DWCC at Night DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF CALAPAN The history of the Divine Word College of Calapan as a Catholic institution of higher learning traces its roots back to the missionary work of Fr. Benito Rixner, SVD and other missionaries of the Society of the Divine Word in Mindoro. Mindoro Junior College, as the school was originally called, was established in April 1946. The formal opening of classes in first year Normal Education, Liberal Arts, Pre-Law, and special short-term courses in Typing and Stenography was on July 1,1946. There were thirty-seven students as first enrollees. The first floor of the old bishop’s residence was used for classrooms by the students and ten faculty members. The biggest room served as library with around a thousand volumes coming from other SVD schools and the rest from donations. The regular residence rooms were used as classrooms while the smallest room became the Registrar’s Office. Athletic activities were held at the church plaza. In 1953, Fr. Albert Cook, SVD who was the Director at that time constructed a two-storey building on a lot purchased adjacent to the two original buildings. Construction was completed just in time for the school year 1953-1954. By that time, there were three buildings being occupied by about a thousand students. The buildings became functional until the summer of 1964. From 1954 to 1964 there was a steady increase in enrolment that a bigger space was a felt need. Through the efforts of Bishop William Duschak, SVD, DD, a man of foresight and dynamism who went to Europe to ask for donations from friends and benefactors, the dream of having a modern college in a spacious compound materialized. During the school year 1964-1965 all classes were moved to the new campus-a very imposing building built along modern architectural lines. About the same time, the Elementary Department was inaugurated by virtue of the Temporary Permit No. 96. In 1975, the President, Fr. Eleuterio S. Lacaron, SVD, also introduced the School Campaign Program which proved to be an effective promotional strategy of the college. In 1976, permission was granted by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECS) for the revival of the Graduate School program which was phased out in 1972. Meanwhile the college curriculum was further diversified with the inclusion of the short- term courses and the offering of traditional fields of concentration in the degree programs .With the advent of the 1980’s, more vigorous efforts were directed not only to improve the school facilities, but also to acquire additional site for future expansion. In 1980, the course in Master in Business Administration (MBA) was opened by virtue of Temporary Permit No.132, s. 1985 dated July 1980 with 47 students and three professors. Its subsequent recognition was granted on June 1985 and signed by the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Jaime C. Laya. In January 1981, the name of the college was changed from Mindoro College to Divine Word College of Calapan; thus, making it more representative of the educational apostolate of the Society of the Divine Word in the province of Oriental Mindoro. In 1987, having satisfactorily met the standards and requirements of the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU), the Divine Word College of Calapan was granted Level II accreditation for five years. On April 2, 1993 another Level II accreditation was granted. A re-accreditation was given in 1998. A non-degree program in Computer Science was opened during the administration of Fr. Joel L. Maribao, to give the youth the opportunity to learn the new technology. The Associate in Computer Data Processing (ACDP) was recognized during the school year 1994-1995, while the two-year course in Computer System and Business Management (CSBM) was given Permit No. TV-P 059, s. 1994. In 1995, the Civil Engineering Department was acknowledged as Number 1 in the regional level (Region IV) and Number 10 in the National level on account of the high percentage of board passers. This was published in the Philippine Star dated June 13, 1995. Another honor was received by DWCC as per CHED Memorandum No. 76, s. 1995, where DWCC was selected as Center for Excellence in Teacher Education in Region IV. It was also during the time of Fr. Eleuterio S. Lacaron, SVD (1994-1995), that DWCC was selected by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) as Institute of Local Government Academy (ILGA) in Oriental Mindoro. During the administration of Fr. Romeo P. Bancale, SVD, the Graduate School Department was granted permission to offer two new graduate programs, Master in Public Administration and Doctor of Philosophy in Management, by virtue of the Government Recognition Nos. 27 and 28, s. 1997, and made effective in the school year 1997-1998. It was also in that same year that the High School Department moved out from the main campus to the Janssen campus located in Brgy. Contribution: A&D Faculty Retrospective 1960–2011 The contributions and work of the art & design faculty at Ohio Northern University will open Friday, June 3 at the Elzay Gallery of Art during ONU’s Alumni Weekend. The exhibit, “Contribution: A&D Faculty Retrospective,” will be on display June 3–17, 2011. The exhibition coincides with the department’s celebration of its 50th anniversary of the BA degree in art. This special, yearlong series of exhibitions, lectures and special events recognizes the work of its faculty members, the success of its graduates, and the tremendous growth in the program’s reputation in the art & design communities. Considering the horrible day - we shot outside at Goose Lake in March 2009 right after a snowstorm passed through the area - and it was freezing outside - Lauren was a blast. Positive attitude, creative, flexible, and she didn't turn blue until the end of the shoot. I hope to do some more shoots with here - she is a very fun and photogenic young lady. Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items (often with symbolic significance) in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and paintings. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics, and even disciplines such as history and psychology analyze its relationship with humans and generations. Traditionally, the term art was used to refer to any skill or mastery. This conception changed during the Romantic period, when art came to be seen as "a special faculty of the human mind to be classified with religion and science". Generally, art is made with the intention of stimulating thoughts and emotions. Evaluation Philosopher Richard Wollheim distinguishes three approaches to assessing the aesthetic value of art: the realist, whereby aesthetic quality is an absolute value independent of any human view; the objectivist, whereby it is also an absolute value, but is dependent on general human experience; and the relativist position, whereby it is not an absolute value, but depends on, and varies with, the human experience of different humans. An object may be characterized by the intentions, or lack thereof, of its creator, regardless of its apparent purpose. A cup, which ostensibly can be used as a container, may be considered art if intended solely as an ornament, while a painting may be deemed craft if mass-produced. The nature of art has been described by Wollheim as "one of the most elusive of the traditional problems of human culture". It has been defined as a vehicle for the expression or communication of emotions and ideas, a means for exploring and appreciating formal elements for their own sake, and as mimesis or representation. Leo Tolstoy identified art as a use of indirect means to communicate from one person to another. Benedetto Croce and R.G. Collingwood advanced the idealist view that art expresses emotions, and that the work of art therefore essentially exists in the mind of the creator. The theory of art as form has its roots in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, and was developed in the early twentieth century by Roger Fry and Clive Bell. Art as mimesis or representation has deep roots in the philosophy of Aristotle. More recently, thinkers influenced by Martin Heidegger have interpreted art as the means by which a community develops for itself a medium for self-expression and interpretation. Definition Britannica Online defines art as "the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others." By this definition of the word, artistic works have existed for almost as long as humankind: from early pre-historic art to contemporary art; however, some theories restrict the concept to modern Western societies. Seldom do I pause to answer criticism of my work and ideas. If I sought to answer all the criticisms that cross my desk, my secretaries would have little time for anything other than such correspondence in the course of the day, and I would have no time for constructive work. We readily consented, and when the hour came we lived up to our promise. So I, along with several members of my staff, am here because I was invited here I am here because I have organizational ties here. But more basically, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. Just as the prophets of the eighth century B.C. left their villages and carried their "thus saith the Lord" far beyond the boundaries of their home towns, and just as the Apostle Paul left his village of Tarsus and carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the Greco-Roman world, so am I. compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own home town. Like Paul, I must constantly respond to the Macedonian call for aid. Moreover, I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial "outside agitator" idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds. You deplore the demonstrations taking place In Brimingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the city's white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative. In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist; negotiation; self- purification; and direct action. We have gone through an these steps in Birmingham. There can be no gainsaying the fact that racial injustice engulfs this community. Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States. Its ugly record of brutality is widely known. Negroes have experienced grossly unjust treatment in the courts. There have been more unsolved bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than in any other city in the nation. These are the hard, brutal facts of the case. On the basis of these conditions, Negro .leaders sought to negotiate with the city fathers. But the latter consistently refused to engage in good-faith negotiation. Then, last September, came the opportunity to talk with leaders of Birm Underground Serbian Orthodox Church, Coober Pedy, SA The Eastern Orthodox Churches trace their roots back to the Apostles and Jesus Christ. Apostolic succession established the seats of Patriarchy (for example see the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem). Orthodoxy reached its golden age during the high point of the Byzantine Empire, taken over by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the Serbian Orthodox Church before it continued to flourish in Russia after the Fall of Constantinople. Numerous autocephalous churches have been established in Eastern Europe and Slavic areas. Four stages of development can be distinguished in the history of the Orthodox Churches. The first three centuries, through the age of Constantine the Great constitute the apostolic and ancient period. The medieval period, beginning with the period of the First seven Ecumenical Councils, comprises almost ten centuries from the death of Constantine to the Fall of Constantinople. The age of captivity (under Islam) starts, roughly, for the Greek and Balkan communities in the fifteenth century with the Fall of Constantinople, and ends about the year 1830, which marks Greek and Serbian independence from the Ottoman Empire. The last stage is the modern period. The Orthodox Churches with the largest number of adherents in modern times are the Russian and the Romanian Orthodox churches. The most ancient of the Orthodox churches of today are the Churches of Constantinople, Alexandria (which includes all of Africa), Georgia, Antioch, and Jerusalem.