Redlands Homes Painted Photos and Photoart
Original photos that were printed on canvas, painted in oil or acrylic and rephotographed, or photos developed in photoshop and painted in Corel Painter or enhanced photographs assembled into Collage. All of the homes are in Redlands, California and took anywhere from 1-19 photos each to create.

WW 2 Pill Box
During WW 2 my dad was the assistant G-4 in the Sixth Armored Division of Patton's Third Army; his area of expertise was logistics, an assignment he performed so well that, as a major, he was awarded the Silver Star. One issue of Stars And Stripes, the army's weekly newspaper that covered the war, featured the story of his award for heroism and a photo of him on their front page.
I know this because in the late 1950's he created a scrapbook of his service with Patton and the "Super Sixth", filling it with snapshots he'd taken with his 35mm camera; and that issue of Stars and Stripes was one of the documents he'd included. As a boy I used to pore over this album for hours, fascinated by the photos and my dad's brief handwritten descriptions beneath each one.
Included were at least two photos he'd taken of General George Patton outside a tent in conversation with General Montgomery, the British equivalent of General Eisenhower; my dad pointed out to me Patton's pair of revolvers, clearly visible in the photos, which he kept holstered on his hips, western style. I know now that this meeting with Montgomery came at a real turning point for the Allies in 1944: Patton's Third Army had trained for combat in North Africa (the Sixth Armored's Tank Corps, to which my dad was assigned in 1942, had trained at the Desert Training Center near Indio, California, before shipping out to England and, ultimately, France in '44). Montgomery informed Patton at this meeting that Patton was to take his men into France instead, which made Patton livid. As an officer my dad was privy to their discussions; the photos he took that day of Patton, he said, immediately followed Patton's meeting with Montgomery.
There were also photos of the vapor trails in the sky after aerial combat over France, looking as if someone had smeared the sky with an eraser. I asked Dad why he hadn't taken photos of the dogfights themselves; he said it was prohibited by Army regulations.
There were other photos of Russian soldiers warily eyeing Dad which he captioned "The Russians did not trust us"; and of Dad and other officers singing hymns in a French tavern while an officer played piano. Photos too of the interior of French taverns that had been decorated with paintings of naked women. Photos of Dad's tank at the Battle of the Bulge, painted white to camouflage it in the snow (Dad said that he never got warm again after the brutal winter there). There were photos of villages and of churches and cathedrals they'd passed as they crossed from France into Germany. Photos of brave soldiers everywhere.
The photo above is one that my dad had taken in France as the 6th moved into Germany; the sign adorned a captured German pillbox. I found it in a drawer at my mother's home in Charleston after her funeral. My sister Alicia--the one who we think must have had different parents and was exchanged for our real sister at birth-- has Dad's photo album, which has a copy of this photo pasted inside; sadly, she refuses to let my other sisters and me have access to it.

3768. As we near Japan we see that HMAS SHROPSHIRE's war was one fought in the company of battleships, cruisers and destroyers, the frontline ships of the 1930s. While there were also escort carriers, rocket ships and PT boats, she appears to have been not much in the company of the new capital ships, the fleet aircraft carriers maneuvring with the new fast battleships out in the wider reaches of the open ocean, striking from an aerial distance.
This is USS COLORADO, another of SHROPSHIRE's great companions, the 32,600 tons lead ship of a new class of super dreadnoughts built by the New York Ship Building Company at Camden, new Jersey, and ciommissioned on August 30, 1923.
She had come to Australia two years later, on the great US Pacific Fleet goodwill visit of 52 ships, including 10 battleships.
Based at Pearl Harbour she was fortunate to be under refit in Puget Sound when the December 6 surprise attack launching the Pacific War occurred.
Generally USS COLORADO seem to escape damage through the South West Pacific campaigns until her luck ran out while supporting troops in the landings on Tinian, where she received 22 topside hits from shore batteries of July 24, 1944. At Leyte on November 27 she was hit by two kamikaze which killed 19 of her men and wounded 72. At the melee of Lingayen Gulf on January 9, 1945, she was hit on her superstructure by friendly fire, killing 18 of her men and wounding 51.
At the end of the war she engaged in repatriations of troops from Pearl Harbour - Operation Magic Carpet- - before being placed in reserve on Jan. 7, 1947. She was sold for scrapping on July 23, 1959.

