  • debase: lower in value by increasing the base-metal content

  • Mix (metals) to make an alloy

  • admixture: the state of impairing the quality or reducing the value of something

  • Debase (something) by adding something inferior

  • a mixture containing two or more metallic elements or metallic and nonmetallic elements usually fused together or dissolving into each other when molten; "brass is an alloy of zinc and copper"

Making of the Low Melting Alloy 1

Making of the Low Melting Alloy 1

Here is how I made the low melting alloy consisting of the following:

52.5% Bismuth
31.0% Lead
15.5% Tin
1.0% Antimony

The melting point once these components are mixed together should be around 100-95 C. My lead already came as itself a 3% Antimony alloy, so my formula is different from the published 32% lead version with its melting point at 95 C.

So here is my wooden mold, bismuth, tin, and lead in their proper proportions, plus paraffin for use as flux.

The lead was from tire weights I find along the side of the road, the bismuth and tin are both sold as environmentally-friendly lead substitutes for fishing weights and such at sporting good places or Targets and Wal-Marts in the appropriate sections. Unfortunately those metals are a bit pricey.

The Bessa strips, just for me.

The Bessa strips, just for me.

I decided to persist with removing the top of my R3M in order to fix the problem with the vertical adjustment of the focusing mirror. I managed pretty well considering I "fixed" the problem, and that there was only one washer I couldn't place back into the camera (it popped out when I removed the top and has something to do with the film winder I'm sure, but hey it seems to work just fine without it).

So what I discovered was the flaw in the design of the vertical adjustment itself - the only thing that connects the screw to the adjustment lever was some kind of "C" shaped design that hugs around a portion of the screw, held together by friction. So in fact what I "popped" out was nothing more than ripping out the screw from the clip when I unfastened it too much (they possibly used something like nail polish to glue it together too).

Now, I'm no engineer, but that seems like some pretty shotty design right there. I suspect it was made like that for accessibility though, I don't think I'd have been able to repair it myself if the lever had been inaccessible. But then again, perhaps I wouldn't have had to repair it if it had been designed properly in the first place.

escape this!

escape this!

simple shutter release escapement from an Argus C3: for a size reference, it's sitting on the bottom of a 35mm film container.

I recently had the opportunity to spend some time with a clockmaker, which turns out to be pretty invaluable experience for shutter repair. Thanks!

the basic mechanism of this escapement is that of the "anchor escapement," without the pendulum -- the mass of the fork provides the necessary damping instead. from a conceptual perspective, the shutter mechanism rotates the shutter cam pawl, which turns the geartrain driving the escape wheel, which oscillates the fork (at a greatly increased speed), slowing the rotation of the entire assembly. the shutter mechanism itself is linked to the shutter cam pawl such that it remains open until the pawl is at full rotation; tensioning the shutter allows the escape spring to reset the escapement. the shutter speed linkage limits the rotation of the pawl, resulting in a controllable duration.

  • The programs and other operating information used by a computer

Nieuport 28C.1

Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Udvar-hazy Center, Dulles, Va., October 29, 2009.

Info from the museum's website:

Appearing in mid 1917, the Nieuport 28C.1 was rejected by the French in favor of the sturdier, more advanced Spad XIII. Having no suitable fighter design of its own, the United States adopted the Nieuport 28 as a stop-gap measure before the much-in-demand Spad XIIIs could be made available from the French. It was the first fighter aircraft to serve with an American fighter unit under American command and in support of U.S. troops. It was also first type to score an aerial victory with an American unit.

The Nieuport 28 also made its mark in U.S. aviation history after the war. Twelve were employed by the U.S. Navy for shipboard launching trials from 1919 to 1921. Others were operated by the U.S. Army in the 1920s. In private hands, several were modified for air racing, and a number found their way into Hollywood movies. Still others became privately-owned airplanes flying in various sporting and commercial capacities.
Gift of James H. "Cole" Palen.

The museum's Nieuport 28 has a complex and confusing history. It was acquired in 1986 from Cole Palen, founder and operator of the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. He flew the aircraft regularly in his air shows from 1958 to 1972. Immediately before its transfer to NASM, the airplane was on loan from Palen to the Intrepid Sea/Air/Space Museum in New York.

Upon close inspection, it became clear that the NASM aircraft is a composite of several different Nieuport 28s. The various components had been owned by a number of different people and used in a variety of capacities over a long period of time. As a result, the pieces have been shuffled around a lot and re-built many times. A large number of parts were not original and in many cases the replacement parts were not prepared to original specification. As a result, a serious investigation of the history of the NASM airframe was undertaken to determine as near as possible the provenance of the museum's Nieuport 28.

When it was acquired a number of erroneous assumptions were passed on, probably uncorroborated stories from Cole Palen. Initially the aircraft was believed to have been a war-time product and that it flew with the U.S. Air Service in World War I. Additionally, it was purported to have been one of the twelve U.S. Navy Nieuports tested in 1919-1921, that it was used in the Hollywood epic "Dawn Patrol," and that Howard Hughes had owned it at one point. Painstaking research has demonstrated that nearly all of these assumptions were untrue.

To determine the actual history of the NASM Nieuport, the logical place to begin was with the numbers and markings on the airframe. There are five different serial numbers on the airplane. The fuselage number on the firewall is 6497. The upper wings have a manufacturing date of February 1919 with serial numbers 7103 (left panel) and 7226 (right panel). The lower left wing panel is marked as having been fabricated in November 1918 with serial number 6465. The lower right was made in October 1918 with serial number 6432.

