After Engineering Degree

Almost 30 years ago when Eshaq was in first grade, warring factions destroyed his school. Over the next five years, his parents and community members educated him to the best of their ability. By the time his family fled to Pakistan, he had learned enough to go into seventh grade. After he returned to Afghanistan, he finished high school in tents.
Eshaq successfully competed with 5,000 university applicants for one of 300 seats. However, several months into the program, he realized that he needed instruction that is more advanced. He gave up his seat to transfer to another university that had better science labs and taught courses in English. In four years, he graduated with an engineering degree.
Eshaq’s first engineering job was to help build a small clinic. That job led to building village roads. He soon began to work on major highway projects all over the country. He relished each challenge as an opportunity to grow.
A supervisor noticed that Eshaq was both meticulous in his work and a good teacher. He recommended him to the Kabul Central Laboratory operated by USAID’s Afghanistan Infrastructure Rehabilitation Program. As a senior lab manager there, Eshaq conducted an array of quality control tests on road materials and taught more than 100 university interns.
After seven years, Eng. Eshaq decided to set out on his own. “I understood that now is the time Afghans can start a business,” he explained. “We see the capability in ourselves. Before, we were not able to fulfill the requirements. Now, we can.” Prepared with the technical and managerial skills to be successful, he bought equipment, hired employees, and began to answer requests for proposals.
After winning his first contract, he decided to share his skills with the next generation of Afghan professionals. He recruited university interns to work and learn in his lab. Three of them have graduated and found jobs. Proud of the impact he has had on the students’ skills and employment eligibility, Eshaq has already filed papers to bring in a new group of interns.

Finally after four years of immense struggle, i got my degree!! well, to be honest, it wasn't a struggle at all...it was the best time of my life : D ..I cherish those times, so many wonderful experiences, so many new lessons learnt, new friends acquired....i miss those days, but life has to move on nevertheless : - )

The Music Man
In the mid-1990's, 9th Wonder was a DJ at the radio at North Carolina Central University while attending school there. He was doing production work for local artists with his keyboards. By his senior year, he was introduced to a relatively new music DAW production software called Fruity Loops (now FL Studio) by a friend who was also a producer. Around the same time, he met two younger schoolmates Phonte and Big Pooh, who were local emcees in the Durham area and joined to become the group known as Little Brother. He then began DJ'ing for them at shows and produced a number of their beats on underground records during the rest of the 1990's.
As an up-and-coming producer, he released a remix album of Nas' 2002 album God's Son entitled God's Stepson. This album began what is now a regular trend of remixing whole albums. 9th Wonder has a smooth and soulful production style that relies on samples from artists such as Al Green and Curtis Mayfield. He attributes the bass lines that he uses in production to DJ Premier, Pete Rock and J Dilla, while he claims to have learned "moans" from RZA. With the help of filmmaker Tee Smith and sound engineer Young Guru, 9th Wonder landed a coveted production credit on Jay Z's then highly-anticipated The Black Album. The producer continued to produce for Little Brother and many other Hiphop artists/groups, including Jean Grae, Skyzoo, and Murs. 9th Wonder has also produced for more widely known artists such as Destiny's Child, Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, De La Soul, Mos Def, Memphis Bleek, Buckshot from Black Moon, and more recently, artists such as The Game, Lloyd Banks, and Sean Price. Recently, 9th Wonder, along with Christopher "Play" Martin from the Hiphop group Kid-n-Play, were appointed Artist-In-Residence by the Chancellor of North Carolina Central University, and instruct a Hiphop history class in NCCU's Music Dept.
9th Wonder still resides in North Carolina. He has announced his dedication to the community in Durham, NC by joining P'Tones Records [www.ptonesrecords.com], giving students the opportunity to learn about the music industry and further their education by earning scholarships to NCCU. Professor Kawachi Clemons and founder (of P'Tones) Oren Rosenbaum will be opening their project January 2008, with 9th serving as spokesperson. He recently released his second solo album entitled The Dream Merchant Vol. 2. and The Formula.