Broad-tailed Hummingbird and a unique fact
Did I mention how much I love Humming birds? Well I do!! I love their antics, ability to hover, their wonderful colors and oh yes their attitudes!
And this past weekend I had the chance to go to Humming bird lover's heaven at the Arizona Sonora Desert museum hummingbird aviary.
I walked in and right away this little Hummingbird was more then willing to pose and so cute just sitting there on the branch until I lined up just the capture I wanted with the tree branch and light behind. In fact he was so close I could have reached out and touched him!
Something you may not know about humming birds
Hummingbirds use spider webbing as a way to bind and tie their nests together. Without that component the nests are very fragile and will fall apart.

When we first opened the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum's hummingbird aviary, we had no idea whether or not any of the seven species of the birds on exhibit would breed and rear young. Since opening day, however, we've seen Costas, Broad-billed, Black-chinned, Anna's, and Calliope hummingbirds nest, lay eggs, and rear young. There have been a total of 114 nests built, 186 eggs laid, 116 birds hatched, and 102 birds fledged. No other zoological institution can boast of such success!
But this success has not come without a good deal of effort on the part of the exhibit keepers and the hummingbirds - especially when it comes to nest-building. For example, in 1992 we renovated the exhibit, clearing out all the plants and expanding and replanting the new space. Within a month of the renovation, several hummingbirds began to build nests.
The nests were loose and quite fragile, and even experienced nesters were having difficulty. Most of the nests fell apart and we lost several eggs that fell out and broke. We scratched our heads for days trying to figure out the problem before we finally concluded that a primary component of hummingbird nests was missing spider webs!
Hummingbirds use spider webbing as a way to bind and tie their nests together. The spiders had yet to reestablish themselves in the spanking new exhibit. I immediately went out and collected webs from around the grounds, rolling them up on twigs, which I left in the aviary. I also collected 25 labyrinth spiders and introduced them. Within days the spiders were weaving their webs in the aviary and the birds' nests immediately improved.

Phoenix Light Rail Sun Rise!
I captured this shot of a Phoenix Light Rail train as it went by early this morning during sunrise. The yellow and red colors are the rays of the morning sun reflecting off office building windows.
No Photoshop and no post editing other then sharpening and color boost this is right out of the camera. Raw image proccessed in Canon Digital Photo Professional to JPEG.
Its amazing how far in a slow shutter speed panning shot you can push the Canon 100-400 Zoom and still get a sharp photo of the moving train, I found 1/10th of a second to be about the limit.
This shot would not have been possible without the high ISO capability of my Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera and incredible stabilization of my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens.

Day 309 - Celebrations
I took my folks out for Dim Sum today at Century Dynasty followed by taking my Mom to look at some Canada Goose jackets. I think she'll end up choosing the Montebello jacket in a black or a red, but they didn't have her medium size needed.
Afterwards at home, I didn't have too much time before we had to go and meet everyone for Will's belated birthday party over at Cactus Club Cafe. What ensued was a ridiculous 1hr+ wait while we were passed up for tables for no reason and all manner of BS including "manager's reservations where they sat in the booth for 20 minutes, then left with no order", a perfectly good table that sat empty for the whole time we were there, and generally being ignored.
With such a crappy experience under our skin already, I made the call to Mikado West end and they just so happened to have a table for 8 available and I put my name down and told them that we'd be there right away.
As soon as we got there we were immediately seated and provided with hot towels. What ensued was a blur of food, premium hot sake, and all manner of treats! We tried these amazing "Lobster King Rolls" which were their special that were just MASSIVE and at their heart, were huge pieces of crab claw meat. I think everyone was fairly glad that we decided to switch venues. I took out my 5D Mark II and my Gary Fong Lightsphere to start grabbing a couple photos and obviously garnered lots of attention (oops.) again, but this time from our waitress who's got a compact Nikon camera but recognized 5D Mark II and told me how she wanted to do more landscape photography work. I think that Gary Fong Lightsphere makes me more friends that I would have made in the photography club of Edmonton haha.
On top of that, the manager on duty was a friend of my friend Ana! He had recognized me from a party that she had thrown years ago when she still lived in a house with her roommate. He remembered because we were playing Mario Kart together. It was kind of surreal at that moment, it makes me think about all the relationships I've built, and some impressions that I've left on people even in a short period of time, and never think about again.
But, by the end of the night, he saw me get up to leave and rushed over, we shook hands, and I'm certain any time I go to Mikado with my Sweetheart, we're going to go to the West side one now.
But! The night wasn't over. After downing a LOT of premium sake, Will wanted dessert, so dessert would be had! We headed off to Joey Tomato's on Mayfield Road where we were met with a bubbly and fantastic waitress, quick service, more drinks, and now dessert. Banana cream cakes, lava cakes, apple pies, and ice cream were had, although Kevin got the ahi tuna tacos, and this photo was snapped. I would like to point out that while jovial, Will (in the dress shirt) wasn't nearly drunk off his ass, the man is a tank both in physical fitness and as a drinker. Not pictured here are obviously me and my Sweetheart.
I must say, it was really fun, and I'm super glad that my Sweetheart integrates so well with Team Dimsum, especially now that she's found dessert buddies within Team Dimsum with Henry the master chef et al. I can't lie, it's a deal maker for me that she gets along so well with Team Dimsum, and more importantly, they like her, and she finds our whacky brand of humour amusing :)

