Designed by Adams, Holden & Pearson, 55 is one of the most significant buildings in London - this area was substantially reconstructed in the late 1980s and now has shop units flanking the corridor. Here you can see the lavish use of the austere travertine marble and the simple, clean aesthetics that Charles Holden developed for the building.

Tea saponinÓ„

Tea saponinÓ„

6‚
Tea saponin is triterpenoid saponin substance abstracted from wild camellia fruit. The product tastes bitter and spicy. It stimulates mucous membrane of nose to lead to sneeze. The pure product is fine white column-shape crystalloid with strong moisture absorption ability. It presents apparent acidity to methyl red and is hard to be dissolved in non-water methanol, non-water ethanol, and cannot be dissolved in organic dissolvent like acetone, benzene and petroleum ehter. It's easy to be dissolved in water, water-contained methanol, water-contained ethanol, glacial acetic acid, acetic anhydride and pyridine etc. The saponin is easy to deposit when tea saponin is added with muriatic acid. Its melting point: 224.

Appearance: light yellow powder
The content of active matter: e80%
Foaming ability: 160~190mm Baumé degree: e20Be
Water-solubility: easy Foaming ability: 160~190mm
PH value: 5.0~6.0 pH value: 5.0~6.0

Application
The environment-protection type pesticide agent produced with the main body of tea saponin can be widely applied in insecticide and antiseptic to increase effects, dissolution and reduce toxin. Meanwhile, it's also a good organic pesticide on the account of the function of tea saponin and biotin and can stimulate the growing crops. The special pesticide made of tea saponin has effective eliminative function for cutworm, angleworm and eelworm without any soil pollution for environmental protection.
The application of tea saponin in aquatic and livestock breeding industry
The feedstuff additive made of tea saponin is effective substitute antibiotic and can reduce the diseases for both humans and animals so as to improve the whole aquatic breeding industry and eventually bring healthy meat for people.
Regarding the shrimp breeding, tea saponin can prevent the black-gill shrimp disease and control parasites as well as improve the ecdysis and growing. It can be made for pond-cleaning agent on the account of hemolysis and fish poison functions (3ppm will bring good effects) in order to kill harmful fish but no harm to shrimp (safe concentration is 20ppm). In livestock breeding, it can reduce the level of cholesterol inside the animals and develop low-cholesterol animal products.
The application of tea saponin in building industry
Tea saponin can be used as foaming agent and foam-stabilization agent in air-added concrete production. It has the degrease function and can improve aluminum spreading suspended character, enhance the stability of concrete setting, improve the air-hole structure to make the products firmer and more reliable. The effects are much better than honeylocust powder and nekal. The strong emulsification and dispersing can be applied to the production of paraffin emulsification agent which has been successively used in the fiberboard gel crafts and apparently reduces the moisture absorption of products and increases the waterproof capability and the fiberboard quality.
Tea saponin can also be used in sensitization, beer industries and anti-corruption production with wider and wider application range.

The application of tea saponin in daily-use chemical industry
The surface activation of tea saponin can be used for production of hair-washing agent such shampoo etc. It has good effects for hair washing, protection and inflammation diminishing and scurf elimination. Tea saponin can also be used for washing clothes and will not reduce color or shrink and therefore the textile will not lose luster.
The application of tea saponin in medicine
Tea saponin has apparent characteristics of anti-leakage and anti-inflammation. During the primary period of inflammation, it can normalize the permeating of capillary vessel; regulate blood sugar content, reduce cholesterol content, prevent cardiovascular disease; it has cough-relieving function and can cure the old people's bronchitis and various edema; it can also eliminate bacteria and restrain white monilia albicans, escherichia coli; it can also restrain the alcohol absorption, increase the alcohol dissolution so that it can be used for sobering up after being drunk.
The application of tea saponin in drainage in oil field
Tea saponin is a kind of large molecule quality net-shape structure surface activator with good foaming ability and strong anti-acid and salt-decomposing capability as well as large quantity of water-combination. It's a kind of good daily-use chemical surface activator and high-efficiency oil field foam drainage agent.

hello baby bear!

hello baby bear!

