Trafalgar Square
A pre war colourised photograph of the north side of Trafalgar Square. Beyond the National Gallery in Pall mall East is a very white building, this was Hampton's Furniture Store which was destroyed by enemy action on the night of 14th -15th November 1940 and we all remember what that led to when the National Gallery wanted to build an extension on the site. The Prince of Wales stymied the design for the extension by saying in a speech to RIBA that it was "...a carbuncle on the face of a much loved friend". The extension was eventually built but not the carbuncle.
