Shorts to go with the Puppet Show tunic. They didn't end up with as much gather at the bottom as they should have. Due to an immediate deadline (self-imposed, of course), I didn't take the time to figure out where I went wrong. Next time.

French Fashion For Men

    french fashion
  • Fashion has been an important industry and cultural export of France since the seventeenth century, and modern "haute couture" originated in Paris in the 1860s.

    for men

Bonington, Richard Parkes (1802-1828) - Portrait of a Bearded Man in Historical Dress (Metropolitan Musem of Art, New York City)

Brush and brown wash; 11 x 9 3/16 in.

English Romantic painter, known for his landscapes and historical scenes. His style attracted many imitators in both England and France, and he exercised an influence out of all proportion to his brief life.

At Calais, France (c. 1817), Bonington learned the watercolor tradition of the English painter Thomas Girtin. He became acquainted with the French painter Eugene Delacroix in Paris. Bonington entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris (1819), and joined the atelier of Baron Gros, who had departed from the rigid classicism of the influential Jacques-Louis David. Bonington’s bright watercolors, a novelty in Paris, financed sketching tours in Normandy, Picardy, and Flanders (1821–23). He showed at the Paris Salon in 1822 and at the famous Salon of 1824 with John Constable, Sir Thomas Lawrence, and others, where he won a gold medal. With Delacroix he studied Constable, and together they went to England (1825), where Bonington learned something of Turner’s skill. More important, both were affected by the English fashion for painting scenes from history. In his subsequent historical pictures, he evolved in oil a new synthesis of Flemish and Venetian techniques. His works were exhibited in London (1826, 1828) and won immediate popularity.

As a master of the Romantic movement and as a technical innovator in oil and watercolor, Bonington was influential in England and France. His gifts as a draftsman were high; as a colorist, good. He also showed his talent in the new medium of lithography, illustrating Sir Walter Scott.

French Connection adverts are as confusing as any French new wave film

French Connection adverts are as confusing as any French new wave film

The adverts are as confusing as any French new wave film but, like arthouse films, they star beautiful people wearing beautiful clothes. The latest instalment of French Connection's esoteric "You are Man?" and "You are Woman?" campaign sees a leggy model in a white jumpsuit glide by on roller skates while setting off fire extinguishers. In another irreverent image, a mustachioed metrosexual in a smart shirt stands in the sea astride an inflatable animal. It's a million miles way from T-shirts emblazoned with "FCUK like a bunny" and "FCUK for England" which resulted in high street oblivion for the retailer in the middle of the last decade, when shoppers finally tired of the risque play on the UK brand's initials. "What French Connection did with FCUK got people talking, but now they are trying to get people thinking," says Stuart Wood, global creative director at design agency Fitch. "Its clothes aren't that different from ones you can buy at chains like Reiss, but what it has always had is attitude. FCUK was a blunt instrument but it had attitude. But if you are over the age of 25, you are so used to seeing that slogan that French Connection had to do something radical to make you reassess the brand." Read more on Guardian

Great British Brands - Pears Soap

Great British Brands - Pears Soap

Pears transparent soap is a brand of soap first produced and sold in 1789 by Andrew Pears at a factory just off Oxford Street in London, England. It was the world's first transparent soap.

Under the stewardship of Thomas J. Barratt, A. & F. Pears Ltd. company initiated a number of innovations in sales and marketing. According to Unilever records, Pears Soap was the world's first registered brand and is therefore the world's oldest continuously existing brand.

Pears soap, invented in 1789, is the world's oldest soap brand. Its unique manufacturing process requires the soap to be dried for up to 13 weeks in order for the alcohol used in the process to evaporate (and be re-used).

The soap bars are laid out on wooden trays in huge drying rooms. The trays are stacked vertically so that the soap in the top trays is exposed to hotter air than those on the lower trays and becomes much darker, almost black sometimes.

Andrew Pears, the son of a farmer, was born in around 1770 and moved from his native Mevagissey in Cornwall to London in about 1787 to train as a barber. He completed his apprenticeship in 1789 and established a barber's shop in Gerrard Street in Soho and began to produce cosmetic products.

At that time Soho was a wealthy residential area and Andrew's clientele included many wealthy socialites who took great pride in their appearance.

The fashion amongst the wealthy of the period was for pristine white (alabaster) complexions; tanned faces were associated with those who laboured out of doors.

Andrew found that his powders and creams were frequently being used to cover up damage caused by the harshness of the soaps and other beauty products (many of which contained arsenic or lead) that were in general use at the time.

