Major Patrick Henry Brady, US Army The Congressional Medal Of Honor Profiles of Americas Military Heroes from the Civil War to the Present - 3,460 and counting... Is among the many heroes during the long war in Southeast Asia was Patrick H. Brady, the first US Army DUSTOFF pilot to receive the Medal of Honor. The son of one of World War IIs Darbys Rangers, Brady was born in 1936 in Phillip, South Dakota. In 1959, Brady was commissioned through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps from Seattle University. As a newly commissioned officer he attended the Army Medical Service School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and, upon graduation, followed with an assignment to the 6th Infantry Division stationed in Germany. In 1963, after completing helicopter training at Fort Rucker, Alabama, Brady was assigned to the 57th Medical Detachment (Aerial Ambulance) flying the Bell UH-1H Iroquois, known as the Huey, for the first of his two tours in South Vietnam. During this tour he served as a medical evacuation pilot in the Mekong Delta region of South Vietnam using the detachments standard callsign, DUSTOFFpicked because the helicopters often blew dust and shelters all over the men on the ground during pickups. After serving as the Detachment Commander, he was reassigned in January 1965 to Fort Benning, Georgia, where he helped form the 11th Air Assault Divisionthe predecessor to the famed 1st Air Cavalry Division. During this assignment Brady twice deployed to the Dominican Republic in support of US peacekeeping operations. In 1967 he returned to Vietnam for his second combat tour in the UH-1H. Assigned to the 54th Medical Detachment at Chu Lai, Brady served as both the Operations Officer and as the Commander. It was during this tour that Brady flew his most heroic mission. On 6 January 1968, responding to a medevac request, Brady repeatedly faced enemy fire to evacuate wounded. After four flights and three battle-damaged helicopters, he evacuated 51 seriously injured soldiers. For his actions on this day, President Nixon presented him with the Medal of Honor. During his two tours, he developed tactical and inclement weather flying techniques and flew over 2,000 combat missions, rescuing more than 5,000 wounded soldiers. He later served as the Commander, 326th Medical Battalion, Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Chief of Public Affairs for the Army, and Secretary to the United Nations Military Armistice Commission in Korea. His career culminated as Deputy Commanding General for Active Components, Sixth US Army, Presidio of San Francisco, California. Since his retirement in 1993 as a major general, Brady has served as the President of the Medal of Honor Society, Chairman of the Citizens Flag Alliance, and Commissioner of the American Battle Monuments Commission. SETTING: On 6 January 1968, a call was made to medevac wounded soldiers from a fog-shrouded valley near Chu Lai. Repeatedly warned that rescue missions were impossible, Pat Brady still volunteered. Six times, Brady and his crew in DUSTOFF 55 overcame intense enemy fire and miserable weather to evacuate 51 American and South Vietnamese soldiers. Using three different helicopters that were hit over 400 times, his skill and daring became legendary. Moreover, Brady mission became synonymous for a challenging and dangerous rescue operation. Rank and organization: Major, U.S. Army, Medical Service Corps, 54th Medical Detachment, 67th Medical Group, 44th Medical Brigade. Place and date: Near Chu Lai, Republic of Vietnam, 6 January 1968. Entered service at: Seattle, Wash. Born: 1 October 1936, Philip, S. Dak. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Maj. Brady distinguished himself while serving in the Republic of Vietnam commanding a UH-1H ambulance helicopter, volunteered to rescue wounded men from a site in enemy held territory which was reported to be heavily defended and to be blanketed by fog. To reach the site he descended through heavy fog and smoke and hovered slowly along a valley trail, turning his ship sideward to blow away the fog with the backwash from his rotor blades. Despite the unchallenged, close-range enemy fire, he found the dangerously small site, where he successfully landed and evacuated 2 badly wounded South Vietnamese soldiers. He was then called to another area completely covered by dense fog where American casualties lay only 50 meters from the enemy. Two aircraft had previously been shot down and others had made unsuccessful attempts to reach this site earlier in the day. With unmatched skill and extraordinary courage, Maj. Brady made 4 flights to this embattled landing zone and successfully rescued all the wounded. On his third mission of the day Maj. Brady once again landed at a site surrounded by the enemy. The friendly ground force, pinned down by enemy fire, had been unable to reach and secure the landing zone. Although his aircraft had been badly damaged and his controls partially shot away during hi Gerald Stuart Yeaton with his kid sister Dorothy Uncle Jerry was a C-47 Pilot much of the war as well as being a French translator when in