To say thank you for mine (and for being such a great flickr-friend) I wanted to do the same x Okay - Also, I've been tagged by the lovely ladies Linda and Tracie for some questions lately so here goes :) 1. If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Probably Stephen Fry - he is a bit of a national treasure in the UK. 2. What did you wanna be when you grew up? I wanted to be a teacher. My mum trained as one when I was starting high school and I did a few work placements with her. I really enjoyed it and got into Uni, but never went. In the end having my own place and money seemed more important. I guess by 18 I wasn't as keen on the idea as I thought I would be. I do regret not getting a degree sometimes but unless you feel passionately about something, I'm not sure all that debt is worth it. 3. What's your biggest asset? My bum? Haha, only kidding. Probably the same as my worst asset - my need to organise everything. It's something that I have had to let slide these past few years (as for some reason, the twins just won't stay tidy!). 4. What's your favorite late night snack? I'm partial to a bowl of Cocoa Pops in the evening if I am peckish. Has to be soya milk though. 5. If money were no object, what would you like to do? If money were no object, I could stop worrying about everything all the time - so perhaps I would be happy. I would love to buy out my house and help my family too. See the world, with my camera :) 6. Name one talent you wish you had. There are lots of things I wish I was better at but, as daft as this sounds, I would love to be able to whistle a tune :) 7. If you knew then, what you know now. My life would be completely different - I have way too many regrets. That said, they make me who I am now so perhaps I wouldn't change much after all. I guess I would be healthier 8. Would you rather take a dip in a lake or the ocean? The sea for sure, lakes around here are not nice! 9. what are your 2 favorite movies? Pride & Predjudice (2005 version) and The Shawshank Redemption. 10. List 3 things you'd like to achieve in 2011. (1) Improve my photography. (2) Stop beating myself up over everything I do wrong. Learn to appreciate what I have more and not focus on the negative so much. (3) Stop making excuses for being fat and just loose the bloomin' weight. Social Representations of Homosexuality poster I was asked to design a poster for someone's degree subject work / dissertation. The topic: Social representations of homosexuality - Researching and finding solutions on the way homosexuals and heterosexuals face each other and react-like, also how they feel like in society. They asked this project to be followed by a poster idea (100x100cm) representing the topic. I don't know how the psychology students dealt with that..guess that's why us grafikers are here innit? So I was set free to create... I came up with this idea of a gay man who's not 'out' in society parts like his daily job, for the usual popular reasons. He is playing the double role cliche 'different person in the morning, different one at night'. I hope the image is saying it all. Reaching the background color part, which is quite a basic in my opinion, I happened to be also browsing the 'Color of the year' article, while my friend had a messenger avatar with pretty much the same color as in the article... You get the picture. Not to mention I love turquoise. But only this time I changed it giving the washed-out feeling by burning the image a bit. Green-ish. By the way, since I crossed the subject, I don't know what the hell 'Color of the Year 2010' is supposed to mean, but I like it! Pantone 15-5519 TCX sounds just right. What a color eh. Both retro and current, tropical and warm, kinda past but timeless. I also do not know if the right name is turquoise, well it must be cause it fits, but I like it too as it puts me to listen to Circulation's "Turquoise" again, what a track! Melodic tech house in all of its glory. Sweet. How amazing is that Circulation managed to actually turn the color turquoise into a song! Professor Ernest Everett Just, PhD. Biologist, Researcher Ernest Everett Just (August 14, 1883 – October 27, 1941) was a pioneering black U.S. biologist. Just spent his adult life collecting, classifying, and caring for his marine specimens. He believed that scientists should study whole cells under normal conditions, rather than simply breaking them apart in a laboratory setting. Just's primary legacy is his recognition of the fundamental role of the cell surface in the development of organisms. Early life Ernest was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1883 to parents Charles Frazier Just Jr. and Mary Matthews Just. His father and grandfather Charles Sr. were dock builders. When he was four years old, both died. Just’s mother became the sole supporter of him, his younger brother and his younger sister. Mary Matthews Just taught at an African-American school in Charleston