Silver King Hotel in Bisbee, Arizona

I thought I found a good deal at fifty dollars a night in this old hotel in Bisbee. However, when we arrived just as it was getting dark, some guys were hauling a mattress into or out of the building, and when we asked them where we should check in, they seemed to not have any idea and they said something about nobody ever being there. The neighborhood was somewhat dumpy.

We quickly found another place to stay that night in Naco, very close to the border. We went back to take a picture the following day.

The owners of the Silver King returned my check to me in the mail.

Berlin

Berlin

The camp was established in 1936. It was located north of Berlin, which gave it a primary position among the German concentration camps: the administrative centre of all concentration camps was located in Oranienburg, and Sachsenhausen became a training centre for Schutzstaffel (SS) officers (who would often be sent to oversee other camps afterwards). Executions took place at Sachsenhausen, especially those that were Soviet Prisoners of War. Some Jews were executed at Sachsenhausen and many died there, the Jewish inmates of the camp were relocated to Auschwitz in 1942. Sachsenhausen was not intended as an extermination camp — instead, the systematic mass murder of Jews was conducted in camps to the east. However, many died as a result of executions, casual brutality and the poor living conditions and treatment.

Sachsenhausen was intended to set a standard for other concentration camps, both in its design and the treatment of prisoners. The camp perimeter is, approximately, an equilateral triangle with a semi circular roll call area centred on the main entrance gate in the side running northeast to southwest. Barrack huts lay beyond the roll call area, radiating from the gate. The layout was intended to allow the machine gun post in the entrance gate to dominate the camp but in practice it was necessary to add additional watchtowers to the perimeter.

The standard barrack layout was two accommodation areas linked by common storage, washing and storage areas. Heating was minimal. Each day, time to get up, wash, use the toilet and eat was very limited in the crowded facilities.

There was an infirmary inside the southern angle of the perimeter and a camp prison within the eastern angle. There was also a camp kitchen and a camp laundry. The camp's capacity became inadequate and the camp was extended in 1938 by a new rectangular area (the "small camp") north east of the entrance gate and the perimeter wall was altered to enclose it. There was an additional area (sonder lager) outside the main camp perimeter to the north; this was built in 1941 for special prisoners that the regime wished to isolate.

An industrial area, outside the western camp perimeter, contained SS workshops in which prisoners were forced to work; those unable to work had to stand to attention for the duration of the working day. Heinkel, the aircraft manufacturer, was a major user of Sachsenhausen labour, using between 6000 and 8000 prisoners on their He 177 bomber. Although official German reports claimed "The prisoners are working without fault", some of these aircraft crashed unexpectedly around Stalingrad and it's suspected that prisoners had sabotaged them. [1] Other firms included AEG.

Plaque to honour over 100 Dutch resistance fighters executed at Sachsenhausen.Later, part of the industrial area was used for "Station Z", where executions took place and a new crematorium was built, when the first camp crematorium could no longer cope with the number of corpses. The executions were done in a trench, either by shooting or by hanging. Amongst those executed were the commandos from Operation Musketoon and the Grand Prix motor racing champion, William Grover-Williams, also John Godwin RNVR, a British Naval Sub-Lieutenant who managed to shoot dead the commander of his execution party, for which he was mentioned in despatches posthumously. Over 100 Dutch resistance fighters were executed at Sachsenhausen.

The camp was secure and there were few successful escapes. The perimeter consisted of a three metre high wall on the outside. Within that there was a path used by guards and dogs; it was bordered on the inside by a lethal electric fence; inside that was a "death strip" forbidden to the prisoners. Any prisoner venturing onto the "death strip" would be shot by the guards without warning.

Arbeit Macht Frei gateOn the front entrance gates to Sachsenhausen is the infamous slogan Arbeit Macht Frei (German: "Work Makes [You] Free"). About 200,000 people passed through Sachsenhausen between 1936 and 1945. Some 100,000 inmates died there from exhaustion, disease, malnutrition or pneumonia from the freezing winter cold. Many were executed or died as the result of brutal medical experimentation. According to an article published on December 13, 2001 in The New York Times, "In the early years of the war the SS practiced methods of mass killing there that were later used in the Nazi death camps. Of the roughly 30,000 wartime victims at Sachsenhausen, most were Russian prisoners of war, among them Joseph Stalin's eldest son (Yakov Dzhugashvili).[2]

The wife and children of Rupprecht, Crown Prince of Bavaria, members of the Wittelsbach family, were held in the camp from October 1944 to April 1945, before being transferred to the Dachau concentration camp. Reverend Martin Niemoller, a critic of the Nazis and author of the poem First they came..., was also a prisoner at the camp. Hersc

Chowpatty Beach

Chowpatty Beach

Seen from Malabar Hill, in the Kamala Nehru Park. Running alongside the beach is Marine Drive.