Europe. From a letter from my Uncle Gerald S. Yeaton dated Aug 21, 2002 He and his older brother Ivan A. Yeaton Jr. joined the Army January 16, 1941. Jerry then served on Cape Cod, MA at Camp Edwards until July 1942 when he had enlisted in the Aviation Cadet training program. He was sent to Kelly Field in San Antonio, TX where he took ground school and pre-flight. Then he was sent to Coleman, TX for primary flight training, San Angelo, TX for primary flight training and Lubbock, TX for advanced flight training. He graduated from all that April 22, 1943 and then went to Del Valle, TX for transitional training for C-47’s. After completion he was sent to the 436th Troop Carrier Group in Alliance, NE. They later were moved to Laurinburg-Maxton Army Air Force Base in NC until they shipped out for the UK on December 25, 1943. He served with the 436th for 19 months in Europe, dropping paratroops, towing gliders, evacuating wounded including some Germans, and hauling cargo. He also flew POW’s back from Germany to Paris upon their liberation. While in England he was picked along with his crew for Pathfinder duties where he stayed until VE day, May 8, 1945. To return home they flew south to Africa, over the South Atlantic to South America, and then finally north to the USA. He was discharged from the Army in October of 1945. He flew only two assigned planes in Europe. The first was taken by another crew and they were all lost in an accident crashing into a hill in England in November of 1944. His second served him for the rest of the war. He lost touch with all his buddies until the reunions began late in his life when he attended as many as he could. He passed away November 25, 2006 at age 84. Judd After the loss of our 14 yd old Shepherd, Bear (whom we'd rescued from a homeless person when he was only 10 months old), I wanted to return to the breed I had been raised with: Airedale Terriers, not a common breed in Northern California. I wanted to rescue again, something I feel very strongly about, and thanks to Petfinder.com, makes it MUCH easier. For 4 months I checked Petfinder.com daily, with no success. The few under 1yr old, were snatched up almost before they hit the site and most were on the East Coast. In mid-September, I finally found our boy posted: 7 month old abandoned on a ranch in rural southern WA state. I fell in love with his face at 1st sight. I contacted the rescue to get his story and start the adoption process. Although they'd never done an out of state adoption, we proceeded. My husband thought I was crazy, flying from the Bay Area to WA to adopt a dog I'd never met in person. I just knew he be a perfect match for us and our two girls, then aged 9 yrs & 7 yrs. I booked a flight, hotel and rental car and planned my trip north. I arrived to meet a scared, only 35 lbs little boy. He huddled next to my leg while waiting to go to the vet for his final shots and sign off from the vet (paperwork required from the airline). I had already stopped at the PETCO near the airport to purchase a travel crate, food, toys, leash & collar to have with me. After finalizing his adoption, we left for the hotel (had to find one that allowed dogs) but had to pit stop again at PETCO for the food and water bowls I had forgotten on the 1st trip. We woke at 5am to head to the airport for our next experience. his crate had to be fully inspected by TSA and then I took him outside for one finally bathroom stop before the flight - he wasn't going to be out of his crate for almost 8 hours (connecting flight). We found a grassy spot, played for a bit and then tried to head back in. The moment his paws hit the vinyl floor, he dropped to a down-stay and would not move. I ended up carrying him back to his crate. 10 hours later, we finally arrived home to meet the family~what a sight! I don't think he'd ever been on tile before and he was so excited his little behind wiggled like an Aussie shepherd! We got some meat on his bones, cleared up a horrible ear infection and welcomed him to our family. Almost $4000 for the process/trip/supplies & vet trips, but worth every penny. The main idea was to be there to shoot & attend a fellow RF-er's wedding in Hanoi. I spend 5 days mostly alone in Hanoi. I had no prior planning on where I should be going or what I should be doing. Just booked a flight & the hotel & let the road take me for 5 days before I met up with Mai to head to Halong Bay. I enjoyed shooting there, the only thing that allowed me to get to places & navigate would be my iPhone with the GPS & just one pirated copy of Lonely Planet, Vietnam sold along the streets in Hanoi. Every morning before I got out of the hotel, read a couple of pages of Lonely Planet, Vietnam, routed the route on my iPhone & walked around for almost 4-5hours each day taking pictures & experiencing the local culture. Most of the locals called me "dien" which meant "mad" in Vietnamnese as in the daily average of 15 degree celsius, I was only wearing T-shirts, berms. I got quite a fair bit of stares from all the locals as they were all wrapped up in their jackets etc. The old quarter where I stayed in was an amazing place & that