this morning while I was rushing about to get town ready, Oscar, our cat most sensitive to outside visiors was rushing about as well. I went out to feed the birds and did mindfully look up the hill to the plum tree to make sure there were no bears in the yard. Tossing out seeds I heard something from the interior hedge, leaning down and looking in, something furry obscured by shadows in the low trunk of the maple, about eight feet away I had treed baby bear. This is one of the two cubs to visit early in the spring, fattening up nicely as you can see. Hard to remember still a bear, still can't touch, best photographed through the window which is where I was shortly after this discovery! He enjoyed the stolen suet and a few sunflower seeds, I had to leave before he did, when I returned from town, he had moved along, which is of course the better thing. Lovely to see, the reason why we have to be clean freaks with the bbq and let garbage service go from april to november, and now perhaps hang the suet higher!

You can see I didn't tackle the random stuff on the left yet, that's for another day, unfortunately.

Eastbourne Pier

Eastbourne Pier

Eastbourne Pier is a firm favourite on the south coast of England and has an air of refinement and charm about it that is almost unique in terms of the piers that are still remaining today.

Although it has undergone significant refurbishment over the years, this has always been very tastefully done and the end result is a construction that somehow is rather quintessentially English, in a somewhat understated way, less ostentatious perhaps.

Eastbourne pier was officially opened in 1870, but construction work was not completed until 1872. It was fairly rigorously constructed and has not been so adversely affected by storms or floods, as some of its counterparts. The only significant damage it has suffered was in 1877, when part of the pier at shore side was literally washed away, but since then there has been relatively little incidence of damage.

When it first opened, the pier was simply a promenade facility with little in the way of facilities. A total of 6 little kiosks were provided, but in effect that was about it. It was (and indeed still is) a good length at about 303 metres (1,000 ft). So it makes a nice walk and the Victorians and Edwardians soon took Eastbourne to their hearts, as they took their promenades on the pier.

As Eastbourne Pier became more popular, more services and facilities were provided, including a rather opulent pavilion, with a 400 seat capacity, but this was to be short-lived, since it was only constructed in 1888 but was then replaced with a much grander 1000 seat theatre as well as a bar and office accommodation. Two ‘saloon’ type facilities were introduced halfway down the pier as well, so there was plenty to do.

1912 saw a new entrance being created, which was truly Edwardian and perhaps a little more minimalist than certain Victorian ‘follies’ had been. This air of Edwardian simplicity is still very much retained in Eastbourne Pier today, even though the Edwardian entrance gates were replaced in the 1950’s. They are not, however, vulgar or ugly, but have been designed in accordance with Edwardian charm. So in some ways the fact that part of it was built in Victorian times and part in Edwardian times, makes it an almost unique blend of the best from these two eras, with the Edwardian entrance perhaps influencing it more than the Victorian internal, which has been substantially changed over the years.

Eastbourne PierOne of the classic features of Eastbourne Pier is the camera obscura, which was actually introduced as part of the 1888 refurbishment and is a wonderful attraction, having been very lovingly restored in 2003. This has a simply amazing 360° projection. Truly stunning and it is quite amazing to think that it is so old.

Eastbourne Pier also boasts a nightclub, which used to be the former theatre, but which is quite unique as piers go. Despite the fact that Eastbourne is viewed as being a retirement option, there is not just the nightclub on the pier, but also other things happening at night, such as the Bar Copa, which unlike the nightclub is free. Bar Copa is open every night till late, but the Atlantis nightclub is only open from Wednesday through to Saturday, but you can dance the night away until 2 am, all year round.

For those who are too young… or even too old to go clubbing there is still a lot to do. There are two games arcades, where you can play very space age games or just stick with the old traditional and well loved games, such as the good old slot machines.

Eastbourne also has a little bit of an edge on some of her contemporaries, through having a glass blower, where you can see the most intricate of ornaments being blown, literally before your eyes. The shops are also very good and are just that little bit different.

There are plenty of options for eating, from cheap and cheerful chips to a family type restaurant or deliciously traditional pub food. So you won’t be stuck for somewhere to eat, with all budgets and tastes catered for. From café stalls to nice dining, the choice is excellent.

