World of Wheels 2010
A rather rare and unique motorboat... A 1956 Lone Star Meteor, a motorboat that is almost bordering on over-styled... LOL One of seven known to exist, and one of only three in operational condition... The owner searched extensively to acquire it and still had to restore it, and also managed to find a period correct tear-drop boat trailer, that was back before the days of nice modern winches... And what's towing it? Why of course a 1956 Chevrolet Corvette, what else would do...
Unfortunately it was hard to photograph the whole unit effectively at this show, but the owner told me that he plans to display the whole unit (car & boat) at the Spring Thaw show before the boat heads up to their cottage for the summer...

I just ran over Morrissey
I just ran over Morrissey. Picking my car up from the Toyota garage in Berkeley. A lot of confusion. First they tell me to wait in the garage while one of the workers brings it around. Then they tell me walk to the top of the ramp which I do and stand around
and nothing happens. So I go look for my car in the lot. One of the workers runs up and tells me he will fetch the car and to go stand at the top of the ramp. I ask if i can put my bike in the back of the car now so i don't have to stop at the ramp and block
traffic. He says no, I go back to the top of the ramp, he pulls it up hops out engine running. I take my bike wheel off and wrestle the bike frame into the back seat after displacing my bacofoil knickknack dish in the process. Peeved by the whole
experience thus far I get into the drivers seat and pull forward ready to test my new brakes and immediately hear a sickening sound of breaking plastic. What the fuck! I think it's the tail light breaking. I hop out and there is my tape of Kill Uncle freshly flattened by my back right wheel, Morrissey peers up through the plastic shards. He looks kind of mortified, holding his arms and hands up in a defensive posture. I picked up his remains as another customer looks on amused."Friend of yours?" he asks. Morrissey didn't have to die for something so unimportant as picking up my car from the Toyota garage. Why'd you have to do it Stephen?
Garage Sale Diva
These are Very Nice People. The woman to the right with the tie dyed Broncos t-shirt volunteered to escort me to Seattle last April when I had to go there for a consultation appointment and I doubted my ability to make the trip safely. She also masterminded my garage sale. I am convinced that no one would have shown up had she not been involved and had anyone shown up, they would not have bought anything except for her ability to make people feel at ease and create a welcoming mood. I ended up not being able to be present during large segments of the sale because I was cleaning up dog poop (yes, her highness had what must be her first indoor potty mistake in like five years or more); explaining task expectations to a couple of amazing sons of a VA friend who had come to spend the day helping out; and needing to Just Stop because I felt horrible. While I was not present, these two people were extremely present in my absence, continuously rearranging the items for sale, collecting money and making change, and generally wheeling and dealing.

...engine compartment!!
I was driving my son to soccer tryouts yesterday on a highly curvy section of freeway at about 60MPH when I suddenly lost my power steering. I could still turn the wheel, so I figured that the power steering unit had failed, but I decided to try wrestle the steering wheel and make it to the next exit.
Next a warning light came on, informing me that the battery was not charging. So apparently I had lost a belt running to both the alternator and the power steering unit, but I should still be able to make it to the exit.
Then another warning flashed that informed me that the car was overheating. I glanced at the temperature guage, and it was in the red rapidly rising until it was pegged on high. So the belt went to the water pump as well. Time to pull over.
I found a spot with as much room as possible to get away from the trucks flying by, and opened the hood.
I jumped back, startled, as I found a medium-sized rabbit sitting on top of the valve cover, looking back at me. Apparently he had climbed up in the engine compartment to get warm the night before, then later while I was driving, somehow knocked the belt off that ran many of the engine accessories. I started laughing hysterically, closed the hood, and ran back to the car to get my son so I could show him the cause of the engine failure.
We had a good laugh, and the rabbit ran off (having transported himself to far greener pastures than the snowy elevation where he climbed aboard).
We were able to limp the van toa Chevy dealer ship by repeating the process of allowing it to cool down and driving it until it overheated. For or five cycles like that and one new and much less furry belt later, we were back on our way to soccer.
Amazingly the rabbit seemed to be fine. Clearly he was very, very lucky. Perhaps having four rabbits feet gave him some luck after all?

The best part of my Belle Chasse house was the exterior--we had a long, lovely porch, and I bought a hay bale or two every fall for Halloween. For Thanksgiving, I hauled out an assortment of attic treasures, including a vintage wagon wheel purchased at a going-out-of-business sale at the Landscape Nursery I worked at in 1983. That wheel has been everywhere with me--California, Hawai'i, Louisiana and now Texas. The Peacock style wrought iron chair was made in Mexico but was a purchase in Hawai'i.

