bin of banned items at san jose airport On the morning of Thursday, August 10, 2006 I woke up early, as I needed to get to LAX to take a morning flight to San Jose to attend meetings at Yahoo!s main office up in Sunnyvale. I had a very tight schedule and as I listened to the news on the radio about the just-foiled London terror plot, I worried about how the airport would be affected by this breaking news. If I didn't make it through the security lines in time, I would risk missing my flight, and consequently miss all of the fairly important back-to-back meetings I had scheduled. Also, I don't know about you, but it sort of just makes me a tiny bit nervous to get on a plane when I think about bombs going off inside planes filled with people. I tried not to think about that and instead worried about whether or not I would be able to get my toothpaste and deoderant through the security clearance. I only had one bag with me (an beautiful oversized cream-colored Marc Jacobs purse that I use as my overnight bag and that certainly would not have survived being checked through underneath the plane), and I was going on an overnight business trip. I don't know about you, but deodorant and toothpaste rank pretty high on my list of overnight necessities for overnight trips. At LAX haggared travelers were not sure about what they could and could not take onto the airplanes. There was a lot of confusion, because not everyone had had a chance to read the news yet and familiarize themselves with the list of things that were banned. At the security chckpoint, I removed my shoes and put my bag on the x-ray belt and held my breathe as I walked through the metal detector. Luckily, the screeners let my toothpaste and deodorant through. (I had a tiny travel-sized Crest toothpaste, and solid Secret deodorant, so these may have been deemed acceptable. It's hard to say. I didn't ask for clarification, because I didn't want to call attention to these contraband products, lest I risk them being taken away!) Water and drinks were the #1 thing they were taking away from people at LAX. The grown woman in front of me in the security line was brought to tears when her brand new bottle of sparkling Calistoga water was grabbed and pulled out of her bag. "But I just bought this in the airport!" she demanded to the security screener guy. The guy told her that that didn't matter. "You can't take any liquids through to the gates," he said. He told her she had to give it to them. She started to cry, "But can I just have a sip first, please, before you take it away?" People were stressed and it was making everyone thirsty. (It's very dry and warm in Los Angeles, and this adds to the thirsty-factor.) When we landed in San Jose (a much smaller airport in Northern California at the bottom of Silicon Valley), I noticed bins filled with banned items taken away from passengers. I snapped a photo of this one with my cameraphone. At San Jose airport, they were taking away deodorant and toothpaste, in addition to water and beverages. Also, I thought it was interesting that they were taking away chapstick too! I felt so thankful that they didn't take away my lipstick and moisturizer. It's very very dry in California, and it's not recommended to give a presentation with dry skin and chapped lips. Does the foiled London terror plot make you more afraid to fly? Or does it make you more confident about flying? Also, how do you feel about the increase security checks and increased list of banned items to take on planes? Have you had anything weird taken away from you before boarding a plane? Such places are appealing, particularly if they have a generous amount of clearance items. Apologies for polluting my stream with something digital (I haven't done that in a long time), incidentally. I use digital almost exclusively for more prosaic documentation. My Year in Photos - June 22nd - "Live, from the BBC studios..." Today's photo is of the famous BBC Broadcasting House, which I happened to be walking past on my way to a panel session I was speaking at. Not to do any disservice to the conference, which was very informative, but a room full of people intently listening to somebody talking about CRM systems in online customer services doesn't really make for the best photo opps. Neither did any of the random airport shots I took later in the day, as I made my way to Heathrow for my flight to Australia. So I opted for the reliable old BBC instead - it's a very nice building, so I hope that justifies it enough! :D A380 Flight The latest feature on planes is to have live streams of cameras, located at the nose of the plane; under the belly; and on the tail. This film shows landing at Heathrow, and I am seated on the left of the plane, just behind the wing. I'm a little disappointed as on previous flights, looking out the belly shot, you could see the wheel (or perhaps it was the shadow of the wheel) drop down. Unfortunately this could not be seen in this shot, and is a shame as it looked awesome when contacting the ground! In studies of bees begun in the early 1900s, the Austrian zoologist Karl von Frisch determined many of the details of their means of communication. In a classic paper published in 1923, von Frisch described how after a field bee discovers a new source of food, such as a field in bloom, she fills her honey sac with nectar, returns to the nest or hive, and performs a vigorous but highly standardized dance. If the new source of food is within about 90 m (about 295 