[1][2][3] Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia, 846 kilometres north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway. At the 2006 census its population was 1,916 (1,084 males, 832 females, including 268 indigenous Australians).[1] The town is known as the opal capital of the world because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there. It is also famous for most of the residents living below ground, mostly in old mines refurbished, due to the scorching daytime heat. The name 'Coober Pedy' comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which means 'whitemans hole' 'waterhole'.[2] Aboriginal people have a long-standing connection with the area. The first explorer to pass near the site of Coober Pedy was Scottish born John McDouall Stuart in 1858, but the town was not established until after 1915, when opal was discovered by Willie Hutchinson.[3] Miners first moved in around about 1916. The harsh summer desert temperatures mean that many residents prefer to live in caves bored into the hillsides. A standard three-bedroom cave home with lounge, kitchen, and bathroom can be excavated out of the rock in the hillside for a similar price to a house on the surface. It remains at a constant temperature, whereas surface living needs air-conditioning, especially during the summer months, when temperatures often exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). The relative humidity rarely gets over 20% on these hot days, and the skies are usually cloud-free. The average maximum temperature is 30-32 degrees Celsius, but it can get quite cool in the winter. Coober Pedy is a very small town, roughly halfway between Adelaide and Alice Springs, that has become a popular stopover point and tourist destination, especially since the completion of the sealing of the Stuart Highway in 1987. Interesting attractions in Coober Pedy include the mines, the graveyard, and the underground churches. The first tree ever seen in the town was welded together from scrap iron. It still sits on a hilltop overlooking the town. The local golf course - mostly played at night with glowing balls, to avoid daytime temperatures - is completely free of grass, and golfers take a small piece of "turf" around to use for teeing off. As a result of correspondence between the two clubs, the Coober Pedy golf club is the only club in the world to enjoy reciprocal rights at The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.[4] Both the town and its hinterland, for different reasons, are very photogenic and have therefore attracted film makers. The town itself was the setting for the 2006 film Opal Dream. The hinterland, notably the Breakaways and Moon Plain, have featured as backdrops in films including Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Red Planet, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Pitch Black and Salute of the Jugger which made considerable use of locals as extras. Coober Pedy also featured in the second season of the TV series, The Amazing Race. The book Wildfire by Chris Ryan includes Coober Pedy but states that there are only 3 buildings on the surface and the rest of the town is underground. The music video for INXS's "Kiss The Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain)" was shot at Moon Plains. Jenni Jenni is a friend of mine from when I was growing up in Mexico City. When I came back to visit, she was my tour guide. During our time apart, she went on to get her Industrial Design degree and went to work with the family business. This day was pretty funny because this pretty splash of pink was out checking drab warehouses full of aluminum artifacts. The cone in the background is one of her first designs and is still a popular item in the parks district of Mexico City. This is the first picture where I have actually gone through and done some touching up beyond a simple global contrast and color adjustment. I darkened the background and punched up the pink in her lips and sweater to provide the exaggerated effect present in my mind's eye that day. Jenni is half Mexican, half Sweedish, and 100% gorgeous! and so begins the adventure After a 15 year hiatus, I have returned to Auburn University to complete my Industrial Design degree. Here I'm sketching a chair sitting on a table in the front of class (right in front of the Auburn logo on the projection screen). CLE5 Hello everyone. Thanks for logging in and thanks to the SL Bar Association as well as Kate Fitz for providing respectively the space and CLE accreditation that brings us all here today. We have lots of ground to cover so I think its best that we begin… Avatars are used in a number of ways, but more and more often avatar names are being used as designations of goods and services in virtual environments so it becomes important for us to analyze the existing structures that support their protection, namely as trademarks under both in common law and federal regimes as well as