Jean Kent Dutch postcard by HEMO. Photo: Eagle Lion. Jean Kent (1921) is a strawberry-blonde British actress who played spiteful hussies or femmes fetales in 1940's and 1950's British films. She was born into showbusiness with her parents working the Music Halls and was a dancer from the age of 11. She made her debut film appearance with an uncredited bit role in The Rocks of Valpre (1935, Henry Edwards). When times got tough in the depression she joined at the age of fifteen the chorus at the infamous Windmill Theatre. It took her success in the stage review Apple Sauce to get her noticed. Her first real film break came in It's That Man Again (1943, Walter Forde) and another turning point came when she signed to Gainsborough Pictures and played a dramatic part in Fanny by Gaslight (1944, Anthony Asquith). Jean Kent matured from a pretty bit of decoration into a sexy femme fatale. She now seems to be in more of the Gainsborough melodramas than any other actor, but at the time she was less appreciated. Although she got fifth billing in Fanny, she moved down to eighth for both Madonna of the Seven Moons (1945, Arthur Crabtree) and The Wicked Lady (1945, Leslie Arliss). Gradually the studio got the message that audiences liked her and improved her billing. Her first co-starring role came opposite Stewart Granger in Caravan (1946, Arthur Crabtree), and further prominent roles followed including The Man Within (1947, Bernard Knowles), Good Time Girl (1948, David MacDonald), and an opportunity to return to her theater roots in Trottie True (1949, Brian Desmond Hurst). The 1950’s began with prominent appearances in two Anthony Asquithfilms; The Woman in Question (1950) and The Browning Version (1951). Though the last film was a success, and she was excellent in it, she now blames her decision to play a woman ten years older than herself for the premature end to her film career. She turned to theater and television and kept busy. Source: BritishPictures.com, BritMovie.co.uk, Wikipedia and IMDb. Morning After After a night on the town, all "Huggy" wanted was his Valpre.
