Day 39/365: Lorenzo Laroc

Day 39/365: Lorenzo Laroc

This is Lorenzo Laroc, composer and electric violinist. He was playing this evening in the Grand Central Terminal subway station. A huge crowd had formed around him, and all sorts of people just stopped in their tracks to listen. He was simply fantastic. Emotional and loud electric violin playing on your way home from work is an unexpected delight. To the side of him, out of the picture, is a guy sitting at a table hawking Laroc's CD for $10. I wish I had gotten one.

Socks and Sandals Violin

Socks and Sandals Violin

I ran into this quartet of musical artists playing classical music on the Langestraat in Alkmaar, NL. These guys were amazing, they played like professionals. It stopped everybody in their bored tracks. They all had something in common: socks and sandals. It was about the music, not about the show.

It's Been Too Long (Day 172 /June 29, 2008)

It's Been Too Long (Day 172 /June 29, 2008)

Come to think of it, I hadn't been downtown since last August. It's kind of silly to not go downtown more frequently, since (when there isn't traffic), it only takes 17 minutes to get there from my house.

At least I took the opportunity tonight to go to the Meyerson Music Center to listen to the Metropolitan Winds put on a concert featuring my favourite: film music. Lots of John Williams, of course, but a real treat for me was the opener: James Newton Howard's Grand Canyon Fanfare.

There was one trumpet that was off and a French horn that every once in a while went a little bit astray, but otherwise, the performances were fantastic. And the concert was free--to me, that is. A friend who performs in the ensemble comped me tickets yesterday. She plays bassoon.

I saw a few folks I work with there, and that was fun, too, since I'd pretty much showed up and spent most of my time there alone.

Which is fine. I like mixing my entertainment and my socialisation, but I've come to realise recently that other people suck. I hate trying to make plans with people. Tell me where to be and I'll show up. But I'm tired of trying to work my schedule around everyone else's just to have someone's last minute constraint blow the whole thing out of the water. People are lame. If I want to go see Wanted, I don't want to have to try to figure out what's the best time for everyone or try find a row of seats that'll sit everyone or to show up early to chit chat over the annoying commercials they play before they present the trailers...

The cinema is 2 miles from my house. If I want to see a movie, I just go, no fore planning, no considerations of who can get a babysitter. I just go. The movie theatre is dark and loud anyways. It's not like I'm going to actually socialise during the movie. Although... I do miss the idea of going out for drinks right afterwards, or getting something to eat before. But really. they don't always have to mix. It would have been great to get together with people before or after tonight's concert (I mean.. I did get dressed up and all). But it was nice showing up 20 seconds before they started and then afterwards being able to just wander around the symphony hall and the lobbies enjoying IM Pei's amazing architecture without having anyone else be concerned about me being late or keeping them from doing something they consider interesting.

Juli accused me of enjoying being single, not having any accountability to anybody else, right before we cut things off. I guess in many ways that's true. But I would like to share this all with someone... someone who gets me, who gets what it is about all this that excites me.

But there are too many things to enjoy in life to wait for other people to align themselves with me to be able to do it. Tonight's music was wonderful regardless whether I showed up with someone else or not. I really enjoyed it; and it has been too long.

Common name: Gaillardia Fanfare
Botanical name: Gaillardia 'Fanfare' Family: Asteraceae (Sunflower family)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This recent hybrid of gaillardia or the blanket flower made waves across the U.S. with its eyecatching blooms. The astonishing blooms are packed with mini-trumpet petals on a compact, very free-blooming plant. Absolutely the most distinctive development in Gaillardia's history. Plants form a low mound of light-green leaves, bearing upright stems of large daisy-type flowers. Flowers are almost lacy in appearance. Plants are midsized with a good mounding habit.

Mandolin surgery

Mandolin surgery

I got this mandolin in around 1990 from Cedric's wife and played it a great deal. I'm not that great, but it was always fun to pick out some trad tunes on something so small. It says 'Phantom' on the headstock. Sometime when E was really young she stepped on it and the neck separated from the body. After talking to Aonghus about what to do, I decided to remove the neck entirely, sand lightly and woodglue it back together. I couldn't find a proper 'strap clamp' at Ace hardware so I'm using my canoe strap. The metal clamp is only very lightly tightened to keep the highpart of the fretboard pressed against the body.

