Dangerous No Description Available. Genre: Popular Music Media Format: Compact Disk Rating: Release Date: 16-OCT-2001 Michael Jackson was still going for pop hits with 1991's Dangerous, but he also front-loaded the album with six straight Teddy Riley-assisted cuts. This half-hour swoop of tense, aggressive, often angular funk was Jackson's most interesting music since Thriller, and still sounds, well, invincible on this remastered edition. After that, the record's uneven, but there's nothing embarrassing about it, either. "Gone Too Soon," a non-Jackson composition about teen AIDS casualty Ryan White, is a quiet statement (particularly played next to the choir-laden "Heal the World," "Keep the Faith," and "Will You Be There") showing that the star doesn't always have to get showy. The sprightly "Black or White" is explicitly pro-interracial romance, an angle its video didn't go near, and the urgent "Give In to Me" is almost scary. Scary good, that is. --Rickey Wright (9) Dangerous Cult? I passed a row of tables with a strange machine and a sign offerring free stress tests. However, I saw they also had a pile of L. Ron Hubbard books and a bit of paper that said Dianetics. "Ah, Scientologists!", I thought to myself as I waked past. As I often do with groups like this, I got a bit annoyed that they don't identify themselves properly. I suspect more people stop for a stress test than would stop for a religious (quasi-religious?) group. Hiding your identity to suck people in is dishonest. However, as we passed again on the way home, a small group had gathered with signs saying things like "Dangerous cult" and were talking to people going to and coming from the tables. I thought this was interesting but again was slightly miffed by the way they were hiding their identity behind masks and scarves. If they had something to say about Scientology, and if they believe what they say to be true, why hide? brad is dangerous. Me and Brad circa... 1987? My dad planted that apple tree in our backyard on James Street. I'm pretty sure it never actually grew anything, but that's not the point of this picture. The point of this picture is that Brad is wearing a half shirt that exposes his navel, fun rugbyesque knee socks and gym shorts. As if that isn't bad enough, his shirt says "Dangerous". I'm not entirely sure if it's meant to say that Brad is dangerous, or that the outfit itself is dangerous. bad wheel bearing dangerous Tall, lean and headstrong, FBI agent Kilraven lives by his own rules. And one of those rules includes keeping his hands off Jacobsville's resident sweetheart, Winnie Sinclair, no matter the temptation. Shy and innocent, Winnie couldn't handle a man like him—a merciless man with a haunted past. And this small town may hold not only the woman he fights to resist, but the answers to a cold case that is very personal to Kilraven…. Winnie has had her own share of sorrow, and senses Kilraven's pain. Even though she tries to deny it, the gentle 911 operator feels a connection with the darkly handsome agent. As they combine forces in a dangerous investigation, the stakes rise ever higher. Winnie's life is on the line, and she'll need Kilraven more than ever. But if they are to have a future together, her ruthless Texan will need to confront his past and risk it all for their love. 335/30 ZR 20 Porsche Carrera GT rear wheel As on a racing car, the left-hand wheel nuts have a right-hand thread, while those on the right have a left-hand thread. This simple solution ensures that the thread on each nut runs contrary to the primary direction of travel on all four wheels. As a result, the rotation of each wheel tends to tighten the nut, rather than working it loose. For added security, each of the four nuts has a specially developed retention system. Grip is supplied in the form of high-speed Michelin tires with an extremely generous rolling circumference. Compound and tread are specially designed to ensure shorter braking distances and consistent handling, particularly in wet conditions. The tire dimensions reflect the performance of the car, measuring 265/35 ZR 19 at the front and 335/30 ZR 20 at the rear. Gerry Gerry is a tyre fitter. Shoot-Out: Mike Lupica's Comeback Kids What happens when a star player ends up on the worst team? He either learns to lose or he stops playing the game he loves. These are the choices facing Jake, who has gone from champion to last place, testing his sportsmanship every time his soccer team gets waxed. It is his teammate Kevin who shows Jake that being a good captain means scoring and assisting off the field as much as being the star player on it. The latest in #1 bestseller Mike Lupica’s Comeback Kids novels is a