362/365 The Perfect Weekend - Saturday
Today is design day. We got up and rode our skateboards over through Darling Harbour to the Powerhouse Museum. They had a design thing opening for the Sydney Design Festival and we saw the winners of that comp alon with the other museum exhibitions. Then we grabbed hot meat pies on the corner and rolled back to the house. The design festival had taken over the neighbourhood with trendy types wandering the streets with orange badges. This Saturday many of the local textile / modern furniture warehouses around our neighbourhood held an open house complete with offerings of wine and canapes. We visitied a few within blocks of the house and then hopped on a free shuttle to Redfern to see some more and get closer to the Alexandria hotel. There we met up with Lisa from work who was celebrating the end of Dry July - a charity thing where you raise money for cancer patients to NOT drink for the month of July. Being August 1st, it was a big piss up. After that we walked to my favourite restaurant for dinner, stopping off at a local pub for a drink along the way where a couple was sitting outside with a 7 month old baby boy who wanted to jump up and down in my lap. A delectable meal of duck at Strangers with Candy finished up the wonderful evening.
CHQ Shopping Centre - Dublin Docklands
In 2008 it was claimed that the chq centre in Dublin's docklands was on target to become the latest upmarket shopping venue in Dublin city centre.
Just eight minutes walk from O'Connell Street, the vast chq building started life in 1820 as a bonded warehouse for wines and tobacco. Then in 1856, it became renowned for another reason, when the Crimean War banquet was served in the building, for the 3,000 Irish soldiers returning from the Crimean War.
For many years, the building lay derelict and controversy surrounded plans for its redevelopment, but its restoration has now been completed by the Dublin Docklands Development Authority. It will be the stylish centrepiece of the International Financial Services Centre.
Accordingly, a raft of retailers who are pitching their wares at an affluent audience have become the first to move into chq. They include Meadows & Byrne, which has recently opened a 1,300-sq m store for home furnishings, gifts and accessories.
Others include Bunnies by the Bay, an American luxury baby and gift boutique; Carphone Warehouse; Environment Furniture; Fran & Jane; Henry Jermyn Shirts, House of Tea and LouisCopeland, the tailors.
