I am pleased and grateful to announce that our little buddy, Mr. Cream is finally able to walk around all by himself! He hasn’t regained all of his strength in his back legs and is still favoring his left leg a bit but he gets around well enough to experience independence again. He can even climb up and down the masterfully crafted pillow ramp next to our bed. He does much better on the carpeted areas but has been doing better on the linoleum as each day passes. He seems happy and contented with what is. Miss Moon, his love interest, has decided to see aside whatever issues she had toward him since the accident and is once again giving him kisses and love again. I know that helps his spirits tremendously. We have stopped both of his Lymphoma medications and are now treating all of his issues with Homeopathy, Herbal remedies, supplements and healing light energy. He has put on quite a bit of weight, his coat is full and soft again and he once again has the full face he had when he was still a young man. Again, I want to thank all of you who sent prayers and healing energy to us. I know that it took a lot to create this miracle for my sweet Boy. xoxo
Caty Has Hope
[15:43] Hope Naxos shoves open the heavy door, completely unaware of its weight. She doesn't enter with her usual care, letting the door slam behind her as loud as it may as she darts forward toward the altar. Her hair hangs limply around her face in damp curls, and everything about her seems wild, manic. She doesn't notice Caty off to the side as she passes, stumbling a few times as her boots catch on the carpet before she reaches the end of the line of pews and sinks to her knees.
[15:44] Caty Weezles had just started blowing out a few of the candles. Her small hand reached the lighting stick, dipping it into the candle and you would hear a small voice say, "God, this is for my mommy. I miss her and if you can tell her I miss her I'd like that lots." And then she stopped hearing the door open and shut. Turning to see who entered her own sanctuary, the stick still afire. "Miss Hope?"

Sweet Bela, who I met a few weeks ago. She's an Australian Shepherd / Border collie cross and an elderly lady who is losing control of her back legs. Despite the fact that she couldn't really walk much and needed to be carried most places, she was the sweetest big black furball.
Australian Oddball Blanket
There has been an oddball project going on in Australia as well, and their "rug" as they call it is looking BEAUTIFUL! I just love the alternating colors of garter stitch they are putting between each section. So pretty!

Lens Advice
I'm looking for an upgrade to the 350d kit lens, I'm torn between the 50mm f1.4 and the 70/300 f4/f5.6 IS USM, any advice or thoughts welcome.
I do like to shoot low light, but I also like the idea of picking shots out with the zoom so I'm kind of 50/50, more experienced advice is always welcome and needfully sought.

New apartment
Changed the original photo of a bundle of keys to this one, a shot of the front windows, after some good advice on security. These windows are basically why we bought this apartment. The whole span is about 18'/5.5m. Those shelves below the window are going away, as is the carpet. The floors are solid maple underneath. All the furniture is from the previous owner. This photo was taken the first day we saw the apartment. That's our fabulous real estate agent in the chair.

De-potting my new MAC shadows
I bought my first MAC eyeshadow palette today! I only have five MAC shadows (three of which I bought today) but I know I'm going to end up buying a bunch more eventually.
Since 4/5 of my shadows are in pots I spent this evening de-potting my shadows.

The houseboats used for cruising on the tranquil backwaters of Kerala India, are innovative adaptations of the traditional cargo carriers along the network of inland water navigation routes in the western coastal lowlands of the state, especially in southern Kerala. Such cargo crafts made of local tropical woods like jack tree, teak and coconut fiber ropes, were made in different sizes and capacities for carrying loads. There were skilled carpenters in Kerala, who made such country crafts using local materials. Different types of watercrafts were made for different uses. The famous snake boats were for military / army logistics to quickly transport soldiers and materials along and across wide and long waterways during the early and medieval centuries.
Usually houseboats are defined as places to live in on rivers or estuaries or lakes. Families without regular houses, used to live permanently in the houseboats. But in Kerala, floating houses were not common. The present-day houseboats are meant to take tourists on sightseeing tours in the extensive backwaters of Kerala. The natural beauty and scenery of the backwaters can be enjoyed by cruising on the houseboats comfortably.
Kerala backwaters, as a whole, form an intricate network of lagoons, lakes, canals, estuaries, and rivers that drain into the Arabian Sea. Over 900 km of this labyrinthine water world is navigable. Boating along the backwaters offers spectacular views and vistas of Kerala’s pristine natural beauty. God’s Own Country!!
Coconut palms, the arboreal symbol of Kerala landscape, fringe the backwaters framing the blue tropical sky during daytime and a starry twinkling firmament during evenings. There are diverse sceneries along the backwaters crisscrossing the coastal areas.
The largest backwaters stretch is the Vemband lake, which sprawls out into the three districts of Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Kottayam and has an area of 205 sq km. It opens out into the Arabian Sea at the Cochin harbour. The islands of Cochin are situated at the meeting place of the lake and the sea.
Kettuvalloms or Houseboats (Riceboats) are country boats that were used in the early days for the transport of goods from the isolated interior villages to the towns. With the advent of roads, bridges and ferry services, gradually the Kettuvalloms went off the scene. Now these kettuvalloms are back again as a major tourist attraction. A ride on a Kettuvallom is a fabulous way to explore the fascinating beauty of the backwaters.

