Day 90: the Big Nine O: el Natural During my first 90 days of 365 I have made many many friends, and have watched many of them blossom as people and photographers. On of the things I have noticed is how "free" they seem to get once they step out of the norm for them. Whether it is showing a little more leg or even a pantie shot - they seem to grow more after that. Sometimes it is as simple as going with out make-up for a shot...thinking it is the worst thing at the time...but later they seem to gain confidence in themselves. In honor of so many of my flickrite friends going "with out" (and to be honest to poke a little fun at the whole thing) I present to you...el Natural William. Thats right folks...no make up, no eyeliner...not even a little base. No product of any kind. No hair goop at all. As I have mentioned before - I am not USED to having hair. So I am pretty "kooky" about it...Not really sure about it..and if I don't have product in - I usually wear a hat. Today...I I felt my hair had reached a point where I am actually liking it. and with out any stuff in it...It is free to curl up on its own. ok...I have rambled on long enuf. "Uh yeah hi, is my stylist in? Great, could you ask her if 'mango cherry breeze' or 'island mist essence' would be better for my hair?" Maybe my camera is shy in public. THAT might explain that weird yellow tent it almost always insists on putting in every photo I take there. I don't have that trouble going to Randall's… maybe I should insist on more shopping there. Also, I've noticed this shot in particular is found by searching "barefoot" a lot. I know she IS barefoot in it. But you can hardly tell. I wanted some kind of blue or white outfit to go with the makeup but I didn't have any, so had to make do with using bright red instead (but I think it still works, I think haha). Then I didn't really have a lot of space to work with and I would have quite liked a full body shot which I could have done but the background wasn't really right. Then afterwards I spent an absolute AGE trying to get that blue eyeliner off my face! It is worse than any permanent marker or anything I have ever come across. My face was really red after scrubbing at it for ages! Despite all that, it was worth it and I'm happy with the results. My cat was bitten by a radioactive cockroach My cat was bitten by a radioactive cockroach. That really is the only logical explanation for her transformation the last few years. Just like Spider Man gained his supernatural powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider, she has become the Amazing Cockroach Cat. TC (named after "True Colors", the Cindy Lauper tune) is going on 20 years old now. I'm considering changing her name to Skeletor. It has been almost three years since she was diagnosed with a hyperactive thyroid problem requiring pills and tests and surgery and all kinds of indignities for the rest of her life. After having gone down that road with a puppy that did not survive long anyway, I decided she had lived a long life and I'd simply spoil her, feed her good, spare her the daily medical regime and give her the most comfortable senior years possible. Again, that was almost three years ago. That must be fairly close to when she was bitten. The first of her cockroach powers appeared shortly after when she began to transform from my neat, fussy, tidy cat into a creature that can tolerate -- no thrive -- in all manner of filth. She pretty much stopped cleaning herself. Her feet stink, she usually trails dingleberries, has a constant secretion of goo coming from her eyes and keeps a perpetual hunk of dried cat food clinging to her nose. I no longer have a small out-of-the way liter box discretely available for her use, but an entire room covered with a tarp and three big litter boxes hoping one might appeal to her. And once in a while one does. The second cockroach power TC developed was an insect-like bony exoskeleton. Petting her is like touching some kind of tiny crooked, hardened washboard with a tail. She has weighed less than three pounds for over a year, consuming three tins of cat food and a cup of half-and-half a day. Each night she selects a new location to vomit about three quarters of that, which I usually discover in the morning before I get my shoes on. The third cockroach power she has gained of course, is that she will never die. I've taken her to the vet several times wondering if she is suffering, but she seems to still be hanging in there enjoying her new cockroach life. She's actually become far more affectionate now than in any of her previous 16 years as a cat, purring and climbing on my lap and doing her best stinky cockroach-cute impression. I can't help thinking that is just her reaction to knowing how much I'd like to get new carpet though. Anyway, here's my TC after one of her baths she must take now, drying out in the sun, and planning how to how use her cockroach powers today. 