Got Kool? It went from chilly to beastly hot in one day. We were in the 90's here at the lake, with the Twin Cities over 100 degrees! I found refuge from the sun in this old cabin, which had been moved from its' original site on Gull Lake to an antique shop in Longville. It was refreshing to see the antique metal Gott cooler hanging from the ceiling, and the Eskimo fan sitting on the old fruit crates. People have always found a way to cope with the summer heat. Career Readiness and Preparation Criteria in Undergraduate Dance Degree Programs In this book, Klein seeks to develop a rubric that can assist colleges, universities, and communities in providing stronger outcomes for students seeking a career path in dance. Beginning with an overview of the historical development of dance and dance education in the United States, this book closely examines the current cultural, educational, and political structures, functions, and mechanisms that influence prevailing public views of this art form in mainstream American life. These views frame fundamental topics for the field of post-secondary dance education regarding curriculum, instruction, and definitions of professional career possibilities. The analysis and interpretation of this research is filtered through a specific lens, with the intention of discovering the effective and ineffective principles and practices within the three examined institutions, which can be applied to developing high success rates of employment among students graduating from future programs. It is further hoped that this study will serve as a catalyst for inter-academic dialogue, in order to strengthen and advocate for the integrity and position of dance education in American colleges and universities. Djibouti is an East-African Nation inhabited by Somali People and Afars etc... Djibouti was a region of the Ancient Land of Punt , the Ancestral Land of the pharaohs . History : Encyclopćdia Britannica located Punt as follows:“In ancient Egyptian and Greek geography, the southern coast of the Red Sea,corresponding to modern coastal Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia ."/ In “The Making of Egypt” (1939). Petrie states that the Land of Punt was “sacred to the Egyptians as the source of their race"/ "In addition to the erection and endowments of many temples listed in the Palermo Stone, the Pharaohs of the Fifth Dynasty were active in expanding the existing trade relations with neighbouring countries , as the King Sahure (2458-2446 B.C.) from this Egyptian Old Kingdom, Dynasty V (2498-2491 B.C.), who made a trade expedition to the Land of Punt . Egyptian ships also reached the shores of the land of Punt on the Somali coast to procure highly valued cargoes of myrrh, ebony and animals, among other goods. " Text Reference: The UNESCO General History of Africa: Ancient Civilization of Africa, Vol, II, General History of Africa, G. Mokhtar, 1990, p 64-68 « Again the representations of the early Puntites, or Somali people, on the Egyptian monuments, show striking resemblances to the Egyptians themselves. » By Brian Brown New York: Brentano's[1923]/ We can understand these similarities through their ancestral history : According to the historian Richard Pankhurst :"""The Egyptians sometimes called Punt land Ta-Netjeru, meaning "Land of the Gods," and considered it their place of origin ." (Richard Pankhurst, The Ethiopian Borderlands:1997) / The greek historian Diodorus of Sicily in his book "Universal history "said that in 6th century before-J-Christ , because of a political crisis in Egypt and the euro-asiatics's infiltrations in Egypt , more than 200 thousands of ancient-egyptians migrated in the south of the Nile in the direction of Ethiopia ,North/East Africa (Now, Soudan, Somalia ,Djibouti,Ethiopia ...) ./ This last historic fact can explain why the somali language is a survived ancient-egyptian language ,according to the british linguist :"The language of ancient Egypt belonged to the Hamitic group;today, of course, the language of Egypt is a form of Arabic, but a descendant of the ancient Hamitic language of Egypt, Coptic, survived untill about the fifteenth century, and is still used as the liturgical language of the Coptic Church.Surviving Hamitic languages are spoken across a large part of North Africa and include Somali." (The english language ,A Historical Introduction," by Charles Barber .) Even, the genetic research prove that the somali DNA is originally from Egypt => Haplogroup E1b1b1a (V68) :19th century before J-Christ => Place of origin : Egypt and northern Soudan . Extract of the research : ( More recently, Tillmar et al. (2009) typed 147 males from Somalia for 12 Y-STR loci, and observed that 77% (113/147) had typical E1b1b1a1b haplotypes. This is currently the highest frequency of E1b1b1a1b found in any single sample population. Similarly, Hassan et al. (2008) in their study observed this to be the most common of the sub-clades of E-M78 found in Sudan, especially among the Beja, Masalit and Fur. The Beja, like Somalis, Sahos ,Afars and Oromos, speak an