Project 365: 248/365: The Long Haul, Part 3
Day 3 of my journey with my son Ted from home in St. Louis to San Diego, today from Jean, Nevada to San Diego. This photo is of a statue (perhaps 15 feet tall) of an old prospector at the Gold Strike Hotel and Gambling Hall in Jean, Nevada. We stopped there because Las Vegas was booked for Labor Day weekend, Jean is just a bit southwest of Las Vegas, and we were tired and hungry. The Gold Strike was affordable, comfortable, and had good and plentiful food. No internationally famous TV chef at its restaurant, but it was what we needed after ~13 hours on the road. I took this photo as we were pulling out of the parking lot on day 3, on our way to California.

DSCF2472
Oddfellows generally, for the term encompasses several different groupings, claim to be among the oldest fraternal and benevolent societies. Oddfellows were among the first friendly societies to begin to bring independent lodges into affiliation and to create networks of lodges answering to a Grand Lodge. Evidence for fraternal societies calling themselves 'Oddfellows' is claimed in England from the middle of the eighteenth century. Their histories adopt universally much earlier origins, linking themselves by means of supposed offshoots of medieval trades guilds to the Roman occupation of Britain and from Roman mutual support clubs to the Israelites in Babylon! Other traditions and 'facts' have become part of Oddfellow lore; they are mostly unsubstantiated by evidence.
Such extended histories are a common feature of affiliated orders. One reason for them was a desire to show 'permanence' - a long established mutual club might be a more attractive proposition than an organisation with no track record. Another was that the origin myth fostered an emotional link between a grand lodge, hundreds of local lodges and the thousands (later millions) of individual members - each generation could view themselves as the current embodiment of a great tradition. Both reasons acted to sustain membership in a sector that throughout the nineteenth century increased in both complexity, as new affiliated orders were created, and numbers, as more people were able to afford subscriptions. In reality, the main reason the Oddfellows flourished was because their benefits and the financial stability of the organisation were more attractive than many of their rivals. For example, travel warrants allowed free accommodation overnight in the premises of distant lodges, which was a boon to those searching for work. Through what was surely good fortune at first, their actuarial calculations were better than comparable societies establishing a form of positive feedback that encouraged expansion. Much of the growth was led by the Independent Order of Oddfellows (Manchester Unity) Friendly Society. This body was founded in 1810 (although recorded minutes do not begin until 1814). The headquarters of the organisation was Manchester; the main base of the Bolton Unity was that town.
William Pringle's apron, Loyal Tyneside Lodge of Oddfellows
Lodges of the Manchester Unity opened in East Lothian and Edinburgh in the 1840s, when Lodge Loyal Tyneside in Haddington, Lodge Loyal Hope in Dunbar and Heart of Midlothian in Edinburgh are all recorded. By 1875 the Oddfellows had acquired premises in Forrest Road, Edinburgh, for a meeting hall and offices. However, its first occupants appear to have been the Scottish Order of Oddfellows. The origins of this order are unknown, but within 10 years they shared their premises with the Edinburgh District Headquarters of the Manchester Unity, so relations between the Orders must have been fraternal. By 1900 a third Oddfellows organisation operated from Forrest Road, the National Independent Order of Oddfellows; a fourth, the Caledonian Order of United Oddfellows, had premises in Hope Street.
Witnessing with Fortitude
"Among these gifts of the Spirit there is one on which I wish to dwell this morning: the gift of Fortitude. In our time many extol physical force, to the extent of also approving the extreme forms of violence. In fact, man has daily experience of his own weakness, especially in the spiritual and moral sphere, yielding to the impulses of internal passions and external pressures.
Precisely to resist these multiple stimuli, it is necessary to have the virtue of fortitude, which is one of the four cardinal virtues on which the whole structure of the moral life rests. It is the virtue by which one does not compromise in fulfilling one's duty.
This virtue finds little room in a society in which surrender and accommodation on the one hand, and domination and toughness on the other, are widespread in economic, social and political relations. Timidity and aggressiveness are two forms of lack of fortitude which are often found in human behaviour; they result repeatedly in the distressing sight of one who is weak and cowardly towards the powerful, or of one who is arrogant and overbearing towards the defenceless.
Perhaps today as never before the moral virtue of fortitude needs the support of the corresponding gift of the Holy Spirit. The gift of Fortitude is a supernatural impulse which gives strength to the soul, not only on exceptional occasions such as that of martyrdom, but also in normal difficulties: in the struggle to remain consistent with one's principles: in putting up with insults and unjust attacks: in courageous perseverance on the path of truth and uprightness, in spite of lack of understanding and hostility.
When, like Jesus in Gethsemane, we experience "the weakness of the flesh" (cf. Mt 26:41; Mk 14:38), or rather, of human nature subject to physical and psychological infirmities, we should ask the Holy Spirit for the gift of Fortitude to remain firm and decisive on the path of goodness. Then we will be able to repeat with St Paul: "For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong" (1 Cor 12:10)".
- Pope Blessed John Paul II.