Gene Simmons was born in Haifa, Israel in 1949, and is the only child of his mother, a German Nazi Concentration Camp survivor.
He has always attributed his ethics, morals and drive to his mother's notion's about life. "Every day above ground, is a good day," his mother is apt to say. Every day above ground, indeed.
He came to America at eight and a half years of age.
He graduated State University (NYSU) and City University (CUNY) and got a Bachelor of Education degree.
He taught sixth grade in Spanish Harlem in New York City.
He then became the Assistant to the Director of the Puerto Rican InterAgency Council, a government funded research and demonstration project.
He worked at Glamour and then at Vogue, as the assistant to the editor, Kate Lloyd.
Gene speaks a few languages: English, Hungarian, Hebrew, German and is getting better at Japanese every day. At present, he is becoming fascinated by Mandarin Chinese and has every intention of becoming fluent in it.
Gene Simmons has never been married.
He has had live in relationships with Cher and Diana Ross.
He has been happily unmarried for 25 years to Shannon Tweed, the mother of his two beautiful children(Nick and Sophie)

I left 88 degree sunny Los Angeles to arrive in 44 degree rainy Toronto. It is a very pretty city, though I'm wondering why it happens that my work trips up here are always in November and December...
I flew Air Canada from LAX to Toronto and it absolutely shocked me that they did not serve even a snack. There was food for purchase, but I still couldn't believe it. This was a 5-hour *international* flight without food. Oy! What is the jet set era coming to?! Either travel to Canada has now been downgraded to a domestic flight OR complaining about paying for airplane food is becoming the new complaining about airplane food.
One thing I certainly would *not* complain about was the seatback entertainment system in coach. You could choose from a bunch of movies, TV shows, and music channels. It was decent, and for a moment I almost thought I was in Business Class. Whenever I'm trying to get work done on a longish plane flight sitting some, my laptop battery always goes dead, and I can never find an AC outlet to recharge it. This ingenious aircraft had an AC outlet right next to the screen. (Although they didn't feed me, they fed my laptop battery, so I suppose that's something...)
Am I missing something, or are there never AC outlets anywhere to be found in the Coach seats on airplanes? Do tell me.

From its modest beginnings as a school to prepare home economists and manual art teachers for the children of the poor, the college affiliated with Columbia University in 1898, and went on to become the leading intellectual influence on the development of the American teaching profession. My painting teacher had this gallery setup in the halls, and I'm blown away by the rich hues and texture of encaustic painting.

Is human resources management a science or an art? As business people who are not a qualified human resources manager and with only limited familiarity, via the workplace, with people who are, we would be inclined to say, well, it can’t be a science, so it must be an art, mustn’t it?
After all, its subject matter is living, walking, talking human beings and the way they interact in the workplace and generally contribute to the productivity of the organizations for which they work. We would’ve thought that a couple of degrees in psychology or sociology would have been the appropriate qualifications for solemn folk with such impressive sounding job titles as ‘Human Resources Manager’ or ‘Human Resources Director’.
Now we find that while not completely wrong, (yes, ideally, you should have a degree in the above as a foundation), we’re not completely right either, having now had a read through of ‘Armstrong’s Handbook of Human Resource Management Practice’.
This is one impressive publication, now going into its eleventh edition, the first having been published in 1977. The author has obviously been toiling away for over three decades producing updated editions of the Handbook approximately every two to four years, ensuring that HR practitioners everywhere stay abreast of current trends in this continually evolving and increasingly complex discipline.
We both agree wholeheartedly with the quote the publishers Kogan Page have gleaned from the very authoritative THES (Times Higher Education Supplement) that this is ‘the most comprehensive of similar texts covering human resources…the definitive text in the field’… and ‘an excellent book.’
An HR Department between two covers is how the publishers describe it, and we have little doubt that they’re right. ‘If any book is a contender for one of the standard references of the HR profession, this is it,’ says ‘Personnel Today’, adding that ’it covers just about everything that might be considered broadly relevant to practicing HR.’
Written for learners as well as lecturers in undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes, including CIPD qualifications, the Handbook also functions on a practical day to day level as a complete practice manual for HR professionals.
Each chapter is systematically and logically laid out, as is the book as a whole. It is rare to find a management text book or reference book, especially in this area, that is thorough and instructive as well as accessible and easy to read, all at the same time, with excellent colour coded learning features throughout.

