The executives at General Motors including engineers, division heads, and sales executives, viewed Earl's conceptual ideas as flamboyant and unfounded. Earl struggled to legitimize his design approach against the tradition and production-oriented executives.

He authorized the Frank Hershey design for the 1948 Cadillac, which incorporated the first automotive tailfins. Inspiration for the fins came from the Lockheed P-38 Lightning. The style caught on throughout Detroit and eventually led to competition between Earl and Virgil Exner over the size and complexity of tailfins, culminating with those on the 1959 Cadillac.

Earl was born in Hollywood, California and was the last of a dying breed in American automotive stylistic creation.

It could be not my problem because I quit smoking some years ago, but some day I was invited to the flickr group named "Cigarettes don't kill, cameras kill". And there it says: "People say that cigarettes are bad for you. Who cares, you look great smoking them!!"
Well... Looks like truth. The images of smoking people sometimes are more moody and spectacular than regular portraits...
So... smoke in "jet"style and look as an ancient God surrounded by clouds... or quit and may be live a little longer (I can't promise it ).