cheer-worthy ode to the one sport played by more kids across the country than any other—in the summer of the next World Cup. Listen Nothing ever happens in the small town of Marlo . . . until the residents begin seeing their private conversations posted online for everyone to read. Then it’s neighbor against neighbor, friend against friend, as paranoia and violence escalate. The police scramble to identify the person responsible for the posts and pull the plug on the Website before it destroys the town. But what responsibility do the people of the town have for the words they say when they think no one is listening? Life and death are in the power of the tongue. The company also produced aero-engines and military vehicles, the latter continuing long after car production ceased. Beginnings The original company, TG John and Co. Ltd., was founded in 1919. Its first products were stationary engines, carburettor bodies and motorscooters. The company's founder T.G. John was approached by Geoffrey de Freville with designs for a 4-cylinder engine with aluminium pistons and pressure lubrication, unusual for the period. Some have suggested that de Freville proposed the name Alvis as a compound of the words "aluminium" and "vis" (meaning "strength" in Latin) although de Freville himself vigorously denied this theory. Perhaps the name was derived from the Norse mythological weaponsmith, Alvi?ss, but the true origin is unknown. The first car model, the 10/30, using de Freville's design was an instant success and set the reputation for quality and performance for which the company became famous. Following complaints from the Avro aviation company whose logo bore similarities to the original winged green triangle, the more familiar inverted red triangle incorporating the word 'Alvis' evolved. In 1921, the company changed its name and became the Alvis Car and Engineering Company Ltd. and moved production to Holyhead Road, Coventry where from 1922 to 1923 they also made the Buckingham car. In 1923 Captain GT Smith-Clarke joined from Daimler as Chief Engineer and Works Manager and was soon joined by WM Dunn as Chief Draughtsman. This partnership lasted for 25 years and was responsible for producing some of the most successful products in the company's history. The original 10/30 side-valve engine was developed progressively becoming by 1923 the famous overhead-valve 12/50, produced until 1932 and one of the most successful vintage sports cars of all time. Exhilarating performance and rugged reliability meant that around 350 of these 12/50 hp cars and 60 of the later (and latterly concurrent) 12/60 hp survive today representing some 10 percent of total production. 1927 saw the introduction of the six-cylinder 14.75 h.p. and this engine became the basis for the long line of luxurious six-cylinder Alvis cars produced up to the outbreak of war. Not only were these cars extremely elegant but they were full of technical innovations. Independent front suspension and the world's first all-synchromesh gearbox came in 1933 followed by servo assisted brakes. A front wheel drive model was introduced (from 1928 to 1930), a model bristling with innovation with front wheel drive, in-board brakes, overhead camshaft and, as an option, a Roots type supercharger. Smith-Clarke designed remarkable models during the 1930s and 1940s — including the handsome, low-slung six-cylinder Speed 20, the Speed 25 (considered by many to be one of the finest cars produced in the 1930s) and the 4.3 Litre model. As with many upmarket engineering companies of the time Alvis did not produce their own coachwork relying instead on the many available Midlands coachbuilders such as Cross and Ellis, Charlesworth and Vanden Plas. Several cars also survive with quite exotic one-off bodywork from other designers. In 1936, the company name was changed to Alvis Ltd and by the beginning of the war, aero-engine and armoured vehicle divisions had been added to the company. World War Two In September 1939 following the outbreak of war car production was suspended, but was later allowed to resume and production of the 12/70, Silver Crest, Speed 25, and 4.3 Litre continued well into 1940. During World War II the car factory was severely damaged in the German Luftwaffe raid on Coventry in 1940 though strangely the armaments factory emerged fairly unscathed. Much valuable gear cutting and other equipment was lost and car production was suspended for the duration of the war only resuming during the latter part of 1946. Despite this, Alvis carried out war production on aero engines (as sub-contractor of Rolls-Royce) and other aeroplane equipment. Post war Car production resumed with a four-cylinder model, the TA14, based