Curtiss 1A "Gulfhawk"

The Curtiss Hawk 1A Gulfhawk is a one-of-a-kind airplane built by the Curtiss Airplane & Motor Company, Garden City, Long Island and flown by Al Williams, a Pulitzer Trophy and Schneider Cup record setting pilot and former chief test pilot for the U.S. Navy, and famous aerobatic pilot. Williams called the Gulfhawk the finest aerobatic military ship ever built.
Department of Commerce records indicate that the original aircraft began life as Curtiss Hawk demonstrator NR636E, serial number 1, specially outfitted for long distance flight. It was Curtiss Navy F6C-4 with the split undercarrriage of the Army P-1 Hawk, a Conqueror engine and extra fuel tanks fitted to the side of the forward fuselage as in Curtiss Hellidvers. Initially the airplane had a tailskid rather than a tail wheel. In the interest of increasing control capability, the larger stabilizers and elevators from the P-1/F6C-1 Hawks were used, along with a substantial increase of the vertical fin and rudder chord.
After a crash, the aircraft was rebuilt with a Wright Cyclone engine and designated a Hawk 1-A with serial number NR982V. Williams took delivery of the airplane at Garden City in August 1930, soon after his retirement from the Navy. He had the aircraft painted with a Chinese red fuselage and struts and the wings and tail were finished in silver. At one point the main wheels also had a star on them. He replaced the engine with the Bliss (American built) English Bristol Jupiter 9 cylinder radial that developed 550 hp, an engine similar to the Pratt 7 Whitney Wasp used by the F6C-4. The engine was uncowled and the entire airplane was fabric covered.
Al Williams had a law degree, but he preferred flying. He started his civilian aviation career as a free-lance airshow pilot flying aerobatic routines that skirted the edges of the airplane's performance envelope. As a conclusion to his show, he would dive on a small shack and drop military practice bombs to detonate black powder charges. Williams later acknowledged his hidden agenda was to promote military aviation to the public during the inter-war years when aviation budgets were quite low. He performed to overflow crowds at the 1930 National Air Races in Chicago and in the Nationals in Cleveland in 1931 where his sponsor was SOHIO Oil.
In early 1931, Williams experienced engine failure at an airshow in Charlotte, North Carolina, during an inverted falling leaf maneuver and miraculously was able to recover sufficiently to pancake the airplane onto an empty embankment in the parking area. The airplane sustained so much damage that it required a complete rebuild that transformed it into its most famous configuration and scheme. The Bristol Jupiter engine was replaced with a nine-cylinder 700 hp Wright Cyclone radial engine and a smooth short-chord Townend ring cowl. The fuselage was rebuilt using the existing truss structure that was then covered over with the faired aluminum skin that is still on the present airplane. In 1933 he negotiated a deal with the Gulf Oil Company to start an aviation department with himself as manager. The aircraft was repainted with the now famous Gulfhawk orange, white and blue sunburst paint scheme. He flew the airplane on the show circuit under Gulf sponsorship through 1936 when he replaced it with the Grumman Gulfhawk II, also in NASM's collection. Williams also wrote a syndicated column for Scripps Howard newspapers, continually advocating the future of air power and the need for strong military air forces. He and his Curtiss airplane became the idol of youngsters and he co-founded an organization known as Junior Aviators to promote interest in aviation.
The aircraft disappeared from view until Frank Tallman received a tip from his brother, a stockbroker in New York City, that it was at Aviation Trade School in Manhattan. Tallman approached Williams about purchasing the aircraft and Williams agreed to let Tallman move it to temporary storage in his brother's barn in New Jersey before trucking it to Riverside, California. A four-year restoration project began to replace the engine, rudder, rudder pedals, elevators, instruments, and throttle quadrant. Most of the fabric covering was gone and the fuselage was so heavily dented that almost all of the skin panels had to be replaced. A surplus SNJ/AT-6 trainer was used to provide many of the missing items including its 600 hp Pratt & Whitney Wasp engine and the controllable pitch Hamilton Standard propeller. The present day long-chord bump cowling was also installed at that time.
Frank Tallman test flew the restored Gulfhawk in 1962 and used it in airshows for many years. Interestingly, the FAA inspector who signed off on a repair in July 1962 was another famous movie pilot, Art Scholl. When not flying, the plane was exhibited in the Tallman
Stephens-Prier House
Historic Richmond Town, Staten Island
