Letter from Dad to me for when I graduated college. He wrote this on August 1st, 2002 and he died on August 24th, 2002. I graduated in 2004 and received this letter on my graduation day.

"Lil’ Toot:

If you are reading this it means I was not able to be here for your college graduation. Nonetheless, I am so proud of you even though we are not supposed to be prideful.

Did you mom do what I asked and keep this letter a secret? If she did then I am proud of her too. I do not know how long I have been gone from you but I am sure that no matter how long it has been it has been rough for her and you and Jonas. That makes me even more proud of you because you have had to overcome one more obstacle in order to graduate.

Are you the first Elber to get their degree? Somehow I think you are. Somehow I think that you have made your education a priority. I have always had regrets that I did not hunker down and finish my schooling even though I am still not sure what I would get my degree in. When I was in school at Houston I thought that I might want to be an architect someday. I really enjoyed my drafting classes and drawing things. I also enjoyed chemistry. I had fun in chemistry class and I still miss doing it.

Do you think of me as much as I think of you? Every day that I sit in this chair or lay in that bed I think of you. I think of the day you were born. I think of you as a baby and learning to walk. I think of you going to preschool and grade school. I think of you getting your first hearing aids and how terrible I felt. I think of you going to Badger Mountain. I think of you at WSD and how your mom cried all the way home after leaving you and how she cried almost every day. I was crying inside but I knew that she needed me to be the one she could cry to. I think of you at Western and how it seems like yesterday that I was there and had not even met your mom yet. I think of you being my feminine consultant. I think of you being my nurse when you were just a little girl. I think of you graduating. I think of you meeting a husband that I might never get to meet here on this earth. I think of you and how you have grown into a woman that is truly a daughter of God. Your resilience amazes me. I think of the obstacles you have overcome and continue to overcome and it makes me proud all over again. I pray about your health. I pray about your hearing. I pray about your safety and get so mad at myself that I cannot be all the dad that I want to be.

Aimee, I am amazed that god has chosen to give me such a full and good life and that he blessed me with you and Jonas and your mom. You have been everything that a dad could want in a daughter and much more. I hope that I have told you enough how proud I am of you.

As you graduate from college my wish for you is to be happy. It is that plain and simple. I want you to enjoy sunsets and rainbows and little kids playing in the park and shooting stars and time with your family and friends. I want you to think of me during the good times and try real hard to not think of the bad times. I want you to see your own self worth. Don’t sell yourself short. You are an inspiration to me and others. Take your knowledge and your goodness and your smile into the world and enjoy all it has to offer.

I wish I had some profound words of wisdom that I could give you as you go into this world. All I can think of to say is that I love you. Always remember that. I will always be with you and I will be rooting for you in everything you do. Always remember the three III’s and you can never go wrong in this world.