to support her family. During the summer, she worked in the phosphate mines on James Island. Noticing that there was much vacant land near the island, Mary persuaded several black families to move there to farm. The town they founded, now incorporated in the West Ashley area of Charleston, was eventually named Maryville in her honor. Hoping Just would become a teacher, his mother sent him to an all-black boarding school in Orangeburg, South Carolina at the age of thirteen. Because the schools for blacks in the south were inferior, Just and his mother thought it better for him to go north. At age sixteen, Just enrolled at a Meriden, New Hampshire college-preparatory high school, Kimball Union Academy. Despite being the only black student at Kimball, Just completed the four-year program in only three years and graduated in 1903 with the highest grades in his class. His mother had died during his second year at Kimball. He was only seventeen. Afte graduating Kimball Union Academy, Just went on to attend Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1907, the only student to graduate magna cum laude.] Ernest won special honors in botany, history, and sociology and was designated as a Rufus Choate scholar for two years. Founding of Omega Psi Phi On November 17, 1911, Just assisted three Howard students (Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper, and Frank Coleman), in establishing the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The name Omega Psi Phi was derived from a Greek phrase meaning "friendship is essential to the soul", and became the fraternity's motto. Manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift were adopted as Omega's cardinal principles. Career Upon graduation from Dartmouth, Just faced the same problems as all black college graduates of his time: no matter how brilliant they were or how high were their grades, it was almost impossible for blacks to become faculty members of white colleges or universities. Just then took what seemed to be the best choices available to him and was appointed to a teaching position at historically-black Howard University in Washington, D.C.. In 1910, he was put in charge of the newly-formed biology department by Wilbur P. Thirkield. In 1912, he became head of the Department of Zoology, a position he held until his death in 1941. Just was soon introduced to Dr. Frank R. Lillie, head of the biology department at the University of Chicago. Lillie, who was also chief of the Marine Biology Lab at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, invited Just to spend the summer of 1909 as his research assistant at Woods Hole. For the next twenty years, Just spent every summer but one at Woods Hole. On 12 June 1912 Ernest married Ethel Highwarden, who taught German at Howard University. They had three children: Margaret, Highwarden, and Maribel. In 1915, Just took a leave of absence from Howard to enroll in an advanced academic program at the University of Chicago. That same year, Just, who was gaining a national reputation as an outstanding young scientist, was the first recipient of the NAACP's Spingarn Medal on 12 February 1915. In June 1916, Just received his Ph.D. in experimental embryology, with a thesis on the mechanics of fertilization, from the University of Chicago, becoming one of the handful blacks who had gained this degree from a major university. During the next several years, Just became an internationally respected biologist. At Woods Hole, he conducted thousands of experiments studying the fertilization of the marine mammal cell. His work on small water creatures was highly respected by biologists in Europe. In 1922, Just successfully refuted Jacque Loeb’s theory of artificial parthenogenesis. His first book, Basic Methods for Experiments on Eggs of Marine Mammals, was based on his Woods Hole research. Just eventually published more than 50 scientific papers over 20 years based on his research at Woods Hole. Just, however, became increasingly frustrated because he could not attain an appointment to a major American university. He wanted a position that would provide a steady income and allow him to spend more time with his beloved r Maria Frostic - Main Iceberg Lagoon What do puffins -- colorful-billed birds looking like miniature penguins -- have to do with the work we do at NASA? That would be a good question to ask Maria Frostic, an earth science film producer at Goddard. Better yet, catch her documentary, “Plight of the Puffins,” on PBS next week to get the scoop. On a Fulbright scholarship, Maria took leave from Goddard for July and August 2007 and traveled to the Westman Islands of Iceland to make a documentary on the shrinking population of puffins. Originally, she had planned to produce a film on medieval Icelandic sagas, but her plans changed after hearing the story of the islands’ native bird. Maria explained, “Upon my arrival in Iceland, I was introduced to a puffin biologist