The fact that Eastbourne is a relatively genteel resort, as English seaside resorts go, is reflected in the fact that it does not have the fairground rides that are so prevalent on other piers. So at Eastbourne, you will not be scared to death on some death defying ride. No, you can gently amble down the pier, taking a pause to look through the camera obscura whilst you are going down, pop into one of the little shops or just clean out your system with some good old fashioned fresh air as you stride (or stroll, depending on your preferences) down the pier.

Eastbourne PierFamilies and disabled people will find everything on one level. The amusement arcades are the main attractions for children, or the camera obscura, but there is no dedicated children’s play area.

At night, Eastbourne pier is lit up which shows off its proud entrance and beautiful shape perfectly. It is a wonderful spectacle and it lends Eastbourne Pier an air of elegance that is very apt

basement 1

basement 1

these are two photos of a short series i'm doing of my parent's house, the house i spent my teenage years in
the stupidest part of my life in! it is to document bullshit suburbia, un altered and honest
hilarious and cruel and painful and above all, unecessary and stupid and impractical
but home

they are moving next year, to either buffalo new york or indianoplis indiana depending on where my dad gets sent for his job so this is my last summer here for sure
i don't want to think about it
because i don't have to think about it
so i will just take pictures because i want to remember it the way it was, the way it always will be to me kind of

this is the pantry in the basement
a lot of it is home canned food from my grandpa's farm
there is a shitty organization system
fuck it
i don't feel like explaining the significance of this to myself because i already get it
i don't need to develop this thought further and i don't really want to so

tonight at work when i was cleaning up my coworker recited a poem to me
she wears combat boots to work and all black and has a lot of tattoos
she recited a poem to me about a tarantula
i was feeling awkward at first
a girl who does not stop talking about gothic painters and shit
telling me a poem about tarantulas
i tried hard not the laugh at the idea of this
except, i couldn't laugh, about three minutes into the poem
because i realized
she fucking LOVES this poem
if she remembered this much of it, reciting directly
i stop dusting and
listen for a minute
the poem starts out fucking stupidly
it is a nature poem in the beginning and i do not like nature poetry
it is about the beauty of a tarantula
and i am thinking, "ok. big deal"
in my stupidly subconsciously arrogant post-teenage brain
and she goes on and on and then she says something like
"when it rains a lot it scares the tarantulas right out of the trees" and then she looks at me and says
"if you are the kind of person who believes that ugly things should not die just because they are ugly then you should build a swimming pool in your yard and craft life preservers for the tarantulas and collect them in the mornings after big storms and set them free, and then after you set them free the tarantulas will not bother you anymore because they will remember that you loved them and they will tell their friends that you loved them and then you will throw them life buoys and they will throw you life buoys"
i looked at her as she recited this hugely long poem with a little smile on my face
it was silly, this poem was sort of dumb but also sort of pretty
i didn't say that though
i just said, "that was nice. thank you"
when she was done and while the poem was a little okay but mostly kind of dumb what i really enjoyed was seeing how much she enjoyed it, that is what i really liked and what i thought was actually poetic and what was actually pretty
she put her arm around me in the new fiction section and told me i was nice
that is when i laughed a little in my brain and started dusting again and moved down the aisle and changed the subject
i said, what is your favorite series of books
and she followed me for two more aisles while i dusted, telling me about science fiction fantasy novels
then she started talking about harry potter and this is when i couldn't take it anymore and actually laughed out loud
i felt bad but i wasn't laughing at her and she knew that
i was just laughing at the situation
and i smiled and said, yeah i remember the day the seventh book came out, i heard this place was nuts
she said yeah i worked, it was dumb
i said, i'm sorry
she said, i'm not, cause when i went home i started reading the book and then i stopped reading the book because all i could think about was that this was probably one of the first times in human history when millions and millions of people were all reading and experiencing the same book at the exact same time
and i said, yeah
and then i said i like that thought
and she said, do you think that will ever happen again
and i grinned and said
maybe if you write a book about tarantulas in life preservers or raccoons inside of minivans with airbag systems
and she didn't get it and i didn't expect her to
but it was hilarious to me
and i laughed forever
and i felt alone and i felt
happy

