Discarded ideas 02.04.2008 My son Leo (4 years old) decided to go through my idea-box and do some hardhanded editing! Here are some of the ideas he "didn't like": 1. A 100-mile gallery, inspired by the 100 mile diet, to only display works from artists living with a 100 mile radius. I thought it was a great idea, but Leo does not agree. I also like the idea of the 100 mile suit, as a consept for a local clothing store. Perhaps one could put all three together? 2. Falu-korv shaped like the Batman symbol. I was sure this would be an instant hit with the kids! 3. A magnetic dinner plate for children. By placing a powerful magnet underneath the table it is harder for a child to up-end it, or even move it. If you have children you know why this would be a great idea! 4. Thing library. A very old idea of mine, that has been implemented in many libraries all over the world, but I still want to create a local one. I had a webbased personal thing library for a while, it is still online, but not really updated. 5. An antology of poetry, short stories and images with an "Outdoors" theme. You know, nature. Working title Outside. 6. A website for giving yourself carbon credits and a better environmenta conscience. There are plenty of carbon calculators out there, but they all seem to focus on how much you suck. I want to create one that shows how good you are. Actions that gives you free carbon credits are borrowing things from friends or libraries, recycling, not buying something new when you could or wanted to, buying something used instead of new, buying something green instead of not, buying something local instead of imported, doing nothing at all, using energy saving appliances instead, etc. You could still buy carbon credits if you absolutely wanted to, but is is far better if you give them to yourself as a reward for being green. Perhaps you could even sell them, or simply give them to a friend who has to travel somewhere. 7. A permanent flea market in my area. There are a few overpriced second hand stores in my city, and a few one-day flea markets, but there should be something more permanent, like in Amsterdam, New York or London, a big thriving mess of a market where people could sell or swap their stuff. 8. A cute sketch for a "family crest". Forest + Beach 9. A way to make a "Hotweels track" for my kids using recycled tracks. My kids love playing with them, but they are super expensive and not environmentally friendly, but if there was a locally prodused and cheaper alternative created with recycled materials I would buy 50 meters and let the kids go wild. No reason why it is should be so expensive, its just plastic! 10. Hiring myself out to people who need to develop new ideas. 148 - 122509 Day 148 of 365 Xmas day and I finally get a break. I spent most of the day home relaxing playing some game, watching some movie, setting up the receiver, browsing for deals. I just found out that my Employee discount is useless when it comes to Boxing day. You can find most stuff cheaper than my employee discount. One thing I learned not to do is stop checking for price after you bought something. It just makes you paranoid. Apparently the receiver I got went on sale in Bestbuy. It's actually 80 bucks cheaper than me using my employee discount. But it got sold out by the time I found out. Totally sucks! Andy's mom did some cooking for the night. It was a little gathering thing and also a little chill time during all the crazy holiday work hours. So I though yea I should take my camera along. I ended up with no picture at all coz I was being dumb. I forgot my memory card at home. I though of getting a back up before but though I will probably never forget the CF card coz it was big. Guess what I just did. So I got a backup right after after I get home. I have been eyeing Lexar CF card selling for 180 on Future Shop, with a little employee discount magic I got it for 90 bucks. That damn card better not go on sale anytime soon or I'll flip! I left early that night coz I had to work very early tomorrow. Boxing day! I drove by Future Shop at around 12AM to see if there's actually people lining up. Guess what there is. Crazy ass people lining up at 12AM in the frekkin rain to save $100 that's just stupid ... I give you that $100. Well I guess it makes more sense if a dude is getting say a TV, a computer, some appliances, bla bla bla. You get to save a coupla hundreds. But will I want to line up at 12AM to get the saving? Probably not. I can get $100 a day just sitting @ work surfing on Facebook. So the whole Boxing day thing is just dumb. Yes you are getting amazing deals but the products are usually crap. Hence why I prefer to stay home on Boxing Day. Shopping online is much easier! San Remo Apartments sunset Central Park West, Upper West Side, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States of America Summary Soaring over Central Park, the profile of the San Remo is among the most important components of the magnificent skyline of Central Park West. The first of the twin-towered buildings which give Central Park West its distinctive silhouette, and one of the New York's last grand apartment houses built in the pre-Depression era, it was designed by Emery Roth, then at the pinnacle of his career as a specialist in apartment house architecture. A residential skyscraper in classical garb, the San Remo epitomizes Roth's ability to combine the traditional with the modern, an urbane amalgam of luxury and convenience, decorum and drama. Development of Central Park West Central Park West, the northern continuation of Eighth Avenue bordering on the park, is today one of New York's finest residential streets, but in the mid-nineteenth century it was a rural and inhospitable outpost, notable for its rocky terrain, browsing goats and ramshackle shanties. With the creation of Central Park in the 1860s, followed by Riverside Park (begun 1876), as well as a series of transportation improvements such as the Ninth Avenue Elevated Railroad (1879), the Upper West Side in general