Thermal Expansion Valve Installation
- Thermal expansion is the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature. All materials have this tendency.

Thermal expansion joint
A scale underneath the railway bridge, probably showing how many centimeters the bridge has expanded or shrunk because of the heat / cold. At this moment, the scale stands at +9 cm. The scale and the expansion joint it is a part of seems to be manufactured by Mageba in Switzerland.
The bridge is part of the new "Lahden oikorata" high speed railway between Helsinki and Lahti in Finland. When this photo was taken, traffic had not yet begun on the track.