Afro-Asiatic language and live along the "corridor" from Egypt to the Horn of Africa.) Short Research made by Abdisalam Mahamoud . Basque Y-DNA The above chart includes data from 162 male volunteers who submitted their Y-chromosomal DNA results to Family Tree DNA's Basque DNA project. Individuals who submitted their Y-DNA results claim to be of direct male Basque descent. Contributing volunteers included residents of Europe, Asia, and North and South America. Analysis of the data reveals that 71.6% of the participants in this study carry Y-DNA of haplogroup R1b1 and its subclades. Basque People The Basques as an ethnic group, primarily inhabit an area traditionally known as the Basque Country, a region that is located around the western end of the Pyrenees on the coast of the Bay of Biscay and straddles parts of north-central Spain and south-western France. Since the Basque language is unrelated to Indo-European, it is often thought that they represent the people or culture who occupied Europe before the spread of Indo-European languages there. Y-DNA in the Field of Linguistics Y-DNA haplogroup testing is a valuable tool in the study of historical linguistics. Y-DNA is carried from father to son, and mutates at a somewhat predictable rate. Haplogroups are clades of DNA types that share a distinct defining mutation or mutations. Each such mutation occurred in a single person at some point in the past. Since the person in which that mutation occurred necessarily spoke a language (at least in the time-frame of the past 50,000 years or so), and since a large percentage of children learn to speak the same native language as their father, one can use Y-DNA studies to track the historical evolution of languages, and uncover ancient relationships between living language families, to a surprising degree of accuracy. When using Y-DNA as a tool to discover relationships between living language families, however, one must take into account the fact that there are several reasons why children may not learn to speak the native language of their fathers. The most obvious of such a situation is when the father either moves to a region that speaks a different language or has a child in a region where another language is dominant in addition to his native language (i.e., a more dominant local language is taught in schools, used in business, etc.), and rather than learning the native language of the father, children adopt the local language. The goal in interpreting the data from this study is to determine which, if any, of the individuals whose Y-DNA first contained the defining mutations of the haplogroups, may have spoken a language ancestral to modern Basque, i.e. "Ancient Basque." Haplogroup E Among Basque People 93.8% of those tested reported haplogroups of Eurasian origin, whereas 6.2% reported haplogroup E and its subclades. Haplogroup E is common among ethnic groups which originated along northern portions of the Nile River in Africa, including speakers of Nilo-Saharanm, Niger-Congo, Mande and certain Afro-Asiatic languages. The infusion of Y-DNA haplogroup E among the Basque population likely took place long after speakers of the ancestral Basque language arrived on the Iberian Peninsula, perhaps after the Afro-Asiatic speaking Moors invaded southern Europe. That is to say, the Basque language is unlikely to share a common origin with the Nilo-Saharan or Afro-Asiatic language families, although males of Northern African descent who migrated north to the Iberian Peninsula apparently interbred with women of the Basque population, perhaps influencing the local "Ancient Basque" language, but not replacing it. Outliers in Haplogroups L, O and Q Of the 162 individuals tested, there was one individual who carried haplogroup L, one who carried haplogroup O, and one who carried haplogroup Q. These haplogroups are of Eurasian origin, but are probably not associated with speakers of Ancient Basque. The individual who carried haplogroup Q resided in China and reported that his most distant known paternal ancestor resided in Mexico and had a Basque surname. It should be noted that Y-DNA haplogroup Q is the most common haplogroup among native (non-European) Mexicans, and not likely indicative of a Basque origin, despite the Basque surname. Haplogroups L and O generally correspond with South Asian and Asiatic languages, respectively. As the present-day Basque language shares little in common with members of these well-studied language families, the individuals likely represent a very small segment of the Basque population who descend from recent (less than 5000 years ago) immigrants to the Basque country from southern and eastern Asia. Haplogroup R1a1 on the Iberian Peninsula While haplogroup R1a1 appears in this sample at a percentage of 3.7%, that rate is similar to, if not less than, the occurrence of R1a1 in surrounding regions. R1a1 likely corresponds to DNA of native speakers of Indo-European languages, who settled the Iberian Peninsula and likely wiped out all recent branches of the Anc Branford CCAF Degree MSgt Mike