who had just launched a study to understand why Iceland's Atlantic puffin population, which is the largest in the world, is threatened. I learned that the birds' food source has shifted due to climate change, and I thought this would make an interesting film.” While Maryland and Iceland may be geographically, geologically, and culturally different, Maria felt interconnections between her work in both places. As an Earth Science producer at NASA, all of her projects have involved climate change in some way. For instance, Maria recently produced new science data visualizations from the Sea-viewing Wide Field of view Sensor (SeaWiFS), a unique instrument that observes global levels of phytoplankton. SeaWiFS gathers data on ocean color from space, which enables researchers to understand the oceans' role in the global carbon cycle, as well as other biogeochemical cycles, through a comprehensive research program. One of the mission’s findings has been evidence that increased sea surface temperatures result in lower amounts of marine phytoplankton. Most marine life depends on phytoplankton, including the fish that sustain Iceland’s Atlantic puffin population. In the past year, researchers linked the disappearnce of the birds’ missing food source to Earth’s changing climate. Some baby puffins, known as pufflings, are dying of starvation -- their food source, a fish called the sandeel, is now scarce where it used to be abundant. The people of the Westman Islands have strong ties to puffins as a part of their culture and express concern about the fate of the birds. Once an important food source for survival, the puffin is now a revered mascot, and images of the birds grace signs, buildings, and busses throughout the town of Heimaey. In late summer, baby puffins must make their first flight to sea. The baby birds are often drawn to the town’s lights, and wind up stranded and disoriented. The children of Heimaey have an annual tradition of catching the vulnerable pufflings and releasing them at the water’s edge. Island adults recall rescuing the birds in droves; in the last three years, puffin reproduction has plummeted, and far fewer birds are venturing out toward sea. Fascinated by the people and their connection to the puffin, Maria did as the Icelandic people do. She pulled herself up the precarious cliff sides using the old ropes hung by the locals. There she filmed the puffin nesting grounds as unobtrusively as possible, valuing truth in her work. “I strive to create films that are entertaining and informative but have scientific integrity,” said Maria. “It’s not always easy to balance each of these elements, but I work closely with the scientists I document to ensure that they are comfortable with how I portray them and their work.” Maria believes that audiences enjoy nature documentaries. The recent unexpected success of the Discovery Channel’s Planet Earth is a big indicator of the kind of programming the general public want to view. “Planet Earth was wildly popular and proved to the large networks that the public cares about the natural world and stories related to the natural sciences. There is also a large green movement happening around the globe, which coincides with a widened platform for making and distributing documentary film,” said Maria. “It is an exciting time to be involved with making science films.” There may not be a more fitting person than Maria to make those films. Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Maria received Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and English Language and Literature from the University of Virginia. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in Science and Natural History Filmmaking from Montana State University in Bozeman. She has worked as a newspaper reporter; teacher; park ranger; and marine science researcher. Finding science filmmaking allowed Maria to combine all of her interests and experience. Having always been drawn to nature and science, she is appreciative of the opportunity to close the gap between science and communicators. When the opportunity to do just that arose at Goddard, she thought there would be no better place to communicate science stories than at NASA. Before yoga on my ride in I kept thinking that todays photo might be lacking, I did not fret just yet because one always seems to turn up when you aren't looking. So I left yoga and as I was arriving at Eisenhower St, I notice a brilliantly large rainbow in front of me. I rode over to garrison bight bridge and start clicking. This photo was taken through my polarized sunglasses with the white balance change to tungsten. The rosy pink shade of the glasses was removed and all that was left was polarization. The technique helped me capture much clearer rainbows. I am also very attracted to this photo is Rorschach for because the curve up the rainbow becomes so clear and mathematical when reflected. "Newton originally named only five