internationally under publicity and privacy statutes. As the Internet has become a common tool of trade and commerce, the use of avatar names as designations of the source of goods and services has become more commonplace. Today we’ll discuss some issues surrounding the use of avatars as graphic characters, as well as existing protection and enforcement mechanisms. Diving right in we’ll begin with AVATAR NAMES AS DOMAINS AND THEN COMMON LAW MARKS Lets consider SEVEN IMPORTANT ISSUES CONCERNING USE OF AVATAR NAMES AND GAINING COMMON LAW TRADEMARK STATUS I relevant terms of service provisions II the theory of territorial protection for common law trademarks, the traditional way of using a mark, and how marks are now being used on the Internet. III how common law mark owners traditionally prove use, and how they would go about proving such use on the Internet. IV the Natural Expansion Doctrine, how it is applied to common law marks, and what impact the Internet might have upon this doctrine. V the Lanham Act, the problems that emerge when a common law mark owner can prove continuous prior use, and how the Internet might affect this issue VI how and why common law trademark territorial rights are likely to be affected as more and more trademark owners place their marks on the Internet and finally VII use in commerce Lets talk about that last issue for a second. Proving a mark’s use requires showing that it has a “Zone of Actual Goodwill”—namely an area in which the mark has come to be identified with its user’s goods or services. Within this zone, courts will afford redress or relief on the grounds that a party has a valuable interest in the goodwill of their trade or business and to the extent that the trademark is adopted to maintain and extend that trade or business. When infringement occurs within that zone, it normally consists of the sale of the goods of one manufacturer or vendor for those of another. The first subpart is the “Zone of Actual Market Penetration.” Here courts have determined that a party should be awarded ownership of a mark in a specific geographic area only when the party’s mark achieves market penetration that is significant enough to pose a real likelihood of confusion among the consumers in that area. To determine market penetration, courts will most often examine a party’s sales, advertising, and reputation in that area. In Natural Footwear, for example, the Third Circuit considered four distinct factors to determine whether a trademark had successfully penetrated an area’s market: 1) the volume of sales of the trademarked product, 2) the growth trends (both positive and negative) in the area, 3) the number of persons actually purchasing the product in relation to the potential number of customers, and 4) the amount of product advertising in the area. The second subpart is the “Zone of Reputation”—that is an area in which a mark’s reputation has been carried by word of mouth and/or by advertisements. This zone can also represent a protectable area for the trademark user. In one case, for example, the Ninth Circuit suggested that it was willing to enjoin an infringing user where the legitimate user’s reputation extended into the infringer’s area at the time the infringer adopted its mark. In most instances, however, the “Zone of Reputation” will not be the sole determinative factor. Theoretically, trademark protection should not extend beyond the area of market penetration. In contrast as a point of comparison, the amount of contact needed within a particular state to prove personal jurisdiction does not really differ from the amount of contact needed to prove market penetration. Assuming that relative quantity is not an issue, the two tests ask many of the same objective questions. In the first instance, the inquiries are made concerning the defendant party. In the other, they are made concerning the mark itself. Since there are no cases on point regarding the market penetration of Internet marks, courts will have the opportunity to make this analogy. Chances are, they will find it quite useful. Thus, a common law trademark owner, after placing his mark on the Internet, could successfully argue that the Internet has facilitated the penetration of his mark into a particular market area. He was a founder of Texas Instruments. With his wife Ida Green, he was a philanthropist who helped found the University of Texas at Dallas, Green College at the University of British Columbia, St. Mark's School of Texas, and Green College at the University of Oxford. They were also major contributors to the Cecil H. Green Library at Stanford University, and the Cecil & Ida Green Building for earth sciences at MIT (designed by I.M. Pei).[1] Born in Whitefield, a suburb of Bury in Lancashire, England, in 1900, Mr. Green and his family migrated to Nova Scotia, Toronto, and San Francisco. There, as a witness to the great 1906 San Francisco earthquake, young Cecil received his first lesson in geophysics, the field in which he would make his fortune. The family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, until young Cecil went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning both a bachelor's and master's degree in electrical engineering in 1924.