Drew McCarsky - Great Grouper Getaway Finalist

Drew McCarsky - Great Grouper Getaway Finalist

My family have always fished. Being was born and raised in the Pt. Pleasant NJ area, it was the thing to do.I was a lucky kid too, I was shown how to be a outdoorsman, and most importantly, a fisherman by my Dad Harold McCarsky. Everyone knew my dad. He was the guy that since he was a mechanic and hydrolic tech, if your boat broke, he'd fix it- usually for a pizza and a 6 pack.He knew all the local secrets on Stripers, And surf fishing in general. Everyone would invite him out to fish, he'd take me sometimes. When I got a bit older, he'd take me to the big Surf tournaments in atlantic city, Asbury Park and brigantine to name a few. It was his passion and he was good at it. He loved to share his knowledge, He loved to help someone else catch them like he could. He figured if nothing else, It was that many less flounder I had to clean to give some fish to the elderly neighbors. Dad would stop by with a bag ful of fillets of flounder or Pollock steaks, whtever- He felt he was helping the "Old folks" enjoy "the Shore".As years passed, Dad got sick from heart failure and diabetes. He was overweight and not taking care of himself. There was no beach buggy access, so for a big guy with heart failure, He had to stop fishing as well as work. It was tough for him.He was an Icon on the Jetties and the Surf line. He'd be out all kinds of weird times of the day and night fishing or catching Herring so he could fish! He had to give up his first love- Surf fishing, something he took on the chin. We'd fish the Pt. Pleasant canal for black fish and stripers in the early fall and late spring. I could see the pain dad had in him. He loved t! o fish.H e would say that "right now, they are thowing old creek chubs. Black and silver in the pocket- they are proably killing those bass. The thing too is: Dad would toss you in the Drink if he ever saw you taking a short bass, "Back snagging" fish (other than bait) or doing anything he considered not in the best interest of Sportsfishing. He was 6 foot 4 inches and nearly 390 Lbs, You were not going to argue! One of his dreams were coming true on a bright note- We opened a tackle shop, Started by hand tying the thousands of rigs ourselves, as well as resoration of older rods. I would buy then from garage sales and refinish and rewrap then. If it just needed a guide, would do my very best to replace the guide, re finish it and sell it as a restored rod. That was our starting point. It was also a big key into a guy who was hard to appreciate sometimes. I did not understand my dad. He was a Motor head, Jock and my brothers and him semed to have a better raport than me. I was the musician, the bookworm, the nerd. If it wasn't for Duck hunting and fishing-I'd be called someother things! The one tradition My Dad and I had was, No matter how sick, how broke, how whatever- Dad would take me out to Bay head beach front, Karge' street in Bat head to be exact, For the Fall Bluefish run. Every November 25th, My Birthday. In 1984, inspite of his swollen legs, panting like crazy, he managed to get to our spot. We had a ball, afterwords, we would sit at the inlet and enjoy a breakfast of Smoked whiting and a cold beer. the next season,Our Shop was doing fantastic, We had masses of loyal customers. I was putting out a few customer poles a week. We were really successful! Everyone knew if you had a question ,something broke, you just wanted to show your kid a good time, Harold was there for you. He would give a lot of stuff to the kids at next to nothing or free! He was a sucker for alittle girl going snapper fishing with her dad or grandpop, I would see Dad give her a pole and reel, a little tackle box with bobber and things! that sh e would not get hurt on, then never ring it up. he'd say to bring him some live killies for the Fluke fisherman. He sponsored a big fishing tournament that the kids would do every summer. He thought he could keep them off trouble and drugs if they were doing something fun. He was a great guy to the town. We were getting to the best fishing on the Jersey shore-The beginning of fall. Stripers, Blues, Weakfish (Sea trout)Kingfish,Flounder! My Dad died of Heart failure,September 1985. I took it hard- a lousy time to take him away I figured.Dad and I would argue about stuff in the shop, But behind that, We had finally found a link that made us really close. Some thing I had a hard time doing with my dad sometimes. It was weird though, the day he died, I was fishing literally under his hospital windows at the "Maxxon ave. beach" this little sandy spot on the Manasquan river. I was into huge snowshoe and yellow tail flounders! I was the only guy on the whole place catching them. every catch,I would hold up another one towards the hospital, unaware that my dad had passed. Someone had said it was like someone was putting the fish on the hooks for me! At the funeral, I thought about that statement again...And allowed a smile at the possibi

With the North wind howling outside it is lovely to have my feet resting near to the burner on a wee log and dreaming the dream of days gone bye..

