Bosnia & Herzegovina: Sarajevo - The Sarajevo Haggadah The Sarajevo Haggadah is an illuminated manuscript that contains the illustrated traditional text of the Passover Haggadah which accompanies the Passover Seder. It is one of the oldest Sephardic Haggadahs in the world, originating in Barcelona around 1350. The Haggadah is presently owned by the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo, where it is on permanent display. The Sarajevo Haggadah is handwritten on bleached calfskin and illuminated in copper and gold. It opens with 34 pages of illustrations of key scenes in the Bible from creation through the death of Moses. Its pages are stained with wine, evidence that it was used at many Passover Seders. In 1991 it was appraised at US$7 million. The Sarajevo Haggadah has survived many close calls with destruction. Historians believe that it was taken out of Spain by Spanish Jews who were expelled by the Alhambra Decree in 1492. Many og the Spanish Jews then came to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Notes in the margins of the Haggadah indicate that it surfaced in Italy in the 16th century. It was sold to the National Museum in Sarajevo in 1894 by a man named Joseph Kohen. During World War II, the manuscript was hidden from the Nazis and Ustashe by the Museum's chief librarian, Dervis Korkut, who at risk to his own life, smuggled the Haggadah out of Sarajevo. Korkut gave it to a Muslim cleric in Zenica, where it was hidden under the floorboards of either a mosque or a Muslim home. In 1957, a facsimile of the Haggadah was published by Sandor Scheiber, director of the Rabbinical Seminary in Budapest. In 1992 during the Bosnian War, the Haggadah manuscript survived a museum break-in and it was discovered on the floor during the police investigation by a local Inspector (Detective), Fahrudin Cebo (later nicknamed (Haggadah), with many other items thieves believed were not valuable. It later survived in an underground bank vault when Sarajevo was under constant siege by Bosnian Serb forces (Siege of Sarajevo -- the longest siege in the history of modern warfare). To quell rumors that the government had sold the Haggadah in order to buy weapons, the president of Bosnia presented the manuscript at a community Seder in 1995. Afterwards, the manuscript was restored through a special campaign financed by the United Nations and the Bosnian Jewish community in 2001, and went on permanent display at the museum in December 2002. In 1985 a reproduction was printed in Ljubljana, 5,000 copies were made. More recently, the museum has authorized the publication of a limited number of reproductions of the Sarajevo Haggadah, each of which has become a collector's item. In May 2006, the Sarajevo publishing house Rabic Ltd., announced the forthcoming publication of 613 copies of the Haggadah on handmade parchment that attempts to recreate the original appearance of the 14th century original, alluding to the 613 Mitzvot. There is a brief mention of the manuscript in the motion picture, "Welcome to Sarajevo". The novel People of the Book, by Geraldine Brooks (2008), crafts a fictionalised and highly inaccurate history of the Haggadah from its origins in Spain to the museum in Sarajevo. The Winter, 2002, issue of the literary journal Brick published Ramona Koval's account of the disputes surrounding the proposed UNESCO-funded display of the original codex in the context of the post-Dayton Agreement UN-supervised 1995 peace settlement. The history of the remarkable man, Dervis Korkut, who saved the book from the Nazi officers who sought it, was told in the December 3, 2007 issue of The New Yorker magazine. The article, entitled "The Book of Exodus", also by Geraldine Brooks, sets out the equally remarkable story of the young Jewish girl, Mira Papo, whom Korkut and his wife hid from the Nazis as they were acting to save the Haggadah. In a twist of fate, as an elderly woman in Israel, Mira Papo secured the safety of Korkut's daughter from the Serbian genocide of the 1990s. The astonishing and unique Sarajevo Haggadah was created in the middle of the 14th century, the golden age of Spain. We still do not know the exact date and place of the book’s creation or the name of the artist who illuminated it. Was it perhaps a wedding gift on the occasion of the marriage of members of two prominent families called Shoshan and Elazar, since there are two coats of arms in the bottom corners, one representing a rose (shoshan) and the other a wing (elazar)? Perhaps we will never learn. We do, however, know that in the eighteenth year after the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492, the Haggadah changed hands. A note mentions this fact but does not provide us with the names of either of the owners. There is another note, dated 1609, stating that the book does not speak against the Church, which saved it from being burned by the Spanish Inquisition. We know nothing further about it until it is mentioned in 1894. It is assumed that the manuscript came to Bosnia