This two-and-one-half-story, five-bay, clapboard-covered house is the most impressive mid-nineteenth-century residence surviving in Richmondtown, the historic governmental center of Staten Island. Built around 1857 for Daniel Lake Stephens, a prosperous "gentleman," the house is located on the largest residential building lot in the village of Richmondtown and has frontages on Richmond Road, Center Street, and St. Patrick's Place. Symmetrical in design, the house has identical facades on Center Street and Richmond Road.
Its transitional design incorporates Greek Revival and Italianate elements and features projecting columned porches and molded entrance surrounds with narrow sidelights and transoms. Large tripartite windows emphasize the center bay at the second story and all the windows have decorative surrounds. The building is capped by a continuous bracketed cornice and a distinctive cross-gabled roof with shallow pediments pierced by lunette windows.
After Daniel Lake Stephens' death in 1866, the house was occupied by several members of the Stephens family, notably Judge Stephen D. Stephens, Jr., a successful lawyer who served as the Richmond County Judge and Surrogate for three decades. In 1886 it was acquired by James E. Prier, a butcher. The Prier family owned the house until 1926 and again between 1931 and 1946. Since 1991, the house has been owned by the City of New York and now houses the administrative offices of Historic Richmond Town.
The Development of Richmondtown'
Richmond County, encompassing all of Staten Island, was established in 1683 as one of the twelve original counties of New York, with Stony Brook, now Egbertville, its official county seat. Previously, the residents of Staten Island had relied on the Court of Sessions at Gravesend, Brooklyn, for the administration of laws, while the center of political activity on the island was at Oude Dorp, near the present South Beach.
In 1711, the county government built a prison in the tiny village of Coccles Town. This was considered a superior location for conducting governmental business due to its location at the island's geographical center, near the converging of roads leading to all parts of the island and at the head of the navigable Fresh Kills. In 1729, Coccles Town was officially chosen to be the new county seat and was renamed Richmondtown. A new county court house was constructed there that year.
British troops occupied Richmondtown during the Revolutionary War, establishing quarters in many of the village's buildings, burning the court house and other buildings upon their departure. Little development occurred during the next thirty years; however, a second county courthouse was constructed on Arthur Kill Road in 1793.
Richmondtown began to grow around 1800 and was incorporated as a village within the Town of Southfield in 1823. By 1828 the First County Clerk's and Surrogate's Office was constructed to the east of the jail. The hotel, Richmond County Hall, was built around 1829 and soon became a popular gathering place for political and social events. The town's first public school opened about 1830.
Sensing the development potential of the town, Henry I. Seaman, a New York merchant who was secretary of the company that operated the plank road (later Richmond Avenue), purchased ninety acres of farmland to the east of the town center in 1836. Seaman had the land laid out into two new streets, Center Street and Court Place, and 25' by 100' building lots.
A large plot on Center Street opposite Court Place was set aside for the construction of a new courthouse (the Third County Courthouse, now the Historic Richmond Town Visitors Center, built 1837, a designated New York City Landmark). Seaman also built several houses, known as "Seaman Cottages," and sold two corner lots to Austin Burke and Stephen D. Stephens, Sr., a cousin of Daniel Lake Stephens, who constructed
their own residences
. Due to the financial panic of 1837 Seaman was forced to sell his Richmondtown property, which eventually passed to Harmon Cropsey in 1854.4 During the 1840s, the village continued to expand, in part because of the construction of a new stone bridge over Fresh Kills Creek at the junction of Richmond Road and Arthur Kills Road.
The Washington Hotel was also built around 1840, on a site just north of the stone bridge, and around 1845 Isaac Marsh began construction of a carriage manufactory opposite the hotel. The Second County Clerk's and Surrogate's Office and a jail were constructed in 1848 and 1860, respectively. By the mid-nineteenth century, Richmondtown's position as the political and social center of the island was secure. The Stephens-Prier House, the Parsonage (1855) and the Edwards-Barton House (1869) are the most significant residential survivors of this expansive and prosperous period of the village's development.

