first flowers!
I went out on Saturday with the very unrealistic goal of finding something blooming after the abnormally warm weather we had most of last week. My thought was I'd find some Siberian squill, or maybe crocus or snowdrops... but I really didn't expect to find anything. I completely forgot about the witch-hazel. I know this particular one blooms early, but I'd totally forgotten about them until I came across them today, unfurling their petals like party favors, as if celebrating the February sunshine. They are the earliest flowering shrub in my region; they do open in the warmer days of January and February, and remain blooming through April.
flowers of the winter
I find flowers and plants even more fun to photograph in the cold of the winter than when they are in the summer bloom. This one is put against the setting winter sun for more interesting background