its been awhile. 3 months? dang. A lot has happened in three months. Let's see...
• first words – baby, no, mama, dada, night night
• first tooth – finally, at nearly 11 months! now he is sporting two very stylish teeth
• first steps – does anyone have any rollerskates they dont use? cause i'll need them when he gets the hang of this walking thing.
• first haircut – at 10 months old. and i didnt want to cut it, i didnt want to let go of the sweet wispy baby hair. now looking back at pictures i cant believe i didnt want to cut it. the child looked homeless. and was rockin a pretty hard core mullet.
What else has happened in 3 months...
• i changed my hair (again). love it. might be my favorite so far.
• i got sucked in under Lady Gaga's spell. Yes. I just heard of her in the last three months. I'm one of those people who never listens to the radio because i'm convinced that everything on it sucks, so i dont get into any popular stuff until like three years late. And Lady Gaga is very uncharacteristic of me. I saw her in concert in July. probably the most fun i've had at a show ever. im a little monster. i cant help it.
• My best friend moved away. :(
• I went back to work full time. Well, i was always full time. i just did it from home two days. Its been bittersweet. I miss the time with Jack, but at the same time, he was getting to be too much to watch and get any work done. I'm adjusting...
• We lost my 24 year old cousin while he was serving in Afghanistan. He is missed terribly. Rest in peace, Sgt. Zack Fisher... ♥
Jack's birthday party invites have been mailed. Party date has been set. I cried addressing the envelopes. Has it been almost a year.. ? How? My baby boy will be one in a couple short weeks. Time flies. I don't take enough pictures of him, and little things that I treasure now will one day slip from my memory and be forgotten. i have GOT to get better about doing that. It breaks my heart. I don't want to forget anything. ever. I tear up thinking of him getting older. Can't i freeze him just as he is now.. ?
i've been doing a lot of photo sessions for clients lately. and while i enjoy it.. photography has become more like a job, and less like the creative expressive outlet it used to be. i miss it. i need to make it a priority to do that again. I might start taking less clients so i can remember what i loved so much about photography in the first place. i dunno. i struggle with it all the time.
Anyway. just wanted to stop in and say hi. sorry for the novel i just wrote. hope you all have been well.

Photo Recipe
Ingredients:
Canon 40D with 50mm F1.8
flash strobe with wireless or remote E-TTL cord
Glass wine bottle
white background
Tripod
Instructions:
Drink wine.
Place empty glass bottle in front of white background, about 12 inches or so. Set focus and put focus on manual. Set exposure to manual. I stopped down to F/8 for a good depth of focus and crisp outline of glass. Shutter need only be the flash sync speed. Compose subject. Hold strobe above subject, aiming it at the white background. Light from the strobe will bounce off the background and through the glass. I had to set the flash exposure for TTL to +3 EV. I used the built in flash wide angle panel to disperse the light over the whole background.
In software adjust levels to make everything crisp.