[2][3][4] Cecil met Ida in 1923, while working on his master's thesis at the General Electric Research Center in Schenectady, New York, he met Ida Flansburgh. They were married for 60 years until Ida died in 1986. The couple crisscrossed the country five times, making their home in auto camps and tents. Cecil worked as an engineer for electronics companies. He unsuccessfully tried to sell neon signs in Canada. He answered want ads for jobs selling everything from insurance to automobiles. But once he found a job in geophysical exploration, his fortune was all but made. In 1930, the Greens moved to Oklahoma where Cecil accepted a job from Eugene McDermott as chief of a seismographic field crew for the newly organized GSI. Founded in May 1930 in Dallas, Texas, GSI was one of the first independent prospecting companies established to perform reflection seismic exploration for petroleum. In 1941, Mr. Green and three partners – J. Erik Jonsson, Eugene McDermott and H.B. Peacock – bought GSI when they heard that the owners planned to sell the oil production unit. Mr. Green borrowed money, took out a mortgage, committed his and Ida's insurance policies as collateral and scraped together everything they owned to pay his share. The deal went through on December 6, 1941, the day before Pearl Harbor was bombed. It just so happened that GSI had developed a towed magnetometer for oil exploration. It was not particularly useful for finding oil but very useful indeed for finding enemy submarines. GSI continued to prosper. Under the leadership of Mr. Green and his team, which by the end of the decade included Pat Haggerty, GSI became a geophysical exploration service leader. But it was the electronics work begun during World War II that was to make important technology history. In 1951, the company's name was changed to Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI), and GSI became a wholly owned subsidiary of TI. Mr. Green served as vice president (1941-1951), president (1951-1955) and chairman of GSI (1955-1959). He also served as vice president and director of Texas Instruments and in 1976 was named honorary director of the company. Today, Texas Instruments is one of the world's leading designers and suppliers of digital signal processing and analog technologies, the engines driving the Internet age. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, TI in 2004 had $12.6 billion in revenues ($10.9B Semiconductor) with more than 34,000 employees worldwide. He died in 2003 at the age of 102. [edit] Philanthropy The growth of TI made Cecil Green an enormously wealthy man, and he and Ida quickly set about giving his wealth away. The Green's philanthropic efforts totalled over $200 million, and most of this money was given to education and medicine. He was given an honorary knighthood in 1991 (at age 91) by Queen Elizabeth II. One gift was the founding of the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green branch of the University of California Systemwide Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP). This branch is located at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.[5] Some of Green's philanthropy at the University of British Columbia (UBC) was encouraged by William Carleton Gibson, a neurologist in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Both Gibson and Green referred to Gibson as "Cecil Green's most expensive friend" due to his encouragement to fund the Cecil and Ida Green Visiting Professorship and Green College, University of British Columbia. In 1998, the UBC Alumni Association gave Green and Gibson alumni "Lifetime Achievement Awards" in recognition of their support for the University.[6] Jennifer Roberts Jennifer Roberts, At-Large Jennifer Watson Roberts is Chair of the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, serving her fourth term in office. She serves on numerous boards and advisory groups in the region, including the Governor’s Crime Commission, the Governor’s Local Government Advisory Council, the NC Association of County Commissioners, the Centralina Council of Governments, the Charlotte Chamber, the Charlotte Regional Partnership, the Girls Scouts Hornets Nest Council, Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful, and the Women’s Commission. She also chairs the Metropolitan Transit Commission. Roberts has been Director of the Mayor’s International Cabinet, a lending officer in International Corporate Banking at First Union, and executive director of the Charlotte World Affairs Council. She has also taught courses in international politics and economics at UNC-Charlotte. She speaks Spanish, French, and some Italian, She is a native of Charlotte and a graduate of East Mecklenburg High School. She attended UNC-Chapel Hill on a Morehead Scholarship, and also holds two Masters Degrees in international affairs, from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and from the University of Toronto. OTTAWA RIVER ROCK SCULPTURES Ten minutes west of Parliament Hill, along the Ottawa River Parkway, you’ll find a watery gallery of limestone and granite sculptures that seem to defy gravity. “If you’ve ever played with Lego,” says 60-year-old John-Félice Ceprano, “this is a hell of a lot more fun.” It’s fun to watch, too, as Ceprano lifts stones and slabs to create "rock balance art.” Visitors gather at Remic Rapids Park from July to October to see an expanding collection of sculptures as Ceprano adds to his creation using only materials found on-site. Originally from Providence, Rhode Island, Ceprano studied physics with the goal of becoming a meteorologist. But he so enjoyed drawing daily weather maps, he decided, instead, to pursue a degree in fine arts at the University of Rhode Island. He spent his final year at the University of Ottawa, and the city captured his heart. Decades later, his work has become as much a community project as a personal one. Since 2000, it has been supported by the National Capital Commission, Ottawa’s federal land steward. But the heavy lifting has taken a toll on his body, and injuries to his feet and shoulders mean that he now occasionally works with assistants. “My goal is to get people reconnected with nature and the environment,” says Ceprano. "Involving other people liberates the energy.” In 2011, John Felice Ceprano will be celebrating 25 