ft) of the nest or hive, the bee performs a circular dance, first moving about 2 cm (about .75 in) or more, and then circling in the opposite direction. Numerous bees in the nest or hive closely follow the dancer, imitating her movements. During this ceremony, the other workers scent the fragrance of the flowers from which the dancer collected the nectar. Having learned that food is not far from the nest or hive, and what it smells like, the other bees leave the nest or hive and fly in widening circles until they find the source. If the new source of nectar or pollen is farther away, the discoverer performs a more elaborate dance characterized by intermittent movement across the diameter of the circle and constant, vigorous wagging of her abdomen. Every movement of this dance seems to have significance. The number of times the bee circles during a given interval informs the other bees how far to fly for the food. Movement across the diameter in a straight run indicates the direction of the food source. If the straight run is upward, the source is directly toward the sun. Should the straight run be downward, it signifies that the bees may reach the food by flying with their backs to the sun. In the event the straight run veers off at an angle to the vertical, the bees must follow a course to the right or left of the sun at the same angle that the straight run deviates from the vertical. Bees under observation in a glass hive demonstrate their instructions so clearly that it is possible for trained observers to understand the directions given by the dancers. Certain aspects of the dance language, such as how attendant bees perceive the motion of dancers in the total darkness of the nest or hive, are still unknown. The dance language is an important survival strategy that has helped the honey bee in its success as a species. The pyramids in Giza are just as massive as you’d think but, at the same time, they’re strangely underwhelming, as if decades of camera-toting visitors had robbed them of their power. Timbuktu—shorthand for back of beyond—is just as satisfyingly remote as you might hope, a dun-colored labyrinth on the edge of the Sahara. It’s been a bad couple of years for Timbuktu, though. There’s the global financial crisis—getting to northern Mali is neither easy nor cheap. Worse, Colombian cartels now ship drugs to Europe via West Africa, and Timbuktu, at the crossroads where Mali, Algeria, and Mauritania meet, is a prime spot on the smugglers’ route. There is also the regional Al Qaeda franchise, which has set up camp in the lawless deserts north of the city. They’ve kidnapped or killed both Westerners and locals. Just after New Year’s, a bomber hit the French embassy in Mali’s capital, Bamako. Local friends tell me that much of the violence (such as the murder of a cop in the center of Timbuktu a couple of years ago) is just criminal score-settling, nothing political about it. Washington, D.C. appears to think otherwise. Special Forces teams are training the Malian army in counterinsurgency, along with the “hearts and minds” work of inoculating children and meeting with village elders. Indeed, the U.S. presence is small, but it’s noticeable. At the airport in Bamako, I watched an unmarked, narwhal-gray transport plane taxi to a stop the next runway over. The men who emerged had a distinctively American swagger, little flags on their flight suits. Three-banded Plover Three-banded Plover Charadrius tricollaris, is a small wader. This plover is resident in much of eastern and southern Africa and Madagascar, mainly on inland rivers, pools and lakes. Its nest is a bare scrape on shingle. The adult Three-banded Plover is 18 cm in length. It has long wings and a long tail, and therefore looks different from most other small plovers in flight, the exception being the closely related Forbes's Plover, which replaces it in West Africa. Adult Three-banded Plover has medium brown upperparts, and the underparts are white except for the two black breast bands, separated by a white band, which gives this species its common and scientific names. The head is strikingly patterned, with a black crown, white supercilia extending from the white forehead to meet on the back of the neck, and a grey face becoming brown on the neck. The eye ring and the base of the otherwise black bill are red. This species is often seen as single individuals, but it will form small flocks. It hunts by sight for insects, worms and other invertebrates. Three-banded Plover has a sharp whistled weeet-weet call. Not Just Smoke & Mirrors! (Endeavour ~ STS-134 ~ Launch Sequence ~ 45) When I was a kid in school, one of my history teacher launched into a tirade about NASA's landing on the moon being all "smoke and mirrors" and some show on a Hollywood set! As you might imagine, I could not keep quiet and all my classmates watched in silence as I tried patiently to correct him, finally saying, "My Dad works for NASA and helped with this- he says they did NOT hire him for his good looks!" I was sent to the office where I gratefully waited out the class. Disappointing that none of my classmates spoke up, but as always, not afraid to tell the truth as my parents had taught me, and not afraid to stand up for what it means! :) Watching Endeavour wend her way up and into the clouds was a very poignant and bittersweet moment- this bird's final flight. It was a chance of a lifetime to see and I am SO happy to be able to share the experience in some small part with you all!