The first obvious conclusion drawn from these data was that the NASM Nieuport 28 is essentially a postwar product. The lower wing panels were made at the very end of the war, which concluded on November 11, 1918. The fuselage serial number being higher than the lower wing numbers dates it as very late 1918 or very early 1919. The upper wings are dated 1919. Therefore, the NASM aircraft could not have been a war veteran. Further, given the late production dates, it can be concluded that the NASM aircraft must be a modified and improved postwar version of the Nieuport 28C.1, sometimes referred to as a Nieuport 28A.

A third conclusion drawn from the serial numbers was that the components are probably from at least five different aircraft. This is not necessarily so, as wing panels, tail units, fuselages, etc., were assembled from production line manufacture. Nevertheless, given that the serial numbers are so far apart, it is hard to believe that all the present components represent one original aircraft. The upper and lower wing sets could have been originally paired together as their respective numbers are relatively close together. But the 6400 series serial numbered wings and 7000 series numbered wings were unlikely to have been on the same airframe when the airplane first left the factory. Moreover, the NASM airplane, on at least one occasion, probably more, was put together from "best available components" from a collection of Nieuport 28 airframes. The most reasonable interpretation based on the evidence is that the NASM Nieuport 28 is not a documented single airframe with a continuous history. It is an amalgam of component parts of several aircraft brought together many years after their original individual manufacture.

Certain that the NASM aircraft is not a war-time Nieuport, the n

accordion repair

accordion repair

this busker's accordion was all open and taken apart and he was trying to get it fixed up. luckily i had my leatherman tool in by bag and was able to lend a hand. luckily i also had my camera in my bag so may-li was able to steal it for a bit and capture the moment. it was good to hear the instrument in working order again.

then later at que tal cafe i helped a lady fix her jammed stapler.

leatherman did double duty today.

this weekend the topic of helping other has come up at various times. all about how giving is not always a selfless act becaus it makes you feel better and how you can even boost yourself up to others by then bragging about how you helped someone.

may-li had a nice insight - by not reaching out for help when you need it you might actually be withholding happiness from your friends - that is - the joy and satisfaction of helping someone else out.

so why do i post this. i might say it's to justify writing about the conversations that came up this weekend... but maybe i'm just boosting my own ego and trying to bolster my career as a freelance accordion repair guy.

i grew up around accordions because my mom plays. i hadn't ever seen the inside of an accordion's bellows. for that i am grateful. it's pretty cool.

We all make mistakes.

We all make mistakes.

My lens was stuck and after being quoted $250+ I decided to take repairs into my own hands. As you can see, that didn't work out too well. Now my camera talks instead of taking photos.

The Powerlift System™ is a system for constructing a grout column around the shaft of a standard helical pile. The Powerlift ™ is resistant to bucking in weak surface soils, is a stiffer pile (deflects less at a particular load), and provides additional corrosion protection in aggressive soils. The Powerlift ™ develops additional capacity by combing both end-bearing on the helical plates and skin friction along the rough surface of the grout column. The result is a high capacity pile system. Potential foundation settlement problems can be solved by installing the proper Foundation System prior to pouring concrete footings.

Castaway by flying boat

Castaway by flying boat

Scientific concern about changes to atmospheric composition is not new. Back in 1974, I found myself part of a project to find a suitable location for Australia to build a specialised station to measure the background composition of the atmosphere. The site needed the cleanest possible air to study, so it had to be reasonably remote yet still accessible.

Lord Howe Island was one siting possibility for the station. An airstrip was being built there to enable normal air services, but it was incomplete and the only way to fly to the island was by flying boat: this was the last regular airline service in the world still operated by the old ‘boats’. With the runway coming soon they had been sold and were being retired. One had been taken out of service to prepare for the trip overseas, by replacing the seats and other fittings with long range tanks, but the other was doing limited service.

We had a smooth trip out, lifting off from Sydney Harbour past one of the Manly hydrofoil ferries, then banking east over Pinchgut. That trip itself was an unforgettable experience. There is no comparison between the modern ‘cattle class’ and the 1930s timber-panelled ambiance, large windows, and generally spacious and relaxed style of the old flying boats.

The return trip was to be two days later, but on the second night a huge gale came up, broke the flying boat’s moorings, and washed it aground. These flying boats had been the island’s lifeline for many years, and it was a disconsolate crowd of locals and visitors who gathered around the damaged aircraft on the beach next morning.

As I mentioned though, the other flying boat was out of service being refitted, and the runway was unfinished. We had become castaways on a sub-tropical paradise! Unfortunately it was winter and the weather was poor, which took off the gloss somewhat. Finally, after a week, the other flying boat was returned to passenger-carrying standard and the waves and weather improved enough for it to retrieve us. We began our take-off run from alongside the stranded flying boat on the beach

As a footnote, the atmospheric monitoring station was finally built in north-west Tasmania and has been doing valuable research ever since. The damaged flying boat was repaired and went back to England, where it now has pride of place in a special museum.

CSX has installed new RF controlled switch machines and LED dwarf signals in the railroad yard at Erwin, Tennessee, April 2009

New radio controlled automatic switch machines with LED dwarf signals have been installed to operate the turnouts on the through tracks in the CSX Railroad Yard at Erwin, Tennessee, April 9, 2009. The rebuilding and modification of the railroad yard started the previous Summer in 2008. The purpose of this new installation is to speed up operations and to reduce the personnel required to operate the numerous manual switch machines located throughout the yard. The sidings and repair shop tracks still have the standard manual type switch machines with conventional targets. With this new installation, if desired, a freight train could pass through the yard without stopping and all the turnouts would be lined up automatically without the attention of the yard crew. It is normal for trains to stop at this yard before proceeding in either direction and crews seem to be changed here normally. One of the employee's told me that CSX was planning to install video cameras throughout the yard to monitor all operations.