on the pre-war 12/70. A solid, reliable and attractive car, the TA14 fitted well the mood of sober austerity in post war Britain, but much of the magic attaching to the powerful and sporting pre-war models had gone and life was not easy for a specialist car manufacturer. Not only had Alvis lost their car factory but many of the prewar coachbuilders had not survived either and those that had were quickly acquired by other manufacturers. In fact, the post war history of Alvis is dominated by the quest for reliable and reasonably priced coachwork. Smith-Clarke himself retired in 1950 and Dunn took over as chief engineer. In 1950 a new chassis and six-cylinder 3 litre engine was announced and this highly successful engin Gillingham Bus Depot, 27 Aug 1940 On August 27th, 1940, during the Battle of Britain, Gillingham suffered one of its worse air raids. German bombers attacked the town at about midnight. The Maidstone & District Bus Depot was bombed, and the Co-op, the main Fire Station, a Newsagent, a Sub Post Office and a Butcher's shop were all hit. An incendiary bomb fell on a Theatre, and apparantly the audience inside, unaware of the raid, were asked politely to leave. Many houses were set on fire, 20 people were killed (including 3 of the M&D staff) and 40 injured. This incident occurred just after midnight on 27th August 1940, when 50 of 120 buses were destroyed. Staff, servicemen, and civilians tried to save the buses but were hampered, not only by the heat, but also because their steering wheels had been locked in accordance with anti-invasion regulations and only two of the staff had keys. The buses that were saved were parked all round local streets and had to be searched for next morning; nevertheless a service of sorts was provided from early morning onwards. A more or less normal service was provided on the 29th, using a motley collection of buses from all over SE England. My grandfather, Bob Lewis, was a bus driver living in Gillingham at this the time of the raid (I'm not sure if he was a M&D driver or not). As he lived quite close (the top end of Toronto Road) he was called in to help with rescuing the busses from the fire. Sadly he died in 1980 and I only recently found out he was there that night. raid steering wheels EXCEED-RC Drift-Star RTR Electric on Road Drift Car The EXCEED RC Electric Drift Star model represents a new generation of 1/10 scale on road drift car. BNE 301B - 1964 Triumph TR4 Sold for ?7,800 Code named 'Zest', the TR4 was introduced in 1961 as a replacement for the TR3A. Though it was based on the chassis and drivetrain of its much-loved predecessor it cut a far more modern dash, thanks to an all new Michelotti-styled body. Power was provided by Triumph's proven OHV four-cylinder engine. The capacity was, however, increased to 2138cc. Other mechanical updates included a wider track front and rear, rack and pinion steering and an all-synchromesh gearbox. The optional overdrive was now made to operate on second and third gears as well as top - the result was effectively a close-ratio box with seven speeds. The 1964 example offered was repatriated from California before being professionally restored, converted to right-hand drive and race prepared at a cost of more than ?30,000. The comprehensive specification includes: lightened body with fibreglass wings, bonnet and boot; Perspex windows; detachable fiberglass hardtop; full rollcage; bucket seats; full harnesses; fire extinguisher; electrical cut-off switches and small-rimmed Mountney steering wheel. The 2289cc engine was overhauled by TR Enterprises of Mansfield in 2007 and has: a racing camshaft; uprated followers; twin Webers; Facet fuel pump; in-line fuel regulator; lightened flywheel and upgraded valve springs. Also: uprated cooling system, oil cooler; Kenlowe fan; lightweight alternator and starter; electronic rev-counter and large bore exhaust. The engine is mated to a race-spec gearbox. The brakes use magnesium drums at the rear, and the TR4 rides on Minilite-style wheels shod with Yokohama tyres (a spare set, is available separately). This attractive Triumph has been garaged in the winter and, though not raced in the five-and-a-half years of present ownership, has completed three track days and the occasional road rally. Said to be perfectly road-usable, it comes complete with extensive pictorial history file detailing the restoration and race preparation. Flywheel (Director's Cut) Jay Austin wants to sell you a used car, but watch out! Many victims have fallen prey to his smiling face and hasty promises. Austin does everything his way until his dishonesty and manipulation are repeatedly exposed. Like many men, he becomes disgusted by the masks