samurai, conch, moon
The ear catches the eye, Music in Japanese Prints, Hotei Publishing, Leiden.
38. Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-92), "The moon at Shizugadake-Hideyoshi". (Shizugadake no tsuki-Hideyoshi', from the series One-hundred aspects of the moon, (Tsuki no hyakushi), 1888 (originally issued 25/x/1888), Signed Yoshitoshi with seal Taiso, Blocks cut by Enkatsu Noguschi (sealed Enkatsu to), Published by Akiyama Bemon, Woodblock, oban, 360 x245, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag PRM-1988-002,
The military leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi, (1536-98) blows a conch shell (horagai) by moonlight at Mount Shizugadake.
The title, The Ear Catches the Eye, is what caught my attnetion more than the cover piece of a female figure playing a 3 stringed guitar-like instrument with a long neck, a shamisen. She must be a geisha. She's elaborately costumed. This book says geishas weren't prostitutes but rather entertainers adept in conversation and music. That's what I've always heard but, still, it's hard to believe they they didn't sell sex under the right circumstances. The individuals who performed the tea ceremony in tea houses were often prostitutes as were attendants in bathhouses. I went to Britannica and while the article mentioned various forms of entertainment, it said nothing about prostitution at all but toward the end, it said that the numbers of Geisha's are now dwindling because of the increased availability of "more casual sex". Whatever entertainment Geisha's offered, their presentation---music, clothing, make-up, hair, conversation--- was complexly, elaborately structured to cue imagination and desire. The availability of prostitutes made me think of the Mormon movie of brothels in India in which the movie makers took several children from the district where the prostitutes and their families lived and worked and tried to put them in school and to otherwise educate them toward higher cultural ideals. I recall thinking how it seemed impractical and vain to teach one of the young males photography in such a poverty stricken and morally depraved environment and to take the group horseback riding on an ocean beach but I guess the experience of the other is central to change. The movies said all of these children dropped out of schools which had been arranged for them but I don't think there has ever been a sequel to show the eventual outcome. Anyway, what I was trying to say, and I think I may yet go back up and tell about that movie about the Thai prostitute who described how she and her friend both had sexual intercourse with a wealthy Japanese man in a Jakarta hotel, is that the Chinese character for "to see" and "to hear" is the same. (I have to check that.) In this book, it has this interesting etymology for the brothel district that was established and maintained in Edo (Tokyo) 3 or 400 years ago by governmental mandate: 'The quarter was named "Yoshiwara" (yoshi, reed; wara, field. It doesn't give the kanji characters.) as it occupied a vast riverfront area overrun with reeds. In 1626, the character for "reed" was replaced by a much more auspicious character meaning "good fortune", also pronounced "yoshi"'. There was a little flurry or short din as I got here. They've been tormenting me with some of their more cruel motifs but I don't want to take the time. I haven't been able to make anything yet of the reeds although the Hebrew name of the Red Sea is the Sea of Reeds and it was in the hollow stalk of a reed that Prometheus hid the fire he had stolen. I think I copied a picture of Egyptian craftsmen blowing on a fire through hollow tubes and how workers in Mexico use a hollow tube to suck up the Agave juice from which pulque is made. I think also, I took discussed my thought that red coral was seen as a petrified vein of life force. I just copied this into the draft file without any interference. This doesn't have an automatic save but in most ways it is better than the draft file on my e-mail. Another thing I noticed is that I recognized the character for moon in the artist's text. I picked it out after I realized that this is a section containing pictures with "moon" in the title or caption or whatever. It's in cursive or calligraphic style and various a little from pic to pic, but it is easy to read. That the graph for "friend" is two moon characters side by side could be relevant. I've been trying to find a place to fit in the scripture at Isaiah 14-12, How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
I was struck by the beauty of this one and its artistic merit but had to look at it a time or 2 before I remembered the passage from [[[]]] the book I quoted yesterday under the Gabriel/Dionysus of Zurbaran. This passage is in the author's commentary on on several verses in the first chapter of the Bhagavad Gita in which several of the leaders b
Pathetic Club Lounge food servings.
Yes, two trays of food, one a selection of mini sandwiches, the other small bitesize tibits. That's all! Wow..that's really pathetic. I can't think of a more appropriate or accurate word to describe it. And worse, they recycled this for lunch, afternoon tea and evening cocktail! Terrible. This makes it the worst club-lounge food presentation I have ever countered in all my hotel stays. What the heck is the hotel thinking?
Compare this to the buffet style servings at both the Ritz Carlton Kuningan and Ritz Carlton Pacific Place in Jakarta. Makes the Kempinski appears stingy and embarassing. Management is cutting cost like there's no tomorrow.
Unless they improve, forget about booking a club room at this hotel, totally NOT WORTH IT!

