Sitting around, waiting for my plane to take off to Miami, where I was to catch a connecting flight to Guayaquil and meet up with my wife, who somehow managed to buy a ticket originating in Newark.
The plane was running an hour late, and I thought I'd miss her and my connecting flight. Luckily for me, the same plane that bought me to Miami was the same plane that was going to take me to Guayaquil!

Douglas C-133 Cargomaster
The C-133 had large tail doors and side doors and a large, open cargo area. With the C-133B, the rear cargo doors were modified to open to the side (petal doors), making an opening large enough to transport ballistic missiles such as the Atlas, Titan and Minuteman more cheaply, safely and quickly than road transport. Several hundred Minuteman and other ICBMs were airlifted to and from their operational bases. The C-133 also transported Atlas, Saturn and Titan rockets to Cape Canaveral for use as launch boosters in the Gemini, Mercury and Apollo space programs. After the Apollo capsules splashed down, they were airlifted in C-133s from Norfolk Naval Station or Hickam AFB to Ellington AFB, Texas, or to California.

Would you fly in this plane?
Somehow Tommy's immortal words were coming back to me: "but the flight was cheap!" ...I'm not sure what kind of safety regulations they have in Belgium, but I probably would have preferred my first flight to be in a plane with a working radio, seatbelts that aren't completely worn through, a bit less rust on the wing struts, etc... But who am I to nitpick about details like that? Our pilot knows what he's doing, he's been flying for all of 2 years and nearly completed his high school diploma (he's even already been offered a job by RyanAir, where most pilots are former stewardesses who learned to fly just by listening in on what the pilots were doing).
Charleroi Airport #1
Charleroi Airport's full name is Aeroport de Charleroi Brussels south. Brussels being the capital of Belgium. However, Charleroi Airport is actually a 50-minute train ride followed by a 30-minute busride away from Brussels. This often means that cheap flights, arriving late or departing early, get passengers stuck at the Airport, having nowhere to go. Traffic to Charleroi stops at around 23:00.

DAY 11 - june 4
Today is our day to return to the states and it’s proven to be quite the travel disaster. Our flight from Melbourne to Sydney was delayed thus causing a group of at least 30 travel agents to miss our flight from Sydney to Los Angeles. Question: What do you get when you tell a group of luxury Travel Agents wanting to get home that Qantas can’t upgrade them to premium economy or business class as many of them expected?
Answer: A bunch of crying babies in the back of a plane.
I mean, geez I’m just happy to be on the plane home. Luckily I was one of the few thrown on standby so I could make it back in time the next day for my bar hag job at the Lighthouse (woop-dee-doo), but in the meantime I took some airport wait time to snap a mug of my dear Koala friend seen here. I’m taking home with me just a couple souvenirs – a boomerang (naturally) and, since I couldn’t exactly afford the gigantic didgeridoo Oscar asked for, I settled on an Aboriginal Rain Stick for him and this wonderful token of stuffed Aussie joy for myself.
What I’ve learned today:
Regardless of the fact that I passed up one extra day in luxury so I wouldn’t get fired from that stupid bar job, I realized I’m still more than happy about who will be awaiting my arrival at LAX, coffee and chocolate in hand, when I finally make it home. :-)
Flying...
We left Los Angeles on Sunday at 9pm and, after 15 hours of flying landed in Sydney on 6am Sunday morning, easily in time to catch our flight to Auckland. I was in good sprits despite the fact that my glasses had been crushed because someone sat on them back in LAX. Soon after we landed we found out all flights to New Zealand had been canceled. A volcano in Chile had spewed so much debris into the air that it had messed up the airspace over New Zealand. After 4 hours of panicking, arguing and wondering if all of that $$$ we spent setting up hotel, campervan reservations was lost; we were finally able to book a flight to Auckland.
Though Melbourne.
Two days from now.

you can see Boracay Island!!!!
so finally we get on our flight from Manila to Kalibo at 8:30am on Nov 2nd, two days later than our original arrival date/time. we arrive in Kalibo airport but our journey to Boracay is not even half over. we still have a 2 hour bus ride to Caticlan and then a ferry ride from Caticlan to Boracay and then a taxi ride from the Boracay ferry to the hotel. we both didn't know what to expect with the bus roads so we took Dramamine and slept the whole time.
it was hard to fly past the island of our destination to Kalibo, knowing how much further we had to travel to get back to the island we flew over
Philippines 2011, Boracay Island
This is the very tiny plane that took us on our domestic flight from Manila to Boracay Airport, which isn't in Boracay at all. The airport (more like just a landing strip) is on a peninsula, Aklan across from the island. From there, people must take a short 15min ferry to actually get onto Boracay.

Tenerife at 12000 ft
Mount Teide or, in Spanish, El Teide, is an active though dormant volcano which last erupted in 1909 from the El Chinyero vent on the Santiago (northwestern) rift and is located on Tenerife, Canary Islands. The volcano and its surrounds comprise the Teide National Park (Parque Nacional del Teide in Spanish). The park has an area of 18900 ha and was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 29, 2007.
At 3718 m above sea level, and approximately 7500 m above the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, Teide is the highest mountain in Spain and the highest point in the Atlantic Ocean. (Note: The actual summit stands 3 metres (10 ft) higher than the triangulation station, and associated bench mark, which has an altitude of 3,715 m (12,188 ft)). The island of Tenerife itself is the third largest volcanic ocean island on Earth by volume. Teide is also the third highest volcano on a volcanic ocean island. It is also unstable and possibly in a more advanced stage of deformation and failure than the much publicised Cumbre Vieja. The United Nations Committee for Disaster Mitigation have designated Teide as a Decade Volcano. It is considered to be the 13th most dangerous volcano in the world due to its proximity to several major towns and the nearby city of Puerto de la Cruz
Day 349/365 - Pat
Day Three-hundred-and-forty-nine ...
Meet The Mother-in-Law. We went around for a quick visit before she jetted off to Tenerife for some winter sunshine - and to show her what exactly it was she'd bought me for Christmas!! I'm loving the different effects I'm getting with the softbox - wish I'd had one yonks ago!
Anyway, as I write this the family are just finishing off their second day at the airport. At one point they did actually manage to take off, only for 'a problem' to appear thirty miles into the flight, so they had the joy of circling Liverpool for two hours to burn off some fuel before landing back at Manchester. So, maybe she'll get to go on holiday tomorrow ... who knows!

24 Hours in Japan(town)
Last weekend Nicole and I packed our bags, locked the front door, and drove 2 miles north to San Francisco's Japantown.
We parked the car, checked into the Miyako hotel, and spent the next 24 hours pretending to be in Japan, strolling through Japantown and the Tezuka/Atom Boy exhibit at the Asian Art Museum.
It was remarkably convincing. All the sights, sounds, tastes, and shopping of a mid-sized Japanese city -- without that harsh airfare aftertaste!