From Wikipedia -
Marine Drive (Marathi: ???? ??????) is a 3-kilometre-long boulevard in South Mumbai in the city of Mumbai. It is a 'C'-shaped six-lane concrete road along the coast, which is a natural bay. The road links Nariman Point to Babulnath and Malabar Hill. Marine Drive is situated over reclaimed land facing west-south-west. The bay is part of the Arabian Sea.

The Promenade
The official name for this road, though rarely used, is: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road. It was earlier known as Sonapur to local Marathi people. The highlight of Marine drive is the beautiful promenade along the road where many of the citizens take in a breath of fresh air and view the daily sunsets. The promenade is lined with palm trees. At the northern end of Marine Drive is Chowpatty Beach. This is a popular beach famed for its Bhel puri (local fast food). Many restaurants also line this stretch of the road. Further down this road lies Walkeshwar, a wealthy neighbourhood of the city, also home to the Governor of Maharashtra.

Most of the buildings which were built by wealthy Parsis sport an art deco look that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Miami in the United States is the only city in the world that has more art deco buildings along the seafront than Mumbai.

Real estate prices along the esplanade are among the highest in India, and fourth in the world at US$2100 per square feet. A lot of celebrities live here, making it one of India's premier residential community. Many hotels dot the drive, most prominent among them being the 5-star Oberoi (formerly the Oberoi Hilton Tower however reverted to the original name as of early 2008), The Intercontinental, Hotel Marine Plaza and a few other smaller hotels. Marine Drive is the preferred connecting road between the central business district located at Nariman Point and the rest of the city.

Marine Drive is also known as the Queen's Necklace because if viewed at night from an elevated point anywhere along the drive, the street lights resemble a string of pearls, forming a necklace. It is also the world's largest viewing gallery and hence has been a host to a number of events that take place along the promenade.

Marine Drive has hosted the following major events in recent times.

IAF airshow, October 17, 2004.
Mumbai Marathon 9 February 2004 - an international marathon.
International Fleet Review 19 February 2001 - The world's major navies took part in the IFR.

Hi, I'm on my soapbox again... Please bear with me...

So, I have a friend of mine with whom I've had many conversations about the virtues of a circular polarizer. "Oh, it's on my list," he says. "I have a couple of lenses I want first and want to wait for the new 5D Mark II also before getting one." This was a few months ago. In the meantime, he continues taking exterior photos without one. Well, I submit to you exhibit A (with polarizer) and exhibit B below (without).

Any questions?

So, as I was preparing for this shoot I knew I had to make my lens as fast as possible. I mean, flying in a light aircraft, particularly at low altitudes, is extremely bumpy. So, I made my check list: Higher ISO at 800--check! Wider aperture at f/2.8--check! Lens image stabilization set to on--check! Exposure bias set to below standard at -2/3--check! ...and finally, do not use a polarizer because it slows the lens down--BUZZZZZ! (game show, wrong answer, buzzer sound).

There are some things a computer cannot emulate no matter the software. One is to fix an unfocused image; another one is to apply the effects of a circular polarizer. I mean, look at the water below. If the detail ain't there, it ain't there. No imaging software can fix that. Same with any surface that reflects glare back at you. I even use a polarizer indoors when daylight lights the room as it cuts down glare on walls, floors and furniture... and in some cases, even without daylighting as it also cuts down the glare from incandescent lights.

So, if you've ever been convinced that you'd benefit from a polarizer, but have been putting it off, hopefully, this'll move your butt! It'll be the best $50-$150 you've spent for your camera, I guarantee! I would also say that probably 99 of every 100 images I capture is shot with a polarizer.

A little story as to why the image below didn't use it. if you have the polarizer rotated 90° from optimum rotation, it is almost as if it is not on at all. Because the polarizer was set for shooting in portrait (vertical) the polarizer required another 90° rotation when I turned it back to landscape (horizontal). Obviously I forgot to do it on the first shot, but did after that. Boy, what a difference!

Dear Ma: we are leaving here tomorrow and no letter as yet so we sent the telegram as we are anxious to know how our boy is. It seems ages since we left and he was a bit upset then and naturally I'd like to hear as we've never been away from him before and won't again either, if I can possibly help it.

Please write and tell me about him and I am sending some airmail stamps as I think we will have more luck getting the letters that way.

We are going to Minneapolis tomorrow and start early Sunday for Chicago. We plan to be in Boston the 11th or 12th and stay until the 15th and then to New York until the 18th.