he wears and lies he tells. While having a classic convertible repaired, Austin begins a humorous and inspiring journey to win back the hearts of his wife, his son, and his community. In every man's life, there can be a turning point. When Jay Austin makes his turn, he never looks back. Flywheel is the first film from the creators of Facing the Giants and Fireproof. Used car salesman Jay Austin (writer/director Alex Kendrick) swindles his customers and teaches his assistant salesmen to do the same--but despite the profits, something gnaws at him. When he realizes that his own son doesn't respect him, Austin has a conversion and accepts God into his life. This would be the end of most spiritual stories, but Flywheel finds a warm comedy in the obstacles on the path of righteousness; Austin discovers that being right with God means grappling every day with what it means to be honest. Though the filmmaking is raw (the editing is often clumsy and the cinematography is flat), the story is well-paced, has a gently ironic sense of humor, and Kendrick's central performance is compelling. Kendrick is just as persuasive as a man struggling to emerge from a joyless life as he is when he's rediscovered his faith but finds it constantly tested. Though Flywheel is forthright about its Christian inspiration, the story is about actually living a moral life, not about abstract spiritual truths. The result is a movie that looks towards heaven, but has its feet on the earth. --Bret Fetzer (9) Chevrolet 1967 Corvette 7 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L79 327/350 Coupe Chassis No. 194377S106573 Specifications: 350 bhp, RPO L79 327 cu. in. V8 engine, Holley four-barrel carburetor, Muncie four-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with upper and lower A-arms and coil springs, independent rear suspension with half-shafts, lateral struts, radius rods and a single transverse leaf spring, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 98" History: When Larry Shinoda and his Corvette team began their design work on the new-for-1963 Corvette Sting Ray, it is unlikely that they could have possibly foreseen the impact this design would have on the car world. Long considered a modern classic, the Sting Ray’s aggressive lines and sleek profile were perfectly suited to its role as GM’s image leader. Mechanically, a growing list of power train options and Zora Arkus-Duntov’s independent rear suspension, followed by the availability of four-wheel disc brakes in 1965, helped Corvette racers achieve innumerable racing victories. The 1967 model year was a Corvette milestone, marking the end of production for the second-generation models that are also known as the C2 or mid-year cars. Originally, 1966 was supposed to have been the last model year of this body style, but due to production delays on the upcoming Mako Shark-inspired C3 Corvette, Chevrolet continued C2 production for one more year. As a result, the cars were only slightly re-styled, but today they remain coveted as the most refined second-generation Corvettes produced. During the era, many knowledgeable Corvette performance enthusiasts selected the L79 327-cubic inch V8 for power. With its stout 350 hp output, the L79 small-block V8 option provided peak performance approaching that of the vaunted big-block cars, all in a lighter package that maintained the Corvette’s stellar handling and weight distribution. In addition, the L79 was quite easy to maintain, with its hydraulic valvetrain and single Holley four-barrel carburetor. The L79 option added just $105 to the Corvette’s base price. The example presented here is very original, having received just one refinish in its original Ermine White, while retaining its factory-fitted body panels and matching numbers L79 V8 and four-speed drive train. Although its performance is excellent with the optional L79 engine, what really makes this car special is the beautiful white interior. Its white-on-white color combination is very rarely seen today and perfectly complements the Sting Ray’s beautiful lines. An original, well-maintained example, it exudes an irreplaceable authenticity and tightness that simply cannot be duplicated in a restored car. • Final year for the second generation Corvette • Powerful L79 327/350 V8 and four-speed transmission • Just one repaint in the original Ermine White • One of just 1,423 Ermine White cars produced Nissan 370Z Yellow Edition The 370Z Yellow is a limited edition of the 370Z GT Pack coupe for the British market, inspired by the European GT4 race car. Iowa Iowa, the follow-up to the groundbreaking self-titled debut album, turned hard rock and metal on its head with its aggression and brutal