Dalton is a small inland country town on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia in Upper Lachlan Shire. Its claim to fame is that it is reputed to have the nation's highest rate of earthquakes and tremors.

The underlying rock strata of the region from Dalton to Lake George (40 km east) is geologically active, with the lake formed along a fault system running north-south. Water is believed by some to drain from Lake George and reappear in the Yass River, leading to speculation that the groundwater lubricates the geological activity along the faults.

Several amateur geologists in Dalton and the surrounding region have seismic recorders that automatically send data to Geosciences Australia.

A 5.5 magnitude Richter scale earthquake occurred on 1 January 1949 in the Dalton-Gunning region. It was felt in Canberra.

Dalton is north of the Hume Highway that joins Sydney and Melbourne, between Goulburn and Yass in southern New South Wales, 255 kilometres (158 mi) southwest of Sydney and 79 kilometres (49 mi) northwest of the national capital, Canberra. Nearby towns are Cullerin, Gundaroo, Gunning, Yass, and Murrumbateman.

The region is renowned for its sheep wool industry, notably for the Merino breed. The dry-land farming supports both summer and winter wheat, and some other cereal crops, but agriculture also extends to cattle production for meat.

Like many Australian towns, its economy and social life has fallen into some degree of lethargy, and this has begun to show. The wide streets are generally well maintained; it still has a viable hotel (pub) and several small shops and a petrol station, and the churches are maintained. However, there is a sense that the youth of the town leave for the bigger towns and cities, and that the vibrancy of Dalton's heyday of the early 20th century has gone.

There is a recent move to have bed and breakfast accommodation on farms to offer a "farm experience" to city dwellers.

Angel at Galong, NSW, Australia

An angel stands atop the grave of one of the Ryan family of Galong, in the south-western slopes of New South Wales, Australia. Edward 'Ned' Ryan was an emancipated convict who settled in the Galong area in the late 1820s, and carved out a large area of land and turned it into a replica of Clonoulty, his home county in Ireland. He grew prosperous, and gained a reputation for hospitality. He built a homestead and then a square castle-like structure beside it, called 'Galong Castle', and was himself referred to as the 'King of Galong'. A devout Irish Catholic, Ned Ryan established a cemetery for his family on the Galong property, which features many elaborate graves and statuary, some created by a well-known Goulburn sculptor, Rusconi.

Ned Ryan's son, John Nagle Ryan, willed his property to the Redemptorist Congregation who established St Clement's Monastery and Minor Seminary in 1918. By the time the seminary closed in 1975 it had educated some 2000 young men in the Catholic ministry. It is now a popular retreat and conference centre run by the Redemptorists and the Sisters of St Joseph, Goulburn, and continues to dispense good Australian country hospitality - and generous quantities of country-style food - to those who spend time there. 'Galong Castle', within the St Clement's complex, is now a museum that relates both to the story of the Ryan family and the site's history as a Catholic seminary.

Interet architectural : Edifie a partir de 1631 pour Jean de Choisy, conseiller du roi, ce chateau du XVIIe s est une des premieres realisations de l'architecte Francois Mansart. Jardins a la Francaise. Forme de cinq pavillons qui s'agencent selon une conception pyramidale, le chateau possede un appareil rarement rencontre de schiste et de calcaire. Situes de part et d'autre d'un jardin a la francaise, les communs accueillent le musee des ballons. Musee des ballons. Balleroy fait partie de l'un des premiers plans d'urbanisme en France qui inspira Versailles. Dans l'un ds communs du chateau fut cree le premier musee de Ballons en 1975 par Malcolm S. Forbes.

Francois Mansart, ne le 23 janvier 1598 a Paris, au faubourg Saint-Victor ou il est mort le 23 septembre 1666, est un architecte francais. Il est considere comme le principal precurseur de l’architecture classique en France.

Issu d’une famille originaire d’Italie[1], Mansart, fils d’Absalon Mansart, charpentier du roi, beneficie d’un apprentissage precoce aupres de Germain Gautier, sculpteur et architecte du roi , qui avait epouse sa s?ur. Il travaille ensuite avec son oncle a Toulouse. Sa premiere ?uvre parait avoir ete la restauration de l’hotel de Toulouse. Ses premiers ouvrages furent le portail des Feuillants qu’il eleva en 1623-24, a vingt-cinq ans, sur la facade de l’eglise des Feuillants a Paris, aujourd’hui detruit, travaux remarques qui lui valurent le « brevet d’architecte du Roi pour le service de ses batiments ».

En 1632, le commandeur de Sillery lui demanda les dessins de l’eglise du couvent de la Visitation des Filles-de-Sainte-Marie de la rue Saint-Antoine, dont saint Francois de Sales, eveque de Geneve, fut le fondateur. La superieure, Helene-Angelique L’Huillier, fit batir l’eglise du couvent sur le modele de Notre-Dame-de-la-Rotonde, a Rome. Mansart, charge des travaux, l’acheva en 1634 et elle prit le nom de Notre-Dame-des-Anges. Supprime en 1790, ce couvent devint bien national et, le 12 frimaire an XI, un arrete des consuls le conceda a la ville de Paris pour etre affecte a l’exercice du culte reforme sous le nom de temple du Marais.