A wee story comes to mind of a day by the river ,not long ago

So as the snow outside retreats up the ben ,no longer a carpet of pure white snow more a thread bare rug discarded across the glen.

let me tell you of a day in the magical mountains of SCOTLAND.

As i made my way down the moss covered bank i pushed gently on the silver birch branch in front of me..

I knew at once this was a place i wanted to sit and watch a while

a wee golden pool at the foot of a waterfall was visible through the wood lined banks

The silver birch was in full leafed splender and here and there spindly branches leaned out across the peaty water and dipped there tips into the warm water.

The sky above was filled with a moon so large that it felt you could leap on it and go for a night ride across the sky .

the wee river leading from the pool was bubbling and dancing around large rocks in it’s way under the moon light

as i made my way to the edge of the pool i could see some slight movement from the surface of the pool so i carefully took my seat and focused on the spot

for the next couple of seconds nothing stirred in this wee piece of heaven ,then YES

i was sure it is .it is a salmon one of the monarchs of the mountains a fish that i believe embodies all about us Scots.

a great wanderer a fighter and such passion to reach the place of its birth

So as i sat there every nerve a tingle ,the joy at being able to witness the return of this great fish

his head out of the water looking at the waterfall for the way forward over this last great barrier to the pool of his birth less than 20 yards away.

The journey he had just completed seemed to flash in his eye a journey off thousands of oceanic miles or more, perils and dangers than he cared not to think off,the day he had finally spotted the river estuary but he had made it and with a final sum of his energy he knew he would be there soon..

he seemed to gaze at me for a split second then with all his reserved energy he began to climb out of the water twisting this way and that in an effort to release all the energy at one single explosion and almost as if in slow motion he gained high first one foot then another and just as it seemed he would make it he fell backwards into the pool

I watched as for a couple of minutes no movement on the pool i feared he had used all his energy and with a hint off sadness i looked to the moon still beaming still beaming how many times had you seen this journey i thought .

Then a slight movement in the golden bubbly waters and i knew he was back (like i said a true SCOT) the battle was not over and with an even more dramatic burst of power he leapt clean 3 foot in the air and with the moon shinning brighter as if in encouragement a final splash at the surface he made it and with a quick glance backwards to me he headed to the pool of his birth there in the magical mountains of the northern country of Scotland..

then from nowhere fish first one or two then what seemed hundreds filled the pool and started to scale the waterfall from all angles fish leapt and failed the jump then more would leap and some succeeded this seem to send more and more hope until they seemed to take the barrier in their stride but a few with every ounce of energy spent drifted to the bank DEAD and DYING ..

at that moment i was about to get and go home when from the corner off my eye two huge yellow things seemed to fall from the sky

the moon was hidden behind a wandering cloud but still enough light escaped to allow me to see what it was

An eagle larger and more colourful than i have ever seen swooped legs stretched out talons at the ready ,wings folded back plummeted through the gap in the trees and with an amazing accuracy landed on one of the floundering fish and gently came to earth his meal well and truly secure

With a loud call that reverberated across the glen he tucked into his meal one monarch feeding another .the way it has always been

We only really get paper stuff, toiletries, canned things, and pasta at the supermarket, so we don't go very often. It's a shitty PathMark. I buy most of our food during the week across the street at a big fruit and vegetable place, where I can also get Nutella, but not toilet paper.

The entrance to the Coffee Pot, just off Rundle Mall.

The Coffee Pot was a small nook which catered towards homeless smokers. They would have liked to have had paying customers but the kids drove them away. It was my social nexus until it closed NYE 2001. I remember, among other things, spending NYE 2000 curled up on a sofa listening to Ben Folds Five _The Autobiography of Reinhold Messner_ while crowds seethed outside.

It used to be owned by a man named Peter who I'm told died of a heart attack in 2003, two years after it closed.

We're all very sad that it closed.

Robert Cremean, Crocker Art Museum, Marsyas

Robert Cremean, Crocker Art Museum, Marsyas

MARSYAS (SKIN/MYTH, detail of diptych)
Wood panel, gesso, acrylic, colored pencil
80" x 48"

Transcription of the hand written voice of the Skin of MARSYAS (Skin/Myth) on the panel below.

