Best Cheap Mandolin

- A mandolin (mandolino) is a musical instrument in the lute family (plucked, or strummed). It descends from the mandore, a soprano member of the lute family.

- bum: of very poor quality; flimsy
- relatively low in price or charging low prices; "it would have been cheap at twice the price"; "inexpensive family restaurants"
- Charging low prices

potato, gruyere and arugula gratin
this is the old standard gratin recipe i keep up my sleeve. i have perfected it over the years but the original idea came from that live cooking show Sara Moulton did years ago on Food Network.
i slice my potatoes [skin on] on the thinnest setting available on my cheap plastic mandolin wanna-be. then begin layering them in a buttered dish along with gruyere [or cheese of choice], salt, pepper and arugula [or veggie of choice, if you use a more substantial veg [i.e. asparagus] blanch it first. i've tried many over the years and found for ease of preparation something spinach-esque works best]. once you've made 3 layers of potatoes and 2 of veggie and cheese then pour a cream mixture over top. i use 2 cups of cream [or any combination of cream, milk, 1/2 & 1/2 you have around] that i've steeped with smashed garlic [to taste], nutmeg and red pepper flakes. then i generously top the dish with more gruyere. bake at 375 until golden brown and bubbly.
most times this serves as a complete meal, especially if you pile in the spinach.
50/365 - Rogue Mandolin
It's Instrument Wednesday! I don't remember which came first, the Korg Karma or this, but I went for the mandolin because I have plans for the Karma next week but didn't have time to execute today.
Anyway, this is a crappy-cheap "Rogue" mandolin I got from Musician's Friend for $35. I was very disappointed when it showed up because I really thought I was getting a "Roguish Manda Lynn." But for $35, I should have known it was too good to be true.
Anyway, it was an experiment to see if I'd play it at all. I do only RARELY, so it'll be a while before I justify buying a good one. Maybe Em will pick it up.
