Wasps In The Cold Room
two wasps, sisters, waiting to be marked with paint in "The Cold Room" as we call it. Its just a big walk-in refrigerator, at about 33 degrees F. The wasps have to cool, or they'll be real mad when you go to mark them for your study.
These wasps are of the Genus/species Polistes dominulus, a European species that's invasive here in Michigan. It appeared about 15 years ago here, and has really flourished, fairing better than the native wasp species.
Fridge Close-up
The little black child is chalkware. He or she used to have earrings but I took them out...I thought it looked cuter!
The Luzianne tin was $1 because it has a hole cut in the top to make it a bank. Hey! I'll take it! The kitty head on top had it's paint stripped off and was missing it's whiskers. I threaded silver beading wire through. He has a hole in his head...I think he was a toothpick holder. The hole is about that size.

Mike, Aug. 24
Mike, who works in our contact center, grows hops for making beer. Mike says: "The amount of hops you need varies, depending on the type of beer you are brewing. The crop in the picture should be enough for several batches of IPA, which uses plenty of hops. At harvest, I spread a clean tarp on the ground, cut the vines off the poles and lay them on the tarp. Then, I pick the hops and put them in a clean plastic bag. They can be used right away while they are still green. You can also freeze them. First, spread them on a clean surface in the sun to dry. Once dry, packed them in air-tight freezer bags and store in the freezer."
Blower Door Test
We depressurize the home to determine the level of air infiltration. This shows us how "leaky" your home is and what areas of the home need to be air sealed to keep the conditioned air inside instead of escaping through wall penetrations.

Nesting Boxes/Food storage framed, floored and roofed.
Was out for half the day, so I only got as far as building the frame, floors and roof for the nesting boxes and the food storage.
Tomorrow I'll finish the last of the framing (somebody decided today they want the areas I was going to fill in with mesh to be siding instead. So I'll have to build in a little triangular frame in those two spots now.)
Then the siding starts! Whee!

Rauzan Gaussies Margaux 1998
Got this as a Christmas gift, it came all the way across the pond from Paris. I've been holding onto it for over a year or so because I figure a Bordeaux deserves to be cellared for at least a while and would be best saved for a nice steak.
This one, not being a top tier Margaux, probably only has 10-12 years in it I'm guessing, but I still haven't had good luck with when to open wines that I've been sitting on for a while. (Maybe it's time to spring for a refrigerated cabinet.)
Happy, happy, joy, joy
I just LOVE it when my fridge is full. It makes me feel all different kinds of content with the world.
I am a SAHM, this and empty plates are my performance indicators LoL

REFRIGERATION CHECK VALVE - CHECK VALVE
REFRIGERATION CHECK VALVE - GE MONOGRAM REFRIGERATOR WATER FILTER - CARRIER REFRIGERATION UNITS.
Refrigeration Check Valve
- the process of cooling or freezing (e.g., food) for preservative purposes
- (refrigerant) any substance used to provide cooling (as in a refrigerator)
- deliberately lowering the body's temperature for therapeutic purposes; "refrigeration by immersing the patient's body in a cold bath"
- A check valve, clack valve, non-return valve or one-way valve is a mechanical device, a valve, which normally allows fluid (liquid or gas) to flow through it in only one direction.
- A mechanical device in a pipe that permits the flow of water or air in one direction only.
- A valve that closes to prevent backward flow of liquid
- Limits the flow of gas to one direction only. Use a check valve between the bubbler and generator to prevent unwanted pressure build up in the generator, and a safety against a low level bubbler. A check valve, such as used on torches, is recommended.
How it looks once you dry the floor
The white thing to the left/bottom foreground
is the water heater.
The pvc pipe to the center with
the check valve is the waste water pipe.
Because this part of the house is
"below grade", any waste water
in this part of the house
must be pumped up and out
in order to get to the septic tank outside
which is below ground, but above
the level of the floor in this part of the house.
Water, as the high school chemistry teachers
tell us, "seeks it's own level".
A more accurate phrase for this situation would be
an old Army addage...
"$h*t rolls down hill".
The pvc pipe to the right of the waste water
pipe is merely a vent. It allows noxious vapors
to pass outside, all the way up to the roof where
the wind disperses them.
Just above my toe is the clean out port
which allows access to the waste water pipes
in the house for using a snake to clear blockages.
That doesn't look right
The beginning of the story
starts here. The rubber sleeves
enclose the joint between
the check valve and the pvc pipe.
The check valve keeps waste water
from flowing back down the pipe
and into the pump.
My guess is the sleeve on top
is probably the original one, dating
back to when the house was built
in 1997.
Over time the rubber ages and bulges
and becomes less than water tight.
When you put the joint under a load
like when you run a newer model
washing machine, you get a lot of water
where you don't want it.