The Voice of the skin of MARSYAS:

Skin/Myth

"I am the skin of Marysyas. Torn from the form of myself, I replicate and define that which urged my existence. I represent the appearance of things—that which people remember—that which people prefer to believe. I am the first level of comprehension. I make acceptable that which cannot be accepted. I am metaphor. I stand between. Through me is nothing made something. I illuminate the void. How fragile I seem and yet when stretched tightly over the drum of silence my song can shake the universe. From points of light, I shape the heavens. With points of light, I constellate the night. There is no absence I cannot conquer...no death I cannot defeat. Transmuted, the dead, like seeds in the pockets of the living, are dispersed and carried about awaiting exploitation. Awaiting the hand to cast them out to live and live again. Awaiting the hand to tattoo metaphor after metaphor on the skin of Marsyas. Stripped from history, reborn as myth. History is that which is left behind, the dry corpse of what was. Myth is the porous, breathing Now. The skin of Marysas. Freed from arrogant linearity, I surface now and then to assert my immortality. Let me sing my song. Listen through the pores. Soak me up. Do not funnel my song through the ear of reason. My song is irrational. Not only double metaphors will you hear but triple, quadruple, and on and on until you are dizzy with discord. Soak me up. Soak up my song. Let it drench you. Let it immerse you in myriads of metaphors. Let it constellate the heavens with centaurs and dragons and finally to see the beginning of you entrapped in light. And when you see the beginning of you, you will grasp the skin of Marsyas, the myth of Marsyas, the truth of Marsyas. And the truth of Marsyas will enfold you: only by separating oneself from the arrogance of history can one sing ones song. The song of songs—that which drenches and enters through the pores. Acceptance. I am the song of Marsyas, the skin of Marsyas, the myth of Marsyas. I am metaphor, that which lies between. I am the tissue of response. Through sight or sound, I present myself for acceptance. Painting, sculpture, music and poetry, these are the skin of me, that which can be seen and touched and heard. These messengers, this skin, this tissue of sight and sound, come bearing the silence. Those who embrace the skin of Marsyas are enfolded in silence and re-create the silence within the silence. And within the re-creation is created Art. Art, silence, myth, and metaphor— this is the skin that lies between, that which lives, that which is separated from Marsyas, from arrogance, from history, from death. I do not cover, I cannot cover all the extremities of men. Other myths and other meanings contain their own significance. The myth of Marsyas is the separation of Art from ego, metaphor from history, silence from noise. I do not carry the values of commerce, the prayers of religion, or the tattoos of war. These are not my being, neither are they my immortality, nor my song. How definitive I am; my instruction, unmistakable. My embrace can effect eternal change. Stripped from the body of Marsyas, from hubris and contaminating ego, I am free expression, the song of songs. Owned by no one, I enter the pores of the receiver and immerse them in silence, the song of songs. Those who seek to control me, to force entry through eye and ear and intellect to place me in time or capture me by explanation seek only to reattach me to my body, to Marsyas, to arrogance, pretension, and possession. Through noise, they would distort my being. Through noise, they would obtect the silence. They are frightened. They fear the flaying of the ego. They fear the void. They protect themselves by deflecting the splicing blade, the unification of silence, the transparency of the void. Vertigo compels them and commands their tongue. Uttering vague and explicit dates and observations, they seek to contain the chaos of embrace. One who embraces the skin of Marsyas will deafen this noise, will be free of this noise. The skin of Marsyas, the song of Marsyas will release the silence and circumscribe the void. But, they claim, the myth of Marsyas is a cautionary tale. This is obvious but the true instruction lies deep within my skin. They applaud the punishment of Marsyas. He was, in fact, a fool. However, it is my liberation that is the message, not his punishment. They grasp Marsyas, not his skin. Their fear prevents them. They cling to their egos as I once clung to Marsyas. What do they fear? Why this obsession with noise and compulsion to control. Do they not see their reflection in Marsyas? They, too, are guilty of presumption and pretension. Are they blind? They embrace the same folly as Marsyas. They fear ab