While I spent my time at Guitar Center playing everything I could get my hands on, I found this guy, a used celtic mandolin for $30. It's certainly rough around the edges, but I thought it would be fun to learn and to just have it around.

El Rio tan Pocito

El Rio tan Pocito

Fieldton (Hart’s Camp,
where Waylon Jennings was from)
is the reason I knew there was Land that wasn’t Flatter’n Flittered Flapjacks.
A lot of it probably had to do with me being so close to the ground at the time,
and always in it.
Me beside my Big Brother,
in wet sand that squished in between my toes.
Bent over,
Pulling weeds in rows that sloped perty-good down hill in
the Direction of Autumn, and
Into the Wind.
Daddy rented his , I think, first farm there.
It was in the Fringes of the Sand hills.
And away from the Railroad and very remote.
The land Rolled and Eroded abruptly into washes and little gullies,
Deep enough for me to venture into another world.
The irrigation ditches would fill with sand til water wasn’t deep enough
to set the tubes in.
I had orders not to catch the Centipedes,
So I just played with ‘em,
and they never did bite me but my Big Brother said they would.
He was in school,
I remember him coming home with a Frightning Story they’d told him about an ‘A-Bomb big enough to Blow Up the Whole Wide World-Poof!
But it didn’t scare me like it did him.
The house was Big and Square and there were a lot of Wide Steps leading up to the big porch,
Whose roof was an extension to the Pointy house Roof.
A Farm house.
There were Spraddling Trees in the yard all around the house
And in their Shadows it was Cool to feet and the Wandering Spirit of the Wind rested there
And fragrances from afar mingled with those smells who lived there.
A sighing breeze puffed in release of Chasing the Prairie,
There were Barns and sheds tucked all around in the back yard,
‘neath an umbrella of green.
Many chickens.
I climbed all around in the trees,
Watched little birds hatch from eggs.
I’d climb until I was more scared than not more scared,
Then come down without looking at Ground.
------------>>>>>>>>>>>
I was very happy in Fieldton,
and in a way,
Never left that happiness
til my Daddy Broke my nose as I Approached my teens.
That’s when the happy Bubble of childhood Innocence of seeing
Hatred and Temper,
Bursts,
and When I Realised that
Yes!
It is Real,
it has Substance and
Yes!
Temper can Fracture and Kill.
Yes!
Temper is a Manner of Manefest Hatred.

In Defence of it,
I assumed it’s Spirit
And Fostered it’s Posession of me
and it Sufficated the Gentle Childish Nature that,
to that Point had Showered me with the adoration of my Peers,
Family, and the World ,
from which,
to that Point I had Accepted nothing but Love.
It took me fourty years to regain that Nature that blessed my first
Dozen or so years on the Planet.
---------------
Anyhow,
I must have been four,
maybe three?
We were in Fieldton.
Daddy brought home Three Coyote Pups once who were my age,
(though their eyes had barely opened)
and put ‘em in one of those Chicken Crates
that was built with round dowels and thick wire and a sliding door
that fastened with a wire Hook.
They looked like dogs,
sort of,
but only on the outside.
I liked ‘em and visited with them all that Day,
and we got to know one another and
I believe my time with them to be the Greatest milestone in Forging of the freeness of Spirit I’ve enjoyed through much of my life,
and blame them for an awareness that is one of my Greatest Gifted blessings
that has Fueled a Wanderlust from which I have Prayed never to Recover from.
Well,
But that night,
Their Mother Slipped right into the yard,
not even the Dogs knew, or at least, they didn’t Bark.
She Knawed through the Chicken Coop and they were gone when we got up next Mornin.
I was very happy for them,
though I Cried and Cried at their Departure.
They didn’t have to speak English to tell me they didn’t belong in there.
Their visit, and their Mother’s, and their Capture and their escape made me think and think,
and it told me that there was a world out there,
A world other than the one I lived in,
That I’ve learned much of since.