and Herzegov 1.9.11 "Puzzled by My ABC's" How often do you get to be a kid anymore? When you’re a kid, you lose yourself in everything. Do you remember the last time you said your ABC’s? When was the last time you strapped on your cape and jumped off the 42nd floor of your bed to save the world? As we grow older, we may lose connection of the world as we knew it when we were kids. At least most of us. Why do you think we relate so well to movies about talking toys? We grew up in those worlds. Where the cabinets towered above us. The staircase was a mountain. And the boogeyman lived in our closet. Today, I joined my cute little friend here on an magical alphabetical journey through the animal kingdom! It was fun. It was spur of the moment. It allowed me to be a kid again. Sure the knees creaked, and the back tweaked as I got up from the not-so-soft tile floor. But it was a small price to pay to live in memories maybe you can’t visit that often. So, just like my challenge with this project is to feed my brain with creativity, I have a challenge for you. Find sometime this week to let yourself be a kid again. Have a magazine to read? Try laying on your belly under a sunny window. Going to watch the latest blockbuster film? Swap it out for your favorite cartoon. Go to the candy store and fill a bag of treats for yourself. Find a swing set and make yourself nauseous as you tip your head back on the way up. Being a kid shouldn’t be puzzling. After all, it’s those pieces of a bigger puzzle that made you who you are today. Hardwood Floor Problems
Thursday, June 25th 2009 Had a relatively normal day. Went to work. Wrote marginally funny things on The Twitter. Wrote code that hypothetically runs on an iPhone. Got home. Tried to do some planning so I could figure out what I'm going to do with my life. Realized how complex anything I want to make is and decided to go for a stroll in Stern Grove. Random thoughts: Why are dating websites the only online services who's end goal is to create real world connections? I'd like to meet interesting people just to hang out or grab a drink with. Why is it so difficult and/or awkward to do that? Breaking a gigantic idea into smaller parts is a pain in the ass and the only way to do a startup (realistically) is to create something limited in scope, but meaningful. I'm always tired, all the time. I wish I had energy like how everyone else my age does. How does one move into certain social circles? For example, I just realized I live within walking distance of an internet personality I really respect and who's work I think is really cool. I'd like to meet/know him better. The problem is, I can't do this without being a total creep. Oak Floors Well it's been a hard week at the house. Finn lost it and attacked Amanda when she was trying to bring him inside after he escaped from his leash. Amanda is doing fine now after being on a few days of antibiotics, and a few trips to the doctor's office. Her hand hasn't recovered completely from the bites and scratches, but she's doing much better than a couple of days ago. I'm afraid that Finn is no longer with us. I made the extremely hard decision to have him put down. This isn't the first time he showed signs of aggression like this, but it was by far the worst.... I'm going to miss that crazy cat a lot. I don't even really like cats that much, but I have to say that other than his aggression problems Finn was by far the best cat in the world. RIP Finn. This picture doesn't really have anything to do with that story. It's just a shot of the hardwood floors and nice archways in my house. WARM WATER FLOOR HEATING. WARM WATER
Warm Water Floor Heating
Devil's Golf Course The Devil's Golf Course is an area of salty mud that forms upturned sharp-edged crags that one person long ago thought creates an uneven and hellish surface that is suitable only for the devil to golf. Not long ago, about 2000-4000 years ago during the Holocene, the climate was quite a bit wetter than today. It was so wet that water gradually filled Death Valley to a depth of almost 30 feet (10 m). The climate eventually warmed, rainfall declined, and the shallow lakes began to dry up. Minerals dissolved in the lake became increasingly concentrated as water evaporated. Eventually, only a briny soup remained, forming salty pools on the lowest parts of Death Valley's floor. Salts (95% table salt - NaCl) began to crystallize, coating the muddy lakebed with a three to five feet thick crust of salt. While the saltpan at Badwater (see above) periodically floods, then dries, Devil's Golf Course lies in a part of the Death Valley salt pan that is several feet above flood level. Without the smoothing effects of flood waters, the silty salt at Devil's Golf Course grows into fantastic, intricately detailed pinnacles. The pinnacles form when salty water rises up from underlying muds. Capillary action draws the water upward where it quickly evaporates, leaving a salty residue behind. The pinnacles grow very slowly, perhaps as little as an inch (2.5 cm) in 35 years. Wind and rain continually work to erode and sculpt the salty spires into an amazing array of shapes. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A warm and cozy overlook of the Blue Lagoon And indeed, warm and cozy it was.....inside of course! Just outside of those incredible floor to ceiling windows was another experience however for this Florida boy. After a quick change in the locker room and a pre spa shower, I was ready to brave the cold. Nothing like walking out into the frigid tundra whilst completely dripping wet to get you wondering where exactly you left your sanity! Once in the warm therapeutic mineral waters of this world class spa however, it was simply heaven! LOOSE CERAMIC FLOOR TILE - LOOSE CERAMIC