was the place where the wonderful street life takes place. From 5am-11pm, there was plenty to shoot all round. I guess the only problem there would be communication as the Vietnamese people do not actually speak English well. I nearly got robbed on my first night in Hanoi as some dodgy looking girl came up to me & tried to pick my pocket while talking to me. Threw her a nice Lennox Lewis heavy right hook to her face & broke her nose! ha!!!! Other than that incident that took place, Hanoi was just perfect. The street side food, the weather, it was all perfect! Didn't wanna come home at all! These are my documentation of life in Hanoi, I hope you all enjoy them! first step 06 25 2007 - Luz Estephanie Machiavello, 5, and her father Hilmer are greeted at Tampa International Airport on Monday by CardioStart representatives Kerry Yonushonis (left), her 7-month-old son Lucca, and Eliana Morla after arriving from Lima, Peru. Estephanie lost her right arm in a moped accident in January. After a 14-hour journey to a hospital from her village in the jungle, doctors were able to reattach it. When the doctors decided they needed to re-amputate the arm, Estephanie had suffered three months of treatment for an infection that became gangrenous. "She was so tired and wanted to go home, she said, 'I don't care, just cut it off.'" Yonushonis recounted. Morla, a CardioStart representative in Lima, met Estephanie in the hospital and helped arrange her trip here for eight weeks of medical procedures. CardioStart provides education and medical supplies through volunteer teams of health care experts to countries experiencing conflict, natural disaster or economic disadvantage. The Shriners of Tampa have volunteered to pay for her prosthetic arm as well as a new prosthesis she will need every six to eight months until she is 18. The Machiavellos took a 6 hour boat ride and 20 hour bus trip from their village to reach Lima this weekend. American Airlines donated the flight to Tampa. Hilmer is a farmer, and the family of six will be without his income for the next two months. Donations can be made to a CardioStart account in Estephanie's name at the Royal Bank Centura of Brandon to support the family at home in Peru. Taiyuan Train Station Evening descends on Taiyuan's Train Station. It looks nice now but try waiting with hundreds of people in one of 30 lines for over an hour with no air conditioning in a room designed like a greenhouse on a midsummer day with temperatures near a hundred degrees outside, and much higher inside. At least we weren't the only ones suffering. After all that waiting for a ticket to Beijing, we found they had none. So we went to the airport and got a flight back to Beijing. Strangely when we arrived at the airport the airline didn't accept credit cards (even a Chinese credit card) and the airport had no ATM despite being almost as large as Sea-Tac airport in the U.S., fortunately an ATM was found in time and we barely made our flight. Many people without our resources just slept on the concrete in front of the train station with all their belongings. Sleeping at the airport It had been a long and hot day in Puerto Vallarta, and the dude was just plain tuckered out. Flamingos Take Flight The photo really doesn't do them justice! Hialeah's Flamingos Since their introduction to Hialeah Park in 1933, these exotic, colorful birds have become a widely recognized trademark of Hialeah Park and South Florida. In fact, when the Florida Lottery was started in 1986, lottery officials used the iconic Hialeah flamingo as part of their official logo in the hopes of providing Floridians with a familiar image they could tie to gambling. The Flamingos were also frequently used as the backdrop for major feature films and television shows, including the opening of the hit show “Miami Vice” and the feature films “The Champ” and the hit “Let It Ride”. As much a Hialeah staple now as they were then, the Flamingos will once again take to the air in a breathtaking spectacle known as “The Flight of the Flamingos” when live racing returns to Hialeah Park on November 28th. The flamingo colony itself was hatched and raised all at the race track. In fact, Hialeah Park is the only place the species has been successfully reproduced outside its wild state. For that reason, the infield area of the racetrack was deemed a National Audubon Sanctuary. Related to the heron family, the flamingo is a wading bird, preferring to live in shallow marshlands. Each spring, the birds nest on volcano-shaped mounds of clay built in a shallow pool on their infield lake. The female flamingo lays one egg a year and both parents take turns tending to the nest during the incubation period, which is usually about 30 days. When the small, greyish-white baby bird is hatched, it will eat its shell as a first meal. The colony itself has been used as a way of spreading Flamingos throughout North America, with birds donated to zoos in Miami and St Louis, as well as to Hollywood Park racetrack in Inglewood, California. I think these are finches. I'll need to ask my dad to be sure. They've had some very rare birds appear at their