The materials that go into the making are all local and Eco friendly bamboo poles, coconut fiber ropes, bamboo mats, coir carpets etc. The house boats have fully furnished single and double rooms with sundeck, private balcony with comfortable chairs, kitchen and toilet with WC. In addition there is also separate rest room for the crew. Traditional lanterns are used as lights. The crew includes a chef and two oarsmen. The cuisine is traditional Kerala flavour with the local specialities; delicious fish and prawns. There are single bedroom houseboats for two people and two bedroom houseboats for four people.

I'll be home for Christmas, 100 years later than I thought
This was taken for Active Assignment Weekly for the week of December 21-28: Copycat. The assignment involved finding an Explore picture that inspired you and taking a similar picture.
My personal aesthetic isn't at all like most of the pictures of women my age on Explore, so I took a photo that was meant to look like it was set in the 50's or 60's and moved the concept back about 60 years. The photo I used for inspiration can be found in the comments.
I'm wearing a 90's biking/hunting divided skirt that goes down to just above my ankle and is very full. I've pulled it up and wrapped it around my legs much like the source image did with hers. I'm also wearing spats that I constructed, although by that point they were falling down a bit (they fit somewhat better before I lost 30 pounds). The carpet bag is also a reproduction, but the couch is a real antique (like her suitcase was) which is estimated as coming from the 1840's or 50's based on it's style.
I own a tripod, but not a timer, so my husband kindly helped me take the actual photo, with a lot of direction and after a lot of setup. I did some post processing to modify the levels in the image (specifically to blow out some of the lighter areas to make it look like an old photo) and to add the sepia tone.

Mosque, Mazar Imam Jafar Sadiq 01, Niya / Minfeng County, Xinjiang, China
The mosque is not the shrine; it is at the shrine complex. The mosque is typical for Xinjiang: wooden, with carved columns, with a porch for outdoor prayer, an inside area for prayer in cooler times, with green indoor-outdoor carpet. The unusual aspect of this site is the pilgrim path and tomb on the hill to the west of the mosque. The tatters may be the remnant of an old poster.
Mazar Imam Jafar Sadiq is said to be the "Mecca of Turkestan", with thousands of pilgrims visiting each fall. Mazar is the Uyghur word for shrine or holy place. The site is some 40 km south of the ancient ruins of Niya, rediscovered by M. Aurel Stein in 1901.
The shrine site is coping with increased desertification. Ancient Niya was abandoned in the 4th century due to desert encroachment as well as political instability. The Niya River once extended beyond ancient Niya to an older stone age site tens of kilometers further north, but reached only a few kilometers past the shrine in Stein's time, and today does not even reach the village of Kapakaskan, 5km south, which now relies on well water.
The old doormat
This is what was in front of my door when I moved into my current apartment in May 2005 -- and stayed there until now (except when it was windy, in which case I'd sometimes find it as many as three doors down the walkway). I've come to realize that it's not so much a doormat as it is a carpet remnant, of a sad indoor/outdoor carpet pattern.

North Hollywood Red Line station skylight
The North Hollywood Red Line station has some natural sunlight thanks to a skylight brightening the mezzanine.
The bright colors, as the station artist envisioned, are an homage to the citrus-growing history of the San Fernando Valley.

I was driving home from shooting the sunset on the Niagara River.
BTW
I was escorted out of a place I have shot sunsets numerous times by town of Tonawanda employees ,
who said that I would be subject to arrest if I showed up at the boatlaunch docks with my camera again.
They claim I was violating Homeland Security laws by photographing the sunset from the dockside parking lot.