Star Inn - George Inn / High Street / Ardersier SCO
A Polaroid camera bought in Oxfam, Inverness for 3?.
A funny toy for my last days in Ardersier.
Back from Inverness after a bloody good gig (Peatbog Faeries@Ironworks), Nathan took the camera and began a photo-documentary about the Star Inn regulars (now called the George Inn which sounds a bit too much english, don't think so?).
Some good characters : Dougie, the college teacher and almost professionnal Queen of the South supporter, Jim, his quiz mate and Livingston supporter, Heather and Robbie behind the bar, Ken, the best quiz master ever, we miss you, and so much to tell about these guys, go and have a look, open from monday to sunday. Ardersier, High Street.
High Street, Ardersier.
Star Inn: Pucklechurch
The Star Inn was my Father's local for much of the later years of his life. In August 2005 it was the scene of a tragedy when popular landlord Bob Todd was run down and killed by a group of youngsters who had earlier been causing trouble in the village. My Father was a good friend of Mr Todd who was known for his good work for charity and the local community and it was thought at first, probably incorrectly, that maybe his tragic death contributed to my Father's own decine in health.

Lodge Motel
The back reads:
THE LODGE MOTEL
630 East Broadway
Missoula, Montana 59801
A new motel of thirty luxurious units ideally situated at the entrance to Scenic Hellgate Canyon, only six blocks from the city center and the University of Montana.
• Restaurant • Swimming Pool
• Hot Water Heat • Direct Dial Phones
• Color TV • Family Units
• Soundproofed • Fishing
- Tel. 549-2387
I like how in the list of amenities, "fishing" just comes out of left field. It's now the "Creekside Inn", and been remodelled. It doesn't look bad now, but I like the old look better. Of course, the neato sign is long gone, probably rusting in a landfill outside of Missoula.
Banning Motel and Trailer Park
Vintage postcard showing the Banning Motel and Trailer Park in Banning, California.
"25 modern motel units and 31 trailer spaces. All units have tile bath-tubs or showers. Kitchenettes - garages - quiet - centrally located"
"A park of relaxation in a beautiful city"
Looking at Google Earth it appears to still be there serving as apartments. The great sign is gone though.

Dorothy Anderson Cabin
Featured in the book "Lady on the Beach" by late author Nora Berg, this small two-room cabin was built by Dorothy Anderson, one of the first residents of Ocean City. It was donated by Chuck and Michael Ann Gigstead, owners of the North Beach Motel, for public display. Dorothy passed away in 1976 at the age of 85, but in 1923 she built this and eight other cabins for the tourist trade. She cleared her land of brush and stumps with only the aid of a part-time handyman, and built the cabins with wood found on the beach. A Norwegian immigrant, she filled the house with antiques from the old country and trimmed the woodwork with her yak knife to remind her of home. It served at one time as the post office.
