Day 319/366
Guess who finally got to eat a cupcake from Magnolia??? Hint: IT WAS ME!! I went up to Patt and Irma's tonight to help Irma decorate cupcakes for Saturday's 80s party. Irma used Magnolia's recipes for cupcakes and buttercream, and having listened to me whine so often about how I'd never had one, was insanely nice enough to bring a few from the bakery home to give us an idea of what we'd be making. Let me just say, this was exactly as awesome as I'd imagined.

New apartment- Bedroom
I moved 3 days ago, and got a new bed in the process. This room definitely a work in progress. I am taking my time searching for the perfect pieces for my bedroom, looking at thrift stores, antique malls, yard sales, craigslist, etc. I enjoyed my vanity project so much, I'm ready to find some more furniture to refinish! I still need/want a bookshelf or two, a tall wardrobe or chester drawers, and a fluffy chair with footstool. Also not sure if I will keep the '50s rolling cart as my nightstand, or replace it with a 1930s/40s waterfall piece. I found the cart at an antique fair several months ago, and just painted the trays blue last week. Not allowed to paint the walls here, so I need color wherever I can get it!

The Bronx from Washington Bridge
Washington Bridge, Washington Heights
The Washington Bridge, the next major extant bridge constructed in New York City after the Brooklyn Bridge, is a monument in the history of nineteenth-century American engineering. A steel and cast- and wrought-iron arch bridge with arched masonry approaches, the Washington Bridge was constructed over the Harlem River in 1886-1889 to connect the Washington Heights section of Manhattan with the Bronx. It has long been considered one of the nation's finest nineteenth-century steel arch bridges, perhaps second only to the famous Eads Bridge in St. Louis of 1867-74 .
History of the Project
After the Civil War, as the development of upper Manhattan proceeded, plans were begun for a crossing over the Harlem River to the Bronx, In 1868 the Board of Commissioners of Central Park (then responsible for the layout of new streets in upper Manhattan) considered the question of a new bridge in connection with the development of Washington Heights when Andrew Haswell Green, executive officer of the Board, suggested in a report that a bridge be built north of the High Bridge Aqueduct (Completed in 1848 by engineer John B. Jervis, High Bridge is a designated New York City Landmark.)
In 1869 the New York State Legislature authorized a survey of bridge locations along the Harlem River, and an act of May 19, 1870, mandated the newly created Department of Public Parks to locate and build a bridge. Following a delay of several years, the New York State Supreme Court appointed commissioners in February 1876,to supervise the assemblage of land for the new bridge.
A site was chosen 1500 feet north of High Bridge and land was acquired on both sides of the river.
After another delay of several years, four alternate bridge designs including suspension, iron cantilever, and masonry arch types were proposed in February 1881, by William Jarvis McAlpine, chief engineer of the Department of Public Parks. In 1883 the department requested further design submissions and several were received, for cantilever and metal arch bridges.
But since the only action in fifteen years was land acquisition, political pressure was applied (particularly by Andrew H. Green) for the transfer of bridge construction authority to a different body. On June 11, 1885, the Legislature created the Harlem River Bridge Commission (Chapter 487, Laws of 1885), and three new commissioners were appointed on July 21, 1885. William J. McAlpine was named chief engineer to the commissioners on September 29, 1885.
McAlpine (1812-1890) was one of the country's leading engineers, involved during his long career with a great variety of difficult engineering projects in the United States, Canada, and around the world. Raised in upstate New York, he was a student of engineer John B, Jervis. Projects on which he worked included numerous railroads and canals in New York State and elsewhere, the waterworks of Brooklyn, Albany, and Chicago, the U.S. Navy Yard dry dock in Brooklyn, and the Third Avenue Bridge and Riverside Park and Drive in New York City. In 1852 he was elected State Engineer of New York, and served as State Railroad Commissioner from 1855 to 1857.
In 1865 he was chairman of the commission of engineers appointed to examine plans for the St. Louis Bridge. He served as third president of the American Society of Civil Engineers from 1868 to 1869.
The Iron and Steel Arch Bridge
Interest in the use of iron and steel for American bridges had increased greatly in the last third of the nineteenth century. The arch bridge was the second oldest form, after the suspension bridge, in which iron was used exclusively for structural members. The first iron arch bridge was constructed by-Darby and Wilkinson in 1775-1781 over the River Severn at Coalbrookdale, England.
The first American iron arch bridge, completed in 1839 by Richard Delafield, carried the National Road over Dunlap's Creek at Brownsville, Pennsylvania. The second American iron arch bridge was the Pennsylvania Avenue Bridge-Aqueduct over Rock Creek in Washington, D.C., built by Gen. Montgomery C. Miegs in 1858.
But the use of the iron arch for bridges in the United States was rare until after the Civil War, when foundries were finally able to cast elements on a large enough scale. Carl Condit asserts that, "When the arch of iron and steel finally began to compete successfully with other forms, it did so because the builders frequently chose it on aesthetic rather than functional grounds."
With the triple-span Eads Bridge crossing the Mississippi River at St. Louis, designed by James B. Eads and built in 1867-1874, the use of steel was introduced into American bridge construction. The Eads Bridge is generally considered the greatest of the nineteenth-century American metal arch bridges.
The Design Competition
Deciding that the new Harlem River Bridge should stand as a monument that could be compared with the recently completed Brooklyn Bridge, an iron susp

FABRIC BIN- Organizer- BEIGES- BLUES and OFF-WHITE- Extra Large
I used two different prints by Marcus Brothers called "Surf and Sand" to make this fabric bin. The upper part of the bin on the front is pieced together using a paisley print and a polka dot print. For the lower part of the bin, handles and the back I used a coordinating polka dot print. The inside is fully lined.
This bin is quite large and will hold many items. They make great organizers for closets, shelves and childrens rooms. Fill it up with anything you want. Handles are on both sides for easy lifting and carrying.