Pears began to experiment with soap purification and eventually managed to produce a gentle soap based on glycerine and other natural products.

The clarity of the soap gave it a novel transparent appearance which provided a marketing advantage. To add to the appeal, Andrew gave the soap an aroma reminiscent of an English garden.

In 1835, his grandson Francis Pears joined the business and created the company A. & F. Pears Ltd. In 1838 Andrew Pears retired, leaving Francis in charge of the company. In 1851 the company was awarded the prize medal for soap at The Great Exhibition.

Francis' son-in-law Thomas J. Barratt, sometimes referred to as the father of modern advertising, eventually managed the firm.

In 1862, production of the soap moved to Isleworth, and three years later Francis' son, Andrew, joined A. & F. Pears Ltd. as joint proprietor and ran the factory, whilst Thomas ran the head office in London.

In the mid 1910s, A. & F. Pears Ltd. became part of Lever Brothers and moved production to Port Sunlight in north west England.

Pears soap in now made in India by Hindustan Lever a company which Unilever controls a fifty two percent stake.

From left to right, Mount Tumbledown, Mount William and Sapper Hill on East Falkland. Mount Tumbledown was attacked during the 1982 reoccupation of the Falklands by the 2nd Battalion of the Scots Guards on 13-14 Jun. Mount William was taken unopposed by the 1/7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles later on 14 Jun when the Argentines fled, believing their own blood-curdling tales about the Gurkhas. A and C Companies of 40 Commando Royal Marines, under the command of 1st Battalion, Welsh Guards, captured Sapper Hill almost without conflict, just before the Argentine surrender. Thank you to Horadan, below, who notes that the Argentines defending Sapper Hill had run out of ammunition.

North of Shakespeare: The True Story of the Secret Genius Who Wrote the World's Greatest Body of Literature

No conspiracies, no speculation, just the documented proof that Sir Thomas North wrote the plays and that Shakespeare merely adapted them for the public stage. Yes, Shakespeare wrote everything clearly attributed to him while he was alive; yes, all the Shakespeare-era title pages were correct; but as "North of Shakespeare" shows, most of the plays attributed to Shakespeare during his lifetime and even up until 1620 are not the same plays that everyone now believes he wrote. "North of Shakespeare," written by the acclaimed scholar-author of "Here Be Dragons" (Oxford University Press -- 2009), exposes extraordinary, documented information that overturns everything we had once believed about Shakespeare. Specifically, a thorough analysis of seven rare documents has confirmed that the impoverished, war-weary scholar-knight, Sir Thomas North, was the one who actually penned the original “Shakespearean” masterpieces and that Shakespeare had merely adapted North's plays for the public stage. Moreover, a careful examination of the actual title pages of the dramas published while Shakespeare was alive and even up until 1620 -- combined with a study of all relevant comments from his contemporaries -- reconfirms this same fact. The true story of North and Shakespeare, unlike all other speculations over authorship, whether put forth by orthodox scholars or intelligent dissidents, is devoid of all conspiracies, hypothetical behind-the-scenes-intrigue, or outlandish and dastardly motives. What remains is one exceedingly simple explanation, confirmed repeatedly by numerous documents and multiple lines of evidence, that unknots confusion, settles the paradoxes, and, once and for all, solves the mystery of Shakespeare. With Dennis McCarthy's first book, "Here Be Dragons / How the Study of Animal and Plant Distributions Revolutionized Our Views of Life and Earth" (Oxford UP, 2009), many reviewers highlighted the book's power to transform the way we see the world: "The Huffington Post" described it as "a grand time-and-space voyage of the imagination," concluding that "at the end of the book you will be someone different." "Science News" referred to the work as "fascinating and revelatory." And "Science Magazine" declared, "[W]e will never look at the world in the same way again." McCarthy has also published revealing papers in the leading journals of English literature, geophysics, and biogeography. In a 2007 paper for "The Journal of Geophysical Research," McCarthy became the first researcher to provide the correct explanation for the global distribution of continents and oceans. This became the subject of a number of major news reports around the globe, and "Der Spiegel" noted that the "study surprises the professional world." More recently, McCarthy's 2009 paper for Oxford's "Notes and Queries" was the first to identify the long-sought source for Hamlet's famous "To be or not to be" soliloquy. McCarthy will now transform our view of Shakespeare in the same way that his past works have helped change our views on the history of life and Earth.