primary colours: red, yellow, green, blue and violet. Later he included orange and indigo, giving seven colours by analogy to the number of notes in a musical scale." Ninety Degrees A quarter turn of a circular polarizer is the sole difference between these two images. This simple adjustment darkens the sky, softens the reflection in the water, reduces the luster off the mud, and most strikingly brings to the grass and trees a vibrant luminosity. The university was founded, or ratified, in 1290 by King Dinis, having begun its existence in Lisbon with the name Studium Generale (Estudo Geral). Scientiae thesaurus mirabilis, the royal charter announcing the institution of the University was dated 1 March of that year, although efforts had been made at least since 1288 to create this first University in Portugal; it is thus one the oldest of such establishments in the Iberian Peninsula. The Papal confirmation was also given in 1290 (on 9 August of that year), during the Papacy of the Pope Nicholas IV. In accordance with the Papal Bull, all the "licit" Faculties, with the exception of that of Theology, could be established. Thus the Faculties of Arts, Law, Canon Law and Medicine were the first to be created. It was, however, not to remain in Lisbon for long. In 1308, likely due to problems of emancipation from the Church (relations between the latter and the political power being somewhat strained at the time) and conflicts between the inhabitants of the city and the students, the University moved to Coimbra. This town already had old traditions in education, being home to the highly successful school of the Monastery of Santa Cruz. The university was then established on the site known as "Estudos Velhos", which corresponds roughly to the area where the Main Library now stands.In 1338, during the reign of Afonso IV, it was once again transferred to Lisbon, from whence it returned in 1354, this time to the centre of the town which was then in full expansion. In 1377, during the reign of King Fernando, it was transferred yet again to Lisbon, where it would remain for over a century and a half. The authorization for a Faculty of Theology probably dates from this period – around 1380.In 1537, during the reign of Joăo III, the university moved definitively to Coimbra, where it was installed in the Alcaçova Palace. The entire university institution, including the teaching staff and all the books from its library, were moved from Lisbon to Coimbra. The Alligator of Algonquin Park Despite the sunny +17 degree day, I discovered ice had already blanketed much of this pond along Algonquin Park's Logging Museum Trail. At right is the park's "alligator" which the trail guide describes thus: "Displayed here is the William M., one of the only three reasonably well preserved examples of the "alligator" that survive in the world today. It is hard to imagine the impact this powerful, amphibious tugboat must have had when it was invented back in 1889 by John Ceburn West. For the generations of loggers who had known nothing but the slow, exhausting, horse-powered cadge crib as a way to move logs across remote lakes, Mr West's creation would have been a stunning breakthrough. The new machine was a steampowered tug and winch combined into one versatile unit. For ordinary travel, the 20 horsepower engine drove the paddle wheels on each side and the boat would chug along at five or six miles per hour. To move a log boom, the crew would disengage the engine from the paddle-wheels and use it instead to power a winch holding a mile of five-eights inch steel cable. In essentially the same process as used by the cadge crib, the alligator would winch in the cable and, thereby, pull or "warp" itself and the attached log boom up to a previously established anchorage. The alligator's boiler, fed with three-quarters of a cord of wood, built up enough steam to warp booms of up to 60 000 logs for as long as ten hours. Most impressive of all, however, was the alligator's abilitiy to winch itself over land from one lake to another. The hull was scow-shaped to give out-of-the-water stabiltiy, and two steel-plated runners permitted the alligator to pull itself over logs placed crossways at two metre intervals along the portage. Progess was slow (one and half kilometres a day was tops) but the winch was so powerful that it could pull the alligator up 20-degree inclines." Trans Canada Trail TCT VIDEO Today I cycled 35.7km on the Trans Canada Trail (TCT) from Lake Cowichan (The Foot) to the Kinsol Trestle. Dustin organized the operation and I acted as tour guide. Having made a profound study of the history of this railine over the past two-years and having cycled its entire length -- albeit in manageable sections -- I consider myself an expert on the subject, while managing to maintain a degree of modesty in the process. It was a brilliant idea Dustin came up with to cycle the entire 35km, northern section of the TCT in one go. It