Michael Jeffrey Jordan.
Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born in Brookyln, New York on February 17, 1963. He was the fourth of five children born to James and Deloris. James Jordan was a mechanic and Deloris Jordan was a bank teller. Soon after Michael's birth, James and Deloris felt that the streets of Brooklyn were unsafe to raise a family, so they moved the family to Wilmington, North Carolina.
As a youngster, Michael immediately became interested in sports. However, it was baseball not basketball that was his first love. He would play catch in the yard with his father, who loved baseball. He soon started to play basketball to try and follow in the footsteps of his older brother, Larry, whom he idolized growing up.
At Laney High School, as a sophomore, he decided to try out for the varsity team but was cut because he was raw and undersized. The following summer, he grew four inches and practiced tirelessly. The hard work paid off as he averaged 25 points per game in his last two years and was selected to the McDonald's All-American Team as a senior.
Following high school, he earned a basketball scholarship from North Carolina University where he would play under legendary coach Dean Smith. In his first year, he was named ACC Freshman of the Year. He would help lead the Tarheels to the 1982 NCAA Championship, making the game-winning shot.
After winning the Naismith College Player of the Year award in 1984, Jordan decided to leave North Carolina to enter the NBA draft. Although he decided to leave college early, he would later return to the university in 1986 to complete his degree in geography.
In the 1984 NBA draft, he was selected with the third overall pick by the Chicago Bulls. As a rookie for the Bulls, he made an immediate impact, averaging an amazing 28.2 points a game, including six games where he scored 40+ points. He was selected to the NBA All-Star Game and named Rookie of the Year. This would just be the beginning of a career filled with awards and accolades. In the upcoming years, he would go on to win five regular season MVP awards, six NBA championships, six NBA finals MVP awards, three All-Star game MVP awards, and a defensive player of the year award.
In 1993, tragedy struck Jordan's seemingly perfect life. On July 23, 1993, his father, James, was murdered off Interstate 95 in North Carolina. Two locals had robbed him, shot him in the chest and threw his body in a swamp.
Three months later on October 6, 1993, following a run of three consecutive NBA championships, Jordan announced his retirement from basketball citing that "he no longer had the desire to play." Now "retired" at age 33, it was uncertain what Jordan would do next. Would he take a year off out of the public eye to grieve and then come back to the Bulls? Would he go out and look for a white collar job in the field of geography, his college major? Or would he take up a completely different hobby like golf?
In early 1994, Jordan decided to take up a new hobby alright. However, it wasn't golf. It was baseball. Despite not playing baseball since high school some 13 years ago, he signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox in 1994. He played one unspectacular season for the Double-A Birmingham Barons.
On March 18, 1995, Jordan, a man of few words since his retirement, sent two important words to media sources everywhere: "I'm Back". He celebrated his return to the NBA by doing what he always did best: winning. Although the Bulls would lose in the playoffs to the Orlando Magic, it was obvious that Jordan was still the same superstar player. He would go on to lead the Bulls to three more consecutive NBA championships and etch his place in the history as the "NBA's greatest player of all-time".
On January 13, 1999, Jordan re-announced his retirement, saying that "he was 99.9 percent sure that he would never play again". Soon after, Jordan became part owner of the Washington Wizards.
Near the start of the 2001-02 season, there were hints that Jordan may try another comeback to the NBA. On September 25, 2001, Jordan confirmed those rumors, announcing that he would once again return to the NBA as a member of the Wizards. His two seasons in Washington were mediocre at best. His statistics were solid and he showed some flashes of his old self but he could not lead the Wizards to the playoffs and missed several games due to injury. He retired for good following the 2002-03 season and was subsequently dismissed as president of the Washington Wizards.
In June 2006, he became part owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. Later that year, he filed for divorce from Juanita, his wife of 17 years. They have three children together.