Loose Ceramic Floor Tile
Yay! Got an anchor through the ceramic tile and three inches into concrete without breaking anything It was a bit tricky. I had to mark the hole (easy) then I had a loose tile that I had already drilled a one inch hole in that I used as a guide for the hole saw as it drilled into the floor tile. I used plumbers putty to make a ring around the area that I could fill up with water. Once I got through the tile I just gave the center of the hole a sharp pop with a hammer and the plug came right out.. Then I had to use a hammer drill to get through the concrete. Then I put in the drop-in anchor and hammered the cinter pin to spread the spreaders. Done! That thing is *never* coming out! Repairing kitchen floor for ceramic As with the bathroom and bedroom downstairs some of the repello didn't bond with the sub floor (first pour). It is necessary to replace this "loose" cement before putting down the tile. LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR COVER : HIT THE FLOOR COVE
Let The Bodies Hit The Floor Cover
Shocking Finds [1:14] Katherine Vanmoer stepped through the door to the Milk Bar and closed it behind her. Glad to be out of the cold, Kat unzipped the jacket and shook the chill off her arms. Standing at the bottom of the steps, she takes a look around the bar she had only once been inside of. Hearing the bag drop and Triana's scream, Katherine ran to the woman's side, wondering what had her so upset. There, nailed to the floor was Alric, the man she ahd met one night in the Snake Pit. Her hands clasping over her mouth, she grabbed Triana's shoulders hoping the woman wouldn't faint. "Tri... Triana... Is that really...?" Katherine's thoughts were on the scene before her, imagination taking over some as she begins to worry horribly about Valo. [1:17] Triana Mills feels the shock set in, followed quickly by anger toward the little creatures standing around him. Her eyes narrowed at the numerous bite marks all over his body. She didn't even feel the hands on her shoulders, nor remember the woman was still next to her. Letting out a hiss of anger, her fangs bared themselves to the room, her gaze reddening as she stared at the rats. An angry growl of a scream erupted from her throat. "GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM HIM!" [1:21] Katherine Vanmoer felt Triana's whole body convulse a little, bringing her thoughts back to the man on the floor. Hearing the plea for the rats to disperse, Katherine ran quickly behind the bar and grabbed the fountain hose. Aiming the hose towards Alric from behind the bar, she pressed the seltzer button and let the carbonated water cover the floor and the rats. She had hoped that the sudden on set of water would work like the old adage. Anything was worth a try at this point. [1:26] Triana Mills watches as the rats scatter, first from her scream, then faster as the water douses them. They dispersed back into their dark corners and cubby holes in the walls. Stalking forward, she stood near Alric for a moment, daring any of them to return to her sight. When none came, her expression changed to one of tremendous sorrow. She turned and knelt down in the water next to him, her eyes reddening further as crimson tears began to stain her cheeks. Her fangs remained visible, all control over her vampiric feelings completely lost. Reaching out, her fingers shakily pressed to his throat to check for a pulse. [1:29] Katherine Vanmoer dropped the hose on the bar, and jumped back over it, kneeling on the other side of Alric, she went into life saving mode, teh CPR training she remembered from swim lessons at her local childhood pool. She placed her hands over Alric's sternum, ready to begin compressions, not really thinking anything of the strange red tears or fangs, but more so on counting to thirty. [1:31] Alric Bravin's eyebrows twitch at Triana's cool touch. He wasn't dead - merely passed out from pain and blood loss. But it is Katherine who really waks him up - her chest compressions rousing intense pain from his broken ribs. He lets out a hoarse, raspy growl as he fights the pain, his eyes opening to narrow slits. He tries to focus his eyes on Triana, but they won't obey. [1:33] Triana Mills reaches over in an attempt to grab Katherine's hands and push