Branford receives an Associates Degree in Applied Sciences from the Community College of the Air Force. Daniel McTaggart Co. C, 111th U. S. C. Infantry South Kansas Tribune, August 4, 1897: Ex-SENATOR McTAGGART SHOT DOWN It is with profound sorrow that we record the shooting of ex-senator Daniel McTaggert of Liberty, and of his death, and that his slayer was Henry Sheesley, a well known miller formerly of this city, and lessee of the McTaggart Mill, five miles from this city. Differences had arisen between them about the rent of the mill during high and low water, when the mill did not run, and other minor matters, and McTaggart had brought suit in justice’s court and received a judgement for $90 and costs, and had levied upon Sheesley’s flour, grain and other property in the mill, and yesterday was the day of sale. Mr. Sheesley was very bitter over the transaction, denouncing it as a fraud, and especially so when McTaggart refused to allow the judgment to be credited on a note for $240 which McTaggart had given to Sheesley, but which he claimed was not then due. The fact that the money in the flour and grain being sold, had been raised by Mrs. Sheesley, by mortgage on her only property in Missouri, also added to the intensity of Mr. Sheesley’s feelings and he brooded over it and became frenzied. Although ordinarily very quiet and retiring in his manner, he has a high temper and is occasionally violent in his expressions. Yesterday at 10 o’clock Constable C. A. Davis, with Sheesley and his son, McTaggart and his son, and some neighbors went into the mill and the sale was commenced. The constable had sold one lot, and was standing a little in front of Sheesley who stood a few feet distant from McTaggart, he sat on a sack of shorts and his son on the steps near by. As the auctioneer was crying the second lot, a pistol shot was heard and almost instantly a second shot, and as the constable turned Sheesley’s revolver was pointed toward him, he grappled with him, as Mr. Riley and others jumped forward and got the revolver. Capt. McTaggart attempted to rise but fell forward towards the door from loss of blood. He was assisted out in the shade, placed on a cot in a wagon to be hauled home, about half a mile, but suffered so that he had to be taken out and place in the shade of a tree by the road side. The ball entered near the left nipple and ranged downward. He suffered intensely and felling that the wound was fatal, set for Rev. Dr. Wright of this city. Later he was removed to his home where he lingered until 2:15 when he died. The son “Dot” received the second shot, but ran out of the mill before he knew that he was hurt. The ball struck one hand, grazed the breast, and entered the fleshy part of the other arm, but he is not seriously injured. Dr. Andress was sent for, and a message telephoned to Sheriff Moses, who started at once with Dr. Evans. In the meantime Constable Davis with C. W. Wingate and Tom McGee brought Mr. Sheesley to town and he was placed in jail. Acting county attorney Bertenshaw had him arraigned before Esq. Gilmore, and Hon. A. B. Clark appeared for the defendant. Bond was placed at (unreadable); on the announcement of death, he was again arraigned on charge of murder in the first degree and re-committed to jail. Later in the day the county attorney Bertenshaw, with Drs. Surber and Davis, held a post mortem examination at the McTaggart residence. Ex-senator Daniel McTaggart was born in Canada, in 1840, came to America in boyhood, and was living in Iowa when President Lincoln called for 300,000 volunteers. McTaggart early in June 1861, at the age of 21, volunteered in Co. B, 7th Iowa Infantry. He was soon sent to the front and was with Gen. Grant in his first big battle at Belmont, Mo., where 36 out of 48 of McTaggart’s company fell dead or wounded. He, with 98 of his regiment was captured and taken to Memphis, and was confined in a loathsome prison four months. After days of starvation and peril he escaped and when 80 miles away, was recaptured, & sent to Jackson, for 27 days. Then he was transferred to Corinth, and during the battle of Shiloh, he escaped from prison, and made his way to Pittsburg Landing where he rejoined the Union army. At the second battle of Corinth, he was captured a third time, but made his escape that night. At Athens, Ga., with 1,200 others he was captured the fourth time, but got away, and helped to retake the city. He raised a Company of colored troops at Pulaski, Tenn., and was made Captain of Co. G, 3rd U S colored troop, and was on many fields of carnage, and always a brave soldier. At the close of the war he was detailed two years as superintendent of National Cemeteries at Murfreesboro, Nashville and New Albany, and with 300 troops re-interred the bodies of 26,000 fallen comrades. In 1869 he faced westward, and located among the Osages, and in the following year took prominent part in the organization of our county, was appointed HDR PMC-IR Once the hearth If you pay attention on the Humber Valley Heritage Trail, you might get a glimpse of this. It