years of creating his rock sculptures! In that era you were not dressed for church unless you had on a hat. I always loved to copy my mother's Uncle Will (William Harrison), which is why I am using a tiny baseball bat as if it is a cane :-) This photo speaks about a number of things - boys imitating adult male family members, attire of the 1950s, the importance of baseball as THE SPORT of the 1950s. 1955 was the year Roy Campanella, Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers won the World Series. Adults were giving African-American and African-Canadian kids baseball bats, baseball gloves, etc to encourage them to be another Jackie Robinson (well, I wasn't quite that, but who could measure up to that standard?). William Harrison (known to most as "Pa Harrison") was married to a relative on my mother's mother's side of the family and also a brother of early 20th century actor, Richard Berry Harrison. He was featured on the cover of TIME magazine on March 4, 1935. The son of fugitive slaves, Harrison was born in London, Ontario, Canada, on September 28, 1864, the eldest of five siblings. Harrison's parents had escaped slavery through the Underground Railroad. His mother named him Richard after seeing a performance of Shakespeare's Richard III. Her interest in theatre placed Harrison on the way to becoming an actor. In his youth, he worked selling newspapers, and managed to work near a local London theatre where he would try to get to know the actors. Whenever he saved enough money he would attend the plays. His talents were recognized early in recitations that he would give at school and in church. After moving to Detroit, he began his dramatic studies at the Detroit Training School of Dramatic Art, and privately with British drama coach Edward Weitzel, drama editor for the Detroit Free Press. From 1892 to 1896, Harrison traveled the U.S., performing as a dramatic reader. Harrison’s repertoire included works from Shakespeare, and poetry from his friend Paul Lawrence Dunbar, including promotional tours for Dunbar's book Oak and Ivy' He married Gertrude Janet Washington in 1895; she was the first Black person to graduate from the Chicago Conservatory of Music. They had two children, Lawrence Gilbert and Marian Ysobel. Harrison became extremely well-known after playing "de Lawd" in more than 1,650 performances of Marc Connelly’s play, The Green Pastures, which opened on Broadway on February 26, 1930. The show ran for 16 months, then went on tour appearing in more than 203 cities and towns (including his hometown of London, Ontario, at the Grand Theatre) and later won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama for playwright Connelly in 1931. He taught elocution and dramatics courses at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College, Branch Normal in Arkansas, and Flipper-Key College in Oklahoma. Harrison died of heart failure in New York City, on March 14, 1935, 10 days after he was featured on the cover of TIME magazine. Accolades - Received the NAACP’s 1930 Spingarn Medal for Distinguished Achievement - On his 70th birthday in 1934, he was awarded an honorary Master of Arts degree from Howard University and honorary doctorate degrees in Dramatic Literature from North Carolina Agriculture and Technical College and Lincoln University, and he became the first actor ever to be awarded the Sigma Society Key from Boston University. He had shaken the hands of mayors and received congratulatory telegrams from 14 university presidents and seven governors, was praised by many religious leaders for his performance and was awarded an inscribed Bible from the Clergy Club of New York City - A public library in Raleigh, North Carolina, was named after Harrison in 1935. Carter Brown fell in love with the National Gallery of Art and first conceived of a career that would allow him to pursue his love for all the arts and to share them with a larger public. In his 23 years at the helm of the Gallery, he increased the collection by 20,000 works of art, including pieces by old masters and modern giants, from Leonardo da Vinci to Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, and Jackson Pollock. Combining rigorous scholarship with a unique theatrical flair, Brown instituted a series of dazzling special exhibitions. 1977's "Treasures of Tutankhamen," inaugurated a new era of "blockbuster" museum shows. In 1985, one exhibition alone, "Treasure Houses of Britain," attracted almost a million visitors. He also broadened the scope of the gallery beyond its traditional emphasis on European and North American art, with exhibitions of African sculpture, Chinese archaeological discoveries and the historic riches of Japan. Under Brown's leadership, the Gallery's annual attendance rose from 1.3 million in 1969 to almost 7 million visitors a year. Brown greatly expanded the Gallery's exhibition space, doubling its square footage. Perhaps his greatest triumph was the construction of the Gallery's East Building in 1978. I.M. Pei's angular modern design encountered fierce opposition from traditionalists and preservationists who feared it would spoil the view of the Capitol, but the finished building has become one of Washington's most popular cultural attractions, and one of the most admired buildings in America. Selected as one of the ten best building in America, it ignited an international trend of new museum buildings as innovative works of art. He ended his service to the Gallery on a high note, with "Circa 1492: Art in the Age of Exploration," an unprecedented extravaganza of art from five continents, marking the 500th anniversary of Columbus's voyage to the New World. After retiring from the National Gallery in 1992, he continued his crusade to bring the splendors of art to the mass public.
