Koh Phangan was my favourite spot in Thailand, if you ever visit, leave the craziness of the full moon party behind and head for the northern beaches, nice accommodation that still feels a little undiscovered surrounded by thick jungle and secluded sandy coves.

This was the first photo I took of a Thai island. The night before we were brought to a bungalow in the middle of nowhere on Koh Phangan. We realized it was kind of remote and so changed to another accommodation. Anyway, the view was great!

Bedford Hotel building on the King's Road, Brighton
This photographic print shows the original Bedford Hotel building on the King's Road, Brighton. Originally opening in 1829, the building was designed by Thomas Cooper, one of the town commissioners. By the middle of the 1800s it had established itself as one of Brighton's most fashionable hotels. The author Charles Dickens was one of its most famous guests; his novel 'Dombey and Son' was completed while staying here.
The original building was destroyed by a fire in 1964. A new Bedford Hotel was erected on the site in 1967. The new development also featured a block of flats, Bedford Towers.
Bedfords (Formerly The Bedford Hotel)
The Bedford used to be a hotel with a bar but has now just become a bar. I had a drink there once or twice but can't remember what it was like.
***********************
There was a work dinner in town on this, the longest day of the year. On the way I took the opportunity to shoot the remaining unshot concentration of pubs in Bedford Place and London Road.
For some reason, in the days when I used to drink in town, I never got into the habit of visiting the Bedford Place pubs so I've never become familiar with them.

National Harbor
National Harbor is a new mixed-use planned community organized around an enormous Gaylord convention hotel. The main hotel is enormous, with an 18-story atrium, water features, and several restaurants. The rest of the site contains many other hotels, restaurants, and shopping, the majority of which appears to be fairly upscale. Along with the hotel and convention presence, it also seems that much of the development had been contingent on riding the housing/condo bubble. While assembling something of this magnitude is definitely impressive, I personally felt the environment had somewhat of a sterile Disney feel to it.

HOTEL DE VILLE (1991), Paris, France
HOTEL DE VILLE
The Hotel de Ville (French for "City Hall") in Paris, France, is the building housing the City of Paris's administration. Standing on the place de l'Hotel de Ville (formerly the place de Greve) in the city's IVe arrondissement, it has been the location of the municipality of Paris since 1357. It serves multiple functions, housing the local administration, the Mayor of Paris (since 1977), and also being a venue for large receptions.
HISTORY
In July 1357, Etienne Marcel, provost of the merchants (i.e. mayor) of Paris, bought the so-called maison aux piliers ("House of Pillars") in the name of the municipality on the gently sloping shingle beach which served as a river port for unloading wheat and wood and later merged into a square, the Place de Greve (French for "Square of the Strand"), a place where Parisians often gathered, particularly for public executions. Ever since 1357, the City of Paris's administration has been located on the same location where the Hotel de Ville stands today. Before 1357, the city administration was located in the so-called parloir aux bourgeois ("Parlour of Burgesses") near the Chatelet.
In 1533, King Francis I decided to endow the city with a city hall which would be worthy of Paris, then the largest city of Europe and Christendom. He appointed two architects: Italian Dominique de Cortone, nicknamed Boccador because of his red beard, and Frenchman Pierre Chambiges. The House of Pillars was torn down and Boccador, steeped in the spirit of the Renaissance, drew up the plans of a building which was at the same time tall, spacious, full of light and refined. Building work was not finished until 1628 during the reign of Louis XIII.
During the next two centuries, no changes were made to the edifice which was the stage for several famous events during the French Revolution (notably the murder of the last provost of the merchants Jacques de Flesselles by an angry crowd on 14 July 1789 and the coup of 9 Thermidor Year II when Robespierre was shot in the jaw and arrested in the Hotel de Ville with his followers). Eventually, in 1835, on the initiative of Rambuteau, prefet of the Seine departement, two wings were added to the main building and were linked to the facade by a gallery, to provide more space for the expanded city government.
During the Franco-Prussian War, the building played a key role in several political events. On 30 October 1870, revolutionaries broke into the building and captured the Government of National Defence, while making repeated demands for the establishment of a communard government. The existing government was rescued by soldiers who broke into the Hotel de Ville via an underground tunnel built in 1807, which still connects the Hotel de Ville with a nearby barracks. On 18 January 1871, crowds gathered outside the building to protest against speculated surrender to the Prussians, and were dispersed by soldiers firing from the building, who inflicted several casualties. The Paris Commune chose the Hotel de Ville as its headquarters, and as anti-Commune troops approached the building, Commune extremists set fire to the Hotel de Ville destroying almost all extant public records from the French Revolutionary period. The blaze gutted the building, leaving only a stone shell.
RECONSTRUCTION
Reconstruction of the hall lasted from 1873 through 1892. The reconstruction of the building was directed by architects Theodore Ballu and Edouard Deperthes following an architectural contest. Ballu also built the Church of La Trinite in the IXe arrondissement and the belfry of the town hall of the Ier arrondissement, opposite the Louvre's east facade. He also restored the Saint-Jacques Tower, a Gothic church tower in a square 150 metres to the west of the Hotel de Ville.
The architects rebuilt the interior of the Hotel de Ville within the stone shell that had survived the fire. While the rebuilt Hotel de Ville is, from the outside, a copy of the 16th century French Renaissance building that stood before 1871, the new interior was based on an entirely new design, with ceremonial rooms lavishly decorated in the 1880s style.