them rather forcefully away from him when she hears him growl and sees his eyes open. Her sorrowful expression becomes filled with concern as she looks down at him. "Alric...oh god...Alric..." Her hand moves to his cheek, the tears sliding to the floor beside him. [1:35] Katherine Vanmoer stops after only two compressions, Triana pushing her away. Sitting back on her heels she watches him turn his head, looking towards Triana. Katherine fumbles in her pockets searching for her cell, "I'll call the paramedics, you'll be okay..." Kat continues to search frantically, finally finding teh phone and flipping it open fingers poised to dial. [1:41] Alric Bravin looks up at Triana, his brows meeting as he stares up at her with eyes almost like a newborn - shakey and unfocused. "Li-Lilli," he croaks, a frown forming on his face as he realizes it's not Lilli. He's delirious, and dying. "Where?" The word rolls thickly off his tongue. Lilli had disappeared, and his eyes roll lazily in his sockets - searching for her. He finds her in the corner behind Katherine, that same smile on her face, beckoning him with the same graceful motion of her hands. He struggles weakly to lift his arms, a grimace of pain twisting his features into an agonizing and hideous mask. [1:44] Triana Mills feels her lips tremble with a choked sob, a hand reaching up to cover her mouth. Her other hand raised from his face, hopefully stopping Katherine from dialing the paramedics as she places her hand over her's. "No. It's too late for that." Growling softly as he tries to move, she bites her lower lip, reaching down with both hands to rip the spike out of the hand closest to her. A forceful growl erupts from Scene 9 Siduri eyed the lone vase of roses upon the desk, raising her hand for possibly the last time she hit Zedra on the temple, smiling cruelly as her fist made friends with Zedra's forehead before climbing to her feet and grabbing the vase. Whirling to face Zedra who was now struggling to stand, she smashed the cave on the desk until she simply held the jaggered end, leaving the red roses laying forgotten on the floor. Siduri growled and advanced on Zedra. "Oh wow Siduri. You have a glass? I'm sure that’s going to help this time." Siduri swung the glass at Zedra’s face, pulling her hand back at the last moment and instead slashing at her knee. Zedra stumbled to the ground, her black dress stained with blood. "Marcus!" she shouted. "Get her!" The undead man turned away from Sikete and begun to lumber towards her. With a cry Sikete jumped onto the mans back, covering Marcus's eyes with his hands. Siduri almost giggled at the sight of it, but quickly turned her attention back to the bleeding Zedra. She pushed down her failing arms and with grim determination slit Zedra's throat, allowing the crimson blood to gurgle from her mouth. Marcus let out a mighty yell and shook Sikete from his back, charging right at Siduri, pushing her back into the bookcase and crushing her under his body. "Get off her" came Sikete’s angry voice from behind the man that was squashing Siduri. She tried to push him off but her hands were pinned underneath the mighty bulk of his body. Curling his hands into angry fists, Sikete rained blows down on the back of Marcus’s head though they seemed to have no affect. “Siduri” he cried in desperation. “Siduri, what do I do?” She opened her mouth to reply but all that came out was a strangled gasp as Marcus had firmly fixed his hands around her neck. “I’m gonna do this nice and slow you blonde bitch” he growled. “No! Get off her” shouted Sikete again, trying to wrench Marcus’s hands from his neck. Without any apparent effort Marcus released Siduri with one hand and swung it at her husband, sending him crashing back next to the body of Zedra. He rolled over and yelped as he came face to face with her. Her eyes were open but dim, the animal anger gone from them. Her mouth to was open but now it hung limply instead of an angry scowl. The blood that had flooded out of the gash in her neck was still steady but had now been reduced to a far smaller floor. The responsible piece of glass was still laying discarded next to her body. Hearing his wife’s strangled cries Sikete reached over and grasped the piece of broken vase, careful not to let any blood on the jaggered edges touch him. With his last ounce of effort Sikete pushed himself to his feet and brought the glass down across the back of Marcus’s neck in silent determination. Marcus cried out in pain, his hands releasing Siduri to clutch his injured neck. Still gasping for air, Siduri took advantage of his distraction and raising her hand, she aimed an upward palm strike towards his nose. She connected with a sickening crunch and the man howled in pain his hand now going for his smashed nose. “Finish it.” Siduri urged to her husband. He looked at her in surprise. “I .. I can’t Sid” She paused for a moment, then nodded. “Give me the glass then” she ordered. Siduri held out expectantly but instead of receiving the glass from her husband, she