sounds. It remains a classic 10 years later and this release celebrates this one of a kind album cycle. Iowa is certified Platinum and Rolling Stone said: "Iowa is not just the first great record of the nu-metal era - it's better than that." The album spawned the singles "Left Behind" and "My Plague" plus Slipknot classics "People=Shit," "The Heretic Anthem" and "Disasterpiece." The 10th Anniversary Special Edition features 2 CDs and 1 DVD. It includes the original Iowa album plus a bonus remix, the audio from the legendary "Disasterpieces" concert filmed in London in 2002. The DVD includes a brand new hour long film by the M. Shawn "Clown" Crahan that documents the chaotic Iowa cycle. Right from the introductory shriek and grind of "(515)," you know Slipknot are deadly serious about making a real heavy metal album. Iowa is intimidating in its unforgiving heaviness. Produced to perfection by wunderkind Ross Robinson, it takes the best of Slayer as a starting point. "People = Shit," "The Heretic Anthem," and "New Abortion" are relentless and wholly brutal, but this is no mere thrash. "Disasterpiece" features a weird, hypnotic riff, while "Left Behind" comes across like a duet between Alice in Chains' Layne Staley and Slayer's Tom Araya. The rerecorded "Gently" builds slowly from industrial atmospherics to a punishing explosion of noise. The title track (also old and formerly known as "Killers Are Quiet") is a deeply unsettling heavy-metal "Midnight Rambler." Frontman Corey Taylor claims to have performed it naked and bleeding from self-inflicted wounds, which isn't hard to believe. This masterfully constructed collection is painfully raw and utterly compelling. --Dominic Wills (16) Thomas Officer. Birth: Dec. 28, 1822 Washington Washington County Pennsylvania, USA Death: Sep. 12, 1900 Council Bluffs Pottawattamie County Iowa, USA Obituiary: Nonpareil, Council Bluffs, IA, Thursday, September 13, 1900, Page 1 DEATH OF A PIONEER THOMAS OFFICER SUCCUMBS AT THE AGE OF 77. IDENTIFIED WITH THE CITY FOR HALF A CENTURY. SUCCESSFUL IN BUSINESS AND GENEROUS WITH FELLOWMEN. Close of a Life of Remarkable Activity Along Many Lines, With Great Effort for Good. Thomas Officer, one of the men whose lives have been woven into the growth of the city and have been made part of the history of Council Bluffs, died yesterday about noon at his home on Willow avenue, after a brief illness, which began on Monday of last week at Leadville, Col., where he had been spending the summer. During the recent months the members of the family, as they have seen him from day to day, were loathe to believe that he was failing in strength, but as they look back now they realize that for several months his vitality has been giving away. He realized that he had not long to live and as he put it "was living on borrowed time," but he was anxious to hold out to the last and die in the harness. Left to Avoid the Heat. Feeling oppressed by the intense heat of early July, Mr. Officer suddenly left for Colorado, where he hoped to feel better. After spending a day or two in Denver, he hurried on to Leadville only to find that he had made the change too suddenly and that he must seek a lower altitude for a time. He immediately returned to Denver, where he found business that called him to Kansas, and on his return to Denver he started again for Leadville by easy stages. This accomplished the desired result, for by the time he had again reached the higher altitude his system had become accustomed to the change and he seemed to get along well. Letters written home told of his enjoyment of the summer and of the improvement in the condition of the health of his son, William P., who was there with him and who was tramping the mountains. Monday night of last week he was taken sick with a bowel trouble, but Tuesday he was better and went down town. That night the illness came on him again and with greater severity. During the night he caught cold and when morning came he was found to be seriously ill and suffering from a nervous chill. He was then taken to St. Luke's hospital until Saturday, when his son started home with him. They missed connections at Denver and Mr. Officer lay all day Sunday in the sleeper on a side track outside of Denver and arrived here on Monday. Mrs. Officer and her son, Charles T. Officer, started from here Saturday to meet the sick man, but owing to the failure of the connections the meeting failed and Mrs. Officer and son spent Sunday in a Kansas town where they met the returning party on Monday. After arriving here, Mr. Officer failed rapidly and it was seen that his death was only a question of a short time. Sketch of His Life. Thomas Officer was born near Little