This is a carpet beater my mother had one. Our house was on Scotswood road Maun St. It was a lovely house you went up six stairs onto a landing there was a living room a kithchen and three bedrooms and a bathroom. We had a gas cooker no electricity all gas...we went to bed at night we had a candle in a jar that Dad made...he was a cabinate maker he had his own workshop...we had a poss tub and we had carpets on the floor ...lino and carpeting...the stairs had half a carpet...mam used to make clippy mats...

on my way to drop my son to his friend's house i stopped for 5 seconds to photograph this. and my son (9 years) who was right next to me behind my camera asked:
"dad, why did you stop for that?", and I replied:
"the mat on the pavement just looked funny", and he said:
"the only thing that's funny here is you stopping to take this photograph".
I think he's right. there's nothing funny about a doormat on a narrow street where the houses are overflowing.