must have been quite a while ago... as you can see, the flue is completely overhung by trees -- hardly conducive to safe cookery. Associated with it, we found a few semi-enclosed sitting areas, constructed of wood with no small degree of craftsmanship and care (even wired for electricity), not far away. A campground? Frontline Security Mk. 39 LMG The Mk. 39 is one of Frontline Security's newest squad automatic weapons. It is heavily inspired by Russian LMGs, the PKP having the most influence, but holds a new take on the idea of supressive fire in a CQB environment. It is intenally suppressed, and chambered for 9x39mm ammunition to increase the amount of wear the suppressor can take before it is no longer effective. It also has a folding stock, and a 150 round magazine. As a homage to the weapons Eastern influence, we added a Kobra styled red dot sight. Sun Guidelines on Public Discourse Sun Guidelines on Public Discourse Many of us at Sun are doing work that could change the world. Contributing to online communities by blogging, wiki posting, participating in forums, etc., is a good way to do this. You are encouraged to tell the world about your work, without asking permission first, but we expect you to read and follow the advice in this note. Advice By speaking directly to the world, without prior management approval, we are accepting higher risks in the interest of higher rewards. We don't want to micro-manage, but here is some advice that we expect you to follow to help you manage that risk. It's a Two-Way Street The goal isn't to get everyone at Sun contributing online, it's to become part of the industry conversation. So, if you are going to write, look around and do some reading first, so you learn where the conversation is and what people are saying. Remember the Web is all about links; when you see something interesting and relevant, link to it; you'll be doing your readers a service, and you'll also generate links back to you; a win-win. Don't Tell Secrets Anything you post is accessible to anyone with a browser. Some sites have a restricted content feature, but keep in mind that external content is NOT as secure as content that resides on a protected inTRAnet — you are responsible for the content you post and the restricted spaces you manage. Common sense at work here; it's perfectly OK to talk about your work and have a dialog with the community, but it's not OK to publish the recipe for one of our secret sauces. Content requiring a non-disclosure agreement or considered Sun Proprietary should NOT be published on Sun's community sites — even in spaces set up to restrict access to Sun employees only. If the judgment call is tough, on secrets or other issues discussed here, it's never a bad idea to get management or Sun legal help before you publish. No Comment Do not comment on work-related legal matters unless you are Sun's official spokesperson for the matter, and have Sun legal and management approval to do so. Policies Apply Sun's Standards of Business Conduct and other Sun Policies (including export compliance, trademark guidelines, privacy requirements, proprietary and confidential information protection, and anti-discrimination) continue to apply. Be Respectful Whether in the actual or a virtual world, your interactions and discourse should be respectful. For example, when you are in a virtual world as a Sun representative, your avatar should dress and speak professionally. We all appreciate actual respect. Be Interesting, but Be Honest Writing is hard work. There's no point doing it if people don't read it. Fortunately, if you're writing about a product that a lot of people are using, or are waiting for, and you know what you're talking about, you're probably going to be interesting. And because of the magic of linking and the Web, if you're interesting, you're going to be popular, at least among the people who understand your specialty. Another way to be interesting is to expose your personality; almost all of the successful online voices write about themselves, about families or movies or books or games; or they post pictures. People like to know what kind of a person is writing what they're reading. Once again, balance is called for; a community site is a public place and you should avoid embarrassing the company and community members. One of Sun's core values is integrity, so review and follow Sun's Standards of Business Conduct in your online community contributions. Write What You Know The best way to be interesting, stay out of trouble, and have fun is to write about what you know. If you have a deep understanding of some chunk of Solaris or a hot JSR, it's hard to be boring or get into too much trouble writing about that. On the other hand, a Solaris architect who publishes rants on marketing strategy or tax policy has a good chance of being embarrassed by a real expert, or of being boring. Don't Write Anonymously If you comment publicly about any issue in which you are engaged in your capacity as a Sun employee, even loosely, you must make your status as a Sun employee