Washington, Washington county, Pennsylvania, December 28, 1822, and was the son of Robert and Margaret Scott Officer. He graduated from Washington-Jefferson college at the age of 17 years with the highest honors of his class, and, being set apart for the ministry, he attended Princeton theological seminary where he was a classmate and companion of many of the great theologians of the Presbyterian church--for instance Dr. William Paxton with whom, throughout their lives, he was a close friend. His eyes failed him after two years of close application to the profession of his choice and he had to seek a vocation where he could use his hands rather than his eyes. He received the appointment of instructor at the Ohio institute for the Deaf and Dumb at Columbus, where he remained several years and until selected by the legislature of Illinois to build and act as president of the Institute for the Deaf and Dumb Jacksonville. He organized that school and laid out the grounds for the building which is now one of the objects of pride in Illinois. Ten years later he came west to enter up some land at Sioux City and Council Bluffs. Came to Council Bluffs. That was the beginning of his acquaintance with this section of the country. In the following year he went back to Illinois for his family and Council Bluffs has since been his home and the center of his interests. He was associated in the removal west with W. H. M. Pusey and the two men established the private bank of Officer & Pusey in 1857. This bank has stood through all of the panics and financial troubles which have since swept over this country and it is said it is the only one of seventeen banks in this city that went safely through the panic of 1857. Together the men have engaged in various enterprises in this vicinity, though in the main they have held to their banking and real estate business. At times they would pick up some business on a mortgage and carry it on until they had secured the m all the way to jackson (or iowa) All the way to Jackson I don't think I'll miss you much All the way to Jackson I don't think I'll miss you much Once I get to Lafayette I'm not gonna mind one bit Once I get to Lafayette I'm not gonna mind one little bit Once I get to Baton Rouge I won't cry a tear for you Once I get to Baton Rouge I won't cry a tear for you All the way to Jackson I don't think I'll miss you much All the way to Jackson I don't think I'll miss you much I was driving home tonight while listening to this song, and it inspired the idea for a diptych. I had recently scanned the image on the right - it was taken while driving down an empty Interstate in Minnesota. (Yes, one hand out the window, one holding the camera and a knee to steady the steering wheel.) I also felt the need to convert this image to duotone... don't ask me why; it just seemed right and fitting. This song, by the way, is my favorite Lucinda Williams song. Surprisingly it has been a good choice to play on my iPod while running, as it has a smooth, steady rhythm and the lyrics evoke that sense of change and movement forward. Thepse lyrics, when merely read, sound as though the singer is bitter and angry and resolute. When heard aloud, however, the words are transformed into something full of yearning, mourning and missing. As though the words are only a brave show, as though the singer is only trying to convince herself that everything will be okay. Cat and Wheel Tavern Castle Green Bristol BS1 The Cat & Wheel Public House on what is now Castle Park a former Georges Brewery owned public house. Now demolished There was a tavern/public house on this site for many years called the Catherine Wheel. The building, which existed at the time of the November 1940 blitz, was built in 1900 and called the Cat & Wheel. This was a Georges Brewery pub and was run by Wally Thorne and his wife (Wally was drafted in by the government to work at Llewellins & James during the Second World War as running a pub was not regarded as essential war work!). The premises survived the blitz, was de-licensed in January 1968 and demolished in October 1969. This was one of the pubs attacked in the 1831 riots by 'gangs of 20 men or so demanding drink'. A countryman was also brought here at the time 'in a state of intoxication'. And expired there a few minutes later. - When he was cut open to determine the cause of death his stomach was found to contain an enormous quantity of port wine. - It was determined that he had died from an apoplexy brought on by overindulgence in this liquor. Grindon at the Cat and Wheel Tavern, Castle Green, on the death of two-year-old Frederick William Fisher of Castle Mill Street. On 5 November, Frederick was slightly feverish from