Edison is seeing the powers that be here and they said there was nothing against him in his record but there were 40 for each job and they thought he had a better place where he was than the others, so advised him to stay there. However he is going to get another chance for next July.

Much love to all, especially my boy.

Frances

In October 1938 Mom and Dad drove across the country, from CA to NYC. Dad was checking out places for graduate study. Dad took pictures of lots of old buildings, but never got the negatives printed. Just figured out one of them! Grandma French saved all their letters, and last summer I digitized them with Dragon NaturallySpeaking software.

The (Rail) Road to Riches! Cities all over the world are masses of idling, polluting, honking cars. We need mass transit -- but local, state and national governments haven't been able to make it work. If you can create and operate a successful privately held mass transit operation, you'll do the world a service and reap huge financial rewards -- but that's only the beginning...First, manage your railroad -- transport passengers and freight, extend your lines, and develop te most efficient and profitable routes and schedules. Then, borrow from the bank, buy and develop land, expand your holdings into hotels, factories, resorts and department stores, play the stock market, and build a financial empire.

Pershing Square Viaduct (Park Avenue Viaduct)

Pershing Square Viaduct (Park Avenue Viaduct)

Midtown Manhattan

Pershing Square Viaduct (Park Avenue Viaduct), Midtown Manhattan

Located at Park Avenue and 42nd Street, the Pershing Square Viaduct was constructed in 1917-1919. The viaduct extends from 40th Street to Grand Central Terminal at 42nd Street, linking upper and lower Park Avenue by way of elevated drives that make a circuit around the terminal building and descend to ground level at 4Sth Street.

Designed in 1912 by the architectural firm of Warren & Wetmore, the viaduct was conceived as part of the original 1903 plan for the station by the firm of Reed & Stem. It is an integral part of a complex circulation system that was planned for the ultimate convenience of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The terminal, the viaduct, and many of the surrounding buildings in the Grand Central zone comprise a carefully related scheme that is the finest example of Beaux-Arts civic planning in New York.

History of the Project

The completion of the Grand Central Terminal project in 1919 marked the culmination of 19th-century railroad development in New York City. The city's first rail line, the New York & Harlem Railroad Company, was incorporated in 1831, operating horse-drawn cars after the company's single locomotive had exploded. The first stretch of railway, which Extended from Prince Street to 14th Street along Fourth Avenue, was opened in 1832.

A cut through the rocky terrain of Murray Hill was soon completed, and by 1837 a steam locomotive serviced the line between 14th and 125th Streets. The Murray Hill cut was later taken over by the Metropolitan Street Railway for use by its trolleys, and was covered over and converted to a tunnel, known as the Belmont Tunnel. Today that tunnel, traveled by automobiles, connects with the Park Avenue Viaduct at 40th Street.

Railroad service rapidly expanded in New York. The New York afid New Haven Railroad opened in 1849, and by 1851 a third line, the Hudson River Railroad, ran trains to Albany. A fourth line, the New York Central Railroad, was established in 1853.

Mounting controversy accompanied the increased number of steam locomotives. The trains, which shared the street with other vehicles and pedestrians, were so dirty, noisy, and dangerous, that their use was banned south of 42nd Street by 1858.

By the early 1860s it was evident that complete restructuring of the city's railroad system was essential. The key figure in that process was Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877), who bought control of the New York & Harlem, the Hudson River, and New York Central Railroads between 1863 and 1867. Vanderbilt consolidated the three as the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad and planned a new terminal located between 42nd and 48th Streets and Madison and Lexington Avenues. The station called the Grand Central Depot, was designed by the architect John B. Snook and built in 1869-71.

At that time a new street, Vanderbilt Avenue, was constructed between 42nd and 48th Streets on the west side of the terminal. An enormous train shed and rail yard were located to the north of the station, with tracks running north at street level from 56th Street to 68th Street. From there the tracks passed through, an open cut as far as 96th Street, where they continued over an elevated masonry viaduct.

The tracks ran along Fourth Avenue where noise, steam, and flying sparks made conditions horrendous. A Fourth Avenue Improvement Scheme was established in 1872, resulting in the erection of pedestrian and vehicular bridges over the tracks, and the construction of a partially enclosed tunnel between 56th and 96th Streets. At that time, most of the squatters who occupied the area were forced out by building operations.

By 1898, the Depot no longer served the needs of the burgeoning railroad, and alterations were made in 1898 and 1900. However, the original problems — congestion, the interruption of cross-streets by the tracks, and poor ventilation — persisted. In 1902,a tragic train collision occurred in the Park Avenue tunnel, resulting in the death of seventeen people. The subsequent public outcry called for the immediate improvement of the rail system by electrification and submersion of the tracks. Plans for such modifications were initiated by the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad's chief engineer, Col. William J. Wilgus (1865-1914), and by Frank J. Sprague (1857-1934), a pioneer in the development of electric trains, then a new frontier of engineering. The country's first electric railway had appeared in Richmond, Virginia, and was installed by Sprague in 1887.