We have a science project going on in our house. Nora has vases filled with water, and on has a spoon of sugar, one has a penny, one has a spoon of bleach, and one is the control, with just water. We put roses in the vases to see which group would last the longest/stay the freshest.
It occurred to me as I was helping Nora set up her experiment that the words on the vases resonate with Daniel's diabetes care. What's your sugar level? How many pennies am I spending on diabetes supplies? Disinfect all surfaces (bleach)! Can we get your blood sugar in control?
Science Project
This is my son's science project from 7th grade (1999). The intention was to compare the weight supported by a suspension bridge and a truss bridge. The same amount of material (balsa and roadway) was used in both bridges.
Neither bridge failed under the weights that were added. Pretty impressive! As you can probably tell, the amount of weight on the suspension bridge wouldn't even fit on the truss bridge as built.
The washers are about 2 inches in diameter.

Stanton Barrett
His approach to living full on, with little regard to the dangers he experiences almost daily, sets him apart from all others as an eXtreme-sports extremist.
Stanton Barrett has a life dedicated to speed and intense business.
After a successful career in go-karts with an amazing 21 wins in 28 starts, Barrett made his NASCAR Busch Series debut in 1992 at Oxford Plains Speedway where he earned the outside pole in his very first Busch race.
He has run a limited schedule in the Busch Series since then, with a best finish of fifth at Atlanta Motor Speedway and eight top ten finishes.
Barrett has competed in 18 NASCAR Nextel Cup events since 1999.
Barrett also competed in the Goody’s Dash Series in 1991 when he finished sixth in points after running as high as second with six races to go.
In 1993 he raced a late model at Concord (N.C.) where he earned a win, six 2nd and three 3rd place finishes, with 9 poles in 13 races. He also has four ARCA starts with three top-five finishes.
Coast to coast - Stanton is best known as one of the very few independent NASCAR team owners who are also was the team driver. Being an owner/driver of a NASCAR team takes dedication and experience of which although young, Stanton was committed to both for the last 17 years in NASCAR racing.
In LA – he is best known for his amazing stunt work, and more recently as an emerging director and producer. Want someone to jump a car 80 feet over a dry river bed, or fall 100 ft from a building, or perhaps jump a motorcycle from building to building in down town la, he has done it all. His biggest films to date are Spiderman, Spiderman 2, Spiderman 3, The Dukes of Hazzard, Jurassic Park 2 and 3, Blade, Batman, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Rock the Cradle 2. Stanton is also a regular commentator on Entertainment Channel’s EXTRA.
In NY – he is best known for his film production and direction – working on everything from a killer 30-second spot, to an environmental documentary and now his first feature film in pre production for producing and his new art studio featuring his photographs.

Stanton Barrett comes to all this X-extremism quite naturally. Genetics and environment were certainly both key contributors to his extraordinary talents and accomplishments. Stanton comes from an amazing lineage of professional athletes.
Stanton’s grandfather, Dave McCoy, served as a coach for the US Ski Team and founded Mammoth Mountain, the largest ski resort in the country. They still 4-wheel the mountains together and ride motocross bike occasionally. His mother, Penny McCoy, was an Olympic and US Ski Team member.
At the age of 15, Penny became the youngest woman to ever win a World Cup medal for the U.S. World Cup Ski Team and notably was the nations top skier tell her early retirement with world cup racing.
Stanton’s father, Stan Barrett, was one of Hollywood’s most respected stuntmen. His international fame came when he was the first person to break the speed of sound on land, in 1979 in the infamous Budweiser rocket car that sped him to over 739 mph. Mach 1.101 Stan then went on to be an accomplished NASCAR driver in the early 1980s with his close friends Hal Nedham, Burt Reynolds and Paul Newman’s Skoal Bandit team.
Paul Newman, a very close friend of his fathers’ and Stanton’s godfather has also had a significant mentoring influence on Stanton’s life and drive to excel, as well as to give back to others.
Now, Barrett focuses on his NASCAR Nationwide Series and full-time racing career in the Indy Racing League for 3G Racing. Stanton hopes to accomplish the feat of being the first ever to complete racing in the Nationwide Series and the Indianapolis 500 in the same weekend!
