Mazourka Canyon, with the Inyo Mountains to the east (right). Owens Valley is along the left side of this image; the town of Independence is out of view to the bottom left. A string of sag ponds is visible where the Owens Valley fault ruptured in 1872 in one of California's largest historic earthquakes. Aerial view to the north from a commercial airplane.
The lower center section of the image covers the area where I had my 'summer field' geology class. Daytime temperatures in this, the lowest of all the assigned areas, averaged about 100 to 105°F.