Kish Island
Persian Gulf, South of Iran
Kish Island has a unique situation in the strategic Persian Gulf region among tens of large and small islands. This island is so beautiful and attractive that it has become known as the Pearl of the Persian Gulf since ancient times.
Its calm coasts are covered with coral sands that shine in the sunlight, creating a unique and fascinating sight. The clear coastal waters allow one to view several meters deep into the sea and watch the beautiful movement of the fish. Diverse plants and native trees, as well as a pleasant climate seven months a year are among the outstanding characteristics of the island.
The island has attracted many tourists, travelers and writers throughout history due to these very characteristics. Among those who have written in praise of this island are Niarkhous, the Greek navy commander who traveled to Kish in 225 B.C., and wrote about its beautiful palm fields, Marco Polo, Ibn Batuta and Hamdullah Mostofi, as well as Ms. Fatemeh Al Ali the contemporary Kuwaiti writer who traveled to Kish in February 2002 and compared the island to a “gem on a king’s crown”.
Geography
Kish is lies between the 53 degrees and 53 minutes ,to 54 degrees and 4 minutes of the eastern longitude of the Greenwich Meridian, and 26 degrees and 29 minutes, and 26 degrees and 35 minutes of the northern latitude.
With an area of 90,547 square kilometers, the island is located only 18 km off the southern coast of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This beautiful oval-shaped island is 15 km long and seven km wide.

The distance from Kish to Tehran is 1052 km by air and 1600 km by land. Kish is at a distance of 1200 km from Isfahan, Iran’s historic and tourist destination city which attracts thousands of international visitors each year.
Topography
Kish is an almost flat island with an average altitude of 22 meters above the sea level. The highest region of the island (in the east) is 45 meters above the sea level. The island has shallow fissures formed as a result of erosion by heavy winter showers.
Climate
Temperature
Kish has a warm and humid climate with an average temperature of 30 degrees Celsius. The weather is temperate and pleasant in fall, winter and two months into the spring.
Humidity
The humidity is high in the majority of the months of the year. The humid season begins in mid April and continues for nine months.
Rain
Kish receives little and varying rainfall like in other parts of the Persian Gulf. The average annual rainfall in the island is 170 mm, 82 % of which falls in winter, 10 % in fall and the rest in spring and summer. The rain falls in the form of strong drizzle in spring and summer, and in small continuous drops in winter.
People
The native people of Kish are a combination of Iranians and Arab- Iranians of the country’s southern provinces, who had migrated to the island during its ancient times of prosperity. Thus they speak Farsi and Arabic. The complexion of the native people is dark and their physical characteristics are similar to those of the natives of the southern Iran. The majority of people are Sunni or Shiite Muslims who have established a strong link with each other throughout history.
Based on the census carried out in 2001, Kish has a population of 16501 comprising 4454 households. The increase in population is the result of the migration of Iranians from all parts of the country who come to work or invest in Kish. This has created considerable job opportunities and encouraged more migration to the island.
According to the programs envisaged for the Comprehensive Development Plan of Kish, in terms of urban infrastructure, public facilities and local resources, the island will be capable of providing for an estimated population of 200,000.
The island has a youthful population. Around 49.7% of the population is in the 25-64 age group, economically classified as active. The current population structure is a reflection of the inflow of job-seekers. With the ongoing development projects coming to fruition, the population structure is expected to normalize, approaching the patterns in other regions of the country.