clear. You should also be clear about whether, in such commentary, you are speaking for yourself (presumably the normal case) or for Sun. Business Outlook Rules There are all sorts of laws about what we can and can't say business-wise. Talking about revenue, future product ship dates, pricing decisions, roadmaps, unannounced financial results, our share price or similar matters is apt to get you, the company, or both, into serious legal trouble. Stay away from financial topics and predictions of future performance. Quality Matters Use a spell-checker. If you're not design-oriented, ask kiss off For six months I have been myself. Sleeping in, walking the dogs. Breaking things with Morgann. Chatting online in Gmail with my best friend, Melissa. I had a brief stint as a temp before the holidays, where I begrudgingly wore my professional attire, and was on my best behavior, as it was a very, very professional atmosphere. Aside from that very odd assignment, wherein I reverse engineered a UFO with Bob Lazar (not really, but it was that weird), I have been unemployed. Then almost two months ago the incomparable Ara got me an interview where she works downtown. It wasn't glamorous, it didn't pay well, but something is better than nothing, so I took the job. And I have been loving it. Low stress. I can wear whatever I want. My tattoos? I'm clean cut as far as my coworkers go. Pigtails? Who cares? We listen to the radio at top volume. We cut obscene photos from the ad section of The Mercury and tack them up next to the Sexual Harassment poster in the break room. (They are always taken down eventually, but it's quite a riot at lunch time to see something new on the board.) This is the most low-key, easy, fun job I've ever had in my adult life. It makes running the photo lab seem difficult and stressful by comparison. Sure, I'm a photocopier jockey, sure I have to get up at 5 am, but it's been fun. (As an aside, Ara works in a totally different department and is far too clean cut and professional to work in the pit with the rest of us! I say that in a very complimentary way, might I point out.) So here I am, committed to this mindless fun job as I finish my degree. And last week the phone rings. The non-profit where I worked before, in suits and dress shoes, offered me a full time job. They had an opening, posted a job listing on craigslist, in one afternoon received over 200 resumes, none of them qualified or worthwhile. Someone said, "God, I wish we had Jenna!" so the HR manager called me, on the off chance I could come back. I didn't want to, but had a number in mind, an hourly wage, and if they met or exceeded that number, I would realistically have to take the job despite having fun being grungy and relaxed at my current job. They exceeded the number...and I had to take the job. The non-profit has a religious connection so in my mind I have sold my soul to the Catholic church because they were the highest bidder. God will now be buying my beer and birth control pills. : ) But I have to put away my tee shirts, my jeans, my personality. I was even told I am "vivacious" and have to "reel in" my personality. I was told on no uncertain terms that a "camisole goes a long way in extending a professional wardrobe". I could wear a habit, and this chest would still be obvious. But money talks. So next week is my last week of comfort, before I go work in a professional environment again, drag out my nice work clothes, put away the sneakers, tone down the pink eye shadow, and behave like a house plant so I don't get reprimanded. Kiss off, indeed. On the bright side, I can finally afford to replace my tripod and buy some more 120 Velvia for the tulip festival. So if you notice I'm more outrageous in person moving forward than you're used to? It's because I have to bottle it up for 40 hours a week. You have been warned. Master Building Upper West Side, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States The Master Building, erected in 1928-29 to house an apartment hotel and museum, is an innovative and significant example of the work of Harvey Wiley Corbett, an architect influential in skyscraper design, and expresses his successful employment of sculptural massing, vertical emphasis, and the minimal, yet elegant, use of surface ornamentation and historically-inspired detailing. The design of the building includes many strong and well-integrated features representative of the best of New York City's Art Deco style skyscrapers, including patterned brickwork which varies in color from dark at the base to light at the tower, setbacks, irregular and faceted massing of the upper stories, and an ornamental cap. The use of comer windows, influenced by modem European architecture, was the most innovative feature of the building and was cited in contemporary accounts as the first appearance of this feature in a skyscraper in New York City and particularly appropriate for a building with views of Riverside Park and the Hudson River. The Master Building was commissioned by Louis L. and Nettie Horch, followers and patrons of the