Bimbo was on the Radio all the time,
I used to sing it to my Daddy,
He had a smile that kinda showed sideways through the way he chewed gum.
I remember Him Smiling a lot then.
I used to crawl on my Grandpa’s knee and sing ‘Too old to cut the Mustard
and it always brought the house down.
Life was play and so was work at Fieldton
and for several years that followed.
-
Slim was missing his two front teeth.
I’d hang out and kinda follow him around while he worked.
He was a batchelor Field hand that lived alone and was Always Drunk,
And sang the same old song all the time,
but he was pretty much a little kid himself,
But he was so Big, he had to be an Adult.
One year at Christmas,
we were Visiting some of Daddy’s Kinfolk in Austin
And Slim got caught up in some of the Machine workings of an Irrigation Engine
And we had to go home in the
Middle of the night.
They said if he hadn’t been

Balsa Wood
-
Balsa wood. Light, thin grain, whittles its self.
It hit the hobby shelves about the time Lee Ray got his Pellet Gun,
The kind that was powered by a little co2 cartridge that cost a nickle.
Balsa wood air planes,
a dozen of ‘em,
on the widow walk of the
Water tower beside Gary Franklin’s house.
Each Jet propelled and awaiting test flight.
We had a marvelous time with a couple of good Flights and a lot of cool Crashes.
I made a race cars 8 inches long out of Whittled balsa wood and an erector set,
And used those little cartridges to send ‘em hauling Jet Propelled,
but you had to be a long way from anything,
but those places were easy to find on the Llano.
- -
As for my Favorite Free Flight, Balsa wood and Paper Piper Cub?
Well, our Friend Gary Franklin was into Vikings and it wasn’t Irrigation Season so there was no Water in the Ditches for the Customary And hand Sawn Scrap 2 x 4
With the mast of Popsickle sticks and sail of Construction paper
Designed to send a Fallen Buddy Down Stream and into the Here after

And-
(Gary’s Mother Ruthel’s Old) talkin’ Parakeet? Mitch
(who was aweful quick to pick up Expletives)
had just Died Flat n’ Dead, So!
We Decided to send old Mitch
to Vol Hala Heaven via Air Express Special Delivery.
Yep!
And without the M-80 Finale Since all our Friends had express orders
Not to let M-80s fall into certain hands and the Adults knew better than to sell us any more.
So, we Strapped him aboard Le Ray’s un-Prized Paper Piper Cub,
Climbed the Crumbling stairs (which we weren’t suppose to be near)
To claim a Launching stance on the rotting Widow Walk encircling The Soggy old Water tank beside Gary’s House,
Doused the Plane and Celebrated Bird in Kerosene
And sent it Soaring on a Breeze that Fairly Lifted Plane and Bird briefly, and
old Mitch
Soared into the Sky inside
a Blaze of Radiance to have beheld.
Especially when It Banked Right and,
as if
Mitch had Suddenly Switched Incarnations.
Like a Kamakazi in a Nose Diving Inferno,
Falling,
Falling,
Falling from

Ultimately,

That's A Smokin' Guitar

He sat down next to us and played for about 20 minutes. He was so-so but he and his music melted into the background of beautiful views and street noise making for a wonderful atmosphere. I was able to get four great shots of him sitting in my seat!

I offered him sunscreen. He refused. And took my Euro instead.

A Brush With God: An Icon Workbook

A Brush With God: An Icon Workbook

A one-stop guide to icon-painting, including the history and spirituality of icons as well as simplified, step-by-step icon-painting technique. Everything you wanted to know about icons but didn't know where to look. This book, written with warmth and an obvious love for the subject, describes the history of icons and looks at why they've been an important spiritual tool for many centuries. It guides readers through the process of painting an icon, from making the initial sketches to applying the final glaze. The book will offer an easier and more accessible way to approach this art than the traditional - and time-consuming - methods. Also included are eight full-color plates of a selection of the author's icons, templates, and prayers for the blessing of an icon.

Icons and Saints of the Eastern Orthodox Church (A Guide to Imagery)

An icon (from the Greek word "eikon," "image") is a wooden panel painting of a holy person or scene from Orthodox Christianity, the religion of the Byzantine Empire that is practiced today mainly in Greece and Russia. It was believed that these works acted as intermediaries between worshipers and the holy personages they depicted. Their pictorial language is stylized and primarily symbolic, rather than literal and narrative. Indeed, every attitude, pose, and color depicted in an icon has a precise meaning, and their painters--usually monks--followed prescribed models from iconographic manuals.
The goal of this book is to catalogue the vast heritage of images according to iconographic type and subject, from the most ancient at the Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai to those from Greece, Constantinople, and Russia. Chapters focus on the role of icons in the Orthodox liturgy and on common iconic subjects, including the fathers and saints of the Eastern Church and the life of Jesus and his followers. As with other volumes in the Guide to Imagery series, this book includes a wealth of color illustrations in which details are called out for discussion.