instead received a grab from Marcus. Gripping his nose in one hand and her wrist in the other he growled - “I’m not that easy to kill” Releasing his nose he grabbed her shoulder and with a slam, pushed her back into the book case causing some of the books to topple onto her. She did not cry out, but instead went limp and almost gracefully folded onto the floor. If traveling from left to right you must go around the black line to get to the top of the mountain. (2) This square area is a garage. The grey lines show a catwalk. The small square with the up arrow in it is the stairs up. Now there are 3 windows in this room, if it has a down arrow near it, the window is on the bottom floor. Arrow up means it is on the catwalk. There are broken rails on the catwalk so you canfall off by the zombie window. (3) This is the PAP room. The PAP can only be used if you arrive here via ski lift. Once time is up, the doors open with the zombies waiting outside for you. At the same time, the cable car you arrived in will go back to the other side automatically. There will be a 3 minute waiting time to use this side again. This situation changes if you use the cable car from the top. It will cost you to go down the mountain though. Also the PAP will not be activated. (4) The first 2 players will always spawn here. And also will spawn here if playing solo. Quick revive is only on if you are playing solo. If you have 3 or 4 players, they will spawn on the other side of the PAP room. (5) This part of the map is a little confusing. The Black Square with the orange dots is the elevator. On the top floor, there is a window and area where the zombies drop from a ledge (down arrow) on the left side of the elevator. On the bottom floor, there is an area with 2 windows on the right side of the elevator. It is not free. Little Mr. Get Up and Go I am really tired. Been a long day of a long week. I lectured at PCC on Tuesday (in an actual lecture hall, with a remote control projector even!), taught a class on Wednesday, worked 11.5 hours today because I am taking the day off work tomorrow to teach a class in the morning and shoot a wedding in the evening, then getting back up on Sunday to teach another class. Throw in the usual selection of answering e-mails, two of which were for image requests for book publications, getting my own shooting in (one reason I am going out and doing night shoots of the bridges, the only time I have for photography), and two different photo meetups to get out shooting with a few friends and it has been quite a week. I had a friend recently comment on how much of a workaholic I am. It is not by choice nor terribly enjoyed. I don't hate it. It just is and it is what needs to be done right now. Hopefully not forever, though. Even though I don't mind the physical and mental exhaustion bits of working so much, it is tough to get to see Owen for about 20 minutes a day. He is usually sound asleep by the time I get off of work. And when I have weekends like I do this weekend, which are happening with some regularity, I get to see him even less. But boy is he fun when I do. Generally when he realizes I have a whole day off he gets really excited and even more energetic than usual. Rather than finding it even more exhausting, I find his energy inspiring. He definitely perks my energy levels up just being around him, so it is a good partnership there. But I really need to get to bed and get some rest for the day ahead. I am looking forward to it quite a bit, but will need to be in top form nonetheless. Anyway, this image just made me smile. Taken sometime last summer at the park as Owen was swinging. I would push him and get him going, then step to the side and try to time a photo of him swinging by. I was actually trying for a composition like this, with just his legs swinging into the frame. Not sure if this is necessarily as good of a result as I would have liked, but with the nice weather moving in, hopefully we'll get some more chances at this soon. Stoneville Saloon This quaint little VERY out-of-the-way saloon is located in Alzada, Montana, just a few miles across the state line. It has a very old west feel to it, right down to original 1800s back bar and the sawdust on the floor. Their slogan is "Cheap drinks, lousy food, conveniently located in the middle of nowhere". We didn't try the food, but the drinks were cheap, and it is definitely in the middle of nowhere. Their list of "Souvenirs" included: Weekend Marriage License - $1 Jackalope Hunting License - $1 Road Kill Stew - $3 Sheep Assholes - $3 Sheep Whiz Beer - $3.50 Part of the ceiling was also covered with "advice" in case you found yourself in need of some: "Try not to let your mind wander...it's much too small to be outside by itself" "Support catch & release...get a divorce" "A leading cause of stress is reality" "Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental" And my personal favorite: "People like you are the reason people like me need medication" 2/365 Today is 01022010, PALINDROME DAY.