Russian artist and mystic Nicholas Roerich, to whom the museum was dedicated and from whom the building derives its name; this unusual combination of uses is masterfully reflected in the design. The building has played an important cultural role in New York City, housing first the Roerich Museum and later the Riverside Museum, as well as an art school, the Master Institute of United Arts, and most recently the Equity Library Theater. The Master Building continues to be a distinctive feature in the Upper West Side skyline as one of the most prominent structures along Riverside Drive. "Art Rears a Skyscraper" The Master Building, a skyscraper planned with the unusual dual function of housing both an art museum ami an apartment hotel, brought together three men influential in the arts in New York City. Designed by prominent skyscraper architect Harvey Wiley Corbett, the building was commissioned by foreign exchange broker Louis L. Horch, a wealthy patron of the Russian artist and mystic Nicholas Roerich. A combined venture in real estate development and artistic patronage, the project incorporated a museum dedicated to Roerich's work and facilities for public education in the arts, fulfilling the artist's ideal of uniting the arts with daily life. Innovative in its program, the scheme nonetheless reflected several cultural and architectural trends of the era, and, as described by Corbett in the spirit of the project, ushered in a "new era in art as the first living home of art, [a place] where art and human beings will grow and develop side by side. Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947), who arrived in New York in 1920, fostered a combination of aesthetic and theosophist philosophies, including the tenet that art should be incorporated into everyday life. Roerich, who advanced the theosophist belief in ancient masters who could relay messages and wisdom to modem man, considered himself a master and advised his followers in that role. The activities of the Russian artist, who worked in a neo-primitivist style and is perhaps best remembered today as the set designer for Igor Stravinsky's ballet, "Le Sacre du Printemps" (1920), included exploration of the Himalayan region and advocacy of world peace through the promotion of the Roerich Peace Banner and Pact, a movement to protect cultural monuments during war. The charismatic artist attracted the interest of a large group of New Yorkers who supported him and the institutions he founded: the Roerich Museum where the artist's paintings were exhibited? the Master Institute of United Arts which sought to provide instruction in all of the arts; and the Corona Mundi International Art Center which was devoted to widening the appreciation of art through exhibitions and publishing projects. Chief among Roerich's New York supporters were Louis Horch and his wife, Nettie, who shared Roerich's interests in art and religion. Mrs. Horch was an ardent patron of the arts and considered art education to be a form of public service; the Horches devoted considerable energy and funding to the Master Institute of United Arts and had been instrumental in the backing and management of the Roerich Museum since its founding in 1923. As president of the museum, Horch purchased several hundred paintings from the artist and provided exhibition space in an apartment house he owned at 310 Riverside Drive on West 103rd Street which was the future site of the Master Building. While the artist was trekking through the Himalayan region from 1925 to 1928, Horch and the Friends of the Roerich Museum furthered plans for the Master Building, Horch's property having been deeded to the Master Institute of United Arts. The re-opening of the Roerich Museum in the lower stories of the Master Building Degree Ceremony The Sheldonian Theatre was erected in 1664-8 to a design by Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723) from funds donated by Gilbert Sheldon (1598-1677), who during his long career held office as Warden of All Souls Bishop of London and Archbishop of Canterbury and was elected as Chancellor of the University of Oxford. In 1994 the Theatre was described by the European Commission as "one of the architectural jewels of Oxford". Its purpose was to provide an appropriate secular venue for the principal meetings and public ceremonies of the University, and this remains its purpose today. Here, the University conferred MAs on its alumni on September 14, 2007. Percy Lavon Julian Black Heritage Stamp (April 11, 1899 – April 19, 1975) was an African American research chemist and a pioneer in the chemical synthesis of medicinal drugs from plants. He was the first to synthesize the natural product physostigmine; and was an African American pioneer in the industrial large-scale chemical synthesis of the human hormones, steroids, progesterone, and testosterone, from plant sterols such as stigmasterol and sitosterol. His work would lay the foundation for the steroid drug industry's production of cortisone, other corticosteroids, and birth control pills. He later started