i know you can anthropomorphize almost anything but guitar curves are definitely suggestive of the female form.

I posted the color version of this last night, and it was suggested that this might look good in black and white. So here it is.
CHDK: Canon S5 IS using DIY USB remote shutter trigger . ( I used 20 feet of USB extension cables. I didn't need that much, but I was curious if it would still work with that much cable).
Strobist: Canon 580EX II mounted at shoulder height photo left, 1/32nd power, with DIY black straw flash grid. Three small LED flashlights (9 LED's each) were inserted into the bottom of the bell pointing up to provide the light inside the bell. The flash was triggered with a Cactus V2S trigger.

Background Music For Guitar
- Music accompanying action on the screen, but coming from no discernible source within the film.
- Music played in retail establishments, restaurants, lobbies, offices, and anywhere else customers gather. Background music is very effective at establishing a specific mood, energy and pace. It can also strongly support a company's brand image.
- Music intended as an unobtrusive accompaniment to some activity, such as dining in a restaurant, or to provide atmosphere in a movie
- Although background music was by the end of the 20th century generally identified with Muzak or elevator music, there are several stages in the development of this concept.
- A stringed musical instrument with a fretted fingerboard, typically incurved sides, and six or twelve strings, played by plucking or strumming with the fingers or a plectrum
- The guitar is a plucked string instrument, usually played with fingers or a pick. The guitar consists of a body with a rigid neck to which the strings, generally six in number but sometimes more, are attached.
- a stringed instrument usually having six strings; played by strumming or plucking

wmplayer - play speed settings
Not having used a guitar for a while, my ability to play has dimished not only in skill, but also in physically how long I can play before my hands hurt. I've been encouraged by someone to practice more and I've taken that to heart and tried to play more. So the callouses are starting to come back and I'm able to play a little bit longer than when I tried last week.
One thing I've never been too good at is with playing by ear, so I'm going to share a tip for trying to play along with CDs or legally downloaded digital music. This absolutely won't work if your music is illegal. Buy your music!
In Windows Media Player, there is are some nifty built in enhancements. One of them is the "Play Speed Settings" enhancement which lets me change the speed of the music but not affect the tone. If you slow down the music, it won't sound super low. If you speed up the music, it won't sound like the Chipmunks. Some of the songs I try to play with change chords too fast or play the rifts too fast and I can't follow. Slowing down the music has been incredibly helpful in being able to follow.

The Fiddler
The difference between "fiddles" and ordinary violins may be seen in American (e.g., bluegrass and old-time music) fiddling: in these styles, the top of the bridge may be cut so that it is very slightly less curved. This reduces the range of right-arm motion required for the rapid string-crossings found in some styles, and is said to make it easier to play double stops and shuffles (bariolage), or to make triple stops possible, allowing one to play chords.

The difference between a violin and a fiddle?
Violins have strings. Fiddles have strangs.

$5 LeapFrog Learning Drum
Editorial Review
When it comes to musical instruments, the drum is arguably one of the easiest to play: just give it a smack. Fortunately, LeapFrog has created a drum that's sure to provide ongoing delight. It's an electronic instrument with four different settings. When set to "ABC," each pat of the drum displays a letter on the drum's top while a friendly voice says the letter out loud. The letters are sequential, so the drummer learns the alphabet. The "123" option works in a similar way. There are also options for musical notes and a traditional drum sound. An off control and two volume settings will be welcomed by parents who are sure to hear this drum being played with repeatedly. If the young drummer pauses for a while, the friendly voice plays a little song or asks to be played with again. --John Moe