Ponte Vecchio, solid white oak large bench, recycled wood from wine fermentation oak barrels
This is Stil Novo Design’s exclusive solid white oak large bench.
Our ‘Ponte Vecchio’ bench is entirely made with recycled oak staves from wine fermentation barrels.
Our solid bench is a perfect combination of practicality, comfort, originality and sophistication; it can be integrated in any room of the house and will blend with any style of interior decor, from rustic to modern.
This stunning bench makes a truly unique and practical piece of home decor.
By using the natural curve of a stave from a hefty fermentation barrel, we are able to create this particularly smooth and ‘silky’ silhouette for the top seat and legs, while using the actual metal hoop from the barrels to create the decorative arch under the seat.
The bench is finished with a beautiful natural ‘golden oak’ color, and the underside side of the staves with a rich ‘cherry chocolate’ finish to complement the natural staining of the red wine previously held in the barrels.
Ponte Vecchio measurements are about 40” X 14 1/2” (top) and 18 1/2” height

Wardrobe Hook
Sometimes you see something and talk yourself out of buying it, and then instantly regret it once it's out of reach.
This was in Anthropologie yesterday, but marked $32, which was a bit much for my poor wallet. But I'd been looking at similar black cast iron antiques on eBay for weeks now, and was surprised to see a repro in silver. I checked it out online and it was "no longer available" so I went back today and it wasn't marked as such, but was half off AND the last one in the store. I win.
I was thinking of putting it in my entry way, but now I'm think it'll go in my bathroom once I remodel it. Five hooks fold flat against the wall, and swing out and lock into place when needed. Neato!
Buried Treasure
I found these cute wallboard drawings underneath the wallpaper in my hall bathroom tub/toilet room. There's a person's legs sticking out from under a car, a sherriff horse-thing, half of what looks to be a woman (the rest of her's behind the cabinet that won't be coming down), and something else that suffered too much from time and wallpaper glue to be visible (under the cabinet)

The lower church of the Franciscan Monastery of Assisi
The Franciscan monastery (Sacro Convento) and the lower and upper church (Basilica inferiore e superiore) of St Francis were begun immediately after his canonization in 1228. Simone di Pucciarello donated the land for the church, a hill at the west side of Assisi, known as "Hill of Hell" (it. Collo d'Inferno - here the criminals were put to death). Today, this hill is aptly called "Hill of Paradise".
The foundation stone was laid by Pope Gregory IX on 17 July 1228, although construction may already have been begun. This impressive church was designed and supervised by brother Elia Bombardone, one of the first followers of St. Francis and the former provincial minister of Syria. The lower basilica was finished in 1230. On Pentecost 25 May 1230 the uncorrupted body of St. Francis was brought in a solemn procession to the lower basilica from its temporary burial place in the church of St. George (now the basilica of St. Clare). The construction of the upper basilica was began after 1239. Construction was completed in 1253. Its architecture is a synthesis of Romanesque and French Gothic artwork, establishing many of the typical characteristics of Italian Gothic architecture.
The churches have been decorated by the greatest late medieval Roman, Umbrian and Tuscan artists of their time, giving these churches an unequaled importance in the development of Italian art. The lower church has frescos by renowned late-medieval artists, such as Cimabue and Giotto; in the upper church are a series frescoes depicting scenes in the life of St Francis attributed to Giotto and his circle.
Pope Nicholas IV, the former Minister-General of the Order of Franciscans, raised the church to the status of papal church in 1288.
The Piazza del Loge, the square leading to the church, is surrounded by colonnades constructed in 1474. They housed the numerous pilgrims flocking to this church.
On 27 October 1986 and January 2002, Pope John Paul II gathered in Assisi with the leaders of the great world confessions to pray for peace.
On September 26, 1997, St Francis' 816th birthday, Assisi was struck by an earthquake which caused four fatalities. The Basilica was badly damaged (part of the vault collapsed, carrying with it a fresco by Cimabue), and was closed for two years for restoration.
The lower basilica consists of a central nave with several side chapels with semi-circular arches. The nave is decorated with the oldest frescoes in the church by an unknown artist, called Maestro di San Francesco. They feature five scenes from the Passion of Christ on the right side, while on the left side equally five scenes from the Life of St. Francis. By this juxtaposition, the Franciscans wanted to contribute to the idea of their founder as a second Christ.
They are connected by a low blue-painted ceiling decorated with golden stars. Most images on the lower walls have decayed to leave almost no trace, except on the right wall fragments of Virgin and Child with an Angel by Cimabue.
These frescoes, executed in tempera on dry plaster, were completed about 1260-1263. They are considered by many as the best examples of Tuscan wall paintings prior to Cimabue. As the popularity of this church increased, side chapels for noble families were added between 1270 and 1350, destroying the frescoes on the opened walls.
The first chapel on the left is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. It was built by Cardinal da Montefiore, and was decorated between 1317 and 1319 with ten frescoes depicting his life by Simone Martini and with a polyptych with figures of saints. These are amongst the greatest works of Simone Martini and the finest examples of 14th century painting. The use of lead white has over the years darkened several passages in these works.