En 1633, il commenca l’hotel Conti, dont la porte a ete gravee par Marot et l’hotel Mazarin, rue Richelieu (1633 a 1649). En 1634, il fut charge de l’agrandissement de l’hotel Carnavalet, dont il sureleva l’aile droite en appuyant le soubassement d’un ordre de pilastres ioniques accouples. En outre, il decora le premier etage de douze colonnes, exhaussa les fenetres et placa des mansardes au-dessus de celles-ci, du cote du jardin. Il remplaca aussi la rampe en bois sculpte de l’escalier par une rampe en fer. Quant a la facade, il ne la restaura qu’en 1661, tout en ayant soin de respecter les precieuses sculptures de Jean Goujon. En 1635, il commenca l’hotel de la Vrilliere, connu plus tard sous le nom d’hotel de Toulouse, grave par Marot ; profondement modifie par de nombreuses restaurations et additions, cet hotel, dont les travaux en avaient ete conduits par Jean Pastel, macon du roi, est occupe aujourd’hui par la Banque de France.

En 1635, Mansart fut charge par Gaston de France, duc d’Orleans d’elever, a son chateau de Blois, le grand et important batiment du fond de la cour, mais qui ne fut point acheve. En 1636, il commenca le portail de l’eglise des Minimes de la place Royale, dont il eleva seulement le premier ordre. A cette epoque, il recevait 1 200 livres de gages annuels, qui furent portes plus tard a 3 000 livres. En 1661, il recevait 150 livres d’honoraires comme architecte du duc d’Orleans. Il est certain qu’il dut recevoir des appointements de ce prince, depuis l’epoque ou il commenca a travailler pour lui. Vers 1640, il realisa l’eglise des Dames de Sainte-Marie, a Chaillot, aujourd’hui demolie. En 1641, la construction du chateau de Maisons, pres Saint-Germain-en-Laye, mit le sceau a sa reputation. L’annee suivante, il commenca pour le surintendant des finances Rene de Longueil, le chateau de Maisons, sans contredit son chef-d’?uvre, qui a ete grave par Marot et Israel Silvestre, mais a peine en avait-il eleve une aile, que, sans en avertir le proprietaire, il la demolit pour la refaire sur un autre plan. Cette instabilite fut cause qu’on ne le chargea pas de l’achevement du Louvre, pour lequel Colbert lui avait demande les plans de cet edifice ; Mansart en presenta au ministre plusieurs fort beaux, mais qui n’etaient que de simples croquis. Colbert le pressa de les arreter et de les mettre au net afin qu’il put les soumettre a l’approbation du roi. I love fresh and light tasting fare when it's late and I'm tired. I was going to order the "home made Tagliatelle with truffle, scampli and fresh Porcini pasta," but changed my mind and went for the fish course instead. If there was one course I fell in love with on the first half of my Northern Italy mini-tour, this was it. It was light yet hearty and satisfying. The flavours were simple, but not muted; refreshing, yet bursting with character. For a reasonable 32 euro (don't neglect the amuse, the ample bread basket, and the mignardise I was to receive - perhaps due to the tea I ordered), this course could easily feed two people.

An excellently pan fried butterflied sea bass filet (almost as wonderful as Charles' from Mistral in Seattle!) were placed on two soft pillows of pached egg white meringues that mimicked the seafood's briney flavour. But the surprising thing to these cloud like pedistals was the fact that they appeared to be poached and then their top surfaces lightly seared (or perhaps the tops were covered and slightly coloured by a hot plate or the hot fish?). The contrasting texture was delightful: springy, airy, chewy, dense yet bubbly. It was like a foam, with substance, filling, but not a filler. I was in love. The summer sauce appeared in the almost absent form of foam; similarly the spring bouquet was a handful of jullienned eggplant, zucchini, fennel, carrot and parsley. Either way, these latter two accompaniments were just that, and then some. Perfect, refreshing, delicious. I would order this course in a heartbeat. Actually, I would want to try more from Do Leoni's menu next time, if ever, I have the chance to visit Venice again... and then I would ask for a reprise of this course.

Not finding a table at either Antico Martini nor Harry's Bar, I decided to head back in the direction to my hotel to try a "local haunt" that my hotel concierge/service desk manager recommended to my American neighbours. But halfway towards the location the dark night and rather desserted streets made me turn back towards my hotel to search for anything remotely delicious. That's when I re-discovered Do Leoni, steps away from where I was staying. As I was passing by, I took a quick look at the menu that was posted, and another tourist was recounting his love for the place to his friend, saying that "this place has the best food. It's so good,..." but his friend had wandered off. It was a quick 2 second decision made by my tired self, and grumbling tummy. In the end it was the best find of all! And like I mentioned, literally just around the corner from my hotel!

Une conception de l'amenagement urbain base sur le prix de l'immobilier. Un cas d'ecole du processus de gentrification.
J'ai voulu rendre hommage a la beaute de ce batiment et du personnels qui le fait vivre depuis des siecles en privilegiant les couloirs vides, symbole de cet hopital qui se meurt.

In The South Dakota Badlands

Well yesterday could have gone better :(. Left home at 6am and arrived at our hotel in Medora ND 13 hours later only to find out our reservation had gone astray. To make matters worse there wasn't a vacant room to be had within 100 miles of the park. So it was either sleep in the truck or move on. We had planned to stay a week in Theodore Roosevelt NP and a week in Badlands NP. I called our hotel at the Badlands and was lucky enough to be able to extend our stay there for the entire two weeks. Then there was the five hour drive to Wall SD, we arrived at 1:30am our time which added up to 19 and half hours of driving and dicking around. Theodore Roosevelt NP will have to wait until another trip :(

Anyway I was out before dawn this morning but it was overcast so not much in the way of sunrise shots though i did get some shots a couple of hours later when it partially cleared. Here are a few quick edits from this morning's shoot.