Day 235/365 - Diamonds on My Windshield
[9:46pm]
Nothing terribly exciting happend at school today. Except of course we got report cards and I got all A's for the first time in a while. My Grades were...
English: 94
Biology: 93
Pre-Calculus: 95
AP Government: 94
I managed to skip out on sitting in Mrs. Faulks class room during 5th and 6th period by finding some trivial thing to do.
School got out at 3 and we went straight home, only to sit around the house for an hour and a half before we climbed back into the car and drove down to Myrtle Beach for dinner.
We ate at Umi, its a pretty good resturaunt and their steaks are awsome. Although a bit pricey...
Anyway after dinner we finally went to the Carolina Oprey to see my guitar teacher play in one of the shows they do there. It was based around 60's, 70's and 80's music (All of the stuff that I listen too) and it was awsome. I knew all of the songs and they did a great job. Especially when the guy who teaches lead played Free Bird.
That was Awsome.
Anyway it was raining when we got out of the show so on the way back through Myrtle Beach, I took this of the car's window. It didn't turn out exactly like I wanted but I think it's good enough. I've been wanting to do this shot for a while but I haven't had the opportunity.
Also, we finally sold my Digital Piano downstairs so the next time we get up to Wilmington I'll be coming home with (hopefully) new keyboard, an Ovation acoustic guitar and a Gibson Les Paul Standard. I hope it all works out but you never know.
It's funny, Its 2:30 in the morning and I'm wide awake, I'm still wired from an espresso I had at dinner. I guess I'll crash within the next hour.
Probably a good thing seeing as I have to get up at 8 tomorrow morning to go to guitar. But at least I'm really looking foward to that. I also found out today that Louie is probably going to be giving me private lessons after he finishes with the group lessons for the year. Should be fun.
Lead, Kindly Light....
Lead, kindly Light, amid th'encircling gloom,
lead thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home;
lead thou me on!
Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see
the distant scene; one step enough for me.
I was not ever thus, nor prayed that thou
shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path; but now
lead thou me on!
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
pride ruled my will: remember not past years!
So long thy power hath blessed me, sure it still
will lead me on.
O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till
the night is gone,
And with the morn those angel faces smile,
which I have loved long since, and lost awhile!
John Henry Newman, 1833

I met all three of these lovely friends my high school freshmen year during a winter break trip/tour for orchestra to Taiwan and Japan. I was always very intimidated to go to orchestra every Saturday because I didn't know anyone and I wasn't that great at making new friends, but after our winter break trip I was excited to go every week just to be with my new friends.
Crystal Wang (Top Left)
I never know what's going on in Crystal's mind because she barely talks! But when she does, the conversation ends in laughter or it's always a happy comment. I don't think I've ever seen Crystal Wang in any other emotion other than happy. Even when she says something depressing or sad, her face still has the shape of a smile. I believe that Crystal is one of those friends that anyone can depend on. She'll try her best to help you and she doesn't really complain at all.
Ashley Kam (Top Right)
Although shorter than me, she's far more wise and OLDER than I am. Just kidding. I started talking to Ashley a whole lot after my trip to Spain. I don't know how or why but it just happened and I sure am glad that it did. Everyday after school we would talk online about our day, any new stories about our life we had, or just about random things. Time sure passes when you're having fun! Although we've known each other for 5 years, we never really talked until three years ago. And I feel like that within those three years, the rest of the two years that were lost have been gained back. She can be very responsible which gives me the feeling that I have a temporary older sister when she's with me. She even invited me to go to Las Vegas with her family to see a concert which basically brought me into the Mando Pop world. I don't think I will ever forget that experience, 1) it was the first time I went somewhere on vacation without my family and 2) I never would have thought that someone I just started a close friendship with would ask me to join her on her family vacation!
Leslie Kam (Top Left)
Oh Leslie Kam. I don't even know where to start. Although we didn't talk as much, as soon as we met up during orchestra rehearsals we would have fun either way. We did work together one month during Senior year. And I believe that was a very unique bonding time for us. And I'm pretty glad we're going to the same college now. Whenever I need a violin to play with or piano! I know who to call.

Music Man's in Moncks Corner
We automatically think of barbecue restaurants as rural fixtures, free standing small buildings on secondary roads or at the edge of small towns. We don't think of Moncks Corner, SC, as a major metro area, but it has grown considerably. It once had a downtown section which decayed with the urban sprawl of shopping malls and scattered subdivisions. The town is making an effort to revive their friendly past.
We came upon Music Man's Bar-B-Que restaurant by accident after missing a turn toward Eutawville, SC, with Schwettmann's on our mind. Just over the tracks on Railroad Avenue we spotted the place. It is sandwiched between other restored downtown structures in what appears to be a sincere effort at urban renewal. It seemed unnatural to eat barbecue within the confines of an incorporated municipality, but we were hungry and Music Man's was inviting.
Clean barbecue joints surprise us. While orderly, fresh and efficient, it was also a bit funky, folksy and very hospitable. On entering a little girl would pop up out of a cardboard box long enough to greet visitors then retire within the box awaiting the next customer. The walls are adorned with signed illustrations of wide ribbons of sheet music, a guitar and a set of drums. We were told that the fellow who owns the place is a long time drummer in a popular local band. Today was their first anniversary in this cozy little place.
You may eat in or take out as you wish. The buffet is very nice and the pork is offered cooked with or without sauce. We enjoyed the meal so much that we're considering placing Music Man's on our list of the 20 top BBQ joints in South Carolina. When folks are partial to a particular BBQ spot they will drive all day to get there. We think that Music Man's will become an important draw in the renewall of this section of downtown Moncks Corner.
As we eased out of Moncks Corner an organized crowd was gathering just across the tracks. It looked festive, the police were smiling and a street dance was about to begin. The shindig seems yet another constructive and family oriented gesture of support for the revival of this old downtown section. As wildly increasing growth in population and construction sweeps Berkeley County, the restoration of charm and comfort to downtown Moncks Corner is encouraging.