Pennsylvania 6-5000
The very emptiness of this basement area of the old Hotel Pennsylvania in New York almost startled me. I was merely passing through, but couldn't resist a quick trip downstairs to see what might be below. The Hotel Pennsylvania was built by E.M. Statler and is presently in danger of being demolished for an ugly and unnecessary office behemoth. The Vornado Realty Trust owns the premises and has made no secret of its plans to destroy this once great, if damaged, hotel.
Hotel Pennsylvania - 1931/2011
After a big restoration a few years ago, this hotel at the corner of Carrall and Hastings looks much like it did back in the day, including the new neon sign and rebuilt 'top hat' on the corner roof. All the surrounding buildings are the same from the old picture.

Kiddie Pool At Disney's Boardwalk Inn And Villas: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van Jun 5, 2010
First you pat the tummy of the elephant for good luck and then you head into the pool...
This is the kiddie pool at Boardwalk and the fellow getting his tummy patted is one of several elephants you see in the Luna Park Pool. The pool is named after the Coney Island amusement park in Brooklyn that featured elephant rides in the early 1900's.
The pool at Boardwalk has lots of amusement park theme elements--notice the bright primary colors. It also features a bar that resembles a carousel and an infamous clown slide...but those are other adventures for another day...
john
p.s. this pool is really shallow and the little boy in the foreground is fine...he's just playing a game with his little brother!

Leaping Horse Libations At Disney's Boardwalk Inn And Villas: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 10, 2010
Now, THAT'S a pool bar.
I think you have to agree that Leaping Horse Libations, at the main pool at Boardwalk, is probably Disney's most elabrately themed pool bar!
The main pool at Boardwalk is called Luna Park Pool and it is named after an amusement park at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. The imagineers obviously weren't shy in themeing Leaping Horse Libations to look like a carousel. It's not far off of the carousel in the Magic Kingdom...only this one serves a mean margarita!
Luna Park Pool is behind located in the Villas portion of the Boardwalk resort. As you enter the lobby, head to your left and go down a level...