was a bit much for me but I made it and Dustin found several geocaches along the trail while waiting for me to catch up. We departed The Foot at 10:30a.m. and arrived four-and-a-half hours later at Kinsol. We both drove our cars and bikes to Riverside Road parking at Kinsol then put our rides on one car and drove to The Foot where we offloaded and hit the trail. We took lunchbreak at the marvelous Marie Canyon Trestle and chowddown on our chicken teriyaki sandwiches from Subway in Lake Cowichan at 11:30. One of the highlights of this cycling experience for me, was seeing the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) preserved the TCt section of the old Canadian National Railway (CNR) from Pine Street Trailhead by constructing a new trailhead beside Hammond Street (off the King George St. round-about). Northward from this point on the original CNR right-of-way (ROW), houses have been built where the tracks once lay. The ROW is not visible again until one climbs the bank on the northwest side of Northshore road beyond the City Limits (actually, Township) heading out-of-town toward Youbou. The section of trail saved between Pine and Hammond streets is only approximately 400m, the CVRD is to be commended for doing so. She was the first Japanese music therapist to graduate from the New York University Music Therapy Program, gaining her Masters degree in 1988. Since 1991, she has divided her work between the Center and an extensive private practice serving the children of Japanese speaking families in New Jersey and Westchester, New York. Her program in New Jersey also functions as a clinical training site for Japanese music therapy students. Kaoru has presented her work internationally in Japan, Lithuania, Russia, and Estonia. Her bilingual capabilities and her familiarity with Japanese culture enable her to serve the Center's continually growing connections with the emerging field of music therapy in Japan. She is the Center's Coordinator of Japanese-American Communications, maintaining active liaison with the Organization for Studying Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Japan (OSNRMT) and also with the Japanese community in the New York City area. In collaboration with Clive Robbins, Alan Turry and Kana Okazaki, she also coordinates a collaborative NRCMT/OSNRMT Clinical Supervision Program for music therapists in Japan. After I finish uploading these pics you know I'm going to celebrate! my vintage cap, which is wrapped with a leather belt and pinned with a kilt pin, was thrifted. the round glasses were thrifted also. my cowrie shell choker was bought years and years ago at the african festival. my jacket and bag were thrifted and my brooch was thrifted and modified by yours truly. my amulet ring was purchased at the israel museum in jerusalem, and my udjat ring was purchased at the field museum here in chicago. my skirt has a great story: i owned this back in 2006, but sold it maybe a year or so later, only to regret selling it later on (hate when that happens!) Back in June I saw it in Buffalo Exchange and simply had to buy it back again. you can barely see it but i have a coin chain going across the bustle; that was thrifted. my knee-high half-socks are from H & M. I caught them on deep discount and bought every pair they had; that's my style! my vintage tasseled wingtips were purchased at maxwell street market last year, I think. Survey thing since I'm bored... I'm bored so I figured I might as well do what everyone else is doing as well 8 random facts about yours truly: 1) I'm half Norwegian (born and raised) and half Italian. Ever since I was around 12 years old I've hated everything that has to do with Italy and my Italian heritage. People think I'm nuts for it since it's apparently awesome to know another language. 2) I've only ever met one person in RL that I met online and to this day we are best friends. We have to talk in English since I'm an idiot and don't understand a word of Danish despite it being ridiculously similar. 3) I work at a kindergarten but I don't want to have kids of my own. Coming home to a silent and kid-free house is something I live for after nine hours at work. 4) I used to study photography and my plan was to major in it as well but I decided against it. This fall however I plan to start over again and hopefully I'll get my major and a bachelors degree within education. 5) I can't draw at all but I always doodle. It says something when two year olds are better at doodling than me. 6) I'm a klutz and I currently have trouble walking thanks to one of my (sober) klutz moments. I have a skinned knee and leg because of wearing high heels and not looking where I was walking. 