience.
Other highlights and fast facts of "Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show":
* Construction on the stunt arena began in February 2003. It features a Mediterranean village facade, stunt ramps, pyrotechnic equipment and a man-made canal.
* Audiences will enter through the garage -- or atelier -- as mechanics and technicians finely tune the show vehicles. Six giant windows offer guests behind-the-scenes views. The show will feature more than 40 vehicles on stage and inside the garage area.
* Each vehicle is highly modified to perform the many extreme stunts.
* Vehicles featured include high-performance automobiles, motorcycles and stunt watercraft. Also, "surprise vehicles," including one designed to drive backwards and another designed to split in half.
* Vehicles are designated by color so the audience will always know which is the "hero" vehicle and which is the "chase" vehicle.
* Meticulous planning, practice and timing are dedicated to each stunt. Because of the choreography involved, crew members liken it to a "ballet on wheels."
"Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show" is just one part of "The Happiest Celebration on Earth," an 18-month gala that pays tribute to the 1955 opening of Disney's flagship park, Disneyland.

Vintage Cars Race - London to Brighton
Every year on the first sunday of November a Race with vintage cars leave from London to Brighton.
It is a superb day with so many interesting old cars.
I shot the race not far away from where I live, half way in the the course. By this time many cars are already smoking and making pit stops. It must be a fun day for the racers.
I wasn't so fortunate with photos though. I tried my best but moving cars is not my favourite subject and these ones don't even go that fast..
Todo ano no primeiro domingo de Novembro uma corrida de Carros Antigos acontece em Londres. Os carros dao largada no centro de Londres e se direcionam para Brighton, cidade litoranea ao sul.
E um dia muito divertido e ineressante com tantos carros maravilhosos participando no evento.
Eu fotografei ao meio do percurso e nessa altura muitos deles ja estao fervendo, soltando muita fumaca e fazendo suas paradas.
Nao fui muito felizarda com minhas fotografias. Registrar carros em movimento nao e uma das minhas areas favoritas em fotografia, me deixa nervosa e acabo perdendo tudo, focar e um pesadelo tambem. E olha que esses carrinhos nem tao velozes sao.
Mas com os anos espero me aprimorar e ter menos fotos para mandar para o lixinho.

On Italy there is a vintage car race called "Mille miglia" (traslation: One thousand miles) tha is very folkloristic.
I would like to obtain speed effects with "panning" technique but I made hundreds of shots without any good results :D

This wheel has been in the river in Downtown Estes Park for as long as I can remember. I have been going to Estes every summer for the past 20 years. Right next to this wheel used to be a small magic shop that all the grandchildren used to love to visit.

Recovered Chair
I re-recovered two of the chairs from my dining set. I keep covering them in different fabrics that I never end up liking that much. Right now, of my 6 chairs, they are covered in 4 different fabrics. I think I like this one though. It is from Ikea and it goes well with my other chairs with black vinyl seats and also my ikea black and white triangle rug in the living room.

Light Up Inline Skate Wheels

Motail
Ultralight push stick for inline skating. It weighs 6 pounds with one battery. With one spare 2.4 amp hour battery, it is useful for about 6 miles. When not in use, it is carried instead of towed. For traction, it uses leverage. Static weight on the wheel is not required. As the stick pushes up against my back thigh, counter pressure forces the wheel into the ground.
Modified... Removed the leg hook so the stick can be used in different positions, mainly between my legs like a hobby horse. Might put a plastic horse head on it. Also added a bar that will begin to drag before the stick becomes perpendicular to the ground, to help regulate acceleration and keep the stick under control.
It could be lighter, but as is it is very durable. It definitely could use a better battery. As is, it makes trips to neighborhood stores quick, easy, and fun.
Using the Motial (short for "motorized tail") is fun. It is like being a transformer. I skate along as usual, then put it down into hobby horse position, and ZOOM off I go.

I think I should have added a third light directly behind him, possibly.