Teddy Bear's Picnic
4cm miniatures posed on a background printed on 2 sheets of A4 paper. Resulting photo then processed through PhotoSketcher v1.8. You can get some great effects from this free software.

Pink Floyd
Add pink and flow, and it's Pink Floyd's album cover! This was an interesting sunrise, as I've never seen one like this before. A blanket of clouds covered the sky, but at the horizon there was a slit of clearance, and I knew when the sun poked through the clouds would be very dramatic. But what I didn't think about was when the sun poked it's head up above the horizon, that it would light the clouds directly in front of me - good thing my composition was already down! Usually sunrises and sunsets are magical before the sun rises, but in this case the sun came up and the red light hit the transparent clouds rendering them pink from my point of view. It was gorgeous, especially against the dark sky. I purposely stopped down to get a long exposure, so the cloud could stream across the frame and record as much pink as possible. I love the other pink cloud to the left - it balances this photo and composition, and without it I feel like the photo would suffer as the weight would favor the right. The waves were brutal, but looks like mist in the distance. I love the multitude of wooden spikes in the left. They sort of guide the eye inward, but to me they really enhance the mistiness of the waves. And of course the melted snow steaming through the foreground is what initially attracted me to this scene. The flow (I mean Floyd) really guides the eye throughout the pic. And I love how at the end of the flow when it goes into Lake Michigan, it sweeps off to the right, as if it's getting sucked inward. This obviously helps lead the eye, but makes the photo even more dynamic. Thank you Pink Floyd, for such great music and photography!

I'm an addicted collector, tho I try to limit it to small, less expensive objects such as postcards, business cards from restaurants, and Christmas tree ornaments. The ornaments collection began with my parents, who would bring one or two back from their many travels. I love our tree - so many wonderful memories.

Project Conquer My Camera - Day 03 - Photo 015

this was the last photo for that day. this was not my original plan for this shot. the original plan was get the ambiant light that the wall is profiding and just use flash as a fill light. the cause of change of plan was to get the attention of the viewer towards his new hairstyle. i have only one flash at that time so i compenstate with the shutter and aperture to get the effect of the ambiant light plus a small amount of light coming from my popup flash and use my external flash as a rim light. somehow it turned out good i guess.
Project: "CONQUER MY CAMERA"
A challenge for myself if I can control my camera. For the next 30 days, I will post photos directly from my camera. No post processing only watermark. The rules for this project are listed below:
1. No Post Processing or whatever.
2. Only watermark is allowed to be added to each photo.
3. Atleast one photo a day should be uploaded.
4. Title for each photo will be "Project Conquer My Camera - Day No. - Photo No."

placed the flash behind him at minimum power to get a rim effect to show emphasis on his hair. used my popup as a fill light just enough to get the ambiant light as well. the flash from the back showing was intentional to get a mood of the photo.

Absolutely No Joke-Unexplained
I cannot explain this photo, absolutely, positively, no joke. It was taken by my mom in the year "2006", at night, while sitting on her patio in San Benito, TX. taking a picture of inside the house. The white to the left is from the flash hitting the glass, but the white hoop looking thing is a mystery. When my mom showed me this photo for the first time my heart was pumping. I always found this to be interesting. At the same time, I get nervous looking at it.
I only had a copy of the original photo, that was printed on heavy card stock paper. Would love to hear what viewers think?
The original photo may be lost, but my mom had a habit of saving pics and documents to disc.