7) I spend too much time on my Shih Tzu puppy named Chanel. I'm one of those weird people who go to dog shows and hope their dogs win enough certificates to become a national/ international champion. I absolutely love it despite people finding it an odd thing to do. 8) When I was five years old my throat closed up, thus, I stopped breathing. I had to be rushed to the hospital and according to everyone around me it's a miracle I'm alive and kicking. Is it obvious I'm bored? I'm done cluttering Flickr now lmao. Philip Cheney Library Board Appoints New Director (Walhalla, SC) November 29, 2011-The Board of Trustees of the Oconee County Public Library (OCPL) system announces the appointment of Philip Cheney as its new director, replacing retiring director Sue Baldwin. “Philip’s skills and experience are a perfect fit for Oconee,” said W.R. “Biff” Kennedy, chairman of the OCPL board. “And, it’s always a plus when you can promote from within.” As director, Cheney will be responsible for the Oconee County library system, including personnel and financial matters. He will work with the OCPL board to improve information technology systems, increase material acquisition and communicate library vision and services to Oconee citizens. He will begin his duties in January. Cheney, an OCPL employee since 2007, most recently supervised the three branch libraries as well as the bookmobile. Prior to his Oconee experience, he was on the City Council of Anderson and served as head of Public Services of the Anderson County Library. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Saint Andrews Presbyterian College and a Masters of Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Oconee system includes library branches in Salem, Seneca, Walhalla, and Westminster and the bookmobile that serves the more rural areas of the county. I told my family and everyone else, who might care, of my intentions. When the circus came to San Francisco I went to ask for a job, but didn't meet the right people, so I hitched a ride to Fresno to talk to the guy hiring vendors. Selling cotton candy is the entry level position for a job with the circus. The pay off was that you got to bunk on the train dormitory style, but not if you were a girl I found out, at least not right then. The women were bunked two to a car and only performers got that much room. And to be a performer you had to audition at the winter headquarters. After a year of calling long distance trying to get a concession job with a bunk I gave it up. Considering my disillusionment with a liberal arts education, the circus was an apt alternative. It was my dream to be the dancer sitting on top of the elephants head. Most performers actually do not live on the train. They drive live-in vans and also stayed in hotels, but vendors weren't paid enough to make that financially feasible. The Ringling Brothers had two trains. The red train did the southern route and the blue train did the northern route. Then they switched. They have the largest privately owned trains in the US. Ironically I've never actually seen a performance of the Ringling Brothers Circus and don't reckon I will. I'm much more the Cirque de Soleil type. And yes I loved Water For Elephants. I also went to Thailand that summer and my relatives were horrified by my plan to join the circus. They told me it would besmirch the family name, but that didn't discourage me. My father suggested I stay in Thailand, but my grandmother was such a tyrant I said no way. Had she not been I might have spent a few years in Bangkok quite possibly working for an English language newspaper. My parents were getting a divorce that year so didn't have much leverage in my decision and I no longer had to ask my father to pay for college so I didn't have to be beholden to anything he had to say in the matter. (I later got myself a job working nights as a movie projectionist.) My transfer to U.C Berkeley (from U.C. Santa Cruz) was accepted and my family was very proud, but that still wasn't enough of a draw to justify the expense. So I came home, enrolled in the local community college and knocked around trying to find myself on my own terms until I finally found a degree I could stomach and transferred to San Jose State. My only requirement was that it not require either reading or writing. The irony of this continues to amuse me. (Math was definately out of the question also.) And that's how I came to complete a BS degree in graphic design, a process that took me 8 years all told. And it did get me a job as a paste-up artist and typesetter for 10 years. A year into the job, I decided I wanted to write my book and that's what I did to offset the boredom of it all and imbue myself with yet another dream. (I also met five people there who still figure in my life; five creative people also spinning their wheels looking for their dream—three in photography; the rest of us in the public relations department. Plus I met Catherine through a mutual friend there. So was a crucial juncture, this job.) It really is the dreaming that sets us apart from the despairing hoipalloi, I've noted, especially in these recession years. There are feasible dreams and there are fantasy dreams. A