Crossing the Line

Crossing The Line is a labor of love. It's about two guys having fun, adding totally free improvistions between several selections. Larry Combs and Eddie Daniels are legendary masters of their craft. Combs, aside from being one of the best orchestral clarinetists in the world, is a fine jazz player. He played with Chuck Mangione before joining the Chicago Symphony.
From "Ponchielli," (featuring the Chicago String Quintet) and the Pleyel duets to Gordon Goodwin's "Leblanc Suite" and William O. Smith's "Jazz Fantasy" this is a serious musical joyride!

song of pain

song of pain

passion volume iv
view in lightbox please & will be taking a hiatus until may 19th (when my last IB exam is over)

-

I lifted the laminated book cover so that one of the sharp angles would land softly on my wrist, with that, I drew it over my skin like a violin's bow, and wept a silent tune; no one would ever hear my song of pain. It became a daily routine: I would go back to the library and borrow books with clear crisp edges, then go back home and recite my broken melody all over again to perfection.
There was never blood. I didn’t want there to be. I was afraid, I knew that if I saw that bright red line, it would be real. Too real. Then I would have to admit to myself that this was getting too far, that maybe it was time to stop. If there was blood, there would have to be healing, and a scar, and I was scared. What if I couldn’t heal, like I was suppose to? What if I would always be caught in this trance, in this solitude of hurt? What if things won’t ever get better? What if.
So I never pressed too hard, but I never pressed too light either. It was like Goldilocks testing the bears’ porridge. Not too hot, not too cold, it had to be just right. There were never permanent marks, it was always the same faint white lines. Like a barcode patterned to recognize my hurt.
People say the best moment when they cut themselves is feeling that sweet release, feeling free, feeling invincible. But that’s not what it’s like for me. The best moment is when I watch those clean white lines fade to nothing, self-erasing all the evidence of hurt. That’s my sweet release. Because at that moment, I believe, that perhaps like those fading lines, my pain and hurt will melt away themselves. That perhaps, my pain is only temporary. That maybe, it really will be okay.

    soprano sax
  • The soprano saxophone is a variety of the saxophone, a woodwind instrument, invented in 1840. The soprano is the third smallest member of the saxophone family, which consists (from smallest to largest) of the Soprillo, sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass, contrabass and tubax.

  • Soprano Sax (also released as Soprano Today) is the debut album by Steve Lacy which was released on the Prestige label in 1958. It features performances by Lacy, Wynton Kelly, Buell Neidlinger and Dennis Charles.

    mark vi
  • The Mark VI was a British heavy tank project from the First World War.

The Bentley Mark VI was the first post-war luxury car from Bentley. Produced from 1946 to 1952, it was also the first car from Rolls-Royce with factory coachwork but chassis were still also supplied

The Bentley Mark VI was the first post-war luxury car from Bentley. Produced from 1946 to 1952, it was also the first car from Rolls-Royce with factory coachwork but chassis were still also supplied

The Mark VI used an F-head straight-6 engine 4.3 L (4257 cc/259 in?) in size. In 1951, a 4.6 L (4566 cc/278 in?) version of the engine was introduced. A four speed syncromesh manual transmission was fitted with the change lever to the right of the driver on right hand drive cars and on the column on left hand drive versions. The 4.3 L was referred to as the 4? L with a single exhaust and the 4.6 L as the 4? L with a twin exhaust.

The Mark VI was introduced at a time of steel shortage across Europe which translated into a desperate shortage of new cars for sale on the UK market. A Used Car report in 1951 of a three year old example with 10,450 miles (16,815 kilometers) on the odometer noted that a car which had, when new, retailed for ?4,038 including sales taxes, was now offered for sale at ?5,335. This was seen as a comment on the quality of the car but also on the continuing shortage of cars for sale.