his own company to synthesize steroid intermediates from the Mexican wild yam. His work helped reduce the cost of steroid intermediates to large multinational pharmaceutical companies. During his lifetime he received more than 130 chemical patents. Julian was one of the first African Americans to receive a doctorate in chemistry. He was the first African-American chemist inducted into the National Academy of Sciences, and the second African-American scientist inducted from any field. Percy Julian was born in Montgomery, Alabama to Elizabeth Lena Adams and James Sumner Julian (1871–1951). James was a railway mail carrier for the United States Post Office, and his father was a slave. Elizabeth worked as a school teacher. Percy Julian grew up in the time of Jim Crow. Among his childhood memories was finding a lynched man hung from a tree while walking in the woods near his home. While it was generally unheard of for African Americans at the time to pursue an education beyond the 8th grade, Julian's parents steered all of their children toward higher education. Julian attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. The college accepted few African-American students. The segregated nature of the town forced social humiliations. Julian was not allowed to live in the college dormitories and first stayed in an off-campus boarding home, which refused to serve him meals. It took him days before Julian found an establishment where he could eat. He worked firing the furnace and doing other odd jobs in a fraternity house. In return, he was allowed to sleep in the attic and eat at the house. Julian graduated from DePauw in 1920 Phi Beta Kappa and valedictorian. By 1930 Julian's father had moved the entire family to Greencastle, Indiana so that all his children could attend college at DePauw. The father was still working as a railroad postal clerk. Julian wanted to obtain his doctorate in chemistry, but learned it would be difficult for an African American. After graduating from DePauw, Julian became a chemistry instructor at Fisk University. He then received an Austin Fellowship in Chemistry and went to Harvard University in 1923 for his M.S. Worried that white students would resent being taught by an African American, Harvard withdrew Julian's teaching assistantship. He was unable to complete his Ph.D. at Harvard. In 1929, while an instructor at Howard University, Julian received a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship to continue his graduate work at the University of Vienna, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1931. He studied under Ernst Späth and was considered an impressive student. In Europe, he found freedom from the racial prejudices that had nearly stifled him in the States. He freely participated in intellectual social gatherings, went to the opera and found greater acceptance among his peers. Julian was one of the first African Americans to receive a Ph.D. in chemistry, after St. Elmo Brady and Edward M. A. Chandler. During Julian's lifetime he earned more than 138 chemical patents for his work. Percy Julian was the second African American to get a masters degree in chemistry.[citation needed] He was the first African-American chemist inducted into the National Academy of Sciences, and the second African-American scientist inducted from any field. After returning from Vienna, Julian taught at Howard University for one year, where he met his future wife, Anna Roselle Johnson (Ph.D. in Sociology, 1937, University of Pennsylvania). They married on December 24, 1935 and had two children: Percy Lavon Julian, Jr. (1940-February 24, 2008), who became a prestigious civil rights lawyer in Madison, Wisconsin; and Faith Roselle Julian (1944- ), who still resides in their Oak Park home and often makes moving speeches about her father and his contributions to science. At Howard, Julian got involved in university politics and set off an embarrassing chain of events. After he goaded, at the University President's request, a white chemist named Jacob Shohan into resigning, Shohan retaliated by releasing to the local African-American newspaper the letters Julian had written to him from Vienna. The letters contained accounts of Julian's sex life, and criticism of individual Howard faculty members. Julian's laboratory assistant, Robert Thompson, also charged he had found his wife and Julian together in a sexual tryst. When Thompson was fired for filing a lawsuit a Alex Ellis - CEO of Tied To Greatness Alex O. Ellis "We are always in a process of refinement, especially in the school of life." -Alex O. What is a graduate degree - Nurse practitioner degree What Is A Graduate Degree
