iMac 7300GT thermal failure This is our office 6,1 Acrylic 24" iMac graphics card... The machine began to behave in an odd fashion, pixels would randomly flash white and black like twinkling stars, then windows would artifact and remain in their original place when moved as well as moving to their new location, leaving behind multiple versions of the window in transit. Then lines would appear... Yes, classic symptoms of an overheating GPU. Hmmm... Tear down revealed the culprit. The GPU core silicone had hot spots. You can see the 'shiny' areas that did not have any thermal paste applied to them as well as the corresponding area on the copper heat sink block. This means there was very little heat transfer from these areas on the silicone to the heat sink. Cleaned and applied correctly arctic silver and the machine is back in service and no problems. NOTE: This is not a series of instructions. It is a reflection and observation of how I solved my own issues as I am a qualified technician. If your machine is experiencing similar problems, take it to your nearest repair center. This solution should set you back no more than the cost of consumables (thermal paste) and 1 hour of labour including the tear down and reassembly. If the GPU is badly damaged from too much heat over an extended period of time then a replacement card may be required. Mother and Son with Thermal Imaging An unusual portrait of mother and son, ha ha! See the previous photo for a self-portrait. If you've known me online for a while you'd KNOW I just had to try for these shots. Drewski is very very happy with this photo and wants me to send it out to all his family and friends. This is not Photoshopped but is a photo I took of the projected image in thermal rendering. Part of an exhibit about photography and digital imaging, this exhibit has the viewer stand at a certain place on the floor and the thermal image captured is projected on a giant screen about 15 feet away. I imagine that the computer program connected to this exhibit allows the programmer to use the cursor in demonstrations. Very fun!