what is in a beard

what is in a beard

The position that Islam has, or will have, in the world has a great deal to do with how the Muslims look at it, and to what extent they practise on its teachings. There was a time when Islam was running through every vein in a Muslim's body, and his actions were a living portrait of the glory and beauty of Islam, so the flag of Islam fluttering proudly in the sky, lifted by the winds of success. The non-Muslims could not dare to question Islamic concepts, because living examples of Islamic perfection were in front of them. When the spirit of Islam started drifting away from the hearts of the Muslims, their bodies were no longer inclined to take all measures, undergo all hardships to practise their flawless religion. The new place for Islam was not a strong firm heart, but a dark, dusty corner in the human mind. It would no longer be nurtured and cared for, upheld and protected by the warmth of love and devotion, but would now be probed and dissected by the cold, merciless and unfeeling instruments of intellect, theory and logic. It was no longer a deep feeling, a faith or way of life, but had become a set of rules, a doctrine or constitution like the ones made by man, to be amended and abridged at will.

Where did we go wrong? The answer is simple. We left the pattern of life of our dear Prophet (sallallaahu alaiyhi wasssallam) who spent his days and nights, his sweat and blood, trying to teach us, and turned to what others had to offer. If we want our respect, dignity and position of honor back, we must revert to that same pattern. This is why the subject of the noble practices of Rasulullah (sallallaahu alaiyhi wasssallam) Sunnah, holds so much weight. This article has been compiled as a reminder of one of the very important Sunnahs the beard. We hope that the readers will not only read it carefully, but will make a concerned effort to convey the information to others.

SOME COMMON EXCUSES

Allah Ta'ala prefers people who sin and admit their mistakes, over those who do good deeds and behave in a conceited manner. It's unfortunate that today we disobey Allah and instead of admitting it, find some sort of excuse to justify our misdeeds, even if it means criticizing the Shariah or inventing our own guidelines for what is important in Islam and what isn't. Below are some common excuses and reasons people use to explain why they don't keep a beard. If you examine these with an objective, Islamic mind you will see how weak and baseless they really are. The purpose of this article is not to condemn anyone or label anyone under a certain category but, when we say 'Islamic awareness' it means Islamic awareness in its entirety, not just what seems appealing. And that is what we are trying to do, so that each Muslim can at least know what is expected from him. The ability to practise comes from Allah.

l. One argument that is commonly heard is that the Qur'an is silent on the issue of the beard. To answer this we ask, "Where in the Qur'an does it say that we are only supposed to act on what is in the Qur'an, and reject the teachings of Rasulullah (sallallaahu alaiyhi wasssallam)?"
The Qur'an very clearly states:
"Obey Allah and the Prophet (sallallaahu alaiyhi wasssallam)"

There are many commandments that are necessary for us to fulfill, but are not mentioned in the Qur'an. Take for example the number of Raka'ats in each Salaat. They have been explained to us by Rasulullah (sallallaahu alaiyhi wasssallam), yet there is no objection on the authenticity and importance of the matter. To accept only some of Rasulullah's (sallallaahu alaiyhi wasssallam) instructions and reject others on the basis that they are not found in the Qur'an amounts to mocking his flawless teachings.

2. Some people forsake keeping a beard, claiming that the reformation of the heart and purification of the soul is their first priority. They argue that it doesn't matter if one doesn't keep a beard, so long as the heart is clean.

This type of reasoning is a symptom of one's misunderstanding (or ignorance) of the basic Islamic fundamentals and concepts. The heart that is actually pure will lead its beholder to complete obedience of Allah and his Prophet (sallallaahu alaiyhi wasssallam). It defies logic to think that one can have a heart free of all corruptive elements and at the same time sin persistently, not wanting to adopt the noble appearance of the Holy Prophet (sallallaahu alaiyhi wasssallam). Everyone will agree that a 'pure' heart will definitely contain the love of Allah. Allah says that if you love me, you must follow the Prophet (sallallaahu alaiyhi wasssallam). If you do so, your love for Allah will prove true, and only then will Allah love you in return.
"Say, (O Muhammad, to mankind): If ye love Allah, follow me; Allah will love you..."

Therefore, it should be correct to say that love for Allah and the disobedience of his Prophet (sallallaahu alaiyhi wasssallam) are two opposite things, and
