Toshiba Satellite U505 Full Review

Construction and Design

The new Toshiba Satellite notebook series offers an ideal U500/U505 compact footprint similar to most laptops with 13.3 ", but can not really call a laptop a" netbook ". With a thickness of 1, 5 cm (2.25-inch to 12-cell battery), the U505 is probably one of the largest 13-inch notebooks on the market. Not only is the U505 is thicker than the Lenovo ThinkPad X301 Apple'sMacBook or air, but the U505 is thicker and heavier than the Dell XPS Studio 13 and 13-inch MacBook Pro

The exterior of the laptop is constructed of plastic with some flexibility in the left palm rest and the LCD screen lid when pressure is applied. The same structure does not suffer from the "chirp" that are common in plastic laptops at low cost. Toshiba has wisely decided to abandon the glossy "Fusion" is used in portable satellite last year for a textured matte finish. Our review unit has improved the texture "Brown Premium de Luxe", which includes chrome accents on the edges of the A1079.

Build quality is good compared to low-cost netbook, but at the same price Apple MacBook Pro and Dell Studio XPS 13. While most notebook manufacturers have begun the transition of its laptops with screens with an aspect ratio of 16:9 (liquid crystal, as manufacturers look to PM 4:09) was able to maintain the relationship between tradition Toshiba 16 : 10 U500/U505 widescreen series. This provides more square than the competition U505 rectangular.

Screen and speakers

While we're on the subject of the screen, the 13.3 "screen offers a bright WXGA resolution (1280 x 800) there was absolutely no problem with the screen on our review unit:. CCFL backlight was nice and smooth and stuck pixels. How is common with glossy screens, colors and contrast are very good and the pictures and video "pop" on screen. Like last year, seems to have found the perfect balance between gloss and matt. The screen is quite light to produce wealth, added the contrast of glossy screens and inherent, but the surface is not so bright that the reflections become a problem unless if you work in direct sunlight, with a view rejected light.

The screen is just beautiful seen from the front. Horizontal viewing angles are good, but you begin to notice color changes in a wide-angle position. There is some color inversion when you view the screen from sharp vertical angles (bright colors when viewed from the top of the laptop or dark colors are reversed when viewing the screen from the ground) but most people rarely Once a framework of extreme vertical angles.

The performance of the speakers is good despite the size of stereo speakers located on the keyboard quarts. Of course, a subwoofer to provide a better response than the "metal", but that sounds high and low averages are good for a laptop of 13 inches. The high volume levels were strong enough to fill a room with a heavy sound before distortion becomes evident. However, like any laptop, the headphones are probably a good addition to this handset.

Keyboard and touchpad

Once again, Toshiba has decided to stop using the term "Fusion" on your keyboard and use a less bright color that gives each the key to a lasting and good consistency. Unlike most used keys on conventional keyboards road last year, the U505 uses flat keys that are a little 'smaller than usual because Toshiba has decided to make the shape of an inverted "T" for some reason. This does not create a problem for typing, but it may take some time to get used to the size and feel of the keys. The keystrokes are smooth, perfectly deep padded nice and quiet. The entire keyboard has some flexibility in heavy writing pressure, but almost no flex when normal pressure is applied. The backlit keyboard is nice and balanced, and helps you see what you write in a dark room.

I was a big fan of the Inspiron 1501 Battery last year, was just one of the best I've used a laptop of 13 inches last year. The surface is flush with the palmrests but there was a slight application of what was almost like sandpaper on the smooth surface. Toshiba has opted for a more traditional ALPS touchpad on this occasion and I was not impressed. The recessed area is small compared to the touchpad on most modern laptops 13 inches and the sensitivity was just average. Toshiba was sufficient to include a white LED backlight on the touch screen that not only looks good, but it helps you quickly find the touch screen in a darkened room lit.

The touchpad buttons in our unit of Appeal has a chrome look with superficial comments and click when pressed. The buttons are nice and big, with a clear separation that makes them very easy to use ... but I wish the answer was a little 'more than press the touchpad buttons.

Battery

The 12-cell 8500mAh Li-ion battery provides excellent battery life for the battery. The extended battery gives 5 hours and 18 minutes of life while surfing the web with Wi-Fi phone in a "balanced" and screen brightness turned to 70 percent.

Although battery life is average considering the massive 8500mAh battery, extended battery with the U505 should provide enough energy for a student or the road warrior that has no access to a power outlet. Since approximately 13-inch thin and light laptop such as the MSI X340 has reached less than four hours, the work is a pretty decent U500/U505.

Conclusion

The Toshiba Satellite laptop U500/U505 is a good for general use, but has a strong competition from other 13-inch notebooks on the market. Toshiba clearly listened to some of the criticisms of last year, a1045, and made some improvements in the model year.

Unfortunately, Toshiba may have been shot in the foot when it comes to the price of its higher-end configurations. I find it hard to believe that the majority of students could be interesting for purchasing this Toshiba on the total sale price of over $ 1,000, when the same student could buy a brand new Apple 13-inch MacBook Pro around the same price. The entry-level U500/U505 configurations start at less than $ 700, so that might actually be a convenient choice for back to school this year