experienced a period of intense real estate speculation. The 1880were the first decade of major development, and set the pattern for the Upper West Side, where rowhouses line the side streets, and multiple dwellings, commercial and institutional structures are sited on the avenues. Not surprisingly, those avenues closest to the parks. Central Park West and Riverside Drive, were immediately considered the most desirable. (Ninth Avenue, re-christened Columbus in 1890, Tenth Avenue, renamed Amsterdam in the same year, and Broadwaythe Boulevard before 1899 were all, in varying degrees marred by cable car and elevated railway lines.) The potential of the parkside avenues for development as prime locations led to an anticipatory increase in land values; prices rose to such extravagant heights that many speculative builders shied away from row house and tenement construction, from which they would realize relatively meager returns, while the very wealthy, who could afford to build mansions, for the most part remained on the more fashionable East Side- As a result, the development of Central Park West lagged behind the general development of the Upper West Side. It was not until the turn of the century that Central Park West's construction boom began and it emerged as a- boulevard of elegant tall apartments punctuated by impressive institutional buildingsa kind of grand proscenium to the architectural variety show of the Upper West Side. The stage had been set By two great monuments, the American Museum of Natural History between 77th and 81st Streets, (begun 1874, architects Vaux & Mould, and a designated New York City Landmark), and the Dakota, the pioneering luxury apartments at 72nd Street (1880-84. architect Henry Hardenbergh, and a designated New York City Landmark). Yet a survey of roughly a decade later revealed that more than half the block fronts along the park from 60th to 96th Streets remained vacant or contained only old, modest frame houses. A few rather unprepossessing apartment hotels (at least, relative to the Dakota) were constructed in the early 1890s, among them the San Remo at 75th Street, designed in 1890 by architect Edward Angel 1.2 was described by Moses King in his Handbook as "an immense and imposing edifice, finely situated on the high ground of West 75th Street and facing on the lawns, woods and waters of Central Park. The rooms . . . are all in suites"; and more recently as "a ten-story, high Victorian pile, a mixture of Gothic and Romanesque details . . . unremarkable from an architectural standpoint except for the steep pyramidal towers at its corners." Among the other apartment hotels on the avenue, were the Beresford at 81st Street, the Majestic (architect Alfred Zucker) just south of the Dakota, both erected in the early 1890s, and the El Dorado at 90th Street of 1901. These have all been replaced by their towered namesakes of the late 1920s and early '30s, but they had already been architecturally superceded by grand apartments houses of the early 1900ssuch as the Prasada (1904) at 65th Street, the Langham (1905) at 73rd Street, the Kenilworth (1908) at 75th Street. This phase in Central Park West's development was interrupted by World War I, when construction ground to a halt. The second major phase of development began with the great prosperity of the '20s producing the Art Deco towered buildings, and Roth's Beresford and San Remo Apartments which now define the skyline. The 1920s provided a generation of aspiring immigrants with the opportunity to move up in the world, both economically and geographically. Many Jewish immigrants, refugees from Csarist pogroms, had achieved prosperity "Bread that must be sliced with an ax... is too nourishing" ~Happy MUNCHIE Monday ~ ~ Fran Liebowitz, Metropolitan Life, 1978 ~ Made potato soup and homemade bread in our bread machine but it took a while before we could do it..... The temperature inside the kitchen has to be at least 75 degrees so that the yeast will rise. It was only 70, so..... We had to push the heat temperature guide to 76 and wait a half hour for it to get warm enough. Meanwhile, hubby and I were both sweating by the time it took , but the bread turned out and was delicious... LOLLLL ~ Bread Machine ~ Wikipedia A bread making machine or bread maker is a home appliance for baking bread. It consists of a bread pan (or "tin") with a paddle mounted in the center of a small special-purpose oven, with a control panel. While most bread machines have different cycles for different kinds of doughincluding straight white bread, whole grain, European-style (sometimes labelled "French"), and dough-only (for pizza dough and shaped loaves baked in the oven)many also have a timer to allow the bread machine to activate without operator attendance, and some high-end models allow the user to program a custom cycle. The first breadmaker was released in Japan in 1986 by the Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (now Panasonic). A decade later they had become popular in the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States. While not viable for commercial use due to the fixed loaf shape and the limited duty cycle, bread machines are very suitable for home use, producing their best results when dealing with kneaded doughs. For those consumers concerned about the toxicity of teflon, the chemical used as a non-stick agent in all bread maker pans available on the market today, the use of a stand mixer is an alternative. Arlington - My Apartment in Rosslyn (1965) My apartment building at 1601 N. 19th Street, in Arlington. It was in Rosslyn, just five minutes' walk from my office at Center for Naval Analyses. There were 14 one-bedroom apartments in the building, two on the ground floor and four on each of the main floors. My apartment was in the rear of the second floor, on this side. My 1963 Volkswagen is in front of the building. It was usually parked in a covered area under the rear of the building. My small apartment This is my small and poorly furnished apartment.