LeBrun of Napoleon LeBrun & Sons, is a major and memorable evocation of the world-famous campanile in Venice's Saint Mark's Square. Built in 1907-09, the Metropolitan Life tower was for a time, the tallest building in the world. It is also the final and crowning work of a firm, father and sons, whose combined production spanned almost seventy years of American architecture.
The tower was extensively renovated (1960-64) by Lloyd Morgan & Eugene V. Meroni, Architects, successors to Leonard Schultze & Associates, who retained the tower's major features — monumental clock faces, setback arcade, pyramidal spire, cupola, chime and lantern — as well as its original entasis. The tower's site, opposite historic Madison Square Park at 24th Street, is one of the finest settings in the city. For the past eighty years the tower has been both a significant silhouette on the Manhattan skyline and a corporate symbol; the lantern at its top has been called "The light that never fails."
Madison Square Park - a brief history
Few buildings in New York enjoy the spacious and verdant setting Madison Square Park provides the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company home office complex and tower. The park itself had been included by the Street Commissioners in their 1811 Map of Manhattan nearly 180 years ago. Then the park was a reserve of almost 239 acres; it was not pared down to its present seven acres until 1844. Even as the park's size diminished, its historical significance increased; decades before the architecture of commerce came to dominate its borders, Madison Square possessed a rich civic, military, social and cultural history.
With the onset of the War of 1812, President James Madison mobilized troops and the site, a temporary home to upstate volunteers, became "Camp Madison," a likely source for the square's name. Today only commemorative monuments remain, echos of American military victories. The Fifth Avenue Hotel, a Republican Party stronghold, opened in 1858 and the park opposite became a pantheon of the party's most revered public servants from New York; with bronze statues of Secretary William H. Seward, Senator Roscoe Conkling, and President Chester A. Arthur.2 To the east, Madison Avenue, insulated by the park, became a fashionable residential enclave.
On the corner of 24th Street was the Madison Square Presbyterian Church (1854). From its pulpit the Reverend Dr. Charles H. Parkhurst marshaled the moral indignation that ended Boss Tweed's domination of municipal government.
In the 1880s and 1890s the Madison Square area became a theatrical center. Steele McKay built the Madison Square Theatre in 1880 and the Lyceum Theatre in 1885. In 1890 McKim, Mead & White's famous Madison Square Garden (demolished in 1924) opened at the northeast corner of Madison and East 26th Street on the site where P.T. Barnum formerly had his Monster Classical & Geological Hippodrome, and Gilmore's Garden had sheltered boxing demonstrations and the annual National Horseshow.
In the same year Joseph F. Knapp, the president of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, initiated the first of many property acquisitions the company would make on Madison Square when the houses on the Square's east side were purchased. With the exception of Dr. Parkhurst's church, the whole block front was demolished to build the company's new headquarters, an eleven-story office building faced with Tuckahoe marble, designed by Napoleon LeBrun & Sons. Considered in retrospect, it was the entertainment industry's encroachment that prompted residents to move further uptown, but it was the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company's new and solid presence which re-stabilized Madison Square's eastern border. In 1896 the State of New York erected the marble courthouse for the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court (James Brown Lord, architect), a designated New York City Landmark, on the northeast corner of Madison and 25th Street. Knapp's vision of the square prepared the site for the next chapter in its history, the growth of corporate giants.
History of Metropolitan Life
Metropolitan Life began as the National Union Life & Limb Insurance Company in 1863, but was split into two separate companies, the National Life Insurance Company and the National Travellers Insurance Company, in 1866. In 1868 the company's charter and its name were changed to Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.4 At this time the life insurance industry in this country was already dominated by several well-established companies. The agency system was well-developed and the principal policy plans of today — straight life, endowment, annuity and term insurance — were already in use.

We have opportunities for volunteers to assist with teaching at preschool, primary, and secondary levels. There may also be opportunities to teach at the IDP camps.

