Crossing in Traffic Hanoi Early morning in the market of Hanoi, men and women carried heavy loads draped across their shoulders with bamboo poles. They develop a rhythm to their gait which stabilizes the load and shares is evenly across their back. However when they encounter the modern impediment of heavy traffic, they must stop and adjust to a different beat - the fast moving autos, the slower motor bikes and the slow bicycles all weaving along the road. Somehow they are able to anticipate where the holes will be that allow them to cross far ahead of their traffic and time their crossing to this anticipated path. There are no traffic controls or walk don't walk signals, just their experience. Once in a while the task is too complex and like this woman, the load carrier rest their load temporarily on the curb before moving on. Busy Switcher Amtrak switcher 514, a GE Dash 8 from the early 1990's, busies itself forming a huge 30 car Auto-train at Sanford FL, on 9th March 2009. The Auto-train is Amtrak's take on the British motorail concept, and conveys passengers and their cars/suv's/bikes between Lorton VA, just to the south of Washington and Sanford, just to the north of Orlando, FL. Judging by the 19 car carriers and 11 passenger cars, it's pretty popular.