Both men worked on several plans for the remodeling of the existing depot, and a final scheme was accepted by William Newman, the President of the railroad, in 1903. The plan, which called for submerged, electrified tracks, a new terminal, and the use of air rights to develop adjacent real estate, was largely the work of Wilgus. Although he had little formal education, Wi

I wish I had framed this shot a bit better so I didn't lose the far edges of the cabin but alas I shot what I shot. I took this picture at Jacob Lake Inn up by the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, which quite a nice place. Gladly it was late in the season so the cabins weren't cold, but really why wouldn't you want to stay at a cabin if you're about to go hiking down into a canyon anyway. I certainly think it fits the mood much better myself!

Blessed Pedro Calungsod Chapel - Cebu City, Philippines

Blessed Pedro Calungsod Chapel - Cebu City, Philippines

a Filipino Roman Catholic martyr who was killed while doing missionary work in Guam in 1672. He was beatified on March 5, 2000, by Pope John Paul II. As a skilled sacristan, he was a companion of Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores to the Marianas Islands.

Through their efforts, many receive the sacraments especially that of baptism. A plot to kill Pedro and San Vitores started when a certain Choco, a Chinese who gained influence over the Macanas of Marianas Island, circulated false accusations that the missionaries were spreading poison through the ritual of the pouring of water (i.e. baptism), and through the ritual of Catholic Masses.

Calungsod has become a candidate for canonization, which would make him the second Filipino saint after San Lorenzo Ruiz if approved by the Pope and the Holy See. In 2011, an official petition approved by the Archdiocese of the Philippines was submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints for another review of Calungsod's charitable works and virtuous deeds.

Queen Elizabeth II - Before the Age of High Security

Queen Elizabeth II - Before the Age of High Security

The Queen visited Victoria, BC in March 1983. Of course we all knew the media and pro photographers would provide lots of great photos but you know how it is…you want one of your own! So there we were along with crowds of enthusiastic people lining the path as the royal party left the Empress Hotel. You can see how close everyone was, and the atmosphere was one of open friendliness.

We stood behind two blue silk ropes, to keep the main walk clear, but other than that people were free to hand flowers directly to the Queen, and she stopped occasionally for a few words here and there.

That wild urge to get one unobstructed picture overtook me, and I found myself outside the rope, on one leg and an elbow (literally) on the pavement, facing the oncoming entourage…listening to a voice (friends later insisted it was mine) saying, “Oooooh, please, pretty please….just ONE picture????” The tall man on the right in the shot was a security agent who seemed to get a kick out of the wild woman on the ground in front of him while the RCMP officer cast a doubtful eye in my direction but everyone proceeded happily on their way, and I got my photo. The Queen looked down at that moment, but even I didn’t dare suggest she POSE for me!

I landed on this one while cleaning up old archived stuff and had to laugh, rememberig how smug I felt with my wee treasure at the end of that day :)

Queen Victoria Reigns

Queen Victoria Reigns

I had the opportunity to stay the night at the Queen Victoria in downtown Victoria. This older property is super convenietly located across the street from the Royal BC Museum and I would definetly recommend it. The room I was in was spacious and had not one, but two, balconies....a bit of a rarity in hotels. The hotel was busy with tour groups, but as a single traveller, I enjoyed the buzz that they brought. Had dinner and breakfast in the hotel's acclaimed Samuel's Restaurant which has been turning out yummy food for over 30 years. Great service, great view, great food. All in all, a very pleasant stay.

Colony Hotel, 736 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach

Colony Hotel, 736 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach

One of the many Art Deco style hotels that line Ocean Drive and Collins in South Beach / Miami Beach, Florida. The Colony Hotel was built in 1939. It has 46 rooms including 4 large ocean view suites that have just been redecorated. The four ocean view rooms go for over $400 per night off-season and $650 per night during high season. Three of the smaller regular rooms do not have closets (guess which type of room I ended up in). The Colony sign is lit up with blue neon at night. Unfortunately the lighting for the "L" was broken on all three sides of the sign while I was there.

I stayed at the Colony for 5 days in October 2011. The main advantages of this hotel is the location and the reasonable rates (not counting the suites). The prices were affordable since the main tourist season does not start until in mid-November. Despite that, South Beach is still crowded on the weekends. This photo was taken at 9:30 am (which is like 6:30 am in other towns) before the crowds came out.