It is the goal of Kenyan children to get an education so they have the skills to overcome poverty and advance towards a future where their voice is heard. The Kenyan education system aims to achieve the goal of quality education for all. Since the late 1980s the education system has been modeled on what is called 8.4.4. This means 8 years of primary school, 4 years of high school and 4 years of university/higher education. This system is designed to give students recognized levels of education. It has helped to reduce drop out rates and has given those who will not attend university/higher education a legitimate qualification: the Kenya Certification of Primary Education and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.
Following a promise made in 1963 the Kenyan government made primary education free in government schools in 2003. Since then enrolment rates have skyrocketed and schools have been left unable to cope. Overcrowding is rampant and there are not enough trained teachers to fulfill all the positions needed. As a result, children are not getting the required attention and grades are slipping. Consequently government schools have capped their enrolment; this has lead to the rise of community run schools (sometimes referred to as harambee schools) where teachers do not need to be qualified or skilled. Today community schools account for about 75% of primary schools in Kenya.
Strategies to achieve basic, quality education for all in Kenya are not succeeding. It is estimated that only 24 percent of Kenya’s children advance to secondary school. While only about 2% attend university and other higher education institutions.
The Kenyan education system is plagued by a shortage of skilled teachers providing quality education. Volunteers have an opportunity to help change this by giving their knowledge and skills to classroom teaching and sharing skills with local staff.
Volunteers in the teaching program are placed in community run schools and children’s centres and have the opportunity to teach preschool, primary and secondary level students. For preschool level, volunteers can teach basic reading, words and counting, as well as colours and shapes. A Responsible Approach to Health Care
Once upon a time, in land far away (but closer than you think) the inhabitants of the planet utilize Science and Nature in the complete healing of the human mind : body : spirit. In those days, wisdom about nature was shared freely as there was an abundance of everything imaginable. These same people may or may not have degrees in mathematics, science or medicine – but they listened to the elders of the planet who came before. They listened with “all” divine senses and were able to comprehend the abundance of wisdom and possibilities. They realized they could have a life full of bliss and blessings if they were willing to put effort into the various aspects of their “life.” This was a brave people, for they took responsibility and applied the knowledge they had for healing and connecting with their spiritual side. They were connected to the earth and thankful for such bounty, diversity and beauty!
This month I want you to pretend you are living in that fairy tale and imagine what your life would be like if you discovered the power within to become pro-active in creating change in life, especially with your health care. Without a doubt, there are days that I have imbalances as I ignore the needs of my lower chakras. It’s not intentional; because I love everything about being active, especially when in nature. I also feel driven to learn as fast as I can about the upper chakras as the knowledge resonates truth within me. I could spend every waking moment creating, writing, learning, exploring aspects of healing my own mind / body / spirit within the confines of this flat screen monitor. However, the body requires maintenance and that means I have to get up, out and do things to keep the physical body in working order. For me, teaching forces me to stay in constant connection with the need to maintain a body that is flexible and healthy.
While I do believe in corporate responsibility and have written letters to the American Cancer Society requesting they take the first step in creating change in the medical industry through changing their focus to PREVENTION not Treatment. Change is a slow process, but our local community has started to include several fundraisers that utilize nature and physical activity. More and more people are stepping up and taking responsibility for their life and health care. Education and Application. The power is in your hands – what will you do with your life now?

Some blue for Monday blues.
I have had a lot on my mind lately. Almost to the point where I'm unable to get anyhing done because of overload. I'm re-evaluating my life, my priorities, I see things I have thought certain and strong crumble.
I'm supposed to start baking for my cousins matriculation exam party next week, I'm also supposed to take her matriculation exam pictures. And I so gladly do. But right now I feel that everything is just slipping out of my hands.
Especially now, in these times of exams, of joyful new students wearing their student hats. White and pure.
And I remember when I stood there, happy, awaiting the next step in my life. With the diplomas in my hand, with my white hat on my head. Celebrated by family and friends. Free.
I was supposed to do great things, achieve so much. And I feel I have let that young me down. Graduating as the top of my school with a lot of pressure and expectations, from friends, teachers, and most of all from myself.
Where I am now? Have I done anything of significance? Have I used any of the abilities I possess?
It's almost ten years ago. What have I done with these years? What could I have done? Where could I be, if I just had continued to work, to achieve, walk the path I knew how to walk? Studying, reading, writing, researching, gaining knowledge. Instead I went another way. A way that brought me where I am today. A good place, yes, but...
Still those thoughts haunt me. What if. Still those shackles laid upon me during the school times rattle and ring. I should be somewhere else, doing something more... significant. Which would be what? And what is significant anyway? What is significant to me?
The hard part is to be able to recognise what I want, not what I'm supposed to want. I still struggle, hoping to find peace some day.
Being an adult isn't that easy, is it. Finding ones way, ones path among all the possible ones.
Add to this, it's autumn weather outside, storming, raining. +6'C. A fabulous blue Monday indeed.