Photograph of Margaret Leah (Woods) (McDowell) Brennan [1871-1939] on her wedding day 30 May 1892 - wife of (1) Robert James McDowell [1870-1936] & (2) Martin J. Brennan [1900-1926], daughter of Dr. Samuel D. Woods & Alice Coughanour. She was the mother of Flora Jean (McDowell) Wertz, Alice (McDowell) Conn, and Lillian R. McDowell. Original, professional photograph from Porter, Photographer, 815 Pittsburgh St., Connellsville, Pa. Identification provided by Frank Kemer, grandson of Flora Jean (McDowell) Wertz, who owns a similar photograph taken the same day. The Album 1 Series photographs are in a large photograph album which contains many unidentified images believed to be connected to the Coughanour family and including Hamilton, Woods, Yohe, and possibly Jones, relations. An inscription inside the front cover reads, “Presented to Grandpap / By / Bulger & Snider / Dec. 25, 1887.” Several handwritten inscriptions and a handful of funeral cards specifically name the Elliott, Hamilton, Miller, Woods and Yohe families. It is possible that the album may have passed from Hester (Coughanour) Yohe [1858-1938] to the family of her elder sister Alice (Coughanour) Woods [1849-1926] and brother-in-law Dr. Samuel D. Woods [1848-1930], with whom she lived out her last years. The album in combination with the additional contents of the James A. Boyer Collection was recovered from the home of Dr. Samuel D. Woods [1848-1930] and his wife, Alice Coughanour [1849-1926], after more than 75 years of storage. At the time of recovery the home was being sold after 105 years of continuous family ownership. The collection had passed with the ownership of the Woods home in Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, as follows, Dr. Samuel D. Woods [1848-1930] and his wife, Alice Coughanour [1849-1926], to their son Alfred H. Woods [1875-1960] and his wife, Mary Ellen Hill [1879-1954], to their descendants Samuel D. Woods, Mary Frances (Woods) Myers, Virginia (Woods) Boyer [1904-1986], and Alfred William Boyer, until the majority of the collection was recovered by James Alexander Boyer and his wife, Lucinda Bowers, who shared the collection with with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Photo Archives Project in 2006.

Ted met Chloe while he was there and they really hit it off...
Chloe caught my bouquet and I was beginning to think...
just maybe another 'Vegas Wedding' might be on the cards!!! %-)
The photo on the right was taken April this year...
Ted came with me on a trip to visit my relatives in California...
We hadn't seen Bella or Chloe for over three years!!!
Ted got all dressed up in his tuxedo and was VERY excited to see them again!
We had such a lovely time & Bella and Chloe were excited to see us again too. %-)

United Reformed Church and Leeds Liverpool Canal Saltaire Yorkshire
Saltaire United Reformed Church is one of the nation's most precious Victorian architectural gems. The church, built by Sir Titus Salt in 1859 near Bradford, West Yorkshire, is a unique example of Italianate religious architecture. It boasts many architecturally and historically important features and has been described as a classic "Cathedral of Congregationalism".
This Grade 1 Listed Building lies in the valley of the River Aire, at the foot of the Pennine Moors and at the entrance to the Yorkshire Dales. Paid for out of his own pocket by Sir Titus Salt, it is a focal point of the "model" village, Saltaire, that he built for the workers at his huge mill to ensure their spiritual needs were catered for.
Sir Titus commissioned architects Lockwood and Mawson to design the building, as they had designed a number of other important Italianate buildings in Bradford City centre. The entrance is up six steps under a portico supported by six unfluted Corinthian columns and topped by a fretted tower with cupola. Fittingly, the Mausoleum built onto the church contains the remains of Sir Titus Salt himself.
Inside are hollow Corinthian columns with beautiful Scagliola exteriors, an Italian technique implemented by Mr. Dolan of Manchester. Two ornate chandeliers of ormolu and cut glass hang from the ceiling, of such great weight that additional roof trusses had to be inserted to support them. Originally lit by gas, they were made by Hausburg of Liverpool.
March 1 2009 - Planning A Musical Extravaganza

Since it's an "odd" year (2009), it must mean it's time to head to NYC to indulge in many days of Broadway musicals, eating at favorite (and some new) restaurants, and squeezing in some sightseeing or other Manhattan activities. One of my best friends and I started doing this when we both graduated from college and have made this trip every other year since then.
A typical trip will be:
1) Red-eye from the left coast to the right coast on Tuesday night
2) Arrive at JFK early on Wednesday morning and meet up with each other at the airport (since we fly in from two different places)
3) Catch a cab into Manhattan and drop our bags off at our hotel, checking in if at all possible
4) Head out of the hotel to a morning activity so that we don't fall asleep
5) Catch our first matinee, and continue the musical festivities from Wed-Saturday, seeing as many shows each day as possible.
We were planning the trip tonight - the dates, and which shows we want to see. Our trusty source is Playbill.com, so I grabbed a photo of my laptop while we were chatting. Billy Elliot is definitely on my "must-see" list.
