Holiday Lights and Night Hockey on Lake Wingra

Holiday Lights and Night Hockey on Lake Wingra

If you drove along Monroe Street last night and looked down Knickerbocker toward Lake Wingra, you would have seen these lights that appeared magically on the lake along Wingra Park. A group of friends have been doing this for several years now. They get together during the holidays, set up lights and a generator, shovel out a rink, and play several pickup hockey games over the course of the holidays on frozen Lake Wingra. With benches along the shore and a fire in the grill, it all has a magical, improvised, old-fashioned quality. When the holidays are over, the lights -- like holiday lights everywhere -- are packed up and put away until next year.

my jersey for my current team on top of my packed bag.

...but I'm not playing in our game tonight thanks to the stitches in my heel. I tried on my skate last night but it pulled and tugged on the stitches such that I accidentally ripped the skin a bit. I'm pretty bummed about not playing tonight but it sounds like we got a few subs so we at least shouldn't be short benched.

Still, I feel like I was SO CLOSE to scoring the past two games and was hoping tonight would be the night. Ah well. Hope the team scores our first goal tonight anyway. ;)

This is the second time I have coerced a model's escort into posing for the tarot deck as well. And once again I am pretty pleased with the result. Kenny looks great with a black eye, I think. I'm starting to really like this high detail, desaturated 300 effect I am using lately. Originally the staff cards were going to be high saturation, but I think the grainy look suits them better. It makes a nice contrast to the sword cards I think.

Hockey Monument

As the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs are currently underway, I thought I'd show this picture I took the other day while walking by the Hockey Hall of Fame. This monument is in the front of the Front St. side of the building, and is very popular. Even in the short amount of time I spent in there, I saw three families lining up to take their pictures next to it. The must have been tourists, however, because I don't think any Torontonians are very happy with the game at the moment, given that our team didn't make the playoffs this year.

We were supposed to drive to Buffalo to take in Garden Walk, which features the up-and-coming star garden of the city (i.e. our friend Kate's lovingly-tended flower beds) but bad weather up there caused us all to agree to postpone the trip until, well, until hockey season. Heh. We're all so predictable. Anyway, I still took the day off in order to let the mattress guys in. I was actually excited that I had to be up before 8 am on a vacation day because I thought, "Yay! I can shoot the sunflower in fabulous morning light!" Then I woke up and discovered the sky was gray and overcast. Shuckydarns. Of course, it turned out alright because this picture has me and Schnookie both squealing with delight over the Septemberness of it all. Judging by the feel of this picture, hockey season and its newer, better trip to Buffalo can't be far off!

Kind of neat shot I tried for awhile to get one like this. The photo was actually taken during my son's 2005/06 season, the little fella with his back to us was on our team. These were both local youth hockey teams here in Kennewick, WA