7/12/09 update - I posted this photo over two years ago. My cat passed away shortly after that. She didn't quite make 20 years but had a great life and enjoyed playing and hindfooting with her toys right to the end. I do miss her. Thanks to all of people who empathized with one of the toughest decisions there is to make - how long to let an elderly animal live and when to put it down - especially when you can't talk to a cat to hear its wishes, and even humans have vast differences in how much they want to live or die if in pain. In the end the pills did not seem to do anything and giving them was such an ordeal that we skipped the thyroid medication and just kept taking her to the vet to tell us what to do. Twice we packed her up, said our good-byes and took her into the vet who said she was still hanging in there and no need to kill her yet. Again, its a tough tough tough thing to go through - and sometimes you have to laugh through the tears . Underside, whitish with dark spots. The long guard hairs on its coat are black tipped. Short tail, blackish above and white below. Legs, tawny with blackish horizontal streaks. Prominent streaked ruff on cheeks extending below the jaw. Ears, short with dark ear tufts. It has large yellow eyes. The retractable claws on its front feet are about 4.5 cm long. Can be mistaken for a lynx but the bob cat has shorther legs and smaller feet. The male bobcat's body is about 80 to 100 cm long, including a short tail of about 12 to 15 cm. The average weight for the male is about 10 kg and for the female is slightly less. An average domestic cat weighs about three and one half kg. This means the average male bobcat weighs more than twice as much as the average house cat. There are records of some bobcats weighing over 25 kg. In his book, titled Leonard Rue reports that in Colorado a bobcat weighing 31 kg was killed. Habitat/Behavior Primarily in the southern areas of Northwestern Ontario. Prefers hardwood forests, brushy scrubland, rocky mountainous areas and sometimes the wooded outskirts of inhabited areas. The bob cat's short legs and smaller feet make it less adapted to deep winter snow than the lynx, restricting its range to the southern boreal forest. It is a solitary hunter, congregating only during breeding season when a number of males may compete for one female. The males travel in a circular way through their home range in search of food. They have resting sites along the way and may take seven to ten days to complete the route. While domestic cats (house cats) try to avoid water, the bobcats enjoy it. They have been spotted playing and swimming in water. The bobcat makes sounds similar to a domestic cat. They meow, purr, hiss, and snarl. Food The bobcat is usually found anywhere where there is an abundant supply of snowshoe hares, the main element of its diet. It will also feed on smaller rodents, ruffed grouse, reptiles and insects. On occasion it will attack a smaller or injured white-tailed deer. The bobcat's favourite food is rabbit, which may make up 90 percent of the bobcat's diet. The bobcat also hunts and eats small prey like mice, ground squirrels, chipmunks, and muskrats. In winter, the bobcat hunts deer who are weak. It jumps onto the deer's back and bites its neck just below the skull. The bobcat doesn't chew its food. It uses its sharp teeth to cut small pieces of meat and swallows them whole. Range/Territory Bobcats live in southern Ontario, but it is difficult to tell how many live in the province. The male and female bobcats occupy home ranges or territories. The male bobcats have much larger home ranges than the females. An area about 150 sq km is common for the male. The home range for the female may be only 15 sq km. Breeding Biology Bobcats are solitary for most of the year, but the male and female get together to mate in February or March. A gestation period of about 50 to 60 days is needed and then the female gives birth to litters that average three kittens. The kittens weigh about 200 grams and are 20 cm long. Their eyes are closed at birth and open in about ten days. The kittens' eyes are blue at birth but gradually change to yellow. Track Hind print registers on the larger fore print while walking and while trotting two prints are observed the hind leading the fore. At faster speeds a group of four prints in a lope pattern can be seen. In deep snow bobcats feet leave draglines. During prep and production I tried not to reveal in my image posts on Flickr any information that might make our production presence in Morocco on this politically sensitive project visible or vulnerable. Tangier and Ouarzazate in Morocco were used for sequences that took place in Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan and Kenya. We now start the daunting task of five months of post production, editing close to a million feet of film shot with up to seven cameras, to make a May airdate on ABC. The image above and others that I can post now that we have wrapped after 85 days of production, were taken during our shoot in Morocco and are images specific to making the movie. Revenge Era. Back in May, my friend Lindsey and I promised that at the next My Chemical Romance show we would dress up as the Revenge days of My Chem. I tried to dress up like Frank Iero and she went as Gerard Way. The X's aren't perfect, but it was fun to dress up despite the fact that I was sweating the entire night. We even met Frank and Mikey that night. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect night. At the height of his popularity, the colorful and flamboyant Long was shot on September 8, 1935, at the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge; he died two days later at the age of 42. Palette Spring Palette Spring is part of the Lower Terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs. As with all the springs in Mammoth, the presence of the colorful bacteria indicates the spring is active in that area. The water from the spring is life. Without it, the bacteria either die or become dormant and the formations revert to their chalky white appearance. When the waters from the spring return, the bacteria flourish in the warm waters bringing back the beautiful colors. Palette Spring Palette is one of the few currently active geothermals at Mammoth Springs. Forget the pictures of many colorful springs you see in the brochures. Mostly what you see at Mammoth now are dull greys and white. This is due to the changing nature of the area - less water is flowing here than in the past. That being said, this particular formation is quite active, and very pretty. Nethercutt Window View from the Nethercutt Museum to the Merle Norman complex in Sylmar. This museum is very cool, especially if you like cars or automatic music instruments. I was here for the instruments and kept skipping past the beautifully restored Packards and Duesenbergs so I could see the next music box or orchestreon. A weird thing about this museum is it's location, at the edge of the Merle Norman Cosmetics complex in Sylmar. The museum is basically the private collection of the company's founders. The surrounding area (Sylmar and San Fernando) is a very depressed area with a mostly Latino immigrant population. It's odd to see such an ostentatious display of wealth in the middle of it. Across the street is an imposing building (not seen, to the left) which contains the part of the collection which can only be seen in guided tours, which require an advance reservation. Many of the more interesting automatic instruments are in that collection, so I hope to come back with a tour group. naked. when i saw this weeks topic, my jaw dropped. just the other day, i suppose because of all of the uneasy feelings i had while looking though photos of my teenage self, i had a conversation with my husband about how i feel like i look exactly the same, yet so incredibly different as i did as a teen. teenage lauren, was so uncomfortable in her skin. she had braces. acne. and a giant nose. and kids are assholes, so she was made fun of, a lot. she just wanted to fit in, didn't we all!? and it never really worked out for her. she eventually fit in with her theatre friends and at some point that's all that mattered. i started to own what i had in college because i realized that i could never change it. and a few years ago, i remember thinking for the first time that i was beautiful. that was a breakthrough and no easy task, but from then it's just been about remaining confident and owning what i've got... cause it's all i've got and if i don't love it how can i expect others to love it. so here i am, no makeup, no hair product, no touchups. 3 or 4 years ago there is no way in hell that i would have posted this. so in that respect, i am pretty proud of myself. 309/365 Unattractive. April 5, 2010-- This sudden change in weather has been great for my tan lines, my attitude, and my wardrobe (I look much cuter in warm-weather clothes). However, the combination of the heat (which causes sweat) and this new makeup I'm trying mean my face is breaking out like crazy. Resulting in my feeling really unattractive, facewise. Way to Keep Your Chin Up (1000'th photo posted) This photo is my 1,000th posted to my photostream since I found Flickr in July, 2008. This time I captured the front of her face looking directly up and easily captured the very long neck of this model. The beauty of how the lighting strikes her shoulder and long brown hair is exciting and her face is very soft and sweet. I also like her makeup that she did herself. This brunette model understands her complexion and uses her makeup accordingly and I like her girl next door appearance. The hot pink dress is sexy, and I'm definitely using this woman again very soon for another photoshoot. I may as well ask my photostream viewers this since I'm always trying to appeal to you: Is there a concept for the next photoshoot that you think I should explore??????????? I've been looking through pictures of Melissa Marie Green for the past couple of days, and the more I look at her, the prettier she gets. I really love her eye makeup, and so I wanted to just take a shot at it, and this was as close as I could get. Laura Cessna. Wilmore, Kentucky. Some people may think that I edited the background on this picture to make it one solid color. But, indeed this photo was just taken all natural. Nothing was really done to the picture besides me putting it in Aperature and taking the, "desaturate" brush and filling Laura in and contrasting the picture with the contrast brush. All the lighting I used was a simple Eco friendly light that was put in her ceiling fan. I promise, no hardcore editing was done! hahaha Thanks for viewing! 20 An old picture that I found.