102/365: Holy Crap
My friend Shilo from High School had this picture on her Facebook, and I snatched it. She snapped it at a gig at a place called Laser City in Box Elder, South Dakota, which was half video games and half band-stage.
If memory serves, these are the facts:
1) The band was called Total Stranger
2) It was probably 1988, possibly 1989
3) Yes, I know: the hair...
4) My best friend Danny Haney was the drummer...and I haven't heard from him since within a few months of this picture being taken
5) That's me on the maple Peavey Fury Bass Guitar, and I still have it at home
5.1) Judging by where my right hand is...I'm doing the Super-Cool Eddie Van Halen Two-Handed Fretboard Tapping Technique, probably putting a fill into the song where it didn't need one...
6) I can't for the life of me remember who the guitarist/singer was. John something? The guy was fifteen years older than we were, and he was a total jackass. Quit the band before what ended up being our last gig. Possibly the one pictured above. Just announced to us that he was "moving to LA...tomorrow" as we went onstage
7) The day Danny got that Tama Aristar set was one of the happiest days of our lives
8) Shilo may have the only picture ever taken of this band
9) Shilo was probably sitting next to her friend Vicky, who was a very sweet girl I kept breaking up with because I was stupid
10) I think I fell off that stage once with a different band: hard to believe, given the amazing, sturdy craftsmanship...
Joăo Bosco
Born in Minas Gerais, author, composer, singer, guitarist Joao Bosco was brought to Rio de Janeiro by his first co-writer, Vinicius de Moraes. In Rio, he was first introduced to the sea, to Tom Jobim, to "Bossa Nova", to Chico Buarque, and many other important Brazilian artists. During the 1970s Joao met poet Aldir Blanc, and together they composed a vast repertoire, most of which is now considered classics of Brazilian Popular Music. Other collaborations would come his way, resulting in many more successful partnerships. Currently Joao is working with his new partner and son, Francisco Bosco, a young intellectual poet and Brazilian music connoisseur. Joao's right hand technique imprints a very particular rhythm to his music. His voice, full of soul, still sings Brazil's melodies with the blood of African Slaves in his veins, and weeps melodic songs from his Lebanese ancestors. This ethnic mix makes Joao Bosco a worldwide acclaimed eclectic artist, famous for his musical creations, having a very personal signature.

Day 359
Another haircut, this one's not nearly as screwed up as the last two were. Lately I've had another majore flare up of what I like to call Gear Acquisition Syndrome. This, of course, impacts a wide number of things I enjoy: photography, guitar, motorcycling, marksmanship/hunting. To date, I think the single largest GAS flare up was clearly photography related, costing some $12k when it was all said and done. The second most rapidly growning tab would definitely go to my motorcycle, but that is largely due to the cost of a brand new motorcycle. I'd say guns and guitars are about neck and neck, they've both certainly been major interests of mine for long enough.
Some folks might look at my collection of guns, or guitars - and wonder what the heck I could possibly do with so many of either. My answer is simple - use them. I don't own a single guitar I don't play, or a single amplifier I don't use. All of my pistols are shot as often as possible, ditto my rifles. $2300 custom 1911 to $70 Russian military surplus rifle, they all get used.
Anyhow, this latest resurfacing of GAS is on the firearms train again. Somehow, I've managed to go over two years without purchasing a single firearm! On one hand, I'm well outfitted already with what I have. Hunting rifle? Check. Plinker? Check. Varmint control? Check. "Combat Handgun"? Only the best. Compact CCW pistol? Accurate, inexpensive, and made in the USA. What's missing then? Practically speaking, probably not a single thing, but who is really concerned with practicality anymore?
I greatly enjoy handloading my own ammunition, and the .308 Winchester case provides a lovely platform for a variety of calibers. Sometime in the last few days, I decided why not celebrate that entire family. .243 Winchester was the first centerfire cartridge I ever fired, .260 Remington is a very impressive round, 7mm-08 Remington represents 7mm beauty in a non-magnum short action cartridge, .308 Winchester has long been one of the most popular .30