crossroads in Colorado. These are the "locals." The Stare.. I was late for my flight to Mumbai, came across this beautiful huge urban fish market in the Heart of Kolkata, couldnt resist and out came my camera. I click from a distance so no-one feels my presence, but after a few clicks he noticed me. He didnt seem friendly and gave me a bitter stare. I didnt know what to do, so i continued clicking through my viewfinder. I was hesitant but i showed him a "thums-up", asking for his approval... In Remembrance of 9/11 Re-upload. _____________________________ So...I was hoping for something much better than this. I had lots of ideas, which unfortunately I just did not have the time to carry through today :( I feel quite bad. But hopefully I will take them and post them sometime soon. I want to take this space in order to express my gratitude to every hero, and my care for those who had to lose someone. I wrote this a few days ago, I'm not really much of a writer, so excuse that...but these are basically just the thoughts of a teenage American on 9/11. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Ten years ago to this day, 2,900 innocent lives were lost. Not only were these individuals killed, but in a way that none should have to spend their last minutes, nor in a way that any loved one should have to say goodbye. Some were victims of this tragedy, others victims of their very own bravery, heroism, and patriotism. These heros had not super-powers but the ones every man is given, and that each man must individually chose to embrace: love, courage, and faith. "Greater love has no one that this, that he lay down his life for his friends." These men and women proved that not only did they see their neighbors as friends, but as brothers. And in doing so, whether consciously or not, portrayed an extraordinary image of the ultimate sacrifice our Savior gave for us. Now as we're coming into the 10th year of remembering every one affected by this tragedy, we keep our pride low and our heads high, looking towards the hope we have in God. As we tear down the walls between us, we build the strength of our country. In attempt to blow out our candle, terrorism instead has inflamed it, making it brighter, fiercer, and stronger, spreading it like a passionate wildfire across our nation. So as we remember, care, pray, and love, we will do it as "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." 204/365 - Top 5 worst airport experiences Oh man. Saturday totally sucked. I got up early from Rich's house, had to run some last minute errands to get some stuff for Adriana. There's always a set of random food items that we buy when we're in the US and I had to pick them up. I got to the airport super early as I always do, and was greeted by absolute total and utter chaos. Microsoft apparently had had their sales convention in Denver and basically 15,000 people were flying out at the same time. It was nuts. I waited in line for an hour and a half to check in, then another 45 minutes to get through security. And I was at the airport 3 hours early, which of course most people don't do. So this meant that a huge group of people missed their flights, which created more chaos, and they had to wait in more lines, etc. It was absolutely unreal. But I survived and made it home to my baby in one piece! Sarah and Tom's Walt Disney World Top 30 Must Sees - #28 Hi and Welcome back to the Walt Disney World Top 30 Must Sees. The countdown that focuses on the top 30 things that Sarah and I are looking forward to doing on our August trip to Walt Disney World. Over at Disney's Hollywood Studios is our next stop, where we have an attraction with as more laughs than one of Fozzi's shows. This is a visionary attraction that has incredible depth. MuppetVision in 3D, to be precise! MuppetVision 3D is next on the countdown, and Sarah and I cannot wait to experience this again. From its overflow queue (ever seen it?) to the preshow area to the main show itself, MuppetVision has it all! While I generally like the Muppets because I am intriguied both by puppets and by talking cartoon animals, Sarah informs me that the Muppets have a biting comedic wit that is unparalleled. I'm not sure what that means, but I think she's insinuating that they're funny! So to is their attraction. MuppetVision has some excellent depth and gags--and the show building takes "Disney Details" to the next level. Another reason we look forward to the attraction is because it is one of the few things at Disney's Hollywood Studios that doesn't typically have lengthy wait times while we are there. If that isn't enough, the attraction has an orchestra of penguins, and even the Big Cheese himself, Mickey the...Rat...makes an appearance! Its an attraction so undeniably entertaining that even Statler and Waldorf crack a smile! We don't even harbor resentment against Gonzo the Great for lending his voice to annoying Figment (version 3 of the attraction) over in EPCOT. Now if only they would build that Great Muppet Movie Ride... Walt Disney World Monorail - Monorail Black Walt Disney World's Monorail Black arrives at the Transportation and Ticket Center.