Patong Beach on Phuket
This beach reminds me of beaches in California: it faces West, it is surrounded by mountains, and the trees lining the beach road for the most part aren't palms, but some kind of fir trees. In fact, head North on the road out of Patong Beach and you could be on California's Highway 101. We found Patong beach much less inhabited by farang than is Pattaya . . . bummer that Thai Oil's refinery isn't here . . .
Patong Beach
Patong Beach end of October 2006. Cold, rainy and cloudy. No jet skiing, no banana boating, no snorkling, no sun bathing, no swimming..... just cooold and dull. But two days after, everything was back in full swing :-)

Casa Monica Hotel St Augustine, Florida
.Casa Monica has been totally rebuilt and is a wonderful place to stay..if you can swing it...some of the best food in town also..There are wonderfuls shops to the street side on the left..with an art gallery in the building along with a nice coffee shop...It is right on the town square (to the left out of sight), right in front of the Flagler Museum (to the right.) Shops are within walking distance along with the nearby historical district...Built in the Spanish Renaissance style...Saint Augustine is the oldest city in the United States.
When Florida was being populated, this used to be the last stop of the railroads and this hotel along with another (across the street, which was bought and is now Flagler College) were very exotic places for the rich and famous of the day for wintering. Flagler eventually extended the railroad down through Florida to the Miami area.
I have taken some shots of these beautiful buildings at night without using HDR, and they are good, but WITH HDR it is a lot easier to control the lights and contrast..and therefore get a better picture. I can do some of the same things in Shadows/Highlights, but it is nice to have another tool (which I know can only be as good as the toolee!) As long as I take sharp pictures and don't move between shots, the HDRs are staying sharp..which was my main concern along with not creating halos, etc. You pretty much still have to go through your PPing routine with them though, after they have been blended.
A Generation on Eve of Election
(Politics Never Were the Answer) (James Watkins)
This generation is stuck on the bulwark,
Frozen in headlights gathering stones-
Indiscriminate sons of the morning,
Atrophied assets with merits unknown.
Set in the light of internal combustion,
Self deprivation, contiguous bones-
Crushed in the conflict
Of rising occasion,
Lost in the moment
The monument grows.
Dancing with moonlight,
Moonbeams in starlight,
Ridiculed remnants that rattle and roll-
Quixotically quoted in
Careless convention,
National parlance
Of future payrolls.
Pay for the privilege,
Pose for the prattle,
Pause for refreshment,
That causes the cure.
Simple deliverance in
Smokescreen obedience,
Rationale railways
That run on the ruins.
Come to the purpose in patriot persuasion,
Stand in the gap with righteous reward,
Fly in the face of cupcake convention,
Pulses of power that pull
At the thorns.
Hold fast in fear; don’t fall at the junction,
Waste away weather maps
Conjugal forms-
Failing at formats with frogs in the foyer,
Padded with passive, political porn.
Packed into parlors with pigs of persuasion,
Multiplied monsters fixed to the floor-
Pass on to poundings of crux congregations,
Critical mass for the petrified poor.
Crept in concealment configured in catacombs,
Built on the fragments of families forlorn-
Terrified teamsters with tales of their talisman,
Tickled and tortured, then swamped by the storm.
Fancy faced forecasts with fabricate filters,
Lies at the bottom where captives are shorn-
Files of the caveat castaway cheviots,
Horns of the altar now cut to the stone.
Sanctified delegates step to floor-
Out on the borders, go right for the snore.
Sniping at mystical magical merchandise,
Mopping up munchkins with heroes galore.
Gift of gab purposeful prophets in paradise,
Parabolic poetry prose-
Deft and defiant in damaged delusion,
Filled up with ideas but stuck in the door.
Pamplified pollsters perched on the pedestal,
Pale prognosticates barren and bored-
Doubters and doers and leaders and lovers,
Catch me the top of the hour has flown.
Dudley dead do-rights don’t come down a crashin’
Cackling crackers conducive to scorn,
Capped out and crapped out
In Wall Street enduros,
Boiled down to futures and factual whores.
Just enough knowledge to keep them from happiness,
Just enough money to keep them enthroned,
Just enough polish to keep each one sparkling,
Just enough selfishness keeps them alone.