teething and his mother Maria gave him a cooling powder, after which the little boy went straight to sleep. Soon afterwards, Maria noticed that Frederick was twitching. She called her husband to look at the child, but by the time he arrived Frederick was sleeping peacefully again. However, a few minutes later, he began to convulse violently, his tiny hands clenched into lists. Walter Fisher stripped off his son’s clothes and plunged him into warm water, where he continued to lit. A neighbour reassured Maria and Walter, saying that her child had suffered from teething convulsions but had fully recovered. She asked if the Fishers had given the baby any medicine and Maria went to fetch the packet to show her. Only then did she realise that she had accidentally given Frederick rat poison. A doctor was summoned and arrived within minutes. Walter and Maria showed Mr Joseph Mortimer Granville the empty packet of ‘Marsden’s poison for killing rats and vermin’, telling him that Frederick was given the powder approximately two hours earlier and had been fitting for about an hour. Granville again immersed Frederick in warm water and tried to administer an emetic, but the child’s jaws were firmly locked and the doctor was unable to prise them apart to introduce any medicine. Although he called in two colleagues, they were unable to save the little boy The teething powder and rat poison were wrapped in almost identical white paper envelopes but the rat poison, which contained strychnine, also had a blue outer wrapping, which was clearly inscribed ‘Poison’ in large letters. The two powders were stored in a cupboard and the poison had somehow fallen out of its outer wrapping. The inquest jury found that Frederick was accidentally poisoned by strychnine, administered by mistake instead of soothing medicine. They remarked that they thought that it was very careless of Mrs Fisher to administer any medicine to a child without carefully checking it first. 5 Sun Circles Is there any other sort of visual art that requires such a combination of speed, timing and accuracy? And do those constraints change throughout the year, month to month and sometimes minute to minute? This was originally going to be called Seventeen Sun Circles which sounds like a much cooler number than five. But I started too late and the evenings are really drawing in fast and I started to run out of thorns. If I wanted to make seventeen circles then by the time I had finished it would be dark and I would have missed my chance. Of course musicians and dancers have to be accurate, fast and timely. Perhaps painters have to apply their paint in a particular fashion so it does or doesn't dry. A stone sculptor must tap the chisel just right to reveal the shape within the rock, whilst the bronze must be at the right temperature for correct casting. All important technical skills for artists in a myriad of disciplines. But, as I have never followed these disciplines, their subtleties pass my by. The materials I use come from nature and change and grow and decay all the time. Leaves rip, tear, dry out, shed fixing thorns, curl up and go brown. You need to be accurate so that you aren't fixing them over and over as they cannot take the punishment. Wood and sticks dry out and contract, will snap and not be moist enough to be pierced with thorns. Colours fade and everything becomes brittle so you need to be fast too if you want to bring your ideas into fruition. I try to incorporate the elements themselves into what I create, the sun, the moisture in the air, the temperature all play a part and as you become more skilled with the materials, you reveal more and more about how they behave. You notice the subtle nuances in everything: the height of the stream, the angle of the sun, which new plants grow at different points throughout the year. This may sound like I am bemoaning the variability of what I use but that couldn't be further from the truth. Does paint change throughout the year? Will a piece of music die off in autumn and return once again in spring? The more time I spend making land art the more gifts Mother Nature throws up for me to discover. I may have set off to make seventeen circles but I had to adapt. Therein lies the essence of land art. I had to experience and feel the change in the movement of the sun, the drawing in of the evenings and the impending dark time I feel within. Nothing ever stands still, everything is in constant flux and making natural art sculptures from anything I find around me opens a little window into the world of nature and all her wonderful and fascinating nuances. By the way - I am still hibernating. I made this is in September. I'm off back to my cave...