17 things on my 1st day of being 40. i'm pretty sure that i've been tagged about 80 bajillion times for this whole "16 Things," uh, thing, but i've held off, because i wanted to do my own take on it, on this, my day of days. sooooo, here we go: 1. i am a non-card-carrying member of Alpha Psi Omega, the National Honorary Theater Society (my card is currently stored away somewhere). this comes from spending four years in college many moons ago, where i earned a Bachelor of Science in Theater Performance. most people who ask what my degree was (especially at my current job, which couldn't be more unartistic if it tried) tend to say the same thing: "wow, really? i never would have guessed." me either, if i were that person. for so many years, i wanted to be an actress, practiced my Oscar speeches in front of the mirror, the usual doe-eyed thespian stuff. i tried for a couple of years after i graduated, i even had headshots and an agent, but nothing ever came of it. it's taken me all these many years to realize that i was not meant to be in front of the camera, but behind it. i love theater, movies, art, everything about the biz called show. i am a fan. but i am not an actress, and i am ok with that. that's not to say that i wouldn't be interested in dabbling again, especially commercials (Oil of Olay, call me!), or hell, even a love scene with Gerard Butler. after all, i'm not your typical girl-next-door. not in the slightest. i'm just sayin'... 2. no matter where, no matter what, i always come back to Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookies. they are the best. i would tell secrets for those cookies. dee-lish-us. 3. i am afraid to ask for help. i need to get over that, especially since i will need a lot of it in the upcoming months, what with getting my website together, finding a new job, figuring out how to be professional at this picture-taking stuff. i'm not asking right now, but i just thought i'd warn you. 4. i can't braid my hair. i've just never been able to figure it out. the braids always turn out looking i hired blind, coked-out monkeys to do the job. french braids? don't even go there. 5. purple-sequined Chucks, or a new fiddy lens? i can't decide. 6. i met Neil Young and his wife, Pegi, at a record store i used to work at in Palo Alto, CA. Pegi and i chatted for about ten minutes at the register, and out of the eighteen or so cds they bought, two of them were the double-disc blues/zydeco set i recommended. awesome. 7. i am afraid of the following things: death, heights, water, any poisonous insect, and Muzak. 8. i wish i were taller; then i'd be the right weight for my height. 9. i've never been able to take compliments very well. it took me a long time to accept graciously with a smile, and a "thank you." i still don't think i've gotten the hang of it. 10. i am not a great orator, never will be. in my mind, i know exactly what i want to say. when i actually try to say it, it comes fumbling out, sounding the complete opposite, and i'm sure i come off as a total idiot. let's just say my mouth wears a size 7 and a half. 11. my father took us to see "Jaws" when i was 6 years old. we laugh about it now, but back then, i didn't set foot in the bathtub for a week after that. i still put my feet up when i see it on tv. see "fear of water" up at #6. truth be told, i love telling that to everybody i know. :) 12. i really dislike my smile, and i'm not just saying that to fish for compliments (see #9). my teeth are crooked and unattractive, and it is the reason that i hardly ever bare my teeth when i smile in self-portraits, or shots with others. i've gone back and forth about getting braces these past couple of years, but chickened out. however, i think the next time the opportunity comes up where i can afford them, i will do it. i honestly think it'll do wonders for my self-esteem. 13. some of my goals this year include: becoming more technically proficient with my camera, to learn about lenses and other camera equipment in general, expand my knowledge of lighting, learn more about Photoshop and photo editing, and have a show or two. oh, yes, and start dating again. that would be good. 14. i have bunches of prints, little gifts, and cards for many of you out there who have been so kind to me, and sent me pressies and photos, and i *will* get those out to you, i promise. apologies in advance for the incredible lateness of all of them. 15. i was checked out a little by Fred Armisen of SNL (and a lot by the two male employees at the counter) last year, at a diner one late night in New York, while stef was in the bathroom. when stef and i left, he exited behind us, and i held the door as i was leaving, turned, smiled, and said "Hi." i found the whole thing way cool, but then again, it's the little things, you know? 16. whistling drives me absolutely bat shit insane. stop it, would ya? 17. one last thing.... i turn 40 today. happy birthday to me! James Is Happy To Be A Graduate!--Ashworth High School Program Yes, I successfully graduated from Ashworth High School!!!! I want to extend thanks to my parents for teaching me what I needed it to get where I am now and to the staff of Ashworth High School for the support and opportunity to complete my High School Education. In closing, I have earned my diploma and educational milestone through hard work, distance learning, and studying. I'm now in college at the University of North Alabama and earning my degree in Social Science Education.