Different Kind of Flower Tonight I went through some pics from my archives, and found a bunch of shots that I'd taken over two years ago while I was visiting Tigger at Sugar Mill Gardens. For those who don't know the story of my cat, Tigger, he had been owned by an elderly lady who passed away. I was told that her ashes had been scattered in the gardens. (She had lived just down the street.) Tigger's name back then was Jack. I found this out when I met a girl in the gardens who claimed to have been the best friend of the lady's grand daughter, and she filled me in on some interesting facts. "Jack" was passed down to the girl, who was very young at that time. For some reason, he kept getting out and running down to Sugar Mill Gardens to hang out. It seems a little like a Greyfriar's Bobby kind of thing, (you know, where the dog's owner died and he laid on his owner's grave every day until HE died, too!) The family would come and get Jack, but he apparently liked hunting squirrels in the gardens, and being a very social cat, liked all the attention from visitors, and quickly became the unofficial greeter of the place! Eventually, the family had to move to St. Augustine, and for whatever reason, they decided to leave Jack to his gardens, and asked the garden staff if they'd look after him. At some point, Jack was renamed Tigger, and several of the volunteers fed him, and one would do things like periodically worm him, or pull ticks off him. After I came on Flickr, I met Tiger Lair, another member, who has a group called Tigger, the Gatekeeper's Garden Clubhouse. That's where I found out about Tig. I had heard so much about him that I planned to visit him, but like most people, never had the time. Well, Tiger Lair (Susan) would check on him every month or so, and bring him snacks and catnip. On January 1, 2008, she had gone out of town with her hubby, and the temps were going to plummet into the 20's, which is unusual for Florida. I wondered if Tigger had ever been exposed to such weather, or if he had someplace warm to go in. So, I made my first visit to the Gardens to bring him a blanket, just in case. When I got to the gardens, it was late afternoon, and it was already about 40 degrees. I found Tigger on top of the old ruins, shivering. The plants had been covered, but there was no bed or house, and nothing warm for the cat to cuddle up with. So, I tossed the blanket up onto the ruins next to him, while he looked at me like I was nuts! I walked away to take some photos, and when I returned, there was Tigger, cuddled up on the blanket! I brought treats and lured him over with them so I could pet him. Well, the rest is history. After that, I went back again and again, each time bringing more stuff...a "house" made out of a storage container with a hole cut in the side that I put blankets in for him to get out of the rain or wind. I ended up going there most every day and bringing him food and giving him fresh water. In the process, I discovered just how hard life had been for Tigger, who was about 8-10 years old. I would put fresh water in his bowl and give him fresh food, then walk around the gardens taking photos while he escorted me! When I went back over by his bowls, I'd often find his food half gone and his water bowl filthy with mud! It took me a while to discover the culprit who was making a mess of things and stealing his food. It was raccoons! Tigger could gallop like a race horse, and I have no doubt that it was due to running from angry mother raccoons, protecting their young, and eating his food! Tigger had hind leg problems, and I began to notice he would shake sometimes, and have difficulty making it over the fence, or climbing up on anything. His legs are longer than any cat I've ever seen, but not particularly strong. I believe he couldn't climb to get away from danger; he just had to run for it! Over time, I grew to love him like one of my own cats, and right before a tropical storm hit the following summer, I took Tigger home to keep him safe. He adapted so well that I ended up keeping him! A couple of months later, my mother took ill and passed away. I lost my job of 16 years, and had no money for food for myself, let alone 3 cats! Susan began to bring me food and supplies, not just for Tigger, but for ALL my cats! She has treated them as if they were her own for over a year and a half! Even now, I only have been able to find a part time job which pays much less than what I used to earn, and she has continued to help me so my three boys can stay healthy. I don't know what I'd do without her! It's been a long time since I went to the gardens. We had my mother's memorial service there, and that was the last time I went. I have taken literally thousands of photos of the 12 acre site, which was once part of the Dunlawton Plantation. Many of the photos I've never had time to process. So, like everything